Please introduce yourself!

My name is Karen and I'll be your host. Let me know what discussions you would like to have included in the Ford Focus ZX3 Owner's Club folder. Perhaps take a look at the already established Owner's Clubs for ideas? Anyone care to be a representative/Community Leader for the club? Let me know!

Looking forward to meeting everyone!

Finally, a club for this neat little car! I bought my CD Silver 5-speed ZX3 in February 2000; it was built in December of 1999. 6000 miles to date, and a bunch of recalls later, my fiancee now drives the car, but I keep up with this great group and have enjoyed the input since Part One.

I must say that silver_bullet has been an enthusiastic ZX3 owner and participant from Day One. I'm glad your patience has paid off!

Hard to follow Silver Bullet. Well said, except the part about your fiancee now driving your beloved ZX3. Really, glad your still here. Can't say for sure that I have been around since Part One, but it's been a while anyway.

Nice to meet you Karen S.! Will check out the other clubs to get some ideas, even though I already have some. Car lady, I hope you keep checking up on us now that we have the club.

    Hi All,

Been around since last March and bought my 5 speed on March 31st. Enjoy checking daily on the site and enjoy the feedback pro and con on the Focus. I still have had no problems after about 9,000 miles and have had the wheel bearing repaired but have not opted for the "A" pillar fix yet. Not sure if I want the hassle. I am going to have the master cylinder (clutch) done one of these days. Very happy with the car and about the only thing I can add that does not square with the majority is the gas mileage. I have always had between 33 (city) and 37 (highway). This has been my experience from the second tank to the present. I am certainly not complaining. Glad we have a club. Happy driving to you all and remember to enjoy life and not worry about the small stuff.

    Hi,

I'm Charlie and have had my autumn orange ZX3 since February 20th, built in December... now it's got 13,500 miles. It's my 11th and most fun vehicle I've owned to date.

My brother and his daughter also own ZX3's, one a a rainforest green auto, and the other a 5 speed silver. So during the holidays, we had our own ZX3 get-to-gether at my Dad's house. See, Dad's a Chevy man from way back, so having 3 Fords parked in his yard...well...:)

Good luck with the club... it'll be great, and worth the wait!

From zx3 .... A big "Thanks" ladys, for the Club.

    For Z-Club "Forum Leaders" --- I nominate Silver Bullet, PCleveland2, ZX3Beast.
They're always here, good guys, and full of info. (Wot more could you ask, O' lovely ladys)???

My Z has 5000 "trouble-free" miles since Delivery in June. Been in Ford Dealer Service dept ONLY for Recall'S or oil change.
I bypassed having "A-Pillar" thingy done, after following posts written by above guys, and others.
MPG is around 26City/30+HiWay. Sweet, sweet car.

    QUESTION:
Am I hurting the engine of my Z, by letting it warm up 15-20 min.(idle speed) on these bitter winter mornings --- while I wait in nice warm house, guzzling hot coffee?
FGaydos1 said doing it, "uses gas" -- but didn't say if it harmed engine.
Anyone else care to comment on this?
Thanx to FGaydos1 for Reply and thanks in advance to any one else who cares to weigh in.
(Ford Dealer wants $140 (Pts/Lbr) to install Factory engine-block heater).

my name is walt.the "z" group has always been a fun
group with a great sense of humor. the carlady has
done a superb job in allowing a lot of latitude in
our discussions this past year and keeping the pur-
pose of the forum in perspective.my" beast" was
built dec.99 and purchased jan.00. i sincerely appreciate all the advice, tips and responses posted
the previous year and look forward to reading everyones input in the new club.

If you measure engine life by hours, not miles, you might say yes. But, when you take off with a warm engine with warm oil, the bearings and other moving parts are much happier and should live longer. Now if we could only find a way to do this with the wheel bearings. Oh, the block heater is the best idea. If you can find a aftermarket block heater, the price should be much more affordable. Should go in in less that a hour of shop time.

