I've got a file on my PC with some ideas on how to make the Trooper better. Some of them are pretty minor, but here's the list anyway. I know not everybody agrees with all of them - heck, there are some on here that I don't agree with. I put this list together from mostly my own thoughts plus some ideas from others who posted either in the Edmund's Trooper forums or on itog.com (I can't remember which).

Basically, I would like to see a larger, roomier, more powerful Trooper with a 3rd row seat and more of the comfort/convenience features that other SUVs have been offering the past few years.

Observations apply to 1998 and newer Troopers only unless otherwise stated.

    Items to Add:
    * Additional 12V power outlet(s) (Trooper currently has only one)

    * Underhood engine light

    * Lighted trim ring around ignition

    * Third row seats that are easily removable(foldaway as in Odyssey would be ideal but not necessary).

    * Full-time 4WD available with manual transmission - currently, the TOD system is not available with the manual trans

    * Premium sound system option (JBL, Infinity, Bose, Alpine etc.)

    * Rear climate control system – separate controls too.

    Improvements:
    * Make rear seats able to be folded into rear footwell to make the length of flat cargo floor longer for both cargo and people sleeping back there (either instead of or in addition to current method of folding seat down and tipping it forward against the back of the front seats).

    * Gauges are bad - they look outdated

    * Voltmeter and oil pressure would be nice – TOD display takes up their spot on dash (my '96 Trooper had both of these)

    * Gas gauge doesn’t have enough markings and the low fuel light doesn’t come on until it’s almost too late (the low fuel light doesn't bother me; IMO, a low fuel light should be a true warning, not a statement that your tank still has 1/8-1/4 left)

    * TOD display is cheesy and distracting because of the green lights and takes up too much space

    * The center console needs to be redesigned — both the compartment and cup-holders are not big enough and there is a lot of wasted space.

    * Cup-holders for rear passengers are a joke--can't they put a bigger magnet on that thing? I've seen a couple SUVs with rear cupholders integrated into the doors/armrests.

    * More powerful headlights - current headlights are not bright enough.

    * Paint is too thin / not durable enough, especially on the bumpers and overfenders.

    * Better stock shocks

    * Bigger tires – a meatier 16” tire and/or a 17” option would fill out the large wheel wells much more nicely than the current 245/70/16 size.

    * More aftermarket parts available, such as those available in Japan.

    * More adjustments for seats in S and LS models. Lumbar adjustment, height adjustment, seat cushion angle adjustment, etc. These are nice creature comforts for passenger and driver alike.

    * Larger, more powerful engine - improved 3.5L V6 specs and/or V8. Actually, the 270hp 4.2L 6 in the new GM SUVs would we a welcome addition. Also, the Axiom's version of the 3.5L V6 will have 230hp, so it seems likely that the Trooper will have 230 hp in the 2001 or 2002 models.

    * Better-sounding standard sound system - the stock speakers are particularly bad; the head unit seems okay.

    * Independent rear suspension

    * Flip-up liftgate with separately opening glass – for cover when loading/unloading/tailgating

    * Longer, softer front armrests

    * 5-speed automatic transmission - much of the competition is now providing a 5-speed auto instead of a 4-speed. Explorer has had it for several years. A 5-speed auto might be one way to squeeze more highway fuel economy out of the Trooper.

    * More comfortable, wider front bucket seats

    * More powerful climate control system

    * Spare tire mounted under the vehicle

    * 5mph front and rear bumpers

    * Lighted vanity mirrors that work all the time - it took 2 trips to the dealer before they told me my lighted vanity mirrors were working fine, but that they don't come on unless the headlights are on. To me, that's an example of the engineers over-thinking.

Even though this is a fairly long list, I love my '98 Trooper. There are way more things on the list of items that Isuzu should not change than there are on this list of improvements.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
There are a few items I have to disagree with...

TOD Lights are absolutely imperitive. I wouldn't have known my system was out of whack if it didn't show the torque split, cause mine would only do 15% split, even when spinning the rear tires before the dealer fixed it. I wouldn't have known had the indicator lights not been there.

Underside Spare- I feel the rear mounted is far better than underneath... Have you ever tried to get one of those things off the bottom when you get a rear tire blow out? Or if it's really rainy, you get soaked.

Lift Gate- I like the lifting glass, fold down tailgate of my Rodeo, but the 70/30 split doors are far better. A lift gate should stay on mini-vans.

