    those are fake photoshops.

I hope the body kit is optional. M3s do not have those ridiculous weight padders. It's just ballast.

I'm sure those pics are fake, but they may hint at the next Accord. Looks like they Camry-ized it.

the 6 was featured in this weeks Autoweek magazine. Only skimmed it, but seemed to be very favorable. Indicated sedan this August, hatch and wagon about a year later, figure this time of year if the demand is perceived.

they also said the interior looked cheap in some areas (mostly the metallic areas).

The Mazda6 has a preview drive in the May CAR magazine (UK). A couple quotes:

"Raining on BMW's parade? This is the car that should change your view of Mazda. Remarkably, the replacement for the feeble 626 is more than worthy of mention in the same breath as BMW and VW"...

"Even the likes of Mercedes would do well to cop a feel of the Mazda's dashboard"...

They praise the car's good looks, excellent handeling and the 2.3l 4cyl. impersonation of a V-6. The main critisim is for a lack of sound insulation.

They state that the 2.3l car will go 0-62 in 8.9 seconds. In the same issue, a Ford Mondeo ST220 with a tuned 3.0l Duratec V-6 sprints 0-60 in 6.8 seconds.

That the Mazda 6 isn't cheapened for the US market like Ford did with the Focus. I also hope that the build quality competes with the Japanese-made 6.
  • verozahlverozahl Member Posts: 574
The 626 and Capella are somewhat different cars, I have been told. The 626 in Europe, at least Finland, is a pseudo-sports sedan.

The Mazda will be called the '6' in Europe and America to replace the 626. It will replace the Capella with the even cooler name 'Atenza.'

New ideas for Mazda car names:
    Mazda 1
    Mazda 2
    Mazda 3
    Mazda 4
    etc.

I think my point is thus clear.

As for the difference in names...
it may or may not cover up performance.
The Nissan Silvia/240SX had different engines
as far as I know. The 626 in Europe was sport,
the 626 in Europe said 'overpriced Taurus'
    in its later years.

The difference in name may or may not cover up difference in build quality. In any case, I would rather have a European Focus or a European Mazda 6 than what we will see here.

Anyone know where the Mazda 6 will be built? Will they use the Flat Rock, Michigan, plant for it?
That's where Cougars and Mazdas are put together now... Cougar ends this year, though.
  • tiredofmanualtiredofmanual Member Posts: 338
Will be built in the Flat Rock, Michigan plant.

There's a good article on the 6 at

    http://www.autoweek.com

Among other things, it says we will get the sedan in August, with the hatch and wagon coming a year later.
  • bac111bac111 Member Posts: 9
The Autoweek author is sad we in the US don't get the clear boy racer clear tail lights. Well, thank goodness we don't. It is such a passing fad. Ten years from now you'll be able to pick out a 2000-2002 car from those clear tail light treatments. And you'll think it is just as cool as the vinyl roof on a '75 Monte Carlo.
  • nwngnwng Member Posts: 663
what??? no clear lens. Mazda needs to think about why people would buy the 6: brand loyalty -no, previous 626 owners - no, folks who wants to be in a camry because everyone else is - no, people who just want a little more excitement when ferrying their family - yes. The clear lens invoke excitement and yep, fit the message with those annoying "zoom zoom" ads. Whereas the red lens will say "Please cross shop me because I am as dull as a camry".

perhaps it should an available option?
  • bac111bac111 Member Posts: 9
then someone better tell the Germans to get on the stick, because I can think of no Audis or BMWs with clear tail lights.

    They're falling behind.
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
Are you saying that you wouldn't buy a 6 because it doesn't have clear tailights? I'm sure you could just buy them from Mazda if you really wanted those nasty things.
  • ambullambull Member Posts: 255
I'm not a big fan a clear tail lights, but the ones on the 6 looked pretty good. I agree they should be an option - some people love 'em and some hate 'em.
I was suprised that the sedan had the following feature: "Flick one lever and the cargo floor gets flat and vast as the rear seatbacks drop forward. Seats up, the 6 sedan already provides more cargo room than anything else in the class at 17.7 cubic feet." I thought the hatch and wagons got the Karakuri treatment, but I hadn't previously seen that the sedan gets it too. Cool!