    HI!
I'm Holly, 24, from Southern California. I have a White 2000 Zx3. I got it in May and I have just over 5K miles on it.It has automatic trans, cruise, power windows, power doorlocks, power windows and and alarm with keyless remote.I also have all five windows tinted. I love my car, except for all of the recalls of course. I love the standard CD player, the leather wrapped steering wheel and especially sitting up high.
  • hkoenen2hkoenen2 Member Posts: 70
Well have owned my ZX3 for about 14 months and just over 10,000 miles and regret the day I stepped into the dealer and well in love with the basic design. You all know about the many recalls and I have had my share of repairs (sticking door handles, AS brake problems, Auto. Transmission, door locks to name just the major problems). Add the lousy mpg (22-24 in town and 31 at a steady 65 ones) and the currently poorly shifting transmission and I don't think I will ever buy a Ford again.
Now if I could only sell this car and buy something differently.

Now to the question of warming up the car. I can see 30 seconds or so to get the oil flowing seems reasonable... (OD I start the car and put my seat belt on and go). Letting it idle for 15-20 minutes seems way to long and wasting fuel. A long time ago the theory was that this would hurt the transmission and other related on moving parts, since they do not get a chance to warm up. In my cab driving days I always shut the car off when idling for long periods.. sure it got a bit cold in the car but my engines and transmissions lasted well past 150K.
  • zx3zx3 Member Posts: 167
Hkoenen2 .... Thanx for input on "idling engine on a Cold Morning before driving off".
Like everyone else who answered -- you don't approve of it, but don't say it "positively will" damage engine.
I've asked this question on-and-off for years, never got "Definitive Answer" pro or con.
It must be one of those grey areas where experts have not settled the question.
I'll not pursue the matter any further, and thank you, PC/2 and other guys who answered.
I'm sorry you had a bad car. Is there a lemon law in your state?

I am Jimmy {Duh} and I have not been here since Day I, but I think I predate - PCleveland2.

I have a 2000 A.Orange ZX3 that I purchased in the first week of March 2000. I love it much.

I am glad we have this club but I am not sure how it is different from the other list.

I, too, have been around for a long time. Purchased my Z Feb, 2000. Gave up on there being an Edmunds Club.

Would like to see a section on "repair and maintence" or maybe "help with problems." Perhaps those who modify their cars would like a separate section of "modifications." Don't know if there is enough interest in this board to have alot of different sections. Hope so.

    Jimmyfocuszx3,
You got my curiosity up. First post was Part II, msg 461, Jan 29, 2000. That's the first one I could find, but it reads like there was a post before it. Not that it matters any. Lots of people predate me.

Hi everybody!! I live in Hollywood CA, and bought my Maliblue ZX3 in July. It's almost at 6,000 miles, and I still LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT, recalls 'n all. I did the first two (left rear wheel and A Pillar), and yesterday received a third notice, about the rear seat. ? ? ? Well, in the first year of any model, stuff like this is bound to happen.

But, it LOOKS so sporty, feels and DRIVES like a big car, and the SPEED is terrific (can pass BMW's on the 101 like they're a '78 Plymouth). I searched and waited about two years, for my perfect little car, and I FOUND IT!!!

I too have a slight complaint about gas mileage. In the city, I get only 20-25mph, and on the highway, it's about 30mph. Twice I've driven up to San Francisco...75,80 all the way, and got exactly 30mph. Oh well.

I'm probably older than most of ya'...let's just say 40-something and leave it at that...but I guess I'm still a kid at heart...or a little crazy??

    This is a neat site too ! ! !

If your first post was "Part II, msg 461, Jan 29, 2000" then you predate me and I was wrong. I hopped on back in April or so, but I could be wrong. Maybe you were gone for a week or two and I thought you were some new guy. Anyways, like you said, no big deal. I cannot abide [however] someone else using Lala Land in a post. I am sure all of the other old guard will remember that I am the Tyrant Dictator for life of that small little land.
Although, no one paid me very much mind back then. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Special Event Chat with Ed Hellwig

    Tues., Jan. 30th, 5-6pm PT/8-9pm ET

Ed Hellwig - Associate Editor, Edmunds.com.