Wider seats? I have a rather large rear end, and even I find the 2000 LS bucket seats to be very comfy, except the arm rest should be longer. My driver seat is 8-way power, wish the pass. was 8 way also.

You read my mind on most of these. I have a 98 S with Tube steps, in-dash changer and a few other odds and ends. I added Polk Audio speakers in self defense - the OEM speakers look like they came out of a 57 Chevy!
There are a couple of areas that could definitely use some help. More power, improved economy come to mind. This can be and is being done by other manufacturers. A 4.5 liter V-8 with around 275hp and 280 lb. ft. of torque with the around the same mileage as the present V-6 would be heaven!
I think the 6.6 Duramax is probably overkill, but a smaller version (5.5l.?) would really be great and still have good power. According to Motor Trend, the Duramax gets about 18 MPG - not bad for a 300 hp torquemonster.
Styling? I really don't mind the "rounded square" look, but I'm sure Isuzu will Go Farther on the next Trooper.
Better speakers of course are imperative and the Nakamichi system from the Anniversary edition would be a plus.

    Since you started:

*I am happy with the rear axle. Front independent and rear axle give the best of both world. The rear is heavy duty and provides the same ground clearance no matter what the load.

*If the tire is to go below, definitely inside. Underneath it gets destroyed, especially if you have an alloy rim. On the back is designed for offroading.

*I like the split rear, what I would add is glass that can be lowered inside the door for long items.

    *A real roof rack available.

    *Better wipers/lights

All things considered, I like the S model the best, simple (with enough amenities) and durable. Even though the truck is sold as an up scale SUV in the US I think it is more of an offroad/work truck in the rest of the world. This is at least what I have gotten from the international reviews I have read.

Local "super" dealer ran ad on 01 S model with 4wd for $ 22998. Took a good ride and look. Ups: Solid, well built, comfortable, good price.
Downs: stodgy looking, gas pig (aren't they all?), acceleration below average, step up too much for my 70ish wife although I guess we could get boards or steps put on, no 2WD in stock but salesmen said he could order, maybe 500-800 cheaper. Rodeo was peppy but almost as expensive. Another local dealer has an '00 left with 2wd, quoted 21 K, I suppose would come off a bit. This S Model but with 6cd changer. I don't need 4wd and don't own any cds. Guess I could buy 6. Dealer had a crappu little brochure on Axiom, tells almost nothing but this truck looks super great (to me). Hope this truck and maybe pricing will be available by time of KC Auto show. Cheers!
  • bluedevilsbluedevils Member Posts: 2,554
I'd say the Trooper delivers more value than the Rodeo. Axiom pricing remains to be seen, although they are supposed to be at dealers (available for purchase?) in April. I did see a couple Axioms at the Detroit auto show. Nice looking vehicle, with some interior updates/improvements vs. Trooper.

I did install side steps on my 98 Trooper, and it makes entry/exit a bit easier. My wife needed some assistance since she's pregnant and drives the truck during the week.

Got directed to www.suv.com on this beauty. Review was favorable but sounded like it was written by a "valley girl". Launch was from some California winery. But, lots of pics and I love it, gotta have it. Definitely not an off road vehicle but that's ok by me. I have accumulated a lot of data and specs on this beauty. A bit bigger than Tribute, similar to Pathfinder in all dimensions except more leg room in back seat. Go look (Sorry I don't know how to post link).
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
I went over the http://www.suv.com and checked out the Axiom. It looks better on there than first thought it would. I like the idea of a switch for the 4wd Lo, instead of a leaver (which didn't really do anything other than activate the vaccum lines to put the car in Lo range) My prediction is that we may see the rodeo be delegated to the Rodeo Sport models within a few years.

Well folks, I got to speak with a relatively knowledgeable Isuzu "Product Specialist" yesterday at the Philly Auto Show. Here's the scoop...

VX 2001: Last year for the VX, the dies for the body panels are worn out and so they won't be able to make any more.

2003 Trooper: Isuzu V8 engine, slightly wider, stretched a bit, 3 rows of seats. Will be built in Japan.

Axiom: Dropped down Rodeo platform, shooting for the soccer moms

Rodeo: Aimed at the off-roaders, as opposed to the Axiom

Hombre: Even though Isuzu is designing the new S10/S15 trucks, Isuzu will likely not get a sister vehicle.