    BMW 3 Series Compact
Another link to BMW 3 Series Compact

However, there are currently NO BMWs sold in the States that have clear taillights. :) IMO, Some cars look good with the clear taillights but MOST of the cars with aftermarket clear taillight add-ons are not in that category.
  • maltbmaltb Member Posts: 3,572
Every time I see an IS300 I feel bad that the owner paid good money for a car that looks like a boy racer Civic. The 6 has a nicer tail so maybe there will be more distinction.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Autoweek's article was generally positive. It didn't really say anything to turn me away from the 6.

I'm sure someone will import and sell those taillights. I kind of like 'em, but I wouldn't be willing to pay extra for them.

  • bac111bac111 Member Posts: 9
Never had seen that before. When the mid-90s BMW hatch was imported to the U.S. of A., it didn't have the clear tail lights. I see now that it does. Holy cow. Learn something everyday.

Yes, I hate clear tail lights. Won't buy the 6 if it has them. Won't buy the Altima for the same reason, which otherwise is a very good, uh Passat, looking car. Anyway, if the Wagon or Hatchback 6 makes it to the U.S. without those crazy tail lights, Mazda has a sale.
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
If the clears are going to be standard on 6s everywhere besides the US, you won't have to go aftermarket to get them. Mazda will have them, and they will be higher quality than the chintzy crap that they sell in mags anyway.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Altima got poor side crash test scores, 3/4 stars. The 6 had better do much better.

  • nwngnwng Member Posts: 663
that would be nice, as a poster mentioned above, you don't have to get the crappy ones found in ebay. I think the shape of the clear tail lights in the 6 complement the front headlights really well. You don't see that in a lot of cars.
  • nwngnwng Member Posts: 663
are usually the most conservative(hint: our best selling car is the camry). If you take a look at similar offerings elsewhere, the cars usually look sharper in terms of trims, grille, front & rear lights treatment. For example, take a look at the european focus, ours look really homely when you compare them side by side.
  • verozahlverozahl Member Posts: 574
Go to the Mazda-Europe websites. The 626 in Europe is a sports sedan. The American-market 626 is a fancy Taurus. It's as boring as a Sable, although I prefer Mazda interiors.
The 6 should have clear taillights as a no-cost or minor cost option or accessory.

'6' is not enough of a name. I like the Japan-market name 'Atenza.' You'll be sitting next to some guy in a bar someday... "I have a 6" and he'll say "that's BMW's nicest coupe" and you'll have to get into a BMW/Mazda screaming match. It's bad enough already with the Lincoln/Lexus LSes.
  • ickes_mobileickes_mobile Member Posts: 675
The US tail lights aren't as boring as you may think. I saw the "6" at the Chicago and Minneapolis auto shows. I'd call the US tail lights a cross between solid red/amber/white lenses and the chrome ones seen in the various photos. If I remember right, the US lights still have the smaller chrome surround fixtures within the surround, but with a red background instead of chrome. I don't know if that make any sense!

Kind of strange... The photo car in CAR magazine and the Auto Week articals are both silver 4-doors and almost look like the same car. However, they have slightly different licence plates: CAR= LEV-ME-602 and AutoWeek= LEV-ME-684.
  • nwngnwng Member Posts: 663
1)the first batch of paint mazda produced for the 6 is silver
    2) since the 6 is not officially on sale yet, those are temporary plates issued to manufacturers, hence the proximity of the numbers
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
When the arrival date for the sedan again? We're probably going to trade our 626 in sooner than we thought. We've had our 5th repair in the last year or so (fuel system, axle boot, wheel hub/bearing, oxygen sensor, and muffler), and frankly it's time to sell.