Associate editor Ed Hellwig came to Edmunds with a diverse automotive background that included stints as a gas station grease monkey, automotive spy photographer, and ice rink Zamboni driver. Ed spent five years making sure he hated cold weather at the University of Colorado in Boulder where he somehow earned a degree in American history between beer runs and football games. Upon returning, he proclaimed "snow sucks" and forever pledged his allegiance to the Southern California sunshine. Prior to joining Edmunds, Ed toiled under the iron fist of Tom Lindamood at A&M Specialists, a press vehicle logistics company, as a road-tester and delivery driver. While tooling around in Bentleys and Porsches was less than grueling, Ed just couldn't shake the editorial urge and jumped at the chance to join the Edmunds team. He's now responsible for writing road tests, editing our "Future Telling" column, and assisting in performance testing.

Hello all!!!! My name is Ed, I live in Southern NH. I bought my '01 White ZX3 Dec. 4th 2000. Its pretty much bone stock. I've got 5040 AWESOME miles so far. Been to the dealer for 1 oil change. I plan on some significant mods to my little hot-rod, I'll post when changes are made. So far I've only added hyper white bulbs.

As for the warm up in the mornings, I let mine run until the tach drops to or below 1000 rpm, about 5 minutes. I was told by a friend of mine who is BIG TIME into tuning cars, that 5 minutes is OK...if you start to go to 10 or more, you could damage your catalytic converter due to carbon build up from the exhaust. I asked if it would hurt the motor and he said no, not really, it is more damaging to the cat.

Thats all for now. Looking forward to some exciting and informative posts here!!!

Hi...I'm Jeannie from the Jersey Shore area of New Jersey. I bought my beautiful Sangria Red (auto) ZX3 on March 23, 2000. I have 7,100 (really) miles as of this morning's drive to the train station. The first time I saw one of these cars on the road, I had to have one. I love the car!!! We go this car as a second car to take to the train and do errands. Well, this is our primary car. My husband and I drive it more than our Accord. There's something soooo fun about driving it. With the past two snow storms it handles like a champ!!

Well, I'm happy to see this forum up and running. Hi to all!!!

I have placed an order for a new car so I have to unload my 2000 Focus in Silver. It has Auto, Power everything, Factory CD player, factory 16 in wheels, a/c, and cruise control. I will sell the car with the waterproof seat covers and roof rack. I may also include the bike for a few more $$$. The car was bought in June 2000 and has 9900 miles on it. It has been faithfully serviced by the Ford dealership that it was purchased at. I have all of the records. The sticker was ~$16,500 and I paid about ~$15,200. I am selling it for $13,500 OBO. It is in perfect shape with NO dents, dings or scratches. I am the fanatical guy that parks way far out at the end of a parking lot to avoid these things. . It has also been garaged for all of its short life. VIN and complete pictures of the car available by request at kprince@myfirstlink.net. The car is in the Dallas metro area. Thank you for your time and have a great day!

Is this where we talk about US?

I'm Matt, I bought a 2000 Kona edition Focus in Austin, Texas. I bought it before I knew it had reliability problems...I have only driven Nissans and Volvos in the past and am really, really scared that I bought a lemon.

Constant reassurances would be greatly appreciated ;) Ironically enough, my car's in the shop for 2 recalls...they gave me an Olds Alero rental car that sux.

It's really funny that I dislike GM products so ardently... I work for GM in financial reimbursements.
  • pcleveland2pcleveland2 Member Posts: 516
Have had 3 Nissans and one Volvo. 27,000 + miles on my ZX3 with only one problem. Am not going to complain yet. Much nicer than the Nissans except for the gas mileage.

    Hi focusmatt,

I've gone through the 4 recalls on my 2000 ZX3 (built in 1999) and they were all taken care of. I've had enough cars to compare this one to and for me after 13000+ miles this is the best ride yet for the money.

So far I haven't had to leave my car in the shop and I sympathize with those that have. My brother's 2000 ZX3 is an example of what can go wrong with a car, but he still loves it. But as another example, his daughter's ZX3, which has been trouble free for close to 20,000 miles now. They bought their cars from the same dealer on the same day.

And I've seen the lists of recalls on other brand names, so the Focus has plenty of company. And recalls do indicate that there are fixes for those specific problems. Hopefully, now that we are by the first year, we'll see fewer recalls and some real improvements in parts quality and service. Like the service lady told me their techs are getting to be experts at fixing them. For us first year owners, I guess we've been the guinea pigs. So now we're into a new model year and time will tell. I wouldn't give up on yours, since there are alot of good ones out there, besides those with problems.

