Silverado 1500 HD versus Silverado 2500

How do they differ? I've a friend who just purchased the 1500 HD and he's telling me it's the same truck as the 2500. It doesn't make sense to me. Why would Chevy build the same truck under two different model numbers? Do they sit on the same frame? How about the 2500 HD?
Does it sit on the same frame as the 2500 or does it sit on the 3500 frame?

    The 1500HD is 8600 GVWR, just like the 2500 and shares part of the frame. The 2500HD is 9200 GVWR, said to share part of the 3500 frame.

    Someone can correct me, but I don't think the 2500 Silverado/Sierra (1999 and up) was offered in a crew cab until the HD series (2001 and up), but the CK series was.

    When I purchased my 1995 K2500 I thought I was getting a true 3/4 ton. Not the case. It was a want to be 3/4 ton. It was nothing more than a 1500 with an extra leafspring. The frame, rear diff., driveline, and brake size were no different on the 2500 versus the 1500. I later found out I should have purchased the 2500 heavy duty to get the true 3/4 ton.
    Is Chevy doing the same thing today with the new Silverado 2500? Is it nothing more than a 1500 with an extra leafspring? Is the Silverado 2500HD the true 3/4 ton?

    No. The 2500 is a different class (8600 GVWR versus 6400 GVWR) for more reasons than just a leaf. Heavy duty axles, 4L80E heavy duty truck transmission versus 4L60E on 1500), stronger frame, brakes etc, stronger engine choices, 6.0L standard versus 4.8L.

    The 2500 was (is) a true 3/4 ton, but if the introduction of 2500HD in 2001 changed your definition of "true 3/4 ton" by upping the GVWR from 8600 to 9200, that's for you to decide.

    The 1500HD is possibly not a true 3/4 ton, even though it's built on the true 3/4 components because it sacrifices payload to accommodate the full crew cabin. It does have the 8600 GVWR however.

    The 1500 has 6 ,the 2500(ld) has 6 ,the 2500HD has 8 ,1500HD ? If it has 6 the brakes are probably closer to those in the 1500.Rember how bama went on and on about the weak brakes in the 1500HD? I never read the article he cited ,but appearantly the 1500HD takes a long ways to stop.It seems to me that a heavy truck like the crewcab 1500 should have HD brakes but I'll bet it don't.

    1500HD, 2500LD both have 8 lug wheels, just like the 2500HD.

    The 1500HD is the old (1999-2001) 3/4ton chevy. They were in the new body stle before the HD 3/4 and 1 ton trucks came out. They have beefier axles than the 1/2 tons giving them a higher GVWR, but they keep the same 1/2 ton frame with some extra leaf springs and braces in the frame.

    Look at 'em again. The box section frame rail in back is at least 2 inches taller on the 2500LD than on the 1500. (1999-2001)

    Sorry,I think I coined the LD moniker.There's only the 2500 and 2500HD and I'm not sure they're still making the 2500.

    Are both the same frame for the same model (long box & cab size), but the 3500 has an extra leaf or two. The 3500 now only comes in a dualie rear so the 2500HD is the replacement for the old 3500 SRW.

    Chevrolet has mixed up the traditional definitions. Here is what I was told in one of the other forums:

    1500 HD is a real 3/4 ton, but only available in Crew Cab

    2500 is a real 3/4 ton, but only available in Reg and Ext cab models

    2500 HD is really a 1 ton with single rear wheels

    3500 is 1 ton with dual rear wheels

    Hmm; for the price I'd get a 3/4 ton;
    The sad part of a 1500 HD is it's only offered in short box, albeit it's a 6' vs 4' as the competitors are.

    the S'Crew is more like 5 1/2 ft. And I'd take that in GM 1/2 ton CC.
    Well that sucks........You'd think Edmunds would include the length of the bed in the specs for a vehicle like this. At least back when they first came out. But noooooooo! I'm pretty sure it's in the 5 to 5 1/2 ft. range.

    The Ford S'Crew bed is 67.2" at floor and 65.5 at top according to Ford.com. I'd say your 5 1/2 ft. estimate is pretty close!

    like that wouldn't happen........but as I see it the Av is the only thing close to a pickup that GM builds with four doors and the 5.3 engine? AND, the 1500HD only comes in a CC?
