I also own a 2002 Freelander and it is right now at 95,000 miles. It is currently running OK however, there is a knocking noise in the engine.. Earlier in this forum I told everyone that I had a faulty fuel pump and the car stalled several times. The mechanic had to replace it 2 times in order to get it right. It runs fine, but I really need to get rid of it before I start crying again.... I still owe, owe owe, so that isn't an option right now....

Mileage on this car is lower than the 19/21 they advertise, I found it to be 16MPG on mine before it died.

That knocking noise was a symptom of the Head Gasket Failure on my 2003 Freelander, it knocked because of the oil and coolant emulsification (or gooked up as I called it, became a paste inside the engine). I know still owing money on the vehicle has you thinking you are better to keep paying and keeping the vehicle, but trust me! when the engine goes (& it definitely/absolutely/positively will), you are better off trying to trade it in as part of buying another vehicle before that happens.

My advice... TRADE IT IN AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, before you are stuck without a functioning vehicle and still have that payment. There is nothing worse than paying a payment for a vehicle that is dead.

Thanks very much for the info. :)

Sry...I'm a loyal L.R. fan...I will never trade it in for any thing, my family had seven different L.R. before, I'm not giving it up.

Is there anyone out there who had a gasket replaced and didnt end up needing a new motor? If not I wonder about how many miles I have on the new gasket. Im hoping to pay the car down some before trade in. I put 4000,00 down and 2300,00 in repairs. thats alot to loose. I have had the car less than a year. What do you think?
  • rgunnrgunn Member Posts: 17
Do you now how many complaints they have to have to issue a recall, or is it just based on their opinion of its road worthiness?
  • orca08orca08 Member Posts: 5
um...I don't know for sure how long you might have left on the entire engine, but I would guess trading it in and taking a loss now would be better than a 7-10K engine replacement which would just put you much further in the hole. Why take the chance?
  • sripleysripley Member Posts: 39
The Head Gasket Replacement issue is inevitably going to require a future repair/replacement of at minimum the gasket. The problem I found out is that the engine design is a piece of sh*t, the thermostat is located too close to the engine block, combined with the stress bolts around the Head Gasket eventually failing again. There is nothing to say that you cant get a year, 2 years or possibly more out of the vehicle with the gasket replacement, but it's like driving a depreciating ticking timebomb that only will invevitably fail. Whether its the Head Gasket Failure, Oil Pan/System Leak, or Transmission Failure, this vehicle has far too much downside to chance keeping it.

I dont think enough people have filed complaints to even get consideration by the NHTSA for a recall. We have a better chance of someone filing a class action lawsuit (under assumption this vehicle is a luxury vehicle and would have potentially some owners with deep pockets)---- against the automaker, but probably wont see more than a few hundred $ after waiting five or ten years for the matter to get settled. I hate this friggin vehicle and dont expect anything from Land Rover, I just hope by posting these comments can possibly alert/avoid other people from ending up with a dead vehicle & just a payment book to show for it.
  • trburtontrburton Member Posts: 22
Give it up. Sell it now before the auto sucks any more of your money. I am a 62 year old driver who meticulously maintained my Freelander. After the transmission was replaced at 48000 miles, engine noise developed & the valve train desintegrated at 52000 miles. I too expected more. My total Freelander experience cost me $55000. More than $1 per mile. A neighbor has 102000 miles on his Freelander, but he is on his third engine.
  • rgunnrgunn Member Posts: 17
Thanks so much for the responses. Im going to trade it in. I just feel bad about putting this car back out on the market for someone eles, but I cant afford to fix anymore problems. I wish everyone the best of luck with yours. If anyone is reading this and thinking about getting a Landrover PLEASE dont do it. Go buy a Toyota or a Honda.

I've been told that the 2002 Freelander doesn't have a "dip stick" to check transmission fluid...is this true...if so, when you lift the hood and if the battery is not in, you can see a hole just down below where the battery would be sitting...appears to be a place that transmission fluid has pumped out all over some of my wire connectors. Any help would be greatly appreciated...I was wondering if there was a repair manual for these ? ...I only paid $4000 for the L/R I hope I'll be able to come out a winner on this one.
  • rgunnrgunn Member Posts: 17
Iam not sure about the dip stick I paid big for a mechanic to flush the transmission, plugs, wires etc.... But I do know that you can get a repair mannual at ebay motors. If I were you I would get rid of it. Your $4000 could turn into $8000 in the blink of an eye.In less than a year I have put 2400 in mine and that is with a 1000 warrenty I bought. Good luck
  • sripleysripley Member Posts: 39
I dont believe there is a dip stick for this vehicle's transmission fluid, in fact they provide no easy accessibility to the transmission fluid assembly. $4000 as the purchase price might be okay, so long as you realize to get rid of it once repairs are needed, but drive it until it dies of one of the issues noted in this forum (typically head gasket/coolant mixing w/ oil, oil leak, transmission fluid leak, and fuel pump failure), that all of these repairs cost over $1000 and outweigh the value in repairing as more repairs will be needed inevitably anyway.