Ironman Sponsorship dropped, it was getting too expensive w/o enough payback. So you won't see anymore "ironman" editions.

    -mike
  • bluedevilsbluedevils Member Posts: 2,554
I remember hearing before the Vehicross was released that the dies would be the limiting factor in the number of units that could be produced. Isuzu planned all along to make them as long as the dies held up.

I hope the Trooper info pans out, though I wouldn't consider anything from somebody like an Isuzu auto show rep to be rock solid.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Tis true. Although he wasn't the usual hand models you see at the shows so I might be inclined to believe him. He said the dies are almost dead on the VX and that's why 2001 will be the last year... :(

  • bluedevilsbluedevils Member Posts: 2,554
At least it will always remain a truly LIMITED production vehicle :) Would have been a better package, and more marketable, with a manual tranny, though.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
I think the price is what did in the VX. I liked it but it is totally impractical. @ $30K Isuzu buyers aren't into impractical. If I had $ I'd get a Trooper and a VX :)

I own a 98 Trooper and have been reading the posts throughout the Town Hall. Great work - both of you. I like the list of changes for future Troopers and agree with most (like paisan I like the spare on back and the split rear doors with working window). My only addition and I think bluedevils touched on it would be improvement in the air conditioning. Maybe rear air but also more powerful air flow in the front. I live in SoCal and the summers get HOT! The more I drive this thing the better I like it - put BFG TA KOs 265/75/16 and i love em. Gotta wait til 2003 for a V8? Well I guess I just keep on Troopin til then. BTW - i would imagine that bluedevils is getting excited that March is just around the corner!
  • raydahsraydahs Member Posts: 449
    Hey nighter50,

I'm looking to put BFG TA KOs on my rig soon.
I just put new rims on mine (16x8) the offset
brings the wheels flush with the fender flares.
I know I could get the 245's on, in your opinion
do think I could do the 265's without flare mod's.

Also how much air pressure do you run? I beleive these things are rated at 65 psi max.

Oh, I live in So.Cal also, try getting the windows tinted DARK! it helped alot.

    Thanks
  • nighter50nighter50 Member Posts: 127
I haven't had any trouble with the 265s and the stock rims and fenders. I just looked and I don't think that you will have a problem even with the wheels a little farther out. I have a good 4+ inches clearance from the top of the fender and 3 inches front and back. I think I am running about 35-40 psi. I look and the max psi is 65psi as you said. I think you will like the look of them - makes the Trooper look like a "trooper" and they have worked well in the snow (spend alot of time in Mammoth).
  • nighter50nighter50 Member Posts: 127
There is enough leg room for me in the driver's seat of my Trooper (I am a little over 6 foot and 200lbs) but the glove box interfers with legroom in the front passenger seat. I rarely ride there - only on long trips when my girlfried takes over the drive or when i am drunk:> but I find it annoying that my knees hit the glove box. No complaints about the back seat however as it has as much or more leg room than many "bigger" vehicles.
  • raydahsraydahs Member Posts: 449
    Thanks nighter50,

I'm sure the guys at Discount Tires will mount one, just to be sure. I never considered the 265's until you posted....Thanks again.

I hope my family (me, wife, chocolate lab, and baby on the way) is ready for another Trooper by the 2003 model year. Our 1998 will have 80-100k miles by then and will probably become our second vehicle when we add a new V8 Trooper to the stable.

Yes, raydahs, I'm looking forward to March Madness. Duke basketball is one of my other great loves. I am a huge Duke fan but didn't go to school there. Wish I had, but I never even applied. Didn't have the b***s to attend an out-of-state school (I'm in Michigan). I saw the entire Duke/North Carolina game last week. Very disappointing home loss for Duke, but Carolina deserved the win. But I digress...
  • nighter50nighter50 Member Posts: 127
Actually, I was the one that mentioned March Madness. Duke looks good - saw part of Clemson game and Tigers gave 'em a little run right after the half. Of course blue devils put them away at the end. I went to USC so I tend to follow them - they are too bad this year - we will see.

