the IA/MN state line yesterday diesel fuel was exactly $1 more per gallon than unleaded 89 octane (10% ethanol).

$2.39 regular vs. $3.29 for diesel!

This price difference sure takes the cost savings out of running a diesel.

    The sign says:

    87 $2.29
    89 $2.39
    92 $2.59

In potomac, the Shell was $2.79 for regular, oddly the Exxon that shares a building with it is still $2.89. They'be been slower to drop prices.

Diesel is also $3.29 in Berkeley, CA. In the days right after Katrina hit, it was up to $3.50.

We buy biodiesel from a local collective for $3.30 -- if the majors were producing it in bulk, they'd be able to way undercut $3.30.
  • bottgersbottgers Member Posts: 2,030
It's basically garbage fuel which requires almost no refining, so what gives?
  • PF_FlyerPF_Flyer Member Posts: 9,372
This is just a guess... when the hurricanes made a mess of some refineries, didn't they switch production over from other petroleum products to help reduce the effect of gas shortages? And wouldn't that mean that the other products, like diesel, would experience shortages due to that switch? At least until everything got back up and running.

    Lowest prices I've seen are:

    Central VA - 87 is $2.399

Front Royal VA (farther north) - 87 is $2.279

In south suburbs of Pittsburgh, PA - 87 is $2.289
  • KCRamKCRam Member Posts: 3,516
Diesel is the same raw fuel as home heating oil. Now that it's officially heating season, refineries usually produce more HHO and less diesel this time of year. In addition, diesel demand has increased more than gasoline, due partly to an increase in diesel automobiles, and the rest from the improved economy (more trucks and cargo trains running). Less diesel produced and more demand for it equals higher diesel pump price.

The Sunoco at Rhawn and Verree in NE Philly has Regular at $2.55. Ultra is $2.87.
Lowest seen is $2.39 for Regular at the Shell on Red Lion and Roosevelt Blvd.
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 25,677
actually lucked out yesterday and found 87 octane for a seductive $2.459 per gallon!
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Down another 2 cents in Potomac to $2.77.

Down another 7 cents in Georgetown, DC, to $2.83.

I expect more price drops in DC because it's usually cheaper than in Potomac.

I think the Citgo is still around $2.699 for '87 and the Shell is $2.799. I'm glad I just happened to be up in Millersville yesterday! Even though I was still around a half-tank, I filled up.
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
Andre, was that Millersville, PA? My brother went to school at the university.
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 25,677
no, Millersville, Maryland, near Glen Burnie off I-97. I gotta remember that sometimes more than one town might have the same name!

BTW, the Shell on my way to work is now down to $2.6999/$2.7999/$2.899. I also noticed that my AAA Visa, which used to give me a 5% rebate on gas purchases, is now cutting back to 3%
  • KCRamKCRam Member Posts: 3,516
...that these guys are subsidizing diesel prices by keeping gasoline a few cents higher than the norm.

My usual Sunoco truck stop, Palisades Park NJ

    87 - $2.579
    89 - $2.679
    93 - $2.759
    94 - $2.799
    diesel - $2.689

Needless to say I was not alone at the diesel pumps, quite a few semis were there topping off. Most stations of this size in the area have 10 gas pumps and 2 diesel... this station is 6 and 6.

It was crazy here that day. Lines at every gas station. I can only hope that our Governor follows through with his promise to prosecute the gas gougers.

...at Rhawn and Verree in NE Philly has Regular at $2.52 - down 3 cents. Ultra is $2.79.
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 25,677
the local Shell dropped again, down to $2.629 for 87 octane. I didn't catch the other two prices, but most likely they were $2.729 and $2.829.

At Sheetz, 87 is $2.399. Diesel is 50 cents higher, at $2.899.

Sunoco at Rhawn and Verree in NE Philly has Regular down 2 cents to $2.50. The other grades: 89 is $2.60, 93 is $2.70, Ultra is $2.78.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
It's worse here, $2.69 for gas and $3.35 for diesel. Ouch. I think it's because of the demand for heating oil, competing with demand for diesel.