    Hello everyone,
I recently received a notice in my email about the class action moving forward with a new law firm and one with the information as to how to file a complaint with NSTA and have lost them due to computer troubles.
I have replaced my engine and... so
could the senders email me again with the information so I can contact the atty and NSTA.
    much appreciated.

I had a 2004 Freelander that started leaking coolant in March. It happened like clockwork (right around 50K). I was naive and thought that Land Rover would step up and do the right thing to fix the situation. Everyone admitted that the Freelander was junk -- my service specialist, the Land Rover North America customer service representative I spoke with, even the salesperson that I bought the car from. They all told me to trade the car in as soon as possible. But when it came down to help, there seemed very little that they were willing to do. They wouldn't even talk to me about a trade-in, unless it was for an LR3. This is the second Land Rover that died on me within 3 years of ownership (I had a 1999 Discovery II before this, which died within 2 years), so buying yet another piece of junk was out of the question. I haven't even seen a single Freelander on their lot (Bellevue Land Rover) since this all began.

Without boring you all with too much detail, it took two months of fighting with Land Rover and with Primus to finally get a new engine installed. It cost me about $1000 out of pocket, even though I had an extended warranty. (Primus is getting very good about finding things not to pay for).

A (reputable) local car dealer was cool enough to take a trade-in on my Freelander while it was still in the shop. I lost a lot of money in negative equity on this car. I made the investment hoping that I would have this car long-term. But I figured that it is better to spend the money to get out of it now rather than spend 7-10K on a new engine a few years from now when the second engine dies and I'm out of warranty.

My advice is to trade in this vehicle at the first sign of a coolant leak. Don't feel as though you're passing off the problem on to someone else -- you'd be surprised at the number of people who love these cars and are willing to put up with the trouble they cause.

Land Rover is very aware of this situation, and they are very prepared in how to fight customers that are facing this. They will not help you. Cut your losses and buy a more dependable car -- a Honda, Toyota, Volkswagen, or Subaru. I went with the Subaru Forester, and I'll agree with the Rav4 owner in a previous post, it was the best thing I ever did.

What disappoints me most is that Land Rover is not accountable to anyone for the cars that they manufacture. They supposedly discontinued the Disco and the Freelander in favor of the 'improved' LR3 and LR2. If you do a bit of research you'll find that these cars are money pits just as their predecessors.

If you've had a similar experience, write your state Attorney General, Land Rover North America, and your local Land Rover dealer. Let them know how disappointed you are with Land Rover products and service. :lemon:

WOW- I am still trying to adjust to the shock of the repair company telling my husband and I today that we need $10,000 to replace the engine on freelander with only 31,000 miles, we bought it used 6 months ago. This is the first piece of semi-good new as I feel a little comfort that I am not alone in this. My husband and I will be filing a complaint with landrover. I know the landsuit business is tricky, but I was was wondering about going to the media, I am sure there are a lot of other people with this problem.
  • rgunnrgunn Member Posts: 17
I wrote an email to CNBC about Landrover. I have not recieved a responce. Maybe if more people wrote to them they would think about it.

The media can't order a recall of all these vehicles or compensate any of us for our expenses. The media can ruin the company (which is now owned by some conglomerate in India) but that doesn't leave any of us any better off. We might feel vindicated somewhat but we'll still be stuck with these awful vehicles and a bad conscience if we sell or trade-in the vehicles so that some other poor slob ends up with our pain. A law firm will take months to evaluate whether our case is worth their resources to fight and, IF they deem the case worthwhile (the last one did NOT), they'll likely try to settle for something that falls far short of reimbursing us for our expenses but puts a whole lot of money in the firm's coffers. The best hope for us is the US Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Don't just vent and wring your hands (or worse yet, make your problem someone else's) - use your time and wits constructively and go to http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gove/ivoq/ to file a complaint. The NHTSA will respond to volume and seriousness of complaints. Explore their database at http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ where you'll find plenty of company among others who've had LandRover engine-overheat, transmission, and other failures. The engine-overheat, brake, and transmission failures that plague these LandRovers ARE safety problems and we need to make that case loudly, clearly, and in great numbers.

