I recently bought a used low mileage 04 Pacifica and I think it's the best car I have ever had. I left Chrysler products 20 years ago because of their unreliability. Although there is more room for improvement (from some of the posted messages)I feel they have made great progress and my experience so far has been good. I wish those with so-called lemons better luck in resolving their issues and getting a vehicle that is worthy of their investment.

Hi, all. I'm looking to purchase a new or used Chrysler Pacifica AWD or FWD. I'm aware of the front end clunking issue as reported in the threads and Chrysler's reluctant response to them. If anyone could give me their general or specific opinions on my possible purchase, I'd gladly appreciate it. I will be at a Chrysler dealership in the Bronx, NY this week and I will bring up the issue of very poor repair service. Thanx!

For a full year before my purchase, I stopped and talked to every owner of the Pacifica. I got nothing but great feedback from each. I loved the way the automobile looked! One area of concern, was the fact there are blind spots. Only area of concern. The drivers loved the automobile, comfort, ride, expense.
I bought mine through eBay, from a person who re sells expired leased vehicles. This vehicle had over 21,000 in one year, so I guess they wanted out. The only problem I have ever had was with the gas gauge. That is really Mopar's fault, not Chrysler, other than that's where they get their parts. The replacements were defective, as you can research through Google. The dealership I use in Phoenix has been nothing short of exceptional.
Personally, I would own no other car! The automobile rides excellent, with the exception of the Gas issue, (that happen in the desert I might add) I have had no problems. Everybody loves the ride, the car has everything but 4 wheel drive. I really didn't want that anyway, as I was not going to take it places the frugal person would not take a $37,000.00 auto, and I don't get snow. (Something else to go wrong, on something used very little) I have fixed my mirrors, so I don't have any blinds pots. If I had it to do over, no questions, I buy the car!

well, if it fills all of your needs and wants, as I've said before, i think its a great vehicle.

If I had it to do again, though, I'd just get the FWD. Far better gas mileage and acceleration.

There are other vehicles I would get instead, personally, but my wife wanted 3 rows and not a minivan, so that restricts the choices quite a bit.

I have a 2005 pacifica touring and the steering wheel locks while I am driving it.I have to turn the car off in the middle of the road and restart it to unlock the wheel. the dealership doesnt know what is wrong with it.

I'm so sorry. My clunking seems a lot less important now. That sounds like a very dangerous safety issue. Were I you, I would call Chrysler customer service and file a claim with NHTSA.

In my experience, Chrysler gets on the ball when you bring up safety.

Sounds like your power steering pump is failing or you are very low on power steering fluid.

It fit more of my needs than any other car on the market considering all things but I will not go foward with what may appear to be a flaky vehicle.

Which vehicles were you considering along with the Pacifica and which did your wife prefer? I was considering the Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey but... it's a minivan, not that cool. I also considered the Chevy trailblazer and GMC Envoy but the appearance of the dash electronics sucks incredibly compared to the Pacifica. I also didn't want to sit high up in vehicle, yet wanted something more than my current mercury sable wagon.

For the last few weeks I've been going between the Pacifica and the Sienna. No the clunking and engine/motor issues I read a heardd about on the Pacifica are forcing me to reconsider again, and the I hear the Sienna's safety isn't great at all (I need to do some research on that) plus I don't want to spend over $25k on a minivan. I'd rather spend that on a Pacifica.

I don't know what to do. I might just go with a Toyota Camry and keep my wagon. I'm tired.

Go for the Pacifica. I feel you only have a 1% chance of being disappointed.

Don't forget how many satisfied owners out there enjoying a trouble-free PAC. I have a clunking issue but from what I mentioned before 1 out of 9 hears the noise. Other than that I love the car. I have put 16k on it and it still drive same way the first day I bought it. The way I see it, Every car will have some/minor problems. :)

I just had another new fuel pump installed and it failed in the first 50km (same as the first 2 replacement pumps.) The passenger side of the fuel tank is not transfering to the driver side. This is why the sensors go from reading 1/2 full to empty instantly. If the driver side of the fuel tank is empty then the fuel line to the engine is dry and the vehicle will not run, even though the passenger side of the tank is near full. The Chrysler repair instructions say that the drivers side of the tank should never be lower than the passenger side of the (saddle bag style) fuel tank. There are 3 possiblities for this problem as far as I can tell. 1) The fuel pump does not have enough volume and pressure to supply the 58psi required by the fuel injection system; and maintain the fuel transfer from the passenger side of the fuel tank. 2) The siphon venturi is not designed properly for the volume/pressure required 3)The siphon hose is too small for the amount of fuel required to be transfered. Either way it is not the owner's fault or responiblity for the failure of the system and Chrysler will not address the problem. It is easier for them to keep replacing the parts until the problem is resolved rather than correct the design. In the meantime everyone with this problem is inconvienced at best and endangered at worst. Dr. Z. looks good in TV ads but does not measure up to the words.

