I think you'll like the way it looks. It looks kind of dull on the Celica, but looks very aggressive and sporty on the GT since it seems more prominent. I'm not disappointed and from what I've seen of the Hyundai spoilers they make for the GT, they are just not worth it since they are so boring. Just take a look at the pictures of mine and Wayne's and by that you should be able to figure out if you'd like it on your car or not.
Jeff
bought my Gt from hustedt... $14,500 orso for 2001.5 Cobalt (ahh discont after .5 yr= rare color)auto, mudgaurds, mats.
as I posted a while ago:--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"
#1240 of 1954 LI dealership prices on GT GLS by th003g Jan 03, 2002 (08:42 pm)
Just got back from dealer to replace/ augment accent (105k) with elantra, rock bottom price for GLS package 2/floormats/mudgards/fogs/ w/ Auto tranny: 12,900
Lowest price for GT with moonroof/ Trac+abs/mats/gaurds/auto $14642.00
no need for cd or alloys because im switching those from my GT"
took the GLS.
Huntington: dunno exact price but my cousin bought a Santa fe LX front wheel drive for 250 over invoice.
Service department at hustedt is almost nonexistent, as you may know they are a chevy dealership first off so they could care less about my hyundai, their hyundai showroom is also a sorry excuse for an office.
Neil: they want you to finance, no matter what, but you can get the best deal and prepay (most of the time) I dunno if you can get the prices I got quoted since the sales girl who got me my deal now works for smithtown Toyota... service department is nice and clean.
Huntington... nice people, my cuz go the deal directly fom the sales manager since there was nobody in the showroom to help him at the time and the manager recognized my father who had been there many times before.
Atlantic, nice selection, nice people, not really good when I came to prices.
Of course they all need a class or two with me to learn more about the cars they sell... most of the salespeople tried to tell me stuff like; 2.0l 4 cyl 145hp, cruise is optional, and had to revert to the brochure or the window sticker whenever I asked a question, many times I'd be telling my dad about the car myself... they should've given me a cut of teh comission
Good luck to all!!

I now have 3600 miles on my GT and still love it. Brought it in for its first service yesterday (simple oil change) and was shocked to get a bill for $37...I dont think I have ever paid more than $25 for an oil change.
Does $37 seem extreme or is there something about an Elantra GT that makes oil changes pricey?
Thanks
Dave
PS Best wishes Jofficer
If one were to do it themselves, the cost would be around $10. So allowing for twice as much from the dealer, the cost should not be more than $20+tax. That is the most I would pay.
There is nothing at all special about changing the oil in the GT. It should be a 5 minute job for a shop with a hoist. It will take the DIYer longer since a hoist is not normally available.
Now if they also [actually] do a complete "x" point inspection, and that is what you have been charged for, then maybe the cost is not too bad. But for just a straight oil change, it is too high.
You may want to check out http://www.overtons.com. They have an oil extractor (make sure you put that in when you search..."oil extractor") for $59.99 + tax. I bought one of these to do oil changes for myself & my wife. It is excellent! You don't have to get under the car to use it, either. You simply put it's tube directly in the dipstick, and it safely pumps your oil out. Then add your new oil and -- voila! -- you're set in less than 10 min.
It sure beats paying $20-$30 per oil change (especially if you have looooooooooong commutes piling on the mileage like we do).
Edmunds lists the dealer wholesale cost on a 2001 GT at $7,500, and the dealer retail that people in my area are actually paying at $9,900. This assumes average mileage. The NADA yellowbook indicates dealers asking prices are around $13,900. The dealers in Milwaukee, WI have the NADA price down really good. The problem: the dealerships won't budge on the price. The lowest I found was one for $12,995 and that had 20k on it! When I show them my data and spread sheets they insult me and tell me that I am out of my mind. One dealership told me they paid $12,800 for the vehicle. Another said they had over $11,000 into the car. And two other dealerships put stickers on the car of $16,999 and $18,999 and then put the cars on "sale". Get real? So my question: who are these people paying $9,900? Am I out of my mind to expect to pay between $10,000 and $11,000 for these usded 2001's? ( I offered one $11,200). And why the obstinant position on these vehicles? They all are willing to rely on dealer holdbacks and factory to dealer incentives on the new 2002's and cut me a "deal" of $600 below invoice. What gives? Advice anyone? Can I get this car (2001) in the range I want, and if so HOW? Help!
I perused this board for months before I finally
got around to buying my car, a 2001.5 5-sp GT w/ moonroof and floor mats. Although I live in Jackson, MS, I was willing to fly to St. Louis to get a 2002 at invoice from a dealer over there. In the meantime, I was half-heartedly haggling over the 2001.5 that I eventually bought. I didn't really want it, but I thought, "Let's see how low we can go."
Long story short, I ended up with the car for $12,550. Total mileage when I bought it - 200 (about 50 of that was miles I put on while testing the car out). So, I still got the full warranty and the car had virtually no miles on it.
