Well, I did my clunker deal today. Basically when emailing by internet I never mentioned clunker. But at some point I had to mention it because some dealers were not even doing clunker deals. Then I had issue of hubby wanting a specific color that many dealers didn't have so I had to call around, revealing clunker. Plus many dealers pretty much suspected that anyone calling them July 31, Aug 1 or 2 had a clunker to trade in. (Any sane car buyer without that issue would avoid shopping now for sure!!!)

So I didn't get the best price, but I'm in NYC metro area and I think prices here are higher than in the Midwest from what I have heard. Learned a lot about buying cars from the experience and hopefully it will help me do better on next vehicle.

I got a written quote from a dealer in NJ. You have to pay sales tax, motor vehicle fees (he estimated $190- probably stuff like transfer tags emissions etc) and doc fee of $199 (New York limits doc fee to $45 fortunately).

Definitely get a written quote by email specifying the model you want in particular. Invoice is apparently 26919 + 710. So if he's quoting you 25700 + 710 he's giving you the vehicle at 1200 under invoice. Honda is giving a $500 factory incentive, and I guess the other 700 is either competitive pricing or he's gonna make it up somewhere in extra fees, so make sure to ask what all the other fees are in writing before going in.

Certainly other NJ Honda dealers like DC in Tenafly and Paul Miller were not giving that kind of a discount.
  • nassakeagnassakeag Member Posts: 8
Yep- he's making up for that $700 discount with these fees. Destination is actually low, believe it's actually 710 according to Honda website. Motor vehicle should be more like $190 (I paid $150 in New York but it could be like $70 more if you get new plates). Doc fee was 199 at another NJ dealer, so these discrepancies could add up to $460 or so. So you're really coming in around $750 under invoice.

    Window etching- BS
The other charges seem small and probably legit.

Could you discern from looking at the VIN, if the vehicle came directly from Japan or was assembled elsewhere? (I was told that the Toyotas from Japan have VINs beginning with the letter "J". I wondered if this was also true for the Hondas.)
    Thanks a lot!

All cars assembled in Japan have a VIN that starts with J.. not just Toyota...

Thank you nassakaeg. anyways it is the price/fees over phone. Might be able to better with in-person negotiation. I got everything in written now.

Just got a quota with an OTD price of $23,082.30. The base price is $21,310. Is this a good price? Please comment. Thank you,

Get quotes from other dealerships. If you're not doing C4C you have time.
  • shophappilyshophappily Member Posts: 11
went shopping this past weekend. the dealers we went to in Queens, NY are not willing to negotiate, their attitudes were 'take it or leave it', 24-25k OTD
  • shophappilyshophappily Member Posts: 11
did anyone get their cash? how long does it take for the approval?
  • hoodwinkhoodwink Member Posts: 25
    jnnt29,
Is it out the door (OTD) price or is it before tags and taxes? Does it include destination charges also?
  • bigdadi118bigdadi118 Member Posts: 1,207
No cash is needed. Dealer will arrange the credit to the new car if qualified. Also will give $100 scrap fee for scraping the clunker.
  • kusonkuson Member Posts: 8
ask them to send you an email..you will know what I mean.
First email they woulndt give you model name, may just write CRV.(not telling whether it is 2wd or 4wd).you reply back asking for right model and he will reply but would miss out destination charges.. catch is to keep something hidden and bring it up when you are there to make purchase :) Old st-- trick.
  • kusonkuson Member Posts: 8
    Not really for 4wd lx.. best I have so far is 19750 + 710 (dest) + tag + tax + 310 (doc fee) = approx 22400
  • shophappilyshophappily Member Posts: 11
which dealer gave you the quote? thanks
  • gravitigraviti Member Posts: 1
Anyone who purchased a vehicle recently in NorCal know how much those fees are? I am planning to purchase a vehicle by the end of this or next week.