Yes? Do you want to say something? By your emoticons, I assume you aren't happy with the list? If that's the case, here's a list to ponder:

    '05 Pacifica = 1 recall and 43 TSBs
    '05 Honda Pilot = 2 recalls and 77 TSBs
    '05 Chevy Trailblazer = 1 recall and 122 TSBs
    '05 Ford Explorer = 2 recalls and 48 TSBs

    '11 GMC Sierra 1500; '08 Charger R/T Daytona; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '08 Maser QP; '11 Mini Cooper S

Which vehicles were you considering along with the Pacifica and which did your wife prefer?

Well, like I said, the choices are limited when the wife refuses to get a minivan. We had a Pilot for 2.5 years and really liked it. But the wife drove the heck out of it (about 55k miles in that time). The numbers worked out to where it just made sense to trade at that time.

Anyway, the honda dealers were very uncooperative when we tried to get a new Pilot. Back before we bought our Pilot, I had wanted the wife to check out the Pacifica, but she wasn't interested. For some reason, this time she was. We also had previously tried the Trailblazer on for size. It just didn't have the fit, finish, and feel of the Pilot or Pacifica. After testing the Pac, she had her mind made up. She felt it was as tight, quiet, and versatile as the Pilot, while adding all the luxury features she had been missing. We had been looking for a lightly used one, but the dealer gave us such an incredible deal on a leftover '05 (this was Sept of '05), we couldn't refuse.

Well you certainly are a fan of Chrysler and have obviously had a wonderful experience with their service department. I have not. I have read your replys to people requesting advice and I don't see any real technical information being passed. What I would like to know is where you got the TSB and recall information? My dealer would not even let me see a list much less have a copy of it. Come to think of it customer service refused to even discuss the problem once they found I was 3000km past my warranty. So your points to ponder are really quite useless on a page looking for answers and not cheerleading. I hope when your pacifica reaches the 60000 to 70000km range you can still be so smug. :P

So your points to ponder are really quite useless

And how was your list useful? What problems are you having? You didn't ask for any advice or state any issues, you merely copied and pasted a public list.

I got the list right here on edmunds. Its in their maintenance section.

I give advice when advice is requested and warranted. Most people don't ask for it here, they merely make a blanket statement that chrylsers or pacificas are garbage. Those are the posts I find annoying and I respond accordingly.

By the way, it has nothing to do with Chrysler. I respond to folks in regards to many different makes and models. Many issues are universal, and many folks have found my experience both as a mechanic and consumer useful. If you don't, that's your perogative, and you are certainly free to ignore my posts.

As far as advice for you ... as you are somewhat now giving a small hint of what you're going through ... is the same I've posted for many people and you apparently don't appreciate. The dealer is not the end of the line, they are the beginning. Go to another dealer. If that doesn't work, contact Chrysler directly.

Well you certainly are a fan of Chrysler and have obviously had a wonderful experience with their service department.

This pretty much strikes at the heart of my pet peeve. Chrylser does not have a service department. A bad dealer is a bad dealer, end of story. It has NOTHING to do with Chrysler!

You may be in love with your car car as you stated in a previous post. I am not one to attach emotions to objects. In fact I own a car with problems that the manufacturer refuses to address. I own a car that the service rep of the company refused to acknowledge had any short comings. The short comings are as listed in the TSB lists. The lists should be taken as warnings of the cars reliability. My problem as stated before is the fuel pump system which has left my wife stranded on a highway. I am getting the 4th pump ordered and installed. The repair facility I am dealing with is much more concerned and helpful than any of the dealerships I have dealt with. If I could get the problem fixed I would be quite happy. I am out over $800 and can only expect that the problem will continue until all the defective fuel pumps in north america have been cycled through the vehicles of unsuspecting customers. The fact that it is the service reps of Chrysler that I have dealt with does in fact make it the company's problem and not the individual dealer. If the mechanics and service reps I have to deal with need bigger "hints" than what I have already posted then I will surely to have to talk alot slower.

I'm not sure why you are getting mad for not providing this board with all of this info in the first place, but whatever.

You are finally giving details as to your problem and what has been done in an attempt to fix it. That's good. You are NOW posting useful info for people. Keep up the good work.

