Oil type for a Mustang GT

I just purchased a 2000 Mustang GT. In reviewing maintanence requirements, I have discovered that the oil cap on the engine states 5w20 is required; the owners manual references 5w30 in two places. I contacted my dealer, and FORD. One states to follow what the oil cap requires, the other says to follow the owners manual. Anyone know what the real deal is?

    Ha, love it when the dealer and manufacturer can't agree. Looks like the 5W20 is the coice but still hard to find outside of a dealership. a 5W30 synthetic may be okay as it flows very easilty which is the main reason for the 5W20 anyway. Whoever says 5W30, ask them to put it in writing.

    5W20 is to raise the fleet gas milage averages. Prove me wrong.

    I've not seen nor heard of anything that says they are making the engines any different. I've run many an engine past 100,000 miles on 10W30. I would not use 5W20 without engineering technical justification.

    Yep, they gotta get those CAFE ratings up and EPA people happy somehow. Could be worse though. Could have Corvette, Trans Am, Camaro type shift linkage which forces a 1-4 upshift on light throttle upshifts. Now THERE'S a plan for fuel economy.