Oh, and also anyone who purchased a new CR-V lately, how many miles were on the vehicle on the day you rcvd the keys? 10 miles? 50 miles? What's reasonable? less than 100 miles?

Btw, a few dealerships I talked to are negotiating off of MSRP when they know that you are doing a C4C. If you are not doing a C4C, then if you have Costco or AAA membership, then they start the negotiation off those price lists. If anyone has had a different experience, please share.

I live in Skaneateles and saw your post earlier this week. I went to Fox and they denied having made this deal-- even with a print out of your post. I did not like dealing with them. In fact, I bought a 08 Civic EX 18 months ago and went with Lamachia in Syr because Fox was tough to work with. Just fyi. The price you got seemed fair. Thanks for your post.

4WD! I live north of route 81; I have to get out of all the snow!! :shades:
  • bells1bells1 Member Posts: 7
I'm not a fan of Fox, at all, but I wanted a good deal. It doesn't surprise me that they didn't want to deal....they're making a lot with the cash for clunkers. I think I got it because it was the end of the month and I was more than willing to walk away from it. I had two other dealerships(lammachia and Honda City) willing to work with what I was looking for...but I was glad to get it over with when Fox offered to beat them!! Hope you're enjoying your Civic. I loved my '99 with standard transmission, hated to see it go!! Good luck!

I am working on buying a 2-wheel drive EX-L without Nav in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. It looks like the best quote I have so far is just under $24,400 plus TTL. That price includes a 7-year, 100,000 mile powertrain warranty. I do not have a trade-in. The price seems decent although sales taxes are pretty high down here. I will definitely have to get the final drive out price before trekking 45 miles to look at the vehicle.

Really, my question is about a feature that I somehow missed when looking at and test driving the vehicles. Really this is a relatively minor point, but on the EX-L without nav, does the radio have the RDS capability where it displays station names and song titles? I hope it does, especially since the Honda Fit that I bought for my daughter three weeks ago has that capability.

By the way, CR-V's seem to still be relatively plentiful in Dallas-Fort Worth. The specific vehicle I am looking for (red EX-L) seems to be in very short supply (might just be one ??) but most other models and colors seem to be available. I started looking at CR-V's and RAV-4's a few weeks ago but there are literally just a handful of RAV-4's of any type in my general vicinity.

Thanks for any information you can share about my radio question above.

Purchase CRV-LX AWD in chicago for 20,275 + tax, title and license. Dissappointed in a couple dealer who gave me a internet quote, without the options.
Wanted to charge me $200 for front mudflaps. Finally gave in and paid a $100 for the mud flaps. Told them i was very disappointed.

I just bought a CR-V EXL for $24,900 from Don Davis Honda in Buffalo. Lia Honda was competitive and decent to deal with. The absolute worst to deal with was Holtz Honda in Rochester; will tell you anything to get you in the door: avoid them like the plague. The lowest price I had in Rochester was from Dick Ide. If you have a Cash for Clunkers (CARS) vehicle don't mention it until after you have agreed on a price as most of the dealers are charging more if you're going through that program.
  • kusonkuson Member Posts: 8
thats best price I seen so far.. good job.
  • tidalwavetidalwave Member Posts: 25
Hi. Does that $24,900 include tax, title, license, and other fees? If so, then that is an excellent price.

Also, in reference to a post I made above, do you know if the radio in that EX-L has the RDS system where it displays song titles from radio stations?

    Thanks and enjoy your CR-V.

I got a 2009 CRV EX AWD OTD for $23,800 last friday (7/31/09). The invoice price including the destination charges was around 22,600 and then paid the processing fee of 399 and a sales tax of 715 and TTL was around $50..I bought it from Pohanka Honda of Fredericksburg in Virginia. I was looking for a 2WD and they didn't have the 2WD in the color i was looking for (black ext/ivory interior) ..Price does not include any accessories. I leave in Richmond and the nearest quote i received was $500 more than what Pohanka offered me. Also i didn't have any trade in or CFC..

