I contacted a couple of dealers around boston. The best price they quoted me for a Civic Ex-l 4 door automatic was 19,306. That price include the $1000 dealer incentive. I believe you can get one for $19k or less. The dealer that quoted that price didn't have it in stock so a dealer with it in stock should be cheaper. That was the price quote, I believe they can go a little lower.

I live in the Chicago Area.

Paid $15,475 (including destination) for the 2009 Civic LX Sedan plus tax, title, doc fee, etc. Luckily I was able to get $4,500 for our clunker trade-in before the govt put the CARS program on hold. Was this a good / bad deal?
  • jikjik Member Posts: 144
can you send me your dealer and agent at jk_send@yahoo.com

chicago is a 3 hr drive for me but price seems quite reasonable. How much was the OTD?

Just bought 2009 Honda Civic Ex. I email all Honda car dealers with in 100 miles range. Rossi Honda quote me $18,056 (not including destination, tax and document fees) and the rest are pretty high. First, went to Boardwalk Honda (5 miles where i lived) for test drive and see if they can beat Rossi Honda price. I had really bad experience with Boardwalk Honda. Buyers beware! beware! They try and fail to rip me off. The whole idea is to have your Target price and stick with it. My Target price plus destination, tax and document fees minus your down payment or your trade in value of your car. Don't be afraid to walk away. And finally went to Rossi Honda in Vineland. My salesman is Dan Pio. I had a very pleasant experience. He's nice, courteous and no pressure at all. I brought my clunker which qualify for $4500 put in as down payment.

Check out truecar.com. It will show you the actual dealer cost (lowest, which I paid for my car), Average paid, factory invoice (overprice) and sticker price (rediculous price). Or you can offer them $300 or $500 below actual dealer cost. I find truecar.com very helpful and of course this site. Just my 2 cents.

What was your final OTD price for your civic EX. Oh and was it a coupe/sedan and man/auto.
    Thanks
  • jikjik Member Posts: 144
that site does not include the factory to dealer incentive of 1000 and price paid look much higher

Bought a new Honda Civic LX-S from DCH Paramus Honda. Here is the break down.
    Negotiated Price- 15900
    Destination- 670
    NYS sales tax- 1388
    Doc charge- 250
    Reg/ title- 195

    OTD Price- 18403

Got a few internet quotes and ended up going with the lowest one I got. Definitely get in touch with Yajaira at DCH Paramus. She will not push you into getting unnecessary options and will try to get you the best price possible. Hope this helps.

I picked up my 2009 Civic Sedan LX AT from Tampa Hondaland Wed. and as usual the whole process was smooth and professional . They have a big selection of styles and colors and I think I made a good deal and was in and out in no time..

from cars.gov, I suppose can use this credit in combination with manufacturer’s rebates and discounts "The CARS Act requires the dealer to use the credit under the CARS program in addition to any rebates or discounts advertised by the dealer or offered by the new vehicle's manufacturer. The dealer may not use the credit to offset these rebates and discounts" , I got couple quotes from 3 differnet Honda dealers days ago for 2009 honda civic, all about 2.5 to 3k below the msrp (which include $1000 honda incentive to dealer), everything went fine they just remind me to hurry up before the end of month. However when I decide to go for it today with CFC program(they said cfc program last 9:00PM tonight, will suspend this weekend until sometime mid-week), none of them honor their quotes, they said if I use CFC , there would be no discount at all MSRP+tax+fee, the second honda dealer gave me only $300 off msrp instead of original $3000 off msrp. What is the
point is if I need to pay $3000+ tax more to get $4500 rebate? of course they have right to sell their cars in full msrp price and also keep the manufacturer to dealer incentive, then the CFC program can benefit the dealer to sell all their overstocks in full MSRP price. One dealer explained to me the paperwork involved in a cash-for-clunkers deal is 6 times heavier than a regular sale, so they are not willing to lose money when doing that much extra work.

Has anyone had XM Radio installed on their Civic? My dealer quoted a price of $559 to add it to the existing sound system. Seems like a lot of money but perhaps not. What do you think?
  • ruking1ruking1 Member Posts: 19,826
I would say think very long and hard about this one. Essentially, if you put this XM radio in will be an annuity generator for the life of the vehicle. The additional difficulty is the next buyer might not agree with the set up and in effect see it as a liability. Either ignoring it in the purchase offer to downgrading the purchase offer.