I do think it's seasonal, though. Usually, around here, diesel is about 20 cents more per gallon.

it's getting downright CHEAP around here! This evening after work I went to the repair shop to drop off my truck and pick up my NYer. Found a gas station in Millersville, MD, that had gas for $2.599/$2.799/$2.899, so I filled up with 89 octane. Then I dropped off the truck, and on the way home, in Gambrills, MD, I found an even CHEAPER station! Citgo on the median of Route 3, where it was $2.319/$2.419/$2.519! So I filled up the NYer, again with 89 octane.

It's funny how a year ago, we would've been bitching about these prices, but now it's like, LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL!! Maybe there is a Charger Hemi in my future, after all :shades:

We are down to $2.47 here in Chicago ... about half way to my original prediction that gas prices would be below $2 by April 2006.

A barrell of oil below $60 looks fairly likely by the end of the year.
  • yrbenderyrbender Member Posts: 25
I just got lucky and filled up at $3.19/gallon is it a supply demand thing for diesel? Regular gas was 2.49. I'm trying to find a way to take my 4 wheeler to work.
  • moparbadmoparbad Member Posts: 3,870
$2.65 diesel today, nice change from the $3.19 as recent as Sunday.
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
Regular is now $2.39 at the Sunoco at Rhawn and Verree in NE Philly. It dropped 11 cents in one day! It's almost affordable!
  • jefferygjefferyg Member Posts: 418
Here in Southwest Mississippi our prices fell to $2.39 this morning with a ten cent spread between grades. That's down twenty cents from less than two weeks ago. I can't believe how much some of you were paying around the Atlanta area a few weeks ago. We live in an area that was directly impacted by Katrina and we never got above $3.09 for regular unleaded.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
From 2.79 to 2.63 just like that, in Georgetown, DC.

In central VA, Citgo, Exxon, and Sheetz are all $2.299 for 87 with the usual 10-cent spread for the higher grades. Sheetz's diesel is still stuck at $2.899. So what was supposed to be the advantage for buying a diesel?
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
Here's an artical that states that generic and brand-name gasoline are the same:

    http://dailynews.att.net/cgi-bin/news?e=pri&dt=051029&cat=frontpage&st=frontpagegas_price0- 51029&src=abc

I dunno. Some of those places are probably selling a 50/50 mixture of kerosene and water with rocks, sticks, and bugs in it!
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 57,136
    2.69/2.79/2.89

    We're now a mere 16 cents higher than pre-Katrina.
  • PF_FlyerPF_Flyer Member Posts: 9,372
Had to go out of town for the whole day yesterday, and when I left at 6:30 in the morning, the price was $2.27.

On my return at 9:30PM it was at $2.17

Haven't been out yet today :P
  • anonymouspostsanonymousposts Member Posts: 3,802
    $2.36 for 87 octane.
  • 210delray210delray Member Posts: 4,721
Citgo, Exxon, and Sheetz 87 - $2.199 with 10-cent spreads for the higher grades.

So who said it wouldn't go down as fast as it went up? (Not that I'm ditching my 4-cylinder vehicles or anything.)
  • faroutfarout Member Posts: 1,609
Most stations as of Oct 30, have Diesel for as high as $3.399 to a low of $2.989, Unleaded 87 oct is $2.269 most everywhere. Why such a wide price range in Diesel is beyond me. Anyone have a clue?
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
Regular is now $2.37 at the Sunoco at Rhawn and Verree. Ultra is down to $2.65. Lowest price seen is $2.29 for Regular at the Shell on Roosevelt Blvd. and Red Lion in NE Philly.

All weekend, I was in Kansas City, MO/KS. In KCMO, the best prices were $2.069 in many stations AWAY from the interstate. What was wierd was premium was still around $2.79.

$2.460 in the Chicagoland suburbs, $2.679 around Chicago-Midway airport.
