The primary variable factors in a lease are:
1.) Vehicle Sales Price: In your instance, you know the Invoice Price ($35,785), you know the destination fee ($570), you are aware of the manufacturer to dealer incentive ($1,500) that you can get the dealer to pass onto you, and you should be aware of the "holdback" amount, which is an additional 2-3% of the MSRP ($800-$1,200) that the manufacturer will pay to the dealer upon the dealer getting that vehicle off of his lot and out of inventory. A low lease payment starts with a well negotiated sales price.
2.) Vehicle Residual Percentage: You state that in your deal it is 63% for a 36 month lease at 15,000 per year. That sounds like a very generous item on behalf of the dealer. I was under the impression that Acura MDX was at about 55% residual on a similar deal structure. Acura's book has it at 53%. [Obviously, the higher the residual percentage, the lower amount of depreciation you are paying for and therefore the lower your monthly payment.] In your case, Acura is stating that upon lease termination, the Acura MDX will have a market value of 63% of the original MSRP. Therefore, Acura will be asking you as the lessee to pay for 37% of the MSRP as the depreciation of the vehicle. Take MSRP, multiply by 37% and then divide by the length of the lease (36 months) to get the depreciation portion of your lease payment.
3.) Money Factor: Next to price, this may be the most subjective variable in the equation. Money Factor is used to calculate the portion of your monthly payment that is the financing portion or the "carry cost" for the unused portion of the vehicle's value over the life of the lease. As a simple rule of thumb, you may simply multiply the Money Factor by twenty four (24) in order to convert the Money Factor into a simple interest rate that we all understand. As a reasonable range; I would be suprised if your interest rate was less than 4.5% and it really should not be greater than 6.25%.
4.) Fees and Costs: Each dealer is different on how much horse trading or negotiating they will do on Acquisition Fees, Lease Administration Fees, Document Fees, Processing Fees, Security Deposits, etc. Bottom Line: try to minimize each.
MDXMEW, based upon what you have told me to date about vehicle costs, trade ins, taxes, etc. I would say that an aggressively priced lease for you would be in the $430 to $450 per month range.
Also Extended Warranty, anyone have experience with that?
You should budget for maintenance and repair of your vehicle for as long as you own it. Very few things you spend on keeping a car on the road is going to be covered by (extended) warranty.
Everyone, feel free to advice...

Acura MDX (Black/Pearl White)
Saddle Interior
Touring, Navigation and DVD Entertainment Packages
Price: $40,000 (including tax, tag and title. "Out of the Door Price")
Is this an unfair offer? I have been turned down by one dealership so far, and although I want a good deal, I don't want to be unfair in my proposals. I think the MDX is a great value at that price point. When you start moving north of this number, other luxury SUV's start giving the MDX some pretty stiff competition (BMW X5, Volvo SUV, the new Landrover, etc.), but if I can can get the MDX at this price, I think I will have made a good purchase. Thoughts?
You can do better. I purchased mine for $38,500 Out the Door, including everything. I had nav and dvd on mine. This was in the Northern VA area, and I had 2 dealers accepting that price. I basically sent several dealers my email, stating I wanted the MDX in a specific color, with NAV and DVD, and was willing to pay $38500, including tax, title, etc. If they agree, I would pick it up over the weekend. One dealer agreed, and another then matched that price.
Let me know how it turns out.
MDX Touring plus NAV (Sage w/Graphite Interior)
Price: $37,000
Title, doc, reg: $263.75
Tax: $1,235.00 (note - tax rate in MA is 5%, this is net of $12,300 for my trade)
Total: $38,498.75
Not the best deal out there, but pretty good. Thanks again.
I've been babying the MDX, but there's so much technology in the thing, I would have to study the manual for sometime now. Don't you miss the days when you get into a brand new car you already knew everything there is to know?
I immediately called another dealership and explained everything (including the omission of things like the 2.% financing option and the $1500 dealer incentive. I made it clear that I was tired of games and was willing to deal with someone ready to give me a straight deal. He said he'd call me back tomorrow, so I'll let you know how it goes on both fronts.
I think information is power and may really be able to assist some on the board by keeping a real record of our experiences. This is the most expensive car I have ever purchased so it is a big deal for me. Any help is definitely appreciated.
I don't know anyone at the delearship. Some one else in the past posted on this forum about the delear and the price they bought it for and hence I called the same delear and mentioned the price and bargained a little bit to get to this price. Thanks again to this forum in helping me get my MDX at a good price.
2005 Black/Saddle leather MDX with Touring, Nav, DVD and Protection Packages
$41,900 out of the door (including 5% tax, tags and title)
I will also get the 2.9% financing assuming I qualify (I know they may use this to get over on me so I'll get confirmation before going in for the purchase).
That gives me a fully loaded version for somewhere in the 38,900 range before the TTL.
Is that good?
Sounds like you got a good deal. I live in Fairfax too. My son totaled my '02 MDX last May and thank God for the great safety features he was unscathed and partied the same night in his brother's RSX.
I'm shopping to replace my MDX this month. Which dealer did you get yours from? Radley or Pohanka.
Cheers,
jcwingchun
If you don't mind, what's the cost breakdown on the $38,500?
jcwingchun
Thanks
Based on your posts and skigreat's, I called Ramsey Monday afternoon after I had a not so thrilling experience at Springfield. (If you don't have the car I want and can't give it to me for the price I want fine. Don't tell me that I have to take delivery of the car by Tuesday (not true) but is how they were trying to convince me to take the color combo I was not interested in and waste more time then I had to spend.)
Anyway, on the way from that dealership to a bbq, I spoke to the asst mgr you suggested and he agreed to a navi for just over what skigreat paid (+92). I probably could have gotten him to drop, but since I was willing to pay $300 more to Springfield (which they never got to) I figured if he saved me anymore headache it was worth it (and it's all of $2 and change a month). He took no deposit just some info and I faxed my license and insurance card over yesterday morning.
Picked it up last night without a problem. PAINLESS! I turned down the LoJack and Extended Warranty although I may rethink the latter and buy in the near future. We'll see!
Skigreat and Fun...Thanks for all your advice. Again, Fun, good luck with the car!
PS. I'd like to say I'm enjoying the new MDX, but I'm driving my 9 year old Maxima that needs new brakes  while the wife and our newborn are tooling around in the new mobile listening to XM :shades: . ARGH! I can't wait for the AWD TL!!! ('07???)
One thing is, looks like the offer I got was "fair" but not the best. Oh well, everyone have to make a living right? I guess that's what I have to tell myself, otherwise I will be upset.. hahahaha...
However in general standard mats are the usual rug type of mats. If you take all season floor mats as an option, then they will leave the standard set in the car. My suggestion first ask what is there in the car that you are going to pick from stock. Many times there are various options that you care or don't care and they are already there.
Dealer would be willing to cut margins on options that are already there... however if you declare your needed option list ahead of time then they will quote full price for that ...
Hope that helps...
Good luck.
A friend of mine is also from Bridgewater and, like you, she loves to ski. In fact, she is a ski instructor. The last I heard is that she is moving to Colorado -- the state for skiers. You wouldn't happen to know her, do you?
I'm also shopping for an MDX and this board provides great info. With the $1,500 incentive (assuming it is being extended beyond 7/5), it makes the MDX a valued purchase. Thanks for your invaluable contribution to the board, as quite a few posters have benefited from you info and advice.
Thanks
I got my MDX a couple of weeks ago, and so far am averaging 12-13 miles per gallon. Will this improve with more use of the car? I've only put 200 miles on the car, and this is my first tank of gas with it. What are other's experiences?
Thanks.
