I took mikeyjohn's post #12339 above (I hope he has a sense of humor!)and applied this program:

"I strongly object t'yo' descripshun uh old grey fro gentlemen drivin' M's. ah' use Grecian Fo'mula, so's dere! Preach it loud, bruddah!! Right on! The program converts a web site or text to one of several dialects (this one is jive).

Try it on the Daimler Chrysler web site!

Where are you staying in Vegas? Doing anything other than feeding your money to the bandits? I've spent WAY too much time there both on a business and social standpoint. :)

    Heh heh,

Interesting how 3 different people see the taupe interior of a std M 3 different ways. We all saw a somewhat different color. I wonder if the cars paint color has something to do with it?

You looking for a midsize or full sized SUV? I drove the Nissan Xterra as a rental and I really liked it. Bright red too! lol I also really liked the Honda Passport, but both of these are considered midsized (no third row of seats). I'm sure if your daughter had a vote she'd get the Xterra. It looks cool too. :) Oh, and my brother has a 95 pathfinder that he beats the hell out of. No problems to report.

I'll be in Vegas on Business (yeah, monkey business... ) friday April 4th for 5 days. I'm staying at Belagio. It's the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) convention. 5 days of sitting in front of the Blackjack tables...LOL. I think I can handle that! :^) There are 5 of us from work that go (the owner included). We had a great time last year. I'm not looking forward to it or anything. 78 days to go. :^) Tomorrow will be 77. I'll have to mark it off.

We need to scope out a place for the Vegas meet. I'm thinking something off the strip for an initial gathering, but then some strip cruising and some parking for photo ops. Maybe even a drive into the desert for some cool photos.

I'm thinking of maybe at the Vegas International Raceway, but I haven't looked into it.

I'm afraid to admit after reading here about the Belagio but I'm staying at the Sahara, I got it on the internet and I've stayed there 3 times in the past, and there is one machine that I want to check up on. It has a habit of taking my money so my past law enforcement investigative skills will be put to use and I will come up with a solution or charges will be laid. I do have a sense of humour and I think that was great Russklass. I will bookmark it.The new rules about luggageat airports starts to-morrow so it should be an interesting exercise.

One place that I think would make a great photo shoot would be Red Rock Canyon. It's a nice drive and is not packed with tourists or at least the time I was there. There are lots of parking lots around the drive area, but I will keep my eyes open and let you know. The Sahara is the home of a lot of race cars and displays for Indy etc. The hotel might like the opportunity to stage or possibly sponsor a meet. I guess I could make some inquiries. What do you think?

Not too long ago, several rattles developed in my 2000 300M. Problem areas are the driver's door (a hollow rumble) and upper dash (where driver's side A-pillar cover meets black plastic up by the windshield). Anyone else experience this? Any suggestions?
  • beach15beach15 Member Posts: 1,305
Boy, have you come to the right place. As anyone here will tell you, we have one of the most rattly 300M's ever made! Ask either me or my mother the owner, and you'll have a story that goes on and on!

Lately now, even after being creamed from behind pretty hard in an accident, the main rattle we've had for over a year is right behind the gauge cluster. This is extremely annoying and to date, I think the car has been in for this at least 7 or 8 times (along with many other problems). This one is ALL the time, regardless if the road is smooth as glass or a buckboard. From what I've seen, I don't think the dealer has ever gotten close to fixing it, they just say "Oh, we tightened a few screws", in other words they forgot about it and touched nothing.

As for other rattles, where do I begin? I think when the same rattle appeared, there was also a banging noise in the dash that sounded right down inside the center when you'd drive over a really nasty street or something. Then, the back door panels were loose at the rear edges and would vibrate and rattle over bumps. Then, there was a slight rattle in the headliner near the sunroof that came and went pretty quick. Also, if you drive down certain gravel driveways, the front door panels also vibrate, creak, and rattle pretty badly. In addition, once or twice before, when driving on a few roads where the pavement was ground off, and there was some loud buzzing that reverberated badly across the roof and the back window creaked. Oh yeah, and when we first got the car back from being rebuilt, there was a slight buzzy noise on each side of the dash near where you mentioned, where the a-pillar and black dash piece meet.

Okay, wow, I think I might be done. But then again, we also get some other weird noises that come and go from day to day. Just to note, none of these have ever been fixed, with the exception of the back door panels that the dealer did a TSB# I gave them that told how to tighten the panels up. Also, one thing that I've noticed is that the plastic used for the 300M's interior is naturally creaky. If you notice, they tried to make it not look hard and cheap by using softer materials, but the problem is, the softer stuff flexes more, thus making more creaks and rattling.