You're not selling it because of the repairs are you? Those repairs seem like normal maintenance depending on the mileage of you car.

juice: the Autoweek article said the 6 sedan arrives in August, but the Mazda website is still saying early 2003, so who knows for sure?
  • porknbeansporknbeans Member Posts: 465
I have to think that Mazda wants to get the 6 out before the new Accord arrives. Why try and release a new car in the inevitable flood of reviews and accolades that will follow the introduction of the Accord. August has to be closer to the truth.

Mazda will claim a launch date that gives them time to have inventory at dealers. Usually cars show up at dealers before they flip the switch on TV commercials. There's not much use in advertising a product that is in limited supply. I would think that August is too optimistic and 2003 is a bit too conservative. Think November.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Our 626 just feels like it's reaching the point where everything is about to go on it. The muffler guy said the other CV boot was starting to dry rot. He also said other parts of the exhaust would only last so long. The engine feels like it could use another fuel injection system service.

More importantly, the wife is 6 months pregnant with our 2nd, so she doesn't want to drive around in an older car that she no longer feels comfortable with.

Side note: never argue with a pregnant woman. If you are wrong, you're wrong. If you're right, you're a jerk! ;-)

It's odd, the car was perfectly reliable for the first 5 years, but since then it's been awful. I had an Escort for the same amount of time, but with 33k more miles and it only needed major service twice, and cost us less than half overall.

Well, let's all hope Mazda has improved the longevity of the new 6 as much as they have the looks and performance!
Juice, I'm suprised your wife doesn't want a van instead of the 6!

Well, I let her drive an MPV, it just didn't make her heart pump. Oh well.

A co-worker of mine has a 1996 626 4 automatic, and it's got like 145K on it now. He said everything is about to go on it right about now, but they are just holding onto it to save money for a little bit. His engine burns oil alot, the tranny went twice, and one more thing major went on it (can't remember now).
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
145k is great, I wish we could keep ours that long. Not with a pregnant wife, though.

That you basically overpaid for most of your major repairs if I remember your posts at the time correctly.

I had some fairly heavy repairs on my 1991, last year, then it tamed down a lot and works very well.

I just put on some KYB shocks and really like the difference in the ride.
  • porknbeansporknbeans Member Posts: 465
Be glad she isn't having hot flashes. With my first my wife had our place so cold you could have hung beef.

Boy do I agree with your argument statement, mine just hasn't stopped. :)

Mazda calls it the '6' so that people can say "I have a Mazda" and then they can increase the brand's awareness.

I bet the average buyer has no idea who actaully makes a Miata. "Honda right?" duh
  • verozahlverozahl Member Posts: 574
I understand the rationale to call it the 'Mazda 6'. I just DON'T LIKE the rationale, though! I explained it to a Japanese friend this morning. He thinks it's a stupid idea. He likes the name 'Atenza.' He also likes the name of the Honda Odyssey in Japan, though. The 'Honda LaGreat,' it is called.

will there be a dvd navigation option? saw the autoweek article and they didnt mention it.
  • verozahlverozahl Member Posts: 574
Do you really need a DVD navigator?
  • subzero206subzero206 Member Posts: 111
no but i would like to have the option of choosing it if i want it. this car is going against camry and accord right? camry(dont like exterior) offers it and im sure the new accord(havent seen yet) will too.
  • tomcat630tomcat630 Member Posts: 854
Atenza is too much like Altima and Stanza. It also sounds like something Kia would sell.
  • carspy01carspy01 Member Posts: 137
    To ickes_mobile & nwng:
The plates are, in fact, no temporary ones, but official German license plates. Mazda, like other producers/manufacturers buy "their" distinctive plates. Explanation:
LEV = abbreviation for Leverkusen, a city near to Cologne where the German Mazda Motors is registered
ME = two letter combination standard in Germany. For Mazda the internal "bridge" is Mazda Europe
... = digit combination, possibilities from 1 to 4 digits
    I. e. two different cars, two different registrations.
  • maltbmaltb Member Posts: 3,572
Now there's a useful feller to have around.