Of interest (perhaps) is the fact that I walked in there with the numbers from Edmunds.com in my head for a used 2001 GT. I added the delivery cost and about a hundred bucks and gave them my price (12,200). They acted really weird about it - asking how I got that number, telling me it was way off, etc. Along comes the manager two minutes later who is all smiles and tells me that he has added Edmunds.com to his bookmarks on the main computer and that I had come up with a VERY interesting price, but clearly it was way off from the approx. 13.5-14 every other book/site showed. He and everyone else looked so funny, though (almost guilty!), that I think I was within $100 of the actual price of the vehicle. I didn't mind paying 12,550 after that. I still think I got a steal...
Bad news is, the car has been in the shop for a week getting a new hood and grill after a car in front of me hit a log in the road that went flying into my car. Good thing I only have a $250 deductible.
I know we have a bright red 2k1.5 auto GT here, sans moonroof, if you want to make the trek. : )
You know, the manager gave me his card and asked me if I wanted a job after we had finally inked the deal. I laughed at him and said no, but maybe I should reconsider... ; )
About insurance, I got a quote from my provider (USAA) @1800 a year. I'm 20 with a totally clean record (no tickets or accidents), a defensive driving course credit, and good student discount. It's a little high, but nowhere near as high as some of my friends driving civic coupes.
If you can, give me the name and number of the dealer who might have another 2001 GT. In Milwaukee I can't get them to budge from their lowest quote of $13,200 on a 2001 GT with 12,000 miles on it. I offered them a flat $12,000 which I thought liberal and they laughed in my face.
Thanks,Tim
I've been able to climb all over one and personally I don't like it
The main reason I wanted to go with Geico was not their rates though... A few years ago I was hit by someone with Geico insurance. Their claims department was awesome. I just called them up and told them that someone who was insured by them ran me off the road. They had someone deliver a rental car to me with the half hour! Now that's service...
The different spec levels hyundai uses has me intrigued, even GLS vehicles are different between the markets, this must add to costs

The mini-minivan you were talking about was called the Mitsubishi Expo/ Expo LRV and Eagle summit wagon and maybe even colt wagon if dodge had a version, I dont rememeber. Came out in 1992 only Mitsu carried the version with 3 row seating . mitsu could also be had with AWD, was in no way a luxo minivan like the caravan or the T&C is but a basic form of family transport. the most luxurious things it had were power windows and door locks. Powered by a small engine that put out less than 145 hp. recently discontinued in japan ( know this because in 92 my father chose between the expo LWB version and the diamante LS ( both new at the time)
Hell... just go to the hyundai korean website... they sell it as the Santamo jsut like they sell the first generation montero 4 door as the galloper... LOL
Great to see all these peeps with the new hatchback! Anyway, I live in the DC/VA area and just bought a brand new, sleek, black 2002 GT this past Saturday and had some questions.
1. The MSRP on my model (fully-loaded, which includes the moonroof, anti-lock brakes/traction control, 4-speed auto tranny options) was about $17,800. I walked out the door with the car for $15,000 flat. That price also included an upgrade in my warranty to a FULL 10-year bumper-to-bumper (instead of the standard 5-year b-t-b/10-year power train), taxes, tags/registration, and that special SIMONIZ teflon coating (which supposedly means you don't have to ever wax your car). Was this a good deal? My friend and I definitely thought so, but after seeing some the prices thrown around on this board, I'm not so sure anymore.
2. People have been talking about that "shift flare" problem in the auto tranny -- you know, that pause between the 2nd and 3rd gear. Honestly, I don't know jack about cars, so I haven't really noticed it all that much. Then again, I've only had the car a few days and only have like 40 miles on it. Should I call the dealer and ask that the ECM be re-programmed? By the way, what does TSB stand for?
3. Exactly what is that SIMONIZ coating? What exactly does it do? Should I get my car washed before setting up my appointment (gonna get one this week at the dealer)? Is it a one-and-done type of deal, or do I need to get it coated multiple times?
4. Can you tell I don't know JACK about cars yet? LOL.
Awrighty, thanks for the help in advance...
Ray
TSB stands for Technical Service Bulletin. If it was me, I'd drive the car a while and see if the shift flare rears it's ugly head before contacting the dealer about it.
Congrats and good luck with your new GT. Keep reading these boards, and before too long, you WILL know jack about cars!
I picked up my GT last night. It was an ordeal trying to find a package 11 model. I had originally wanted a Carbon Blue or Black, but the dealers could not locate the color/package combo.
So...I now have my Rally Red (which, I must admit, is very sporty looking!). Only had the car for a day, but I cannot help but think this is the BEST deal on ANY model car out there...PERIOD!
The options are unbelievable. Leather, ABS, Traction Control, Moonroof, Power EVERYTHING, Michelin Tires, Alloy Wheels, and Cargo Space Galore. Anyone looking for a great car at a fair price should do the research on this car -- it simply cannot be beat by anything out there for the options/price.