Spend the last week in Germany and ended up with a rental Mercedes A class. This car is about the same seise as the Focus but taller and a bit less trunk. The one I had was powered by a 1.4L engine with a 5 speed. Even with the small engine far better performance than my ZX3. On top of that the top speed is around 105mph and I got just over 34 MPG running flat out. Normal driving according to the manual should give you above 40mpg on the highway. Wish I could get one in the US. Other great cars in that size are the Audi A2 or one made by Opel (GM). Of course my all time favorite would the Smart car made by Mercedes. Would by that instantly.
  • hkoenen2hkoenen2 Member Posts: 70
Forgot to mention that while in Germany I got another recall notice. This one for the left hinge of the back seat. I think Mine was fixed a long time ago after it broke. Oh well, I am sure there will be a reason to take it in soon to get my two outstanding recalls taken care off.

Hey! I love my car, but unfortunatly my Z has been injured. Someone smashed off the driver side mirror. :( I called the dealership where I bought it and they did not have the part. Said I can come in and prepay, but still wouldn't get it till Fri. Does anyone know a good ford dealership they trust in the Boston area where I can try calling to see if they have the part earlier than that? Help me!

Have you tried Stoneham ford (on rt 28 in Stonham). Or maybe 128 ford (93N to 128N to North ave exit. turn left dealrship is on right, next to highway) in Wakefield, MA. Both of those dealers have pretty big parts depts. I would go to Stoneham personally. Nice to see some else north of Boston here.

I'm extremely ticked right now and just need to vent. Dropped the car off this morning at 5:30am for an oil change, tire rotation, and recall work. When I called on Monday, I was assured that the part was in. Well, guess what, the cars done all but the recall work, why because parts not in stock. I've had it. Every time they say a part is in it's not and I have to bring the car in again. I can't take it. So I logded a complaint with owner connect. I called and the girl took down the info and is going to forward it. I know it won't get anywhere but at least I complained. I just feel like I've be led to too many times. I love the car hate the service. I think I'm going to take it to another dealership and see how it goes. Ahhh now I feel better Thanks
  • silver_bulletsilver_bullet Member Posts: 1,339
You have a right to be upset - I've learned to never go to the dealer until the service advisor actually puts his hands on the parts needed. If he says they've got 'em, I make the appointment and show up on time for the work. Like you, I feel it's not the car, it's who sells and services it that makes the experience sour for so many people.

Thank for sympathizing...They actually all of a sudden out of nowhere found the parts after I screamed a little. The only thing was I asked to have the doors lubed because they make a horrible noise, they claim they did but as soon as I got home they were making the noise again. I can't wait tp get a hold of the guy who sold me the car. He said if I ever have a problem let him know, well if he would call me back than I can say my peace. Anyway, thanks again

I have only owned my '01 ZX3 for 3 weeks. It is "egg yolk yellow". I don't know how they came up with that name; the car is more "canary", and since I bought it at sundown, I didn't realize how bright yellow it was until the next morning. The rear bumper was slightly crooked, and, like everyone else, I'm disappointed with the gas mileage (~25 city/hwy). The car's peppy unless you're going up a hill, and compared to my previous car (Corvette), it's a slug. But compared to other compact cars I've ridden in, the acceleration isn't bad. I like the ride, handling, button locations, stereo (CD). This car is MUCH more comfortable than the Corvette, because it's easier to enter/exit, and it's nice to sit up higher. I bought this car because I wanted better mileage for commuting, I wanted a more comfortable car, and a more dependable car. I've accomplished my goals (although time will tell on dependable...is the '01 free of the recalls that plagued the '00?) - the question now is, will the color grow on me? (in a good way...)

Bought my son a 2000 Dirt Kona and liked it so much that when my Saab 9000 CD died this week, I got myself a Dirt Kona too. The ZX3 is small on the outside and big on the inside--more headroom that the Saab. I love the 16 inch wheels, sophisticated color, and the roof rack really accentuates the roofline. Distinctive car--doesn't look like anything else.

My name is Sean, and I just picked up my 2001 infra red ZX3 yesterday. I'm having a tough time today because I've got a lot of busy work to do but I can hear the ZX3 whimpering outside. I think it wants to go for a drive on this beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon here in Seattle.

Great little car - I can't wait to get to know it better!