I was originally planing on getting rid of the Trooper at the end of the year and getting a Tahoe or Sequoia but reading all the posts about reliability (i have had no problems and am at 50K) I am thinking of just keeping the Trooper. I have had a couple of mechanics comment on the nice work Isuzu has done on the Trooper. It fits my needs pretty well. Good luck with the baby! I pull for Duke - SC in the finals - like that will happen!
  • nighter50nighter50 Member Posts: 127
No worries - I hope the tires are as good for you as they have been for me. They really make the Trooper look tougher.

    Bluedevils
my post should have read that USC is NOT that bad this year!
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Hazarding a wild guess on the some questions posed in a different area of the owner's club:

TOD + V8: Definitely see the TOD on here, possibly Traction Control system as well. The new one is basically going to be a wider stretched version of the current model with a bigger power plant, so I don't see much change.

Storage: I'd say that knowing how Isuzu works, they will likely have as much room behind the 3rd row as is currently behind the 2nd row in the Trooper.

Overall I'd look for this vehicle to be along the lines of the Sequoia or Landcruiser, but without all the doo-dads that those have, and a much cheaper price tag.

Let's hope that some Isuzu engineer is researching the net and comes across this forum...

    -mike
  • gpm5gpm5 Member Posts: 785
Well if there were a V8 with 4WD TOD plus space behind a 3rd seat for some luggage, I think they could be on real competition with Sequoia and Suburban/Yukon XL not to mention the FORDs. I hope they keep the cargo doors AND the outside spare. The Sequoia really is not very big--I pulled beside one in a sales lot. The 3rd row seats are smack up against the tail gate.

Also, they should put a door handle on the inside of the cargo doors so someone could get out that way if necessary.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Add the following to the rear doors:

    1) Glas that retracts into the 70% door so you could stick long items out window.
    2) Defroster wire in the 30% glass
    3) Inside release handle on the 70% side

Add to the rear cargo area:
    1) lights built into the walls of the cargo area to illuminate in addition to the overhead one.
    2) Power outlet(s)
    3) Better Jack (this is a problem on all SUVs)

  • gpm5gpm5 Member Posts: 785
Has anyone seen any web sites or literature from Isuzu or inside info 2nd hand from Isuzu that dicusses their plans for the new trooper. There must be a 2003/2004 trooper on the drawing board now, since I assume they must think far in advance on such SUV design.
  • gpm5gpm5 Member Posts: 785
  • sdc2sdc2 Member Posts: 780
I think they should add a hold-open release to the handle on the inside of the large door. By that I envision a trigger-type thing in the handle, similar to the gas door release - it could also be cable operated. It would allow one-handed operation to disengage the hold-open strut when shutting the door.

I get tired of having to set everything down to push on the door and reach down to release the catch.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Good point. I usually try to leave it almost open all the way, so that I can just slam it one handed :)

    -mike
  • gpm5gpm5 Member Posts: 785
I do the part open thing and try to push and unlatch it one handed as well. I think that's why when I bought it the bracket was removed. But it is good for safety, especially in wind or on an incline.

I watched the video clip of the Axiom's launch at the auto show and heard about this great web marketing campaign that Isuzu was going to have. Well, here we are a month away from Axiom's rolling on to the lots and all I have seen is a small Flash file that was sent to me today with no new information (or splash for that matter) than what's on the web site. And since the web site has not been updated in a couple of months, that's not saying much.

There is more information on the Isuzu dealer's site - including a link to the article on SUV.com.

What's going on? Is the car really going to be available in March? Has any dealer test driven it yet? I see all sorts of information on cars that won't be available until fall on different sites, but nothing on the Axiom. It certainly seems as though Isuzu has been unable to create any buzz around this new model.

    Any thoughts?
  • baddestbob1baddestbob1 Member Posts: 96
Hilltop, I'm with you on this mystery. There are some bare bones specs and it appeard that there will be 2 trim levels, both in 2 or 4 WD. No pictures showing a roof rack although one reviewer mentioned one. My "super dealer" salesman said they are going to Dallas for look and drive in March and they are expecting deliverys to start in April. Axiom is same wheelbase as Highlander but 2" shorter, 1" higher and has more cargo space at 85.4cft, Trooper is 90cft.
I offered to buy one, sight unseen, for the right kind of deal. He came back with 6% over as a figure. I would estimate this would be about $1400-$1500. Hope to do better, maybe a little later than sooner.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Have been very very tight lipped on their new releases for the US for some reason. I'm not sure why, but I guess they don't want people to start the rumor mill going and then let people down. I'm sure the facts and figures will be forthcoming soon.