I even feel "nitpicky" for asking this question...but has anyone added any interior lighting to the back cargo area. If so, what are your recommendations?
The car is a dream, so this is miniscule to say the very least. I just can't get over how great the build quality and feel is. When reviewers say it feels like you're driving a $30K car, I know what they mean. Hope everyone else is having as much fun as I am. If this thing holds up, and takes the mileage we're going to put on it I can see us getting another for my wife very soon
It helps.
Not that I am biased or anything...
seminole_kev & rallyred: Thanks for the congratulatory messages! I can't get enough of this car. It's wonderful. I'll keep reporting back as we put the miles on, but I already know it's going to be a real winner.
I love that it's not like ever Tom, Dick, and Camry out on the road. )
Saw the pics of your spoiler & antenna and dang -- the car looks sweeeeeet. I'm thinking about doing the same thing, and it's an added plus that your GT is the same model/color as mine so that I can get a first-hand perspective. I was curious, though...did you give spoilerdepot a paint code at all when you ordered the Celica spoiler or did you just tell them to paint it a generic black?
Also, to jrs333 -- congratz on the new ride! I totally feel you on that "I love that it's not like ever Tom, Dick, and Camry out on the road," comment. I am so tired of seeing the same old Accords, Corollas, and Civics out there. Now we both have something unique out there to be proud of!

I am going to get my new GT next week. Yay!!!
I do have a question regarding the button for the rear wiper. The button seems very flimsy and poorly designed. Has anyone had a problem with the button on the long run?
Another quick question! Do you have to go the the dealer you bought the car from for repairs and maintenance?
thanks
indy
You can take your GT to any dealer you want to. Due to availability issues, I bought mine at a dealer 45 miles away, but I take it to the local dealer for service. They're more than happy to take my money!
But eventually I worked the 'long wait' to my advantage. I had a dealer who was working extra hard to find me a good deal on a manual. As he just about reached his 'giving up' point, I told him that if he could give me the black automatic pkg 11 he had on his lot for 15k, then he could give up his search for a manual and we'd all be happy. After TTL, I paid just under 16k for it before trade-in.
Honestly, I really wanted the manual for fun and I didn't really need it. And I have no regrets about going with the automatic, especially with getting such a good deal on it.
If there is a warranty issue, you might have a little less hassle if you have done all service at a Hyundai dealer. But having service done elsewhere doesn't void the warranty.
I can't see how adding a different antenna could void a warranty, since that is an external part. You might call Hyundai's customer service line and ask them--better yet, get something in writing from them.
Thanks for the compliments. Glad I could help you reach a decision on what you wanted to do.
Jeff
I do my own oil changes and keep a log book containing the date, mileage, the receipt for the oil and the side of the oil filter box showing it was a Hyundai filter (they cant argue). Hyundai filters on line for 3.99 each at :
Changing the antenna will not void the warranty. I received the Elantra GT Euro antenna last night and this morning was the trile run. I had no problem getting my favorite stations in NYC and I am on Long Island about 40 miles away (FM). I listen to very little AM (bridge and traffic info). Dont forget to transfer the little rubber O-ring from the OEM to the new antenna. It looks really neat on the car!
egocentric
I too had trouble getting a manual in Colbalt Blue. My dealer (Huntington Hyundai) had to import one from Long Island City. This added about 40 miles to the odometer. They tried to push the silver manual they had in the showroom but I stuck to my guns. The manual in the showroom also had a inoperative fuel gage and they tried to tell me "its low on fuel, dont go too far". When I left for the test drive it read empty. When I returned it read 1/4 tank.
PS: The draw back to living one block from the Hyundai dealer is... I see GT's everywhere
June C&D rated 5 door hatches--Aerio, Vibe, Focus, Matrix, Pro5 if I remember coorectly (in that order Pro5 best). No GT. Howcome? I don't think C&D has ever reviewed the Elantra GT and only gave the GLS a short look.
Go to Ebay and search Elantra GT. The only item that will come up is the Euro Antenna.
csandste
Car and Dribble is behind the 8 ball. Autoweek has had Hyundai articles so much now I'm starting to wonder if they are being paid by the company. I wouldnt want to be in that Pro5 on a long highway trip. Can you say badump-badump-badump-badump.
1) Illuminated glovebox. My roommate's '99 Gallant is pitch black when you open it up at night.
2) All power window switches are illuminated, front and back. My $30,000 Subaru SVX didn't even have that.
3) Grab handle on all 4 doors (those things on the ceiling that you grab onto when a person is driving crazy). There's even one for the hatch! Again, my roomate's '99 Gallant has none.
4) Two tiered center console. I wouldn't buy a car without a center armrest, and I really like this one with it's two tier design.
5) Lights have automatic shutoff so you won't drain your battery if you leave your lights on accidentally
Anything else anyone else can think of? I have a few pet peeves, but this message is all about praising the GT and I think Hyundai really did a good job in designing this car.