Bought my 2001 twilight blue ZX3 in September and still get a thrill looking at her and climbing in for a drive. I took two 14 hour trips down south (I'm a New Yorker) and got to know my baby really well, so I don't mind the 9000+ miles on her. I logged on to Edmunds when I was car shopping in August/September and got the answers I needed. Am glad to see there is a ZX3 club and will bookmark the page to stop in more regularly.
I remember seeing something about polishing and the problem with it permanently sticking to the molding. Does anyone have a remedy for that problem? Haven't had a problem with polishing yet, but want to be proactive in case it does.
Haven't had any major problems with the car yet, but did get a recall for the rear seat hinge and called my dealer - they're going to call me when the part gets in. I did have a problem with a 1 inch scratch in the paint on my hood on delivery and Ford repainted it for me. Unfortunately for me, the clear coat is peeling off. I called about that too, and my dealer said he would take care of the recall and the paint at the same time.
I too, noticed the fuel gauge problem but my key was in my pocket when I filled it up.
Oh, I noticed that when the roads aren't plowed well or at all, the snow really piles up behind my front tires and causes my wheels to lock if I put on the brakes. I got into the habit of cleaning them before I drive off and avoiding patches of snow but it sometimes is unavoidable. It also doesn't matter how fast or slow I'm going - if there's a lot of snow accumulated, then I have a problem. Any others notice this problem? Any suggestions?
  • jnmartinjnmartin Member Posts: 36
sorry all, didn't mean to write a book!
  • pcleveland2pcleveland2 Member Posts: 516
Know what you mean by the wheel wells filling up with snow. I didn't like the stock Goodyear RS/A tires in the snow and got snow tires. Don't know where your at in NY but I recommend snows in western NYS. Did not have the problem you described with the wheels locking up, but the RS/A are not that great stopping on snow and ice which could have been the problem. If your talking about them locking on bare pavement, I would get that checcked out.

I have the firestone tires and 16" wheels and they locked on snow. I wasn't going too fast as the roads weren't plowed yet, but it felt like my buick did when I drove through a blizzard - out of control. It happened more than once on one morning commute and it I remember correctly when I was turning the steering wheel to either turn the car or to move around a snow patch. I took my foot off of the gas, tapped the brake and tapped the gas again and then had control once again.

My budget prevents snow tires, so I'll have to make due with cleaning my wells every time I go somewhere or when I notice loss of control while driving.

One morning, though, I noticed so much snow behind the driver's front side that the tire had made grooves in the snow. :-( I started taking the thruway to work because they plow first and I don't have to crawl to work. They're pretty good at plowing (central new york), so I'm not too worried, but I hate losing control like that.
  • zx3beastzx3beast Member Posts: 661
    pat,
i wish now i had invested in snow tires. you are right, the stock
goodyear tires do not inspire confidence when braking. in fact, i have
found them to lock-up real quick, regardless of speed. they are fine in the rain and dry surfaces but snow is a whole different game. if i could
have predicted all the snowfalls here,i would have bought them. snow in
the philly area is for the most part a one day event. however, one may not get to drive another day without the proper tread surface. new
    shoes are on order.

think spring! winters almost over!! summer is a coming!!!

On the down side, I hit something with my left front tire, impacted on shoulder of tire and ruined it. Only have winters on front right on and for rest of season. Matched directionals. Will have to order a new one before next winter. Hakka Q's held up extremely well except for the lack of road hazard warranty which I am not happy about.

do you think that if I buy the focus mud flaps, it would cut down on the snow accumulation in the wheel wells? Or would it cause more of a problem as there will be less space between them and the tire??

We're still seeing snow up here in CNY and even though my focus snow-driving skills are getting better, I'd like a prevention or something that will allow me not to worry so much about driving in snow that's not been plowed.

    Thanks'

    I'm introducing myself -- proud mother to two Foci -- 2000 SE wagon (pitch black/fully loaded) and a 2001 ZX3 (twilight blue/dark charcoal/fully loaded).

Fantastic cars; traded as relatively new SUV in for the ZX3 because of the adv. trac snow handling. Ended up acquiring a car from the dealer (trade) rather than order. A mistake? I don't believe so, but the color isn't exactly what we wanted, but do you really notice when you're in the car?