I'm in NY and today I was able to get a quote of possibly $16,500 if I'm ready to put a $1k refundable deposit on it this weekend (trading in for cars for clunkers). It would come out to around 17,900 OTD price excluding DMV. Is it true NY dealers don't seem to budge? They originally wanted $16,763. This includes the 1k rebate. Can I do better? I said $16,400 and he said no way will that offer be accepted.

Bought a Civic LX-S AT Sedan today in Marysville, OH:

Negotiated price (incl. destination) - $16551
    Document fee - $250
    Title/Filing fees - $25
    OH sales tax - $1134
    Total Price - $17960
    Less CARS Voucher - $4500
    OTD price - $13460

    I think I did pretty well. :D
  • redrover1redrover1 Member Posts: 16
I am no expert but he should not be refusing to put your offer through. He might think this is a negotiating tactic to make you think you can't get lower and will accept his offer. Can you go to another dealer to tell them you have been given an offer by another dealer which is too high and would like them to beat it. the thing is, if you live in an area where there are quite a few dealers you can negotiate the price down between them by asking if they can beat the offer.

With that kind of price it sounds like they are not giving you the $1000 factory to dealer incentive. The best way to get better prices is to make them compete by going to different dealers and negotiating down from a previous offer. If you have time it is best to get quotes through the internet dept through edmunds. It is easier to do this from your home instead of driving around. You can negotiate through email and the phone and then go to a few dealers and beat them down as the internest pricing will not be their best price.

    good luck.

Same thing happened to us! We got an internet price today of $18989 for the EX coupe from a NY dealer. Went in ready to pay cash...spoke to salesman. Waited over an hour ...then the manager came over and said that that since they needed to wait for the "approval" from the CARS program (which would take up to 10 days and beyond Monday when their special incentive program ends from Honda....he'd need to charge us $1500 more for the car!! Personally I think it's rediculous. The trade in will be a Ford Explorer...and we meet all the other Gvmt criteria. THe manager just didn't want to deal with the paperwork. I don't mind paying a little extra but $1500??? Rediculous!
  • christine118christine118 Member Posts: 22
SOrry, the $16,500 includes everything like destination tax excluding NYS tax and DMV (it would be around $17,900ish with NYS tax). I put a $500 deposit down today for it. Is that not good? I did have dealers call me the other day through cars.com, and none of them went that low. I did have one tell me he can get me $17,900 OTD, but I really didn't like the way he was talking.

They are not going to have me sign the contract and take the car until in about 2 weeks because they are going to make sure my 'cars for clunkers' application is approved first.

just purchased my black lx-s manual for $16,525 (including $670 destination) at lujack honda in davenport, ia. otd was $12,943 after $4,500 cfc & $100 scrap. no pressure sales & very personable. i highly recommend asking for the guy whose name is the first part of lujack's.

I just purchased a honda civic LX auto for less than 17,500 (out the door including NJ tax and all the fees) through Kay Honda in Eatontown, NJ. I had been shopping around the NJ area but many would not even negotiate or go below 18,000 (OTD). I saw a posting about someone purchasing a civic from Kay Honda, I contacted them and they had the best price, although I did have to travel 50 miles.
With the $4500 CFC deal and the scrap value, the total cost for the new car was less than 12,400.

The salesperson that helped me was Mike Fabian. I had the car the same day and I would definitely go to him at DCH Kay Honda in the future.
  • christine118christine118 Member Posts: 22
Yeah, I had read about NJ dealerships on here having good prices. It would be hard for me to drive to get out there though. If you can drive there, better for you to get the good price!

I'm a little worried I won't be able to get my Civic. With my paperwork to trade my truck in, my title still has a bank on there as the lienholder because I don't know what happened to the release that we would have gotten years ago. If I can't get the bank to provide me with a release tomorrow, I won't be able to trade in and get the Civic. :(

I had bad experience at Boardwalk Honda they try to rip me off. I had to drive 60 miles to Vineland to get a better deal and no pressure at all. Look for Danny Pio. I'm hearing the same thing at Shore Toyota - What a stealership. Just a warning, folks. Remember to set your own Target price and stick with it. Check out truecar.com.