    -mike
  • bluedevilsbluedevils Member Posts: 2,554
is pretty crappy, at least in terms of generating buzz and providing concrete information about the upcoming vehicle. Most manufacturers don't have their sh*t together when it comes to generating interest in an upcoming vehicle. That's just my opinion. When you consider that Isuzu is a much smaller player in the U.S. market, it's easy to see why they don't make much of an impact with their advertising dollars because there aren't as many dollars available.

I'd prefer that Isuzu put its money into the vehicles, not the advertising. I'll find out about the available vehicles on my own. Isuzu doesn't need to hit me over the head with any gee-whiz marketing crapola. Now if they decided to do that, I would have no problems with it. But it doesn't disappoint me if they don't do it.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Anyone think they'll have a series of Joe Isuzu ads? I'm thinking that the current one with him in bed is the 1st of a series. I'm not impressed by it, but I am hoping it's part of a bigger scheme. I think the next one will have him brought back as a salesman to sell the new Axiom!

Has anyone noticed Toyota is using their ad guy from the 80s also currently in their ads where TV guy goes to heaven?

    -mike
  • hilltop33hilltop33 Member Posts: 15
Putting info on a fancy web site and continually updating is about as cheap as you are going to get in advertising and marketing. Making Flash presentations to send out in e-mail with lots of information in them is the cheapest, fattest and easiest way you can get to disseminate information.

There really is 0 reason as to the poor marketing plan that is following this car this close to the launch date. The Matrix and Vibe have as much information out on their web sites and they don't come out to Spring 2002.

I am not that familiar with Isuzu, but the Toyota Highlander had reviews out about it a couple of months before it was released. So far, I have read 2 reviews on the Axiom and neither one of them has been posted to the Axiom web site. Perhaps Isuzu has a plan, but they are missing the boat. A lot of people looking at the Highlander now might be persuaded to hold out for the Axiom in 6 weeks, if they knew anything about it or even that it was going to exist. Too bad for Isuzu. If the information were out there now, it could be a real competitor with the Highlander.

Just a note, but the Isuzu dealer web site says that the Axiom is going to be available in March. Also, I think I would avoid the Joe Isuzu approach and come up with something new to get to the target market.

    Just my 2 cents.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Isuzu is a niche player. They can't out-gun Toyota, they just don't have the manpower. It's kinda like a battle where your opponent has a nearly infinite # of fighters. You can't just run out and fight him on a big open battlefield. You need to pick your battles wisely. In advertising, if you can't out power your oponents, you need to stratigically and efficiently effect them. Once the Axiom is out on the streets and selling for much less than the Highlander, people will buy it. Since it easily out performs a highlander in all ways execpt gas milage.

    -mike
  • hilltop33hilltop33 Member Posts: 15
I was just in the bookstore and looked in the March editions of 4x4 Magazine and Automobile Magazine. Both have reviews of the Axiom. They are not bad, nothing fantastical, but definitely not bad.

Just thought I would let people know.
  • baddestbob1baddestbob1 Member Posts: 96
Basic web site has no new info but if you go to the comparison table they reveal a lot of the features. Note, you have to compare the Axiom against all the other vehicles (Highlander, Subaru, Jeep and Ford Explorer to see everything but both AS and (plain vanilla?) model have lots of standard features, i.e. cargo area cover, alloy wheels (17" tires), key less entry, multi function remote, power drivers seat, heated ex. mirrors, skid plate. LSD, self locking hubs, auto climate control and rear HVAC, rear power outlet, adaptive variable suspension, cd changer (6 pack?),delayed courtesy light.
XS model includes Leather and roof, heated front seats, all of these options on Van. model.
XS also includes compass, temp, trip comp screen (I guess) apparantley n/a on Vanilla.
Option on both is exteriot rack and cargo net, passenger power seat.
It was my understanding that this vehicle was going to offer TOD but comparison schedule shows driveline for XS as Selectable AWD, for Van. partime AWD (not 4WD). Will someone please clarify the difference?
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Axiom has TOD in it, same as the Trooper.
The only difference is that it has pushbutton Low-Range instead of a leaver (you still need to put it in neutral to engage 4wd-lo)

They may have worded it differently on their comparisons to other vehicles but they are the same. The computer screen IIRC is just an LED type display.