That so many will have to endure this vehicle's many problems. Just, please, avoid spending too much money on trying to fix the vehicle. If you have loans on the vehicle, try dragging the car financing company into the middle of the mess, as I doubt they want to reposess these piles of scrap metal when the engine overhears/head gasket failure.

They discontinued this vehicle and therefore there are no more of these faulty engines being produced by the Chinese manufacturer. Even if they were producing these engines, you would be better off buying a different car than wasting money on another one of this vehicle's engines with the same defect.

I agree that trying to get the media involved is futile, it ultimately doesnt get our vehicles fixed. Class Action Suit or NHTSA action might be our best options.

I am doing cart wheels. I just traded my 2005 Land Rover Free Lander in for a new BMW. I got pennies for this piece of junk THE CAR DEPRECIATED 75% in JUST 3 YEARS. . My BMW dealer took pity on me and still accepted my Land Rover FreeLander as trade even after the check engine light lit up when he inspected it today as the head gasket is inherently defective and is need of replacement for the second time. Don't buy a Freelander or any other LandRover Product. The head gasket went after just two years and 51K because it was 1K over the warranty LandRover refused to repair it.. The uninitiated may not know this but when a head gasket goes the ENTIRE ENGINE MUST BE REPLACED AT A COST OF OVER $6500. I fought with LandRover USA all the way up to the executive VP for weeks and gave up. They actually admitted that if they fixed all of the defective head gaskets and replaced the engines it would not solve the problem as this engine has a fatal irreparable design flaw. They also said that the company was financially insolvent and making good on their warranty claims would bankrupt them. I also owned and sold a 2001 Discovery that was falling apart. Everything breaks quickly in these cars. These are horrible vehicles sold by an unscrupulous company. They advertise non stop with constant "promotions" to entice the unknowing into buying the worst engineered and manufactured cars in the world. You will feel like a fool if you let their stupid test track, low interest finance and /or "special lease deals": trick you into purchasing the absolute worst vehicle in the world At least if the company stood behind its product you might tolerate the horrible quality and even worse engineering. I spent over $100,000 in 3 years purchasing two new Land Rovers only to be told I was 1K over my warranty and that I had to pay 6500$ for a new engine. They are noisy loud uncomfortable gas guzzlers. It is no wonder that the company has been bought and sold 3 times in 5 years. No one wants to own the company why in the world would anyone want to own one of their vehicles. Please contact me if there is a class action lawsuit. My LadnRover experience with the FreeLander Head Gasket defect makes me a poster child for compensatory as well as punative damages for this inherently defective product whose makers knew it was defective as these head gaskets have been failing since this model was introduced. I will throw a pary when this company goes the way of the Yugo. Bankrupcy is inevitable and is a fate better than the employees,, ownership and management deserve.

i was driving my 02 freelander with 50,440 miles on it yesterday till the check engine light came on. i took out my obd 2 diagnostic scanner and it showed me a po455 code which is an evap emission control system leak {major leak} when i read about it online. What should i do i really dont want to send thousands for fixing it i would like some advice please thanks alot for tips.
  • trburtontrburton Member Posts: 22
Sell the thing before it disintegrates as mine did at 52,000 miles. Believe me, if it is an emission problem you might get it repaired under warranty, depending on where you live. If you keep it, plan on having it towed to the landfill soon.

At the very least, take your Freelander to the dealer or repair shop and determine the extent of the problem along with an estimate for repairs. That will help you decide on the appropriate course of action.

Ill probably take it to the landrover dealership to tell me the extent of the problem and how severe it is. i made an appointment yesterday and they told me to come in by thursday to come in and let them check out whats the problem which would be about 45 minutes the guy told me on the phone when i spoke to him and told him what code on the obd it said the po455 and i would have to pay about $150 just for them to look at the problems on what has evolved into the car.

    landrover dealership RIPPPP OFFFFF!!!!!

One word of advice, that $100 plus labor "Diagnostic Fee" is total [non-permissible content removed]. Half the time they know what the problem is by the car's symptoms. For instance, the "Check Engine Soon" light comes on as a symptom of Head Gasket Failure, however you would first notice that your car loses antifreeze in a 2-4 week period without ever needing a diagnostic. Also for example, the 3 amigos (Hill Descent, Antilock, and Traction Control) lights come on when a wheel speed sensor is loose. And they should replace your Brake Light Switch, which was the ONLY recalled part thus far on this vehicle.

If you notice a symptom, you can usually figure out the problem without paying the $100 + labor diagnostic, alot of the problems have been widely posted on this & other auto forums.

