    So...should we round up or truncate? To use your example, do we say $2.20 or $2.19?

    Delray, if I had a say, I would just not type the .009 (tenths) and just leave as $2.19, instead of $2.199.

    This is just a suggestion and would make it easier to read.

    .009 is nine thousandths, this is nine-tenths (.9). Sorry, Mark, couldn't resist ;)

    I was almost giddy to pay $2.399 for 87 octane today in beautiful Bannockburn, IL (about 25 miles north of Chicago), where I've been working a bit lately. Price is about 20 cents cheaper than the city.

    Ghulet.... you are right about the .009! :blush: But you know, I have never heard the term nine thousandths when referring to gas prices... I have always heard people say "nine tenths".

    Still don't see any sense in using it as everyone here types in a "9". Never see an eight or any other number! :P

    I think of cents also, so I use 9/10ths (of a penny).

    Though usually I just drop it altogether.

    The 9/10 is ALWAYS there. i'm leaning to the marketing ploy angle. just like buying something that costs $19.99 makes it UNDER $20 :P

    ...that was taken in Hazleton, PA of two filling stations having a "gas war." One station posted a sign for an even 18 cents a gallon with a little blurb underneath, "This Sign has no Sneaky Little '9'!"

    Extremely rare for diesel to be lower than premium unleaded in January around here...

    is the "third" digit of .009 really necessary? We all know that they are there and they never change.... is it really a digit we have to post?

    I think you folks are going to wear out the "9" key! :P

    .9 refers to nine-tenths of a cent, which is nine-thousandths of a dollar, right? So we're both correct (expressed like $2.009), I guess the gas stations still 'write it' as if it's two-hundred point nine cents.

    Gas prices are status quo, been filling up in the burbs when I can as a result (S.O.'s Jeep Wrangler uses about $8 in gas a day on my 50 mile round trip; so that's at just about 15 mpg on that commute, most of which is interstate. Of course, it's interstate that's travelling 15 mph half the way there and most of the way back, so not surprising, I guess :(

    Actually, I have seen one station that had 8/10ths rather than 9/10ths, and I saw another that left the 10ths off all together.

    BTW, Here in McComb, MS after going down a penny on Tuesday from 2.24 AND 9/10ths on Monday to 2.23 on Tuesday, our prices went up to 2.30, 2.40, and 2.50 today. I knew I should have topped off yesterday. :mad:

    You know what really bothers me about all this gas price hike is not just having to pay the higher price, but also how it makes me sound just like my Dad, "You know, when I was a kid, you could take a $20 bill and fill your tank and still have money to go to McDonald's yada yada yada..."

    I left 2 weeks ago and the price at my station in San Diego was $2.11. Returned and it was $2.34. ULSD Diesel stayed the same at $2.65.

    DC is still $2.51, but Potomac was down to $2.49 last night. Weird how they vary.

    While I bristle at this because I can get diesel ~40 cents cheaper near work, this happens to be Exxon "Diesel Extra" with additional additives, and I actually get slightly better mileage and smoother starts using it. Not worth $12 extra per tank, though.

    Was $2.04 for 87 when I got back from my 3-week cross-country trip just before New Years.

    Now the lowest I can find is $2.17 at Hess, East Coast, Kangaroo, and no-name.

    Looks like we hit the low point during our trip, although prices varied considerably from $2.05 to $2.47 depending on where we were.

    We dropped back down to $2.45 here in State College, PA on Friday. The wife reports that Altoona has been at $2.39

    ...I filled the tank of my 2002 Cadillac Seville STS on Saturday. Ultra was $2.69 and as I was filling the car, the attendant came out with the signs for on top of the pump raised by 2 cents across the board! I guess I got there just in time.

    I filled my truck up with 89 at the local Citco, and I think it was $2.459 per gallon. IIRC 93 was $2.539 and 87 was $2.359.

    Central VA, actually dropped at Sheetz outside of town here, by 7 cents to $2.19 for 87. Sheetz sets the pace in this particular location.

    In town, Hess is still holding at $2.17.

    My Costco has stayed at $2.34 for over a week now.

    Just as a reminder. In today's dollars we are still far behind 1980-81. Oil peaked out at $86.85 January of 1981.

    I'm pretty much leaving the Seville with her appetite for Ultra at home these days. My '88 Park Ave with its 3.8 V-6 is happy on rotgut.

    Potomac Exxon/Shell was still $2.49.

    The Chevron at Cabin John was $2.47.

    Georgetown Exxon is way up, $2.62 today. $2.82 for premium!

    yesterday it looks like prices went up around 3-4 cents, across the board. Local Shell coming in was up to around $2.499/2.599/2.699.

    2.49+ in central ct. doesn't hurt as much since i am driving a loaner, thus avoiding mileage based depreciation. ;)

    I heard somewhere that only 1/5 of our oil imports come from the Middle East. The rest comes from Canada, Mexico, Nigeria, and Venezuela.

    Paid $2.19/regular today and it was refreshing. As soon as spring usage kicks in, I bet $2.50 + will rear it's ugly head again. :mad:
