I too think the oil filter looks rather puny.

I ordered a dozen oil filters for my 99LX and I got filters that are roughly half as tall as the one that came on the car.

I have to say the oil looks rather dark (even with a full synthetic) by the time 7500 miles rolls around. Are there two sizes of oil filters for the Pro engines? If so, what's the PN for the higher-capacity one?

Vocus, I know how you felt. For me, it was a sinking feeling in my stomach. I like the idea of a hit and run being a felony. That should be a federal law. Mazdafun- I use Motorcraft filters for my car. The number is FL-816. They are bigger than the Mazda filter. Purolator Pure 1 filters are supposed to be the best, but they don't make them for our cars. The Motorcraft filters ARE Purolator Pure 1 filters with a Motorcraft casing though. Ford Parts has them in stock.

A pox on the fiend. >:(

I was rather upset when someone caused a multiple rear-end collision at a stop light that damaged my Pro. The Audi A4 driver was a little too aggressive about getting into the stopped traffic and caused major damage to a Pontiac LeMans (the small one from Daewoo, rear totally crushed), front & rear bumper damage to a Ford Escort ZX2 (only a few months older than my 99LX) and the rear bumper on my 99LX.

Too bad for the LeMans owner. Looked like he kept it in really good condition, and I'm sure he didn't get much for it. It'd be really hard to find a decent vehicle for what he probably got.

I was pretty TO'd, especially since my baby was just over a year old at the time. Lucky I only had to replace the rear bumper energy-absorber and repair the fascia. I wonder if my water leak has anything to do with the accident?

The A4 was not in bad shape for all the damage it did. Carelessness on the driver's part, IMO. She should have had her license suspended until she completed a full driving course and exam.

I'm fully in support of annual or bi-annual driving-competency tests for EVERYONE. The level of testing that currently exists is a joke.

I too have the effects of a hit-and-run to show on my front bumper, and haven't repaired it yet, because my deductible is 500 and the repair estimate is in the 550-600 range.

Get the repair done, and start parking defensively - that's what I do now :-)

When I park in shopping centers I, too, go waaay out, but that doesn't seem to stop others from parking next to my car. When I get out at some locations I make a note of the make, model, and license numbers of cars on either side. A PDA would be very useful for this, such as Palm Pilot, or a small digital camera you can carry in your pocket. The latter would give you photo proof.

There are those who resent people driving new cars when they can't afford one. At one mall I saw a new Acura Legend the owner had parked waaaay away from other cars. A family in an old Ford van pulled up next to the Acura. The kids in the back threw the side doors open as hard as they could and put a big dent in the Acura's door. Then they drove off to a parking space closer in.(The van had swing-out doors rather than sliding doors)

I got their license number and put a note on the Acura windshield that I had witnessed what happened and would testify if needed. Was never called.

Women will throw their door open and reach for their purses with no thought to the damage the door is doing. One woman hit my car like that and I gave her a good verbal lecture in no uncertain words, she was crying when she drove off. :D

Don't park near big cars, especially driven by over-weight women.

I am a picky parker. I park way out, usually at the end of the parking strip where there is either a curb or a portion of striped lines so I can park halfway in the space and halfway on the lines. I drive both my fiance and other passengers crazy sometimes looking for the perfect space but it's worked. I very rarely get a door ding.

I've also learned to park next to as new/nice of a car as possible if you have no other choice than to park next to somebody. They will usually care more about their car and they know that they wouldn't want dings in their cars so they might be a little more respectful of your property.

    "did I get that right?
He hunted forever, got his Pro, and then split... "

No. That's hkchan. Just didn't have the time. Of course, once I came back, I was relieved to see everyone's still here and nothing's changed.

Vocus (not necessarily in chronological order),
    loved his old Pro,
    loved a Bonneville more,
    bought a new Pro instead,
    loved it,
loved it several dozen more times,
    had problems with the Pro,
    regretted the purchase,
    problems fixed,
    expressed more love,
    had problems again,
    regretted the purchase,
    problems fixed,
    expressed more love,
wanted to add all kinds of accessories every thirty days,
wanted to trade it for a P5,
    loved the car's color,
wanted to repaint the six-month-old car so that six months from now when he gets another new car, he'll get more on the trade-in.

BTW, maltb, someone i know may need your help, if you're available, to locate a Pro.