See what I told you, ask about rattles in a 300M and we can write you a novel!

After a few months of ownership, I used to hear a slight, irritating dashboard rattle on my 98 Concorde Lxi, whenever I was driving on rough roads. I also noticed that,at certain times, the rattle disappeared completely. Then I realised that, the rattle used to disappear when the ashtray was 'open'. The ashtray itself was very tight and not rattling. But something caused a rattle when the ashtray was closed. I have since removed the ashtray.

This has been talked about in some form before, but what digicams do you guys use and/or recommend. I know sdmike, you have the Fuji 1300 and it takes some very nice pictures from what I've seen. The reason I ask is, I ordered and then got a new Kodak DX3215 for Christmas and loved it. The pictures were great and I got a very good deal, $179.95 plus a free 16MB card. But, after about 3 days of use, I think I set it down a little too hard and the zoom no longer worked so I sent it back. I'm now in the market for a new one.

So, sticking mainly to under-$200, what do you recommend?
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
Check out camera reviews at www.megapixel.net, and camera pricing at zdnet or pricewatch. I have the fuji finepix 1400 and I love it. My dad and brother just bought the finepix 2400...the 2+ megapixel version of the 1400 (which is 1.3 megapixel). Both cameras are in the $250 range though.

I go mountain biking out at red rocks (blue diamond) and I agree that it would make a great place for photos. Check with the Sands and see what they think. Any place that will give us cheap hotel rates and be nice to us sounds ok by me. :) Also see if there is still a Race Rock Cafe downtown. They had some incredible cars in there.

I went to the Barrett-Jackson auction today. It was well worth the $20. It is presented by Chrysler and the first things you see are all Chrysler products. They have the Chronos and the Atlantic concepts as well as a silver 300M Special.

My favorite car of all was the 300G convertible. Green with a tan top, it looks like it would be at home on a showroom floor. Just beautiful. There were about a half dozen other 300's of various ages.

The economy seems to be keeping the prices down. I saw a 1984 turbo Bentley go for $18k, a 1959 Chrysler Imperial went for $13,500 and a nice Mercedes went for $17,500.

As SDmike 2 figures most of us 300M drivers are over the hill I have to figure out what I will need for this trip. From my house in Ontario to Las Vegas is about 3000 miles so I will require.
    1) Travelling time 3000 miles divided by 40 miles per hour equals = 75 hours of driving and if you add in 12 hours of sleep per night plus two, three hour nappies per day I guess it would take me around six days to get there.
    2) Four right turn signal light bulbs as mine are always left on and burn out frequently.
    3) Two dozen "Depends" ( I like to change at least three times per day.)
    3) One gallon of Pepto-Bismol.
    4) Spare set of dentures.
    5) One gallon of dark brown hair dye.(Or if they have an Inferno Red dye I could try that.)
    6) Cell phone so my wife could call me daily to remind me where I'm heading too.
    7) Daily notes to remind me that I don't need to turn on the seat heaters when it's 80 degrees in
    Arizona.
    8) Put my Frank Sinarta CD's in the trunk when I get there and pop in all my Pat Boone CD's
into the changer so you guys would know I'm up to-date with the latest tunes.
    9) Try to convince you guys in the U.S that when I'm drooling that this is actually how we
    Canadians sweat.

You must not be a true M'er to average only 40 miles and hour.
    1. Most M'ers average around 90 (not counting stops for tickets).
    2. I am glad I am not you. (I would have to replace six bulbs (I rewired my tail lights)).
    3. Better double it (you can get veeerrry relaxed in this car).
    3. Looks too much like car polish.
    4. Don't forget the teflon spacers so you don't grind you teeth while behind slow drivers.
    5. Looks too much like motor oil.
    6. Get Caller ID for it. (no distracting calls while at the meet)
    7. Leave the warmers on it only 60's here.
    8. Pat Boone, boy you are hip! I am still with the Beach Boys and Tommy Dorcy.
    9. Just tell them it the cars, and stay close.

    I got the 300 Hemi C from E-bay cost $18 plus shipping. I did a search under 300 Hemi C. The 300B I got from a friend (Costco) for $9.