Just dont spend too much money on this vehicle, it's money better spent on a different vehicle that you will inevitably have to get, especially as the SUV reaches the old age of 80,000 miles (the vehicle typically is dead by 100,000 miles or thereabouts, from one of these many described critical failures: oil leak, head gasket leak, transmission leak/failure, or something else).

I have an 03 F*&%lander, I sent all of my info to the
atty & I've yet to hear back from him, this was 3
weeks ago! I advise all of you to go to the FTC web
site voice your concerns on how unsafe this car is &
that it should be taken of the highways, streets, etc.
That is going to get us the help we need, seriously
does someone have to die before they will recognize
what a safety hazard this car is. I drove around for
months without brake lights, they had recalled the
recall on the brake switch. My back passenger window
dropped & shattered with my 2yr old niece in her car
seat right next to it. The cable to the motor that
sits inside the door wrapped itself around it the
motor & busted. That was $500 to replace. Not to
mention $6500.00 to replace the engine with a rebuilt
engine after 6 months of waiting for an engine only to
be told by LR that I was negligent & didn't follow the
maintenance rules. I have all of the paperwork to
prove it & they denied it & would not give me the car
back until I paid them in cash & then I got stuck with
a $4000.00 rental car bill. My credit sux now, I can't
buy a new car! Im stuck, but it does make me feel
better to know that Im not alone! So take an extra few
minutes to contact NHTSA & FTC, I wrote the atty
general in my state, they couldn't help but referred
me to the FTC!!! Power in numbers people!! We need
    HELP!!!

Im sorry, this might be a dumb ?, but what kind of attorney did you get for your case? I have never done anything like this before & I am waiting for the class action lawsuit, but I'm not sure thats going to happen. I need a back up plan just in case! My F4 code has came on numerous times & I take it in to LR & they don't have a clue 99.9% of the time. But, yes do yourself a favor & get rid of it while you still can. Ive left mine parked with the keys in it, with hopes of someone stealing it, but no such luck! :confuse:

I purchased a 2002 Landrover Freelander SE in 2004, it only had 40,000 miles on it so I thought I was getting a deal. I did all the research and at the time didn't see any issues. Boy was I scammed. It spent the first 3 months at the dealership and essentially had the enginer rebuilt as I was consistenly having a loss of power. Now at 75,000 miles I am having the problem again. My doors won't open with the keyless entry now, except for the driver's side door...and I can't unlock any doors from inside the vehicle. I have to manually open the door from the inside. The driver's side rear passenger window won't open. What next? This can't be happening. I called the dealership and asked if I was covered and the service guy started giving me crap saying I haven't been in for a service. Well they are located 60 miles away and only open till five...I have to work to support the vehicle so I have been keeping up the maintenance locally with a private mechanic. Something needs to be done!

I won a lawsuit against Land Rover in chancery court for $5080 engine repair costs.
LR will appeal & I need to prove the oil change interval was NOT 6000 miles as testified by the Dealership's service manager. The dealership lost the Passport to Service & I need the page or pages that show the reccommended oil change milage. Can anyone copy & e-mail this info to me at trburton@comcast.net.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
I suppose you could ask the judge to log on to the net and surf to the Edmunds Maintenance Guide.

It show the Land Rover recommended 12,000 oil change frequency and we get that info straight from the manufacturer.

If the dealer lost your Passport to Service booklet, why not ask the judge to put the burden on the dealer to find it or they lose their claim that 6,000 miles was the interval?

I would tell you to get rid of it, if you can, but not because of the brake light (which may be due to the recalled Brake Light Switch actually will cause that failure --- ironically the only thing recalled on this vehicle thus far), but I would rather get rid of it before you start experiencing the real major problems with this SUV, including head gasket failures at 40,000 miles+, oil & transmission fluid leaks, fuel pump failures, and that's just the first round.
  • darriagadarriaga Member Posts: 4

Has anyone heard of a head gasket failure without any warning lights coming on? We replaced a head gasket but the check engine light never came on. Maybe someone disconected it. What do you think?
  • sripleysripley Member Posts: 39
For my SUV, the Check Engine Soon Light would come on and off intermittantly, and was only when the engine itself was stalling or in reaction to too much coolant having mixed with the oil inside the engine. It is very possible that your Check Engine Soon never lit up from the problem (please note that the other lower Check Engine Light never comes on due to the Head Gasket Issue). On these SUV's, there is not a way of easilly disconnecting any sensors to reset or hide the issue, as a technician showed me the only way to reset the computer is by disconnecting the battery for about 15 minutes and then re-attaching, and even then if the fault persists such as this issue, the Check Engine Soon Light would reappear.