If anyone is considering buying a Mazda in the Twin Cities, go to Morries Mazda. After touring many dealerships (test driving is a hobby) I found that along with Sears Imported Auto (BMW, MB etc) they have the best customer service in the cities. I've personally purchased 2 cars there and I'm well on my way to pulling the trigger on one more. A typical experience there is: They bring the car to you, NO SALESMAN on the test drive and they don't pressure you. They are the biggest mazda dealer in the upper midwest so I'm sure they can wheel and deal to get the sale.

If anyone wants to know who I used at the dealership just let me know I'll give you the name.

Sorry about the gushing there. It's just that when you find a dealership that doesn't treat you like crud you like to tell people because it's a rare occurance.

Okay, why does everyone have to pick on me for?? :)

I just got my tints done on Saturday, and they look pretty good. Only thing is, I can't roll down any of the windows until tomorrow evening. Saturday, I am going to have the fog lights rewired for like $20 or something. Once I get the lights done, I am going to get a friend of mine (who is a photographer) to do some nice pics of the car.
  • maltbmaltb Member Posts: 3,572
glad to see you didn't wrap your Pro around a pole or anything. No prob if your friend needs assistance.

    Take care,

  • laurakatlaurakat Member Posts: 69
I bought my 626 from Morries. I must admit, the service was good. The service department was friendly, but they could never fix my subtle hesitation problem. The sales woman did ride with us on the test drive, which I didn't mind because she was very cute (I had to refrain from staring too much at her in the rear view mirror since my wife was in the passenger seat...LOL). I'd buy from there again, but it is a bit of a drive to get there (I live in the southern suburbs). So far, I like Walser's in Burnsville, although I haven't started the negotiation process yet. If I can't get a good deal there, I'll zip up to Morries and see what kind of a deal I can squeeze out of them.

I should know this, but I guess I'm looking for you dudes in the know to tell me if I'm right or not. The only differences in the ES and LX (2.0) are cosmetic (w/the exception of the size of wheel), correct? I looked everywhere and cannot find any difference in sway bar size, gear ratio, etc. If that's true, then the value of the year must be the LX 2.0 with free alloys and roof with 0.0%. How could you go wrong? Someone slap me if I'm wrong. Thanks.
  • edmund2460edmund2460 Member Posts: 293
Maybe that's one of the reasons I couldn't find the darn thing (it's so small). Just kidding, I know you have to get under the car to get to it. Just wanted to say that I think the 4 cyl Camry has a small oil filter too, if I remember, from a visit to the dealer. It's very easy to get to, if I remember. The smallest oil filter I've seen is on the Ford Aspire which takes 3.5 Q.

I'm getting paranoid now that some 3 of you had parking lot accidents. I drive my old car to work when I feel it's going to rain, that's how paranoid I've become. Does anyone know whether the 2001 ES rear bumper 5 mile per hour damage has been lessened by redesign. If I recall the 2000 was marked down for excessive damages by the Insurance Inst.
  • protegextwoprotegextwo Member Posts: 1,265
No, it was the 1999 Protege that had the sub-par bumper, the first year of the current Protege re-design. However, the 2000 and 2001 vintage Protege's have a re-engineered rear bumper, that has been upgraded and rated acceptable.

    Respectfully,
    Larry

I know that at the very least the ES has 4 wheel disc brakes (w/ the GT pkg) that you can't get on the LX. Also, I'm not sure about the US, but here in Canada, we can't get power windows on the LX model.
There are also differences in the seats. The ES driver seat is height adjustable, whereas the LX is not. Also, like you said, the wheels on the ES are bigger than the LX (w/ the GT pkg)and on the front of the LX there is a strip of chrome that is body color on the ES.
The ES also has fog lights, white guages, and upgraded upholstery.
The side mirrors on the ES are electronically controlled and on the LX they are manual.
The power locks are standard on the ES but are an option on the LX.
The ABS on the LX does not have to be bought as part of a package, but if you want ABS on the ES you have to get the GT package.
In terms of suspension and ride issues, I'm not too sure....Some of the others should be able to fill that part in.
Oh, and if I'm wrong (which wouldn't be the first time)somebody please let me know so I don't look like a complete fool! :)

    Regards,

    Protege_fan

...taken with the windows up so we can see the new tints! LOL. Now, they will think you are one of those guys the cops keep an eye on.

Why can't you lower the windows, is the stuff glued on? I have always wondered if it prevented lowering the windows if it is thick.