I went to the local sears and while walking from my car with my son I came across a gentleman (retirement age...ahem) asleep at the wheel in a parking spot waiting for his wife. He was driving a gorgeous '01 steel blue / slate with chrome wheels and luxury package. He heard me telling my son (4 years old) that the car is like "daddy's" and the guy woke up. Turns out he's in San Diego on vacation from Indiana. I said, "ok, it's a rental then", but it turns out that they DROVE out. Gotta love the M. :) He said the only problem was keeping the car under 90. I told him about the club and this place, so maybe he'll turn up (although it's equally as likely that he thought I was crazy and was just nodding so I'd go away).

Thanks for the feedback. I need to find out what year they started putting in the new 3.5L engine. I think it may be '01, but I hope it was the 2k. The mid-size SUV is what we want.

I will check out the Sahara for rates(you said Sands, that is now the Venitian) I will check out the other place and let you know, only after I check out that slot machine that I had the trouble with. I am there Sun-Thurs, so I should have time to make inquiries.
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
whoops. You caught me. :) I haven't stayed at the Sahara. Where is it? North strip? I've stayed at the Venetian, Luxor, Monte Carlo, and Rio in the past. All were exceptional. I'd like to try the Alladin too. They had just finished it last time I was there and it looked nice. Is the suspect slot at the Sahara?

My girlfriend pokes fun at the M by relaying that most all of her M sightings are driven by old people (she's 22, but she means people that I at 36 would consider old as well). I have to admit, that's what I see, too. I guess I just have to consider myself lucky that I didn't have to wait so long to own such a car!
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
Hey, since I'm 40 does that mean I can date a 26 year old? Cool! Wait till I tell my wife! ;)
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
Ok gang, time to get serious here. I have posted a message on the club board inquiring about dates. To give everyone at least a month to get organized we're looking at the weekend of 2/23 or 3/2. If you're interested in attending please either post a message on the appropriate club board or email me at mritchi1@san.rr.com. Once I get an idea of the target date I can start to look for hotels, etc.

Hey why not stay in the DC family if you want a SUV. The Liberty is a nice machine ,as well as the Grand Cherokee or the Durango.Do not overlook these trucks . Why not buy North American ???
  • mikeyjohnmikeyjohn Member Posts: 365
The Sahara was completely remodelled, in I believe 1999 and it is really the last hotel on the strip close to the Stratasphere, and also close to Circus Circus. I have stayed at the Rio, Palace Station, Excalibur, and others over the last 10 years. I just find the Sahara a nice cheaper place (with crooked slots LOL) and fairly quiet. The theme of the hotel has turned to Nascar and several of the cars are on display and they also have Virtual Reality race car area that appears to be quite a hit, several nice restaurants, and also a decent buffet. It is easy to get in and out without the hassle of traffic etc.

I went and had the noise that I have been hearing in my 2001 M checked out.

They said that the noise was reduced when they put the stock air filter back in instead of my KN, but it that it did not solve the problem.

I told them that the noise was actually there prior to the filter change and that I knew that that was not a factor in the problem.

He went on to explain that the problem was a known issue with the throttle plate, and that STARTECH? was working on a fix.

    Anybody ever hear this?

Does anyone know how to properly remove the cover on the tweeters in the front doors? I'm considering replacing them, but want to know how first ;) The lower door speakers are easy...

Also, any suggestions as for speakers would be appreciated.

Hi all, check out the club board under performance-air intake.

bigjohnson300m has posted information on new K&N part number 63-1029 Off Road Kit for 300M. He got one from www.summitracing.com for $205.00. Great300M says that they are now selling it for $225.00. I've found that they are presently out of stock. Would also need to get a crankcase airfilter, and this is not really street legal. However does anyone else have experience with this yet. I love what Scotian and 300Michael have done but for us that are "not as adapt" this might be a quick solution to getting a cold air intake.

I spent a few days in Vegas last year. I decided to stay "downtown" at the Golden Nugget, which is a 4 star hotel (Steve Wynne). I had heard Fremont St. was more hospitable to small time players (me!): looser slots, more lower limit tables. I played $3 blackjack regularly at Binion's and asked to be rated. I actually got comp'd 2 dinners! I'm not sure that Strip hotels would comp cheapos like me.

I enjoyed the stay. The Fremont St. Experience at night is fun and there are regular stores (Baskin-Robbins, Pizz Hut, etc.) as well as 99cent shrimp cocktail at the Golden Gate (as well as they give away decks of cards). A little less crowded, a little more "Old Vegas" and cheaper! TO hit the Strip, I grabbed one of the city busses or private trolleys. I'll probably stay downtown again...
Enjoy the meet. I'm jealous. Luckily, I have the CT casinos to take my money...!