Do you think it was a good deal..
  • lori56lori56 Member Posts: 19
Yes, I think you got an ok deal. The EX is more expensive than the LX, but maybe you really didn't need the AWD when you were looking for a 2WD. If you had more time to look around, I think you might have landed an EX 2WD elsewhere in the black ext/ivory interior. A 2WD runs about $2000 or so less than an AWD, from what I can tell on the 'net. Could they have located what you wanted elsewhere?

Good luck with your new vehicle!
  • subbu1subbu1 Member Posts: 4
Thanks for the comments..The 2WD was only $1100 less than the 4WD and they said it would cost $300 to get the 2WD of my choice from another dealer. In that scenario, for another $800 i was getting a 4WD and thought it was a decent deal to me..The other dealers that had the 2WD were quoting approx 400-500 more than what Pohanka was quoting..
  • shophappilyshophappily Member Posts: 11
the 21k, is it OTD or plus taxes, fees...etc?
we also requested several quotes from varies dealers, but by the time we got to the showroom, they always said there's CONFUSION, the internet specialist who gave the quote works from home and DONT represent them blah....blah....

    thanks

I am looking to purchase a EX-L fairly soon. Which dealership in Dallas do you suggest I contact.

I am in Austin and doing my due dillegence to find the best deal. I appreciate any feedback.

    Thanks

I live on the southwest edge of Fort Worth and bought a Honda Fit three weeks ago and am working on buying a CRV EX-L right now. I bought the Fit from Huggins Honda in North Richland Hills. They were extremely easy to deal with and very up front in quickly giving a low price. The finance guy was a little pushy but not too bad. I would definitely recommend contacting Huggins at least for a price.

I am going today to Rusty Wallis Honda in Dallas to look at a CRV EX-L. Rusty Wallis seems to be very highly rated as a sales and service entity. My experience has been very positive so far. The internet sales guy is pretty quick to respond. All of their vehicles include a 7-year, 100,000 mile powertrain warranty. I am now waiting to hear what kind of add-ons are on the vehicle before I drive the 60 miles over there. They do a strange thing of loading up vehicles with add ons and then letting the customer remove the ones they don't want. That seems like a recipe for a big hassle and and argument to me. In general, however, my experience with Rusty Wallis seems to match the high ratings (see a site called Dealer Rater) but I am getting a little wary about the add on thing and the fact that the sales guy still has not given me an exact, total drive out price.

I did email several other dealers for price quotes, but did not contact them any more after finding their prices were pretty high or after not being able to get a straight answer out of the sales person. All in all, if you like a fairly low pressure process, the two dealers above should fit the bill. Of course, others may have a completely different experience.

Hi all-just purchased a new 09 CR-V LX with 2WD (ivory interior) from Honda of Slidell. The OTD price was 21,500 all inclusive. The sale price 19,350 dealer fee of 295 and remaining taxes, title, license etc. What do you all think? Is it a good deal?

Hey everyone...I've been shopping around for a CRV in the Washington state area. I've talked to half a dozen dealerships and have used strategies from this website to pit dealership vs dealership. So far, all of the sales reps have been quite polite and have just told me that they couldn't match a deal. Earlier today, I emailed a sales rep from Northwest Honda in Bellingham, WA. I asked him if he could beat a deal I received from another dealership. Here's our email correspondence today:

    Me:
Here's what I'd like: 09 CRV-EX-L AWD for $25900, including destination charge, mudflaps, pinstripe, wheellocks, and detail. If you can make this happen, I will buy. I need a white one with gray leather.

    Sales Guy:
Bummer, I could have gotten you that Out-the-door LAST month. By the looks of it, you've been shopping. Thats a good price. Buy it.