Actually, I have thought about getting tinted windows, but it would defeat one of the reasons I bought the Protegé...great visibility all-around for parking and in tight spots where it's difficult to turn. I'm almost blind, in one eye, so I need big bright windows.

Chikoo--I haven't seen that before, they DO make the Pure 1 filters for the Protoge? If I remember right, I looked it up in the Purolator catalog and they didn't even have a number for the protoge for the Pure 1 filters. Edmund--Toyota Camry 4 cyls have small filters, about the same size as the factory Protoge filter. As far as oil filters are concerned, the factory Mazda filter for our cars is about as small as you can get, I've never seen any that are significantly smaller and I have seen A LOT of oil filters. To everyone else--Beware of parking lots. There are always people out that are careless about other peoples' property. I place more value on a sack of dog crap, than on someone like that. Fowler, thats pretty funny that you made that woman cry. If I caught a guy that did that to my car, he would be limping AND crying as he walked back to his car. ;)
  • mazdafunmazdafun Member Posts: 2,329
Wow, some big differences in how they're trimmed for US and Canada. The LX here has power locks & windows, height & tilt adjustable driver's seat and power windows standard.

What I know the differences are:
no rear disc brakes (drums only)
    1.6L standard, 2.0L engine optional
ABS only available with power moonroof option (dumb combination, IMHO)
    black gauge faces v. white
    different upholstery choices
    smaller wheels, taller tires
    no standard spoiler (better, IMO)
no fog lamps (dealer or DYI add-on)
    green IP lighting v. red
    smaller disc rotors up front

That's all I recall from sitting and looking at the two. I'm sure there're more.
  • mazdafunmazdafun Member Posts: 2,329
Wow, that's one good deal. Good looking care up-close too, especially in red. :)

I guess what I was laughing at before were the two light clusters next to the rear license plate. In any color than red, they stand out and look like a pair of fangs. With the outer light clusters, the whole rear reminded me of a cartoon monster. Too much exposure to the cartoons my kid likes to watch, I guess. :)

Anyhoo, I'll be taking a test drive sometime to see what it's like compared to the P5.

    Hello!

I'm new to the Protege board. As I contemplate replacing my 1994 Chevy Corsica, I've been looking at the 2000 Protege ES and LX models (still under factory warranty), along with the 2001 Hyundai Elantra. I'd rather Zoom Zoom ;-), but I must stay within a certain price range. With taxes included (I live in Colorado), I'd like to stay within the $12,000 range.

Can I find a 2000 ES or LX in this price range, or are my expectations out of whack? Did the 2000 LX have the 2.0 engine as an option? If not, how does the 1.6 engine perform?

Finally, how difficult is it to still find 2000 models on Mazda dealer lots? I haven't looked yet in the Denver area, but they're hard to find where I live.

    Thanks for any information,
    Steve

Looking at AutoTrader.com, there are plenty of 2000 Protege LX and DX models available under $12,000. It looks like the good majority of them are DX automatic models from Hertz Auto Sales. For 2000, only the ES had the 1.8L engine, with the LX and DX models having only the 1.6L. The 1.6L is not a bad engine with the 5-spd, but automatics are a bit on the slow side. It all depends on your driving style, and the 1.6L automatic may suit you.

Are you looking at spending a maximum of $12,000 because you are paying cash? Or are you considering a certain payment that you want to stay under? With 0.0% financing, big discounts, and possibly the S-Plan, you may be able to get a brand new 2001 Protege for close to the same payments of the used one. And, if you are paying cash for it, why? If Mazda will let you borrow money for free, why not stick that $12,000 into a high yield account or investment and let it make money for you instead?

    $250

  • jstandeferjstandefer Member Posts: 805
BTW, the side-impact airbags are available on the LX and ES model Protege's in two different packages. Either you can get the LX or ES Premium Package with power moonroof, side airbags, and ABS, or you get the side airbag/ABS package separately.
  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
    Just a quick note...
Side airbags are NOT available on any trim level in Canada. Not sure why but they aren't....kinda disappointing.
  • mazdafunmazdafun Member Posts: 2,329
I'm glad Mazda now offers the side airbag/ABS separately from the power moonroof. Thanks for the tip.

If it'd been offered that way when I got my 99, I'd have gotten the side bags and ABS. I just won't fit into the Pro with the power moonroof.
  • theparallaxtheparallax Member Posts: 361

my dealer in philly has brand new 2000 ES's (not pre-owned) still on the lot. He is willing to let them go for somewhere around $12000.

