2001 Subaru Legacy which turns on but then the engine immediately shuts off.

It sounds possibly like a burned out resistor that is not in the circuit while the starter runs, but IS in the circuit when you release the starter switch. I have seen this happen to older Chrysler Corp cars when a ceramic pile resistor, typically found on the fire wall, would burn out.

    It was a broken ignition switch. The key would start the car perfectly, every time. However, because the ignition cylinder (what you insert the key in) was cracked, the key would open the contacts at the start position, but then, when released, would stop short of the contacts for the run position... Clear? You turn the key from 12N to 3pm to start the car and then let go. The key should rotate back to 1pm where the run contacts are. Because of the crack, the key would stop at 2pm, where there are no contacts. Took forever to find. Good luck.
