YTD CR-V sales are up 1.3% over the same time last year, however for the month of June 08 compaired to the month of June 07, CR-V sales were down 9.9%.
What that means is the travel rate on CR-V's, which used to be less then 15 days is now around 45-60 days. Still far better then most other brands.

DMV - $25.50 (transfer old plates and registration) otherwise $250
Tire fee - $7.50 (mandatory in NJ)
Docs - $197
Tax - 7% NJ Tax
I emailed a couple of dealers in the area and got some responses. Here was the best:
CR-V, LX, AWD $21,100
This is only $60 over Invoice ($95 assuming the car has the $635 Destination instead of the newer $670). I am doubting the dealership is selling for that cheap, so I think there is some extra cash back that I am missing (in addition to the standarde dealer holdback). Any thoughts? :confuse:
Next, CRV is still selling very well on it's own merit, therefore Honda does not see a need to place an incentive on them - not to the dealer or the consumer with a special APR.
There are pockets in this country where supply is exceeding demand. Honda works on an "earn and turn" inventory management system -- the more you sell, the more cars from the factory you earn. So to get the premuim cars (Civics and Fits) you have to sell CR-V's. I'm sure some dealers are more then willing to start discounting CR-V's to invoice or better (in the Minneapolis area, all six dealers are pretty much at or just below invoice).
The main thing I am wondering is if there was anything special about the "Honda Clearance Event". (That ad with that cartoon guy Mr. Opportunity). I don't see anything different than what Honda was offering a month ago (low loan rates on Accords, etc...)
Maybe what you are saying about supply exceeding demand is right for where I live (Northern Alabama) The Edmunds TMV does show a -$170 Regional Adjustment. I still have to wonder when I look at the numbers (with $635 Destination Fee):
Invoice: $21,005
TMV: $21,421
Dealer Quote: $21,100
Thanks
Cost $21583
Out the Door $22964
Doc Fee is $399.50
Vehicle Rec $189 (Window Etch, Supplemental Ins)
Title $16.57
Tax $766
Dealer said the Vehicle Rec Fee is optional.
Tax does vary depending on where you buy it. In their city, it is 3.5%. The next city over with a Honda dealership is 4%. However, I live in the county -- so if I go 15 miles north across the border into Tennessee, I would only pay the county tax rate when I register -- 2.75%. That can amount to $200 - $250 difference in my out of pocket expenses. So it looks like I will be requesting some quotes from dealers in Tennessee.
23,713$ is the basic price, I have to pay TTL.
I'm also looking for an extended warrenty for which I was quoted $1326 (3 year extended warrenty bumper to bumper)
The vehicle is costing me $26,700 OTD w/warrenty. Is this a good deal?
The tax in my county is 7%. I have searched many different dealerships and this was the best price I could get. What do you think???
Anyone have a better quote or actual sale in northern NJ/PA or southern NY area?
Thanks.
Just that the dealer is 7 hours of drive away, I am not sure if it's worthwhile to spend the gas on. I will want local dealers to match it! that will be the best.
Are you in NJ area? If so, can you tell me which dealer you went to get this deal? This deal looks pretty awesome to me.

If you don't want to fill out the form, then give them the check and wait two weeks for it to clear.. then go pickup your car..
Most people just fill out the form..

Thanks for the quick and thorough reply. I didn't bother to get a complete quote because I was in a rush. I am also not ready to buy until early or mid August. Some other NJ dealers are charging $199 for docs. I also realize the choices will go down as the model year runs out. The salesman at the dealer said the 2009 CRVs will arrive in September but could not say exactly when. Do you have any idea. Also, just curious, your comment about steel contracts shows an unusual depth of knowledge - are you in the business? efpat
$22,000 (base price including destination fee)
$1,100 (5% Mass. tax)
$379 (doc./plates/registration)
Based on Edmunds and others, this looks good to me. A bit easier than I thought though. Any comments?
Here's what I suggest you when you are ready to actually buy as it worked great for me:
Take 2 of your very best quotes to the dealer that you prefer to do business with and not necessarily the one with the lowest quote) and tell them, and this is important, that you are prepared to buy a car today from THEM right now, and that you will if they can significantly beat the quotes that you have and get you the color vehicle that you want.. I did this going in with a quote of $25K without dest which happens to be a decent quote and they "ate" the dest and said they would go 25k WITH the dest. It was a done deal for me.
I didn't have a trade so that simplified it. I also had my financing in place before I went but told them if they could beat the rate I would go with their financing.
Believe me, if they know that you are serious about buying that day and that you have done your homework you stand a very good chance of getting the deal that you hoped for. If you can wait to the last week of the month, all the better. They are really trying to move the 08's before the 09's come out..
thetwo best quotes came from Commonwealth Honda, Lawrence Ma and Atamian Honda,Tewsksbury, MA They were both super to deal with online, no pressure and no phone calls. There didn't inundate me with follow up emails, either.
Good Luck and let us know how you made out!
$22,479 OTD seems like a very good price...
Just so there's no confusion, beaker's OTD price was quoted at $23,479, not $22,479, for a 2008 CR-V EX AWD, which seems to be excellent if it transacts at that price. Regardless, bugg, you did a nice negotiation on your EX-L AWD, and provided some good tips.
$21,100 + doc fee $499 + anti theft etching $299 + sales tax $711.68 + title fee $16.50 = $22,626.18
When I inquired about the anti theft etching, the salesman said "We etch all of our cars, however we can omit the cost to you if you do not want it."
I will get serious about negotiating if Honda offers some cash back on 2008s. Otherwise it just makes sense to wait for Sept-Oct and get a 2009. Has anyone seen anything listing any changes for the 2009s? I am sure they will be minor, but it would be nice to know what they are (if any).
Reasonable doc fee? I don't really know what is reasonable. One dealership that gave me the lowest initial quote wanted $499 doc fee (see above). A different dealership that had a little bit higher initial quote wanted a $299 doc fee. Definitely reply to the emails you got requesting an OTD price with a breakdown of fees. Thats what I did and both dealerships replied the same day. When I questioned the anti-theft etching fee ($299 -- almost pure profit for them), they both said they could get rid of that fee.
Boy my fingers are tired from typing
Since the deal was relatively easy, I am (of course) thinking I should have either pushed the dealer more or shopped the deal around first. But I don't think I would have been able to get much lower than I got...another $250 - $500 wouldn't have been worth the time and energy. I'm happy where I ended up.
What is "fair profit" to assume a dealer should make on a sale? $400? $600? Is it taboo to mention the 2% holdback and call them out on doc fees being a fancy word for profit?
I want to get a good deal but don't want to put them on the defensive too much.