Great deal for an unused car....if you don't mind the 1 year depreciation it has accrued.
  • chikoochikoo Member Posts: 3,008
The mazda OEM filter is still big compared to the Mobil-1 filter that is recommended for the ES - M1-108.
Dimensions of the box : 2.5"x2.5"x2.5"
Guess the the size of the filter it holds ;)
  • mazdafunmazdafun Member Posts: 2,329
That's about the size of the box my Mazda filters come in (a little cube). The factory-installed filter was about 50-percent longer. Thus my consternation. I notice the oil gets quite dark before 7500 miles (or even 5000) rolls around.
  • mazdafunmazdafun Member Posts: 2,329
If they'd been available in '99, I'd have gotten them. As it was, they weren't. :(

Owners of newer models should be glad they got 'em if they have them as they add another star to the side-crash protection ratings.

Oh well, were I to buy today, I'd be choosing between the P5 and the Elantra GT (probably the P5 as the full 5-dr hatch design allows more cargo volume than the hatch-back design used by the GT). Too bad we don't get the Speed20 version of the P5 state-side. That would be a WRX-kicker, and looks WAY better too.

If your MP-3 is like my Protege ES, my rear doors have speaker grilles in them, but there are no speakers behind the grills. My rear speakers are in the rear deck. I guess the grilles are there in case I want to add rear door speakers.

Not sure if your MP-3 is the same, though, as my Protege has only 4 speakers.

So we FINALLY got the test drives in, I really liked the ES (although I also liked the LX too, the ES handled sooo nice).

We've been doing our number crunching, realized we had more in the credit union saved for a down payment than we thought we had, realized we MAY (this one is iffy) actually be able to get a few hundred for our 1989 Toyota Camry with a V6 (it runs...) so after debate, etc. - we're going to go for the ES!!!!! with abs and moonroof!! in dark green!! (i'm really trying to NOT over do those exclamation marks, but it's very hard).

I joined EAA, awaiting membership number so I can get my PIN for the S-Plan, getting everything together to bring to the dealership for the 0% financing and if everything is in place we'll be there this SATURDAY. If they don't have the car in stock, we'll order it. Dark Green. We're going to Jacobs Twin in Chicago - anyone been there? We test drove at Roto in Arlington Heights - thought the sales guy was very low pressure and I like that, but it's pretty far away (we were in the neighborhood for something else and found the nearest Mazda dealer).

Oh, and my step dad really wants me to forward all the EAA magazines etc. - he's been debating joining them for years and now can reap some of the benefits whilst I enjoy others.

I will be back soon ... if not this weekend, the following (barring unforseen circumstances).

zoom zoom zoom (although I have to say the music on their website bugs me).

Coming out of lurk mode (I've read all of the Protege messages in all of the different boards going back to the start of this year -- I feel like I know you folks) to respond to Momgray re: Jacobs Twin experience.

I bought a Honda Odyssey from Jacobs Twin via Autobytel in 11/99. The purchase experience was pretty good, but for three things:

First, they really lowballed me on my trade. I was in a jam because my younger son was born the day I was supposed to pick up the van (we'd been waiting for it for 3+ months), so I did not have time to do the whole CarMax thing. They won on that one. But I got a good price for the van, so in the end we were only talking a couple hundred dollars probably. Anyway...

Second, the F & I guy tried to sell me some off-brand extended warranty and claimed it was a Honda-backed warranty. A flat out lie. I couldn't believe he was so bold.

Third, there was a problem with the upholstery on one of the seats, and they were great about ordering the replacement, but when I drove the hour to drop the thing off for the repair I found that they had mistakenly sent the stuff back to Honda. So I had to make another trip in a week later. Makes me think twice about buying from somebody other than my local guy next time.

Again, other than those three things, I thought it was a good experience. You can search their inventory at www.jacobstwin.com Note that they have very few ES's in stock, and they've loaded most of the Proteges with plenty of options.

FYI, they do seem to have some P5s in stock if you lean that way. Not that there's anything wrong with that. ;-)

Thanks for the good reading, guys. I lurk every day. I expect to buy an ES 5-speed to replace my 1992 Accord coupe as soon as the 2002 incentive season starts. Oh, and take it easy on the poor Hyundai guys. They've drunk the KoolAid and they don't know any better.