    2009 Honda Civic LX Coupe
I sent out request for quotes within one hundred miles from my area in NYC. I included NY, NJ and PA. I only got back about 5 quotes in e-mail, I guess dealers were too busy dealing with the rush from the C.A.R.S Program.
All quotes were within $300 of each other, ranging from $16,300 to $16005. $16,300 was the closest dealer to me in NYC and $16,005 was in Philadelphia area.
Then I received a call from the "Internet Sales Specialist" at Plaza Auto Mall in Brooklyn,NY. We spoke for a few minutes, I told her the car I wanted and the best qoute I received of $16,005 she said today was my lucky day because she was going to sell me the car for $15140. I said that would be $15,140 plus Dest. charges am I correct. She said no sir that would be the total and I would only have to add tax and tags to the $15,140 price. I then asked again if there were any other fees added on that I should know about or Doc Fees she said no sir.
I went on to ask if my 2 color choices were available, she had me hold on for a minute, and then said she had 4 in my first choice and 3 or 4 in my second choice. I hung up the phone and made the trip to Plaza Auto Mall about 1/2 hour away from my house. When I arrive at the dealer she the "Internet Sales Specialist"
hands me off to a sales rep, when all is said and done the price comes $16,400 before tax and tags. I told him the quote was $1260 less at $15,140, he tells me that is before Dest. charges and the dealer prep fee of almost $500. I said I was told more than once by the internet sales specialist to only add tax and tags to the $15,140 . After some minutes going back and forth the sales rep called his sales manager into the conversation, then they said they were trying to locate the "Internet Sales Specialist" I spoke with earlier but she could not be found. After all the BS I also found out they didn't even have a car in my first 2 color choices after I was told they had 7 or 8 in my 2 color choices. I've seen plenty of car dealer tactics In all my years of buying new cars, but I have never seen anything as unprofessional as at Plaza Auto Mall. I spoke with a family member who also had a very bad experience at Plaza Auto Mall in Brooklyn, NY. Wound up at another dealer, and now I'm waiting on the approval to go through on my clunker at another dealer in NYC. Will post details when all is done

Well its all over for me.. It was a stupid good deal for me...

Here's my deal.. it was a home run.

2009 White Honda 4-Door Si $ 19,300 out the door
    Honda Rate 2.9 % 24 Months
    C4C- 1988 BMW 735i 185k $ 3,500

    Total: $ 15,800

This was almost a unreal hand out, Why would anyone say no to free money.. It last one week I wonder why ?
  • redrover1redrover1 Member Posts: 16
WOW! I am speechless. That is absolutely horrible the way they treated you. Don't these people know that if you don't buy from them this time you might buy another time? Treating a person like that will insure there will never ever be another time. I assume you heard correctly which dealership was calling you. so again, WOW!
  • christine118christine118 Member Posts: 22
That's horrible. I think that happens a lot that people give unrealistic prices on the phone to get the person through the door. I would be pissed if I drove out of my way to get there!

Did you search for dealers through cars.com? I did, and I never had dealers give me a price through the internet. Instead, they called me and gave me their best price. One place beat out another price one dealership gave me over phone. The other one said they can't do better, but maybe if I come in. I did come in a couple days later and did get a better price than over phone but really had to get them to go down. Wasn't a big difference but it was something.

Why don't you go to the page where you can rate dealers in here...could very well help another down the road. Plaza must be run by morons...don't they know the power of the internet and how many folks will read this review of their shady practices? Why not just do the right thing to begin with and honor the given quote...this dealership will be forever known as a scummy place to do business with so why would they put themselves in that position? Unbelievable.

Plaza Auto Mall of Brooklyn N.Y...."the worst dealer in the world"!

A previous poster (see message 8735) did it through cars.com and got 15 quotes. I guess it depends on your area and the dealers.

The advice of this forum has been very informative. The Truecar actual dealer cost is 16890 for this car. So their cost is 15890 if their dealer money is still available. I saw where several paid around 16500 including destination for this car. My first email to McConnell Honda in Montgomery came back at 17700 and he said they were getting money back so he could not offer the 2.9 at that price. Does that sound right? He also told my wife that was non-negotiable when she went by to drive it. They were very busy. They have the exact car we want but we are just getting started. There isn't much competition around here unless I go 120 miles to Atlanta. I am also checking in Birmingham. Thanks
  • rockypalomarockypaloma Member Posts: 2
I paid $16551 (incl. destination) for this car in Ohio, but couldn't get the 2.9% either because of the incentive. No big deal as my credit union offered me 4% and I will be paying it off in 12 months. I think $17700 is too high.

Are LX-S not popular or was it a mistake of Auto versus Manual?

Just bought a new EX-L Automatic Sedan yesterday after requesting quotes around for two weeks, I think I got a pretty good deal.