I don't recall a rear HVAC unit, but I could be wrong on that.

saw axiom at Chicago auto show, and sat in it. Nice, but the truck was charcoal metallic with camel-yellow (!) combined with dark gray seats, yellow doors, sides and ceiling upholstery. Looked good outside, but inside color combination made my eyes hurt. Other than that the layout was nice. Seemed not as tall as Trooper inside the cargo area. No roof rack, but the guy said it will be available. If I am not mistaken, the 2HI - 4Lo - 4hi is a switch not a lever as in current Trooper. I think I also saw navigation screen on the dash (not sure). Overall, good first impression, except the horrible interior color.
  • baddestbob1baddestbob1 Member Posts: 96
There is a new review on Tirekicking Today web site. Pretty favorable but mentions real bouncy ride on rough surface. Also crowded back seats. No hard info. New "Joe" ad during KU game (go Hawks!). Oh yeah, review states that Ax is set to compete with MDX and RX according to Isuzu spokesperson.
Viktoria, I believe "Nav" center is actually driver info center, i.e. outside temp, compass, trip computer, mpg etc.
Anyone with new info or sites please post. Thanks
  • sbcookesbcooke Member Posts: 2,297
They are making the Axiom, (Rodeo w/Trooper drive train) in the same plant in Indiana as the Rodeo. I hope it doesn't have the same problems. I think what makes the Trooper and Land Cruiser (its counterpart Sequoia made in US) unique is that they are both made in Japan for world wide production, not just a single market. Not to knock US production, but from what I have read the Rodeo has a lot of build issues, and the focus is a lot smaller.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
98 had problems but it was the first year of a new body style (rear coils, DOHC, etc. etc.) I had a '97 that came from IN and know of no one with problems with the 95-97 models. Mine when 120K miles w/o visiting the dealer. :)

But I'll agree about the Trooper and LC being world vehicles and therefore need to be more reliable than US specific vehicles. When you are 200miles from another human being in sub-saharan africa, it's hard to say "AAA will come and tow your truck in...."

Saw a vehicle at KC auto show, really pretty nice. Agency salesmen had no info on pricing, mentioned April delivery and "priced from mid 20s up to (get this) price to compete with MDX"!!! No way. I thought it compared very closely with Toy Highlander. Got a brochure from Isuzu touting 00% financing which included a "special" 800 number which I called. The guy asked "Where did you get this number?" I of course replied "my name is Bond, James Bond." Anyway the guy said he did have a brochure just on the Axiom which he is sending. 1 800 795 9779. Note, 00 finance NOT on Axiom.
My wife wnt to the car show and seemed to really like the Trooper (also MDX, Envoy and Highlander).

SUV.com has listed following: Standard 2x2 $25985; 4x4 $28305. XS model with leather, roof, etc. 2x2 $28465, 4x4 $30785. This vehicle is very nicely equipped and looks good (if you can go along with front end design). I think I prefer it w/o roof rack (optional) Similar equipment on Toy HL runs quite a bit more.

They are gonna be price leaders once again. A True SUV for around $27K actual selling price should be real nice. I'm suprised the loaded XS is coming in at the $31K range!

If those numbers are correct, I'm surprised too. Sounds like pretty good value. On the other hand, it doesn't sound like there will be as much room for deep Trooper-sized discounts off MSRP. I hope people don't walk in expecting to get this brand-new model for dealer invoice or even less, just because they've heard of similar things with Troopers.

I'm assuming the Axiom will sell fairly well.

Full info posted today on BB. Questions: VP2 intro package on standard model seems quite pri

cey for what you get. Assume some of this stuff would be available as after market. Trailer hitch is not shown as available option separately. Also step up to XS is $2158 invoice on 2WD. You get leather, sunroof, fog lights and molding. Isn't this a bit much?
Comments on4.30 axle ratio with230hp engine? Lots of standard equipment included that is extra cost on Highlander etc., but no side air bags available. Since I have no need of off road capability and don't need to drive much in really bad weather (1,500,000 miles no stuck, no bang) the 2WD, no roof, (don't care about leather) looks like my cuppa. Otherwise over to Toyland or maybe Explore. Appreciate your frank and knowedgeable comments. Thanks.

For Moonroof and leather. That is about the difference between the LS and Ltd versions of the Trooper. Who needs side air-bags? :)