I would say it is very likely your engine fluids hadnt mixed to a level where the engine was sputtering to a stall, and that is really why that light was coming on (due to stall rather than any way of knowing there was a gasket failure other than physical observation of the coolant overflow level or coolant in the oil observation).

    Just my 2 cents.

Our 2003 Freelander engine just stopped while 200 miles from home over the 4th of July weekend. We have had all the some problems, coolant smell, heater core, unkown coolant leak.....

The Landrover dealer in Alaska went out of business but the certified mechanic indicated the only thing to to is replace the engine for $7,000+. We don't want to replace the engine when it appears that we might have the same problems.

Any suggestions on what can be done? Go to Landrover headquarters or Ford Headquarters with compliant? Sell the car as is? All I know is that I am without a car and still have a payment....(not with Ford Credit)...

ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED BECUASE IT WILL BE SNOWING SOON AND WE DON'T HAVE GREAT PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION.

If you spend $7000 you now have a running, until the transmission goes, auto worth $7000. If you sell it for $3000, you can buy a $10000 auto that works.
  • sripleysripley Member Posts: 39
My advice would be to contact your credit company and make them aware of the problem. You absolutely should not replace the engine, as the engines have been discontinued and the only remanufactured ones out there all will have the same defect as what you have now.

I would probably suggest buying a different car. If you owe a substantial amount on the 2003 Freelander, you may seriously want to think about whether to trade it and transfer the balance owed on the vehicle to the new vehicle you buy or whether you are better off buying the new vehicle and then let the 2003 Freelander just go behind on payments and let the credit company go and get it.

None of this is easy, it's as if you are trapped with vehicle and your credit is the most important thing you stand to lose. Just know that replacing the engine will only cost you money and another failure in the future, these engines are design flaws, just that simple. Its a shame no recall will ever happen to make us whole for the vehicles we have that no longer work.

You may want to speak to an attorney and see if they can offer a suggestion for possibly suing the dealership or any other option to breach the purchase agreement (if a lemon law or other had been violated with these vehicles).

I am in sort of the same boat here....I bought a 2004 Freelander 6 months ago and now it needs a new engine at 53000 miles! I am in shock! I thought Land Rover was a reputable car manufacturer and was happy to have gotten a "deal" although now I owe a ton of money on it and it needs almost $7000 in repairs! I don't even want it anymore after reading about all the problems! The dealer said "this is a common problem" A common problem for the engine to go at 53000 miles! IF this is a common problem shouldn't there have been a recall- this is a dangerous thing--and really without warning! I don't know what to do- no warranty as far as miles go but the 4 year mark is today! Just cannot afford to do this...HELP ME

Everyone please make sure your logging a complaint with NHTSA, this is how recalls happen! If we don't do it, we have no one to blame but ourselves.

Trust me I know what everyone is going through. I have had my FL since June 06 and have driven it maybe 6 months of the time. I pay my car payment and insurance every month on a truck I cant drive! Its either I screw my already screwed up credit even more or suck it up.

I have been dealing with this for 2 years! I cant afford to fix it if I continue to make the payments. It just sucks!

Please use the address above and use it in every post you write so that newcomers can also see it. This is our best bet at this point.

Please, please, please make sure we keep telling everyone about it!

I truly feel sorry for all of you that are going through this. I will keep this situation at the top of my prayer list!

Well, I am one of you guys. My Freelander has been sitting at Landrover since Dec. 21, 2007 without an engine. I have only been told that there are not any engines to be had. My car is fortunately under an extended warranty through Carmax, I have been reading all of these same problems and have begun to wonder if some of you that were willing to pay for or if you had a warranty ever got an engine? We have only been by LR to see our car twice since Dec., once in March (it just looked broken down) and then last weekend. When we drove by Landrover last weekend we found our car unlocked with the entire broken engine in the inside cab (on top of personal belonging that we had left thinking we would get our vehicle back soon) of our SUV along with a corroded battery in the floorboard. We were furious, we took pictures and went to Carmax since they are who we have the warranty with. They were also quite shocked at what they saw. Carmax made a visit to Landrover the next day and Landrover says that is how they store parts while they are waiting on parts. Probably not a good practice. Carmax contacted Landrover USA or whoever and is still waiting on a response. Landrover did change to a happier tune when they found out it was a customers personal warranty and not LR's. So this is why I am wondering if anyone has even received an engine, particularly one of the so called new ones. Like I said we are still waiting on LR to respond to Carmax. We just want to get rid of it, especially now that a dirty, oily, corroded engine and battery have been closed up in it throughout the summer heat. At this point we are counting on Carmax to do the right thing since it is there warranty that we bought and we all know that Landrover will not do the right thing.