Dealership: DCH Paramus Honda in NJ
Model: 2009 Civic EX-L AT in atomic blue
    Sale Price: $18,503
    Destination: $710
    Trade In: N/A
    NJ 7% Tax: $1,344.91
    DMV: $299
    DOC: $249
    NJ Tire: $7.5
    Final OTD: $21,113.41
Financing: couldn’t get the 3.9% special rate since I took the incentive

If anyone is looking for a Honda in northern Jersey, I will recommend to go to DCH Paramus Honda. The dealership has a very large volume of inventories, so you will have plenty of selections. The sales people are very professional. They won’t keep you waiting for hours. I think the business is picking up since the C.A.R.S program rolled out. I haven’t seen so many customers showing up at one dealership for a very long time, but yesterday night the place was crowded.
I think the information from Truecar.com is more helpful than Edmunds or cars.com. Especially check the “Detail” tab on the truecar chart, it will tell you how many cars have been sold at what range of prices. Then you could set up a low but reasonable target for your own price.
  • christine118christine118 Member Posts: 22
I got mine at $16,500 as well including destination. That included the $1,000 cash incentive, so I was told, it's either take the $1,000 or get the 2.9% interest but not both. However, by the time I'd be getting my car will be when my paperwork for my trade-in on the clunkers has been approved which can take 10 days, and the dealer said that financing offer wouldn't be available then anyway.

Oh wait, mine was for the LX, not LX-S! I don't think I would have gotten the LX-S at the same price.
  • jikjik Member Posts: 144
lowest price I have seen for this car LX auto sedan is 15475 incl destination.

recently nobody has reported that low a price. Depends a lot on the number of dealers in town

Just bought a Black Honda Civic Ex today in Oklahoma. OTD Price:18,575. All of the other dealerships quoted me in the mid 19,000''s. I found one dealer who would match the 18,575 and even go a hundred lower but it wouldn't have been worth it to drive to distance.

Hi guys, I've been reading through the postings here and plan to make a purchase within the next couple of weeks. Lots of helpful info.

I've been comparing TMV and Truecar pricing, and I'm not sure what's realistic. Truecar says a "great price" is 1100 below invoice (19,500). Do you think they're including the 1000 cash incentive? I'm getting quotes for nearly 20k before taxes and fees here in Houston. I'm sure they'll go lower, but not sure how much.

Buying my first car (in 04) was a huge pain, trying to do as much as I can online/phone this time around.

    Honda of Danbury Ct...

I made my deal 4 days before days before the C4C Scare, The day I picked up the car at the dealerships it was like a Zoo I'm not sure if they have any left in stock ? they were selling cars like Hot Cakes & that was over 6 Days ago thay had over 40+ C4C in the back lot at that time.

Good luck, I hope you can find one..
  • jfritschjfritsch Member Posts: 958
Yowsers! Yep, with the 5% of americans that can qualify for the CFC program hitting the dealers all at once, car prices are propped up. The other 95 % those needing a car now can pay higher prices AND the CFC program through their taxes (eventually)

Many cars that were selling for $15000 before CFC are now advertised at $17500 or more, with the generous $4000 off from the govt bringing the price down to $13500. (which it would have been for all of us without CFC given the state of car sales and the usual summer clerarance) Awful nice of those dealers to let the pigeon ... er customer keep 1500 of the $4000 don't you think?

Oh! goody! they are going to EXTEND the CFC program for another 2 months with $2,000,000,000 more cash!

More pigeons and artificially higher prices for the 95% of car buyers who don't qualify..... isn't government grand?

    Good luck

hello, does the $16500 include the taxes or not??

coz the cheapest OTD price ( INCLUDES taxes) i was getting is $18,000 for an LX

    please advise

Purchased a 2009 Honda civic LX 4 door Automatic with mud guards, pin stripes, wheel locks, trunk tray, and door edges for 17,600 OTD. Turned in the Cash for Clunker for additional 4,500 off.

    Location Palm Harbor Honda Florida
    Ask for Gary,

Also, make sure to bargain and inform them that you can get a lower interest rate on the financing. Got mine from 6% down to 4%. COuld not get the 2.9% bc got the 1000 dollar rebate instead.

Make sure to go to edmunds, and get multiple quotes. Dont be tempted to go into the dealerships after getting only a few quotes, bc they call multiple times to try to lure you. Deal with the dealers by e-mail. Less personal, and gives you more time to make an educated decision as to the best price by getting more quotes. Truecar.com is also very helpful

    Good luck

I got a price (through Costco) $18,511 (OTD $20,638) and then phoned another dealer $18,498 in Palo Alto without taxes, license. Should the prices be relatively the same in US or how regional are differences? Another dealer quoted $17,968 but does not take CFC. All of the other quotes were 19k+ and not too friendly......Any ideas on negotiating? Help!