For a bargain on the strip, try the Imperial Palace.
Yes, I know it's old, but they have some very nice rooms, and some very good rates.
The location is great, mid-strip, right across from Caesars. They also have a magnificant auto collection, loaded with million-dollar cars.
Don't miss the fountain show at the Bellagio! A different show every 15 minutes.
I agree with laurasdada about "downtown". Fremont street is well worth a visit.
My favorite place to stay is still the Luxor. It's the only hotel where the rooms are not just another box.
Another good value is the Stratosphere. At the far north end of the strip, but beautiful rooms, in the new wing, and very good rates.
    Wish I could join you!
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
While I appreciate what you guys are saying about downtown, I've spent about a day's worth of hours there over the last several years and have been disappointed. The Fremont Street Experience is interesting the first time, but I didn't like the old n' dirty impression that the casinos gave me (nothing against the old and dirty people that post here...heh). There were shuttered buildings, several with their neon and chasing lights in need of significant repair, and not to mention (but I'm mentioning it) the dark and dangerous nature of the side streets off Fremont. I tend to read a bit about where the locals do and what their impressions are, and most of them seem to favor the casinos that are neither on the strip or downtown (although downtown is preferred over the strip). The locals also have an aversion to the stratosphere because of shoddy construction claims.

I agree with you about the Luxor. It's my second favorite place to stay and always seems to be affordable if you find the right deal. Personally I prefer a high-level room in the pyramid, but a friend recently stayed there and tells me that the towers are nicer. My wife and I got a hot-tub room way up high once...very very nice. What I truly like about the Luxor is that the casino isn't as crowded or as smokey as others, the rooms are very well insulated for sound, and they have a very good buffet that you don't have to wait 2 hours to get into. My favorite hotel is the Venetian, but I can't afford to stay there anymore at over $250 per night. I stayed there when it just opened for about $150, and BOY were the rooms nice. My third favorite is the Monte Carlo. Subdued and not as flashy as others, but beautiful throughout.

I'd have to say that my least favorite is Paris. Crowded with low ceilings that made it worse. Granted I was there when it just opened, but what a mess. The Excalibur is also showing its age.
  • laurasdadalaurasdada Member Posts: 4,725
...that besides the Nugget, the casinos on Fremont are a bit "Old Vegas." I tended to stay on Fremont, although one day, my brother flew in from LA to stay a couple of days while I was there. After winning a few $$$ at Binions, he decided to hit some pawn shops. We went into one on one of the (dark) side streets and were let in the locked front door by a gentleman with a .45 strapped to his belt. He wasn't a cop or rent-a-cop, probably one of the owners. What a warm and fuzzy feeling. My bro haggled over a used leather jacket, buys it, puts it on and out into the 107 degree heat we go...
I, too, think the Luxor had a great buffet! Definately check out the Imperial Palace auto collection. When I was there, all (most, at least) of the cars were for sale! I had hoped to win enough to buy a '67 Mercedes. Came up just a bit short...
I do plan on retiring to Vegas. Unfortunately, my wife is ensuring that I can't retire until I'm about 88!
My '99 Platinum 300M turned 32,000 miles today. 4,000 miles of warranty left. No worries. Great car.

    Hey Splatt-

The door sail speakers are accesible by removing the Philips screws. After that you need to get a little creative to get your new tweeters mounted. I've changed mine to the Rockford-Fosgate Fanatic "Q" component setup. If you are going to do this, however, I would mount the x-overs in the trunk near the amp and if you use the stock amp, just connect the proper wires into and out of the x-overs. The wiring pinout is a couple dozen messages earlier on this board by Scotian. I'm going to eventually replace the Infinity amp with a 4-channel Rockford-Fosgate 600.4. It's not difficult once you know what wires go where. If I were really ambitious, I would replace all the speaker wiring as it's only 18 gauge, but for now I'm happy. Good Luck!

Every year when Comdex takes over Vegas the porn industry takes over the Imperial Palace. Some kind of Porndex or something. My buddies and I went in after getting free admittance tickets handed to us in front of Comdex. While I'm open to freedom of lifestyle and expression, the things that I saw inside that building would bring back some horrid flashbacks if I ever stayed there. lol

Scott, go to Fotki.com. They're the best, and easiest I've used, completely free, and are rarely if ever at all down like Photopoint (it hasn't happened yet). And yes, you can put whatever comments you want with the pics.