We're in the city itself. There's Old Orchard Mazda - which I hear has awful salespeople but great service. It's about 15 minutes from where I work, 35 minutes from home in good traffic. Once I get the car I'll be taking it there for service, but not sure I want to deal with their salespeople after some of the stories I've heard. There's Jacobs (maybe 20 minutes away from home, an hour from work), there's Roto (maybe 1 hour away from home, 30 from work), and I'm blanking on the others, they were in the 45 minutes to 2 hours range.

Thanks for the heads up on the F&I guy ... I just want to qualify for the 0% financing, no extended warranties, no other extraneous expenses.

As for the trade - well, right now if we get anything we'd be happy (but that's another topic).

    Thanks again.

My neighbor across the street has been renting cars for over a year now. That's renting, not leasing. When he moved here he was driving a Dodge Intrepid; then a few months later he drove up in a Mercury Sable; the Sable was replaced by a Nissan Maxima which has been in his driveway for at least 5 months; then the first of August he gets a Dodge Stratus. All those cars were 2001 models.

Yesterday, in his driveway sits...the only car he has had with a 30-day tag on it...a 2001 Mazda Protegé LX 2.0 in silver with a spoiler, painted mirrors, steel wheels with plastic covers, and automatic tranny. After all those other cars I guess the Pro is the best for his needs, too.

I can’t figure out why no alloy wheels if it has painted mirrors, buying it this late and with the rebates. If he traded those alloys I sure would have liked to have had them.

Story of my life: add that to the list of the things I've missed. :P

There isn't a number for the 99-00 cars either which use the same filter. The DO make them for other mazdas, but not mine. ??????????

Thank you very much but I think 17" wheels would be too large for my LX 2.0, it uses 15" wheels (four lugs). They might look like those 17" wheels on BMW 3-series. LOL

Have you ever looked at the wheels in tirerack.com? I haven't seen any I liked or as nice as the Mazda wheels. Most are downright ugly. Makes you wonder who buys them.

I'm considering buying some 5-spoke wheels from tirerack for my 95 DX to replace the Bo-Ring 13 inch steel wheels. Don't know which ones, yet, and don't even know if I'll go with 14 or 15 inch wheels. Don't say they're all ugly, I have to pick one of those designs!

Any suggestions, people, about which size I should upsize to? I'm going to end up in the DC-Metro are in a few months (no, I won't be able to make the MAPP-2, although I wish I could!). So base it on whether 15's would be too low profile for the DC-area winters and the snow there. Here, in UT, I would go with the 14's for sure.

Also, as I understand it, 14" tires are cheaper. And I have the option of keeping my 13" wheels with all-season tires for winter, unless they'd fetch anything respectable at E-Bay! One score for the 14's and the 15's each!

Oh, I figured I'd also ask if anyone who upgraded to 16 or 17 inch mags has their Mazda 15's for sale :-)

    TIA

No one on the Protege5 topic has responded to my announcement about MAPP II. And other than the interest shown by the "core group" a week and a half ago, I've seen very few comments here. While I won't be upset if this year's MAPP is merely a repeat of last year's, it would be nice to see some new faces and new cars ... especially since some of us have upgraded on our '99s and '00s and there are a few miles on the odo's now. I'm especially interested in comparing tires, as I expect to have a set of Yokohama AVID T4s on my 2000 ES 5-speed by then.

If you're lurking and are interested in an October 6 get-together in Northern Virginia, please respond on this topic or e-mail me at mdaffron@the-rma.org.

By the way, how come we hardly ever hear from any pre-99 owners? You're welcome here too, you know, in case you're lurking!

I agree with fowler3, I think the Mazda factory alloys look much better than most aftermarkets.

The ones I'm considering when I replace my tires are Borbet B, H or T in 14 or 15 inch size. Probably going with Yokohama AVID T4s.

Funny thing, many of the really expensive alloys are truly ugly, but that's only my opinion. :)

Hmm. Should check eBay and see if anyone's selling off their stock 15in alloys.

    mdaffron,

I, too, am looking at replacing the tires on our 1999 ES with the Yokohama Avid-T tires. They have long tread life, are pretty inexpensive, have good reliability, and handle well on wet and dry roads. Good choice!

    twistinmelon,

Awwww. Don't pick on my Hyundai. And my Koo-Aid wasn't spiked with any wacky chemicals. ;) I love it as much as I have loved the 4 Mazdas I've owned. They are actually quite nice cars. Just ask mpgman and some of the others who've owned the new Elantra GT. It's worth a look if you don't have the money for a Protege or Protege5.