Sales Guy (a few minutes later in a 2nd email):
And stop nickle and dimming everyone. No offense but you're being an [non-permissible content removed]. Dealerships have to make money too and you are squabbling over a hundred bucks. Pony-up and stop being such a tight-[non-permissible content removed].
  • leto123leto123 Member Posts: 28
Don't give that dealership your business! If they treat you like that when you're trying to buy a $25900 item, just imagine what they will be like when you are no longer in the driver's seat and need repairs, etc. As for his sob story (which I also got), you know a dealership is not going to sell a car unless they benefit financially - simple as that. They can make money on the sale, add-ons, warranty, financing, under-the-radar sales target programs -- the list goes on and on. We're educated buyers and won't fall for that!

    A few questions and comments:

--Are you dealing with a sales rep, sales manager, or internet sales manager? The later two have more leverage to make deals with little profit, since often they are also focused on volume. It may be too late for this particular dealership, but I would recommend only talking to the sales or internet managers. I also recommend talking to them on the phone so they know you're a real person (call during the week when they have less volume).
--Did a dealership quote you the price you asked for? Many dealerships are paranoid that customers are lying to them about the deals they are getting elsewhere, so they may be trying to call your bluff.
--In general, the Cash for Clunkers program has reduced dealerships' inventory, so it may be harder to negotiate. Supply and demand.
--If you can wait to buy, you may want to try closer to the end of the month when dealerships are trying to sell the last few cars they need to sell to make their monthly targets. You may also want to contact dealerships further away if the financial benefit is sufficient.

If a sales rep sent me an email calling me an "[non-permissible content removed]", I would forward it to the dealerships GM, owner(if possible) , and Honda. They need to be aware of the of jerks that represent them.
  • Shep626Shep626 Member Posts: 6
wow. I agree with AJ34474. No doubt, I'd be forwarding that email to the GM of that dealership. Hell, maybe they'll feel so bad about it, they'll consider giving you the deal you want..

    Hi,

When is the 2010 CRV expected to hit the dealer lots?
Its mid- August and I do not see any discussion or posts regarding the 2010.

Since its been 3 years since this CRV model was introduced, the 2010 should get a mid-cycle refresh. Any feedback would be appreciated!

I have been looking into buying a CRV or a RAV4. I have seen on line in various forums and owners reviews that some owners feel the seats lack sufficient padding. I was wondering if anyone here felt this way.

This is not the kind of thing that a person could notice in a test drive, as the people that complain have owned the car a few weeks and said that they notice the lack of padding after driving an hour or so.

I would probably use the car on long trips, at least occasionally, and I'm not small at 6 ft., 220 lbs. Any thoughts/comments?

    Thanks in advance!
  • vrmvrm Member Posts: 310
You should test drive the Subaru Forester.

I believe it is has enough room that you wont feel cramped and will be able to see the traffic lights if you are first in line. The 2010 model is on dealer lots.
  • sr146260211sr146260211 Member Posts: 55
Test drove the Forester, nice, but it lacked the style of the CR-V that I liked and cost a bit less, has a nice Nav system over other manufactures. JDPower list the Honda CR-V's reliability better over Subaru

Check out the 2010 model Honda when its released in a month or so. It will have some Mid Year Mild Make Over

Believe me forester sucks. It drives great first few years. The design features are excellent. What I hate about forester is the reliability of components. Mine is 8 yrs old and have changed bearings, oxygen sensors like 9 times, multiple issues.

I am trying to get rid of the subaru and go with CRV even though I like the styling of Forester.
  • jikjik Member Posts: 144
    same here in indy.

If you can drive to chicago the prices are more reasonable. You should get one for 20.8 K including only destination.

I think seat comfort can be very subjective. Some people like driving a couch, and some don't. I remember when I had the Si that came with Recaro seats, they were not coushioned at all, but just ocvered in Alcantara, or whatever is the name for faux suede. They were the most comfortable seats for me.

I am sure there is a person just like in the kids story about the pricess and a pea, who could feel a pea under 7 layers of mattresses.

You need to get out there and test drive each one of the vehicles in question, and be aware that different trims of the same vehicle may have different seats. Play with all the adjustments and find the one that feels the best.