You must have me confused with someone else. I'm pretty darned sure I've never said I "love" this car ... because I don't, so I don't see myself saying it.

I was wondering if there is a similar database that lists the numbers of bonafide lemon buybacks for each of the vehicles listed for comparison?
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 32,891
    that's a good question.

It would be nice, but I kinda doubt it. I would think manufacturers would work real hard to hide those numbers.

Why did you not check message 2064 before becoming so defensive?
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 32,891
You know what? You're right. You have given a good deal of information. I just have to be really bored and have alot of free time to track it all down.

2035 - Aug 18th - "For the last month I have had repeated failures of the fuel pumps." ... ok, is this repeated failures of the same pump? And now its getting replaced for the first time for $800? Ok, so a part failed. Big deal. It happens. [mind you, i'm just stating my reaction to this first post only, not to your whole situation ... yet]
2064 - Aug 28th - 4th NEW fuel pump. Chrysler will not address the problem (not much here ... what do you mean they won't address it? you called them? what did they say? or are you just referring to a dealer?". You say "its easier for them to keep replacing parts," so I assume you've paid nothing out of pocket and they keep trying to fix it. Yes, in the first post, you said you had to pay, but that was 10 days ago and I, as a reader, should not be expected, nor will I, go back to see if you've posted before with different information.
2069 - Aug 29th - "My dealer would not even let me see a list much less have a copy of it. Come to think of it customer service refused to even discuss the problem once they found I was 3000km past my warranty." Yet more good info. This shows how you've been treated and why you are getting frustrated. This should have been in the first post.
2073 - Aug 30th - "left my wife stranded on a highway" - yet another good bit of info to help explain your frustration. Again, once its all together, I understand why you are upset. Its just too bad I had to do all this work.

Here's the thing. You've got one problem. Is it annoying? Yes. Does it sour your owning experience? Obviously. Posting a list of TSBs of which all but one have NOTHING to do with your car is just silly. You obviously did it in some attempt to show that the list proves the car is junk.

You then got mad at me for pointing out that all vehicles have TSBs, and even vehicles considered much more reliable than Chrysler have LONGER lists of TSBs. I'm sorry, but that's not being defensive, that is just stating pure fact. So rather than posting a list of TSBs as if this somehow proves all PACs are garbage, simply relay YOUR problem in a coherent and succinct manner and you'll be much more successful in getting your grievance across to the reader.

The engine has failed in our brand new Pacifica (3 weeks old, approx 4K miles), and we would be very grateful to anyone who has tips in dealing with Chrysler to get the problem resolved. Specifically, we would like to know -

    1) How can you get Chrysler to issue a refund given a severe problem on a new car, and if so, what person do you go to at Chrysler?
    2) Do you have any data on the market value of a new car vs. new car with a replaced engine? (ie, will this affect our value in a major way?)
    3) Has anyone had a similar major problem, and how did you get it resolved?

In our case, we had some chugging / knocking problems at start-up and a slight scree-ing sound from the belt area. Then, while driving along on vacation in Ohio, the belt shredded, got pulled into the crankshaft / timing gears, threw off the timing 6 points and damaged valves and pistons.

So far, Chrysler has helped some, but it's been a bit of a run around. The out of town dealer in Ohio was nice, but took 4 days to determine it needed a new engine. Our dealer in Minnesota said they'd do everything possible to help, but so far is waiting for more information before they contact anyone at Chrysler. Chrysler has set up a file and is evaluating the possible refund. Meanwhile, the Ohio dealer has involved the Chrysler District Manager, and appears to be going through the process of installing a new engine. With a post-factory engine job, we're not confident this car will ever work right once they get it "fixed".

Given the $ millions Chrysler spends on advertising, it seems like a simple process to refund our money and sell the old car at auction, costing them a $ few thousand at the most.

Any ideas on where to go / how to get resolved? Thanks very, very much!

Where is my post #2085 ?

Talking about Chrysler hiding problems they don't want to fix ... does this violate Edmunds policies ?

I didn't get an email explaining why my post was deleted.

I am sorry to hear about your engine failure. To have it happen on vacation makes it all the worse. Having said that I think that once you get it back, it should be as good as new. This is not like body work where you worry about the frame being bent, etc. Once you replace a defective mechanical part with a new one, the car should be as good as new. A factory replacement engine should not hurt your resale value. Hopefully you will be back on the road soon enjoying the car-like handling and the upscale interior. I have 25,000 miles on my 2006, and I enjoy it more every day.

A bit of a hasty conclusion. We're moving away from these everything in one pile discussions and breaking things down into smaller, more focused discussions.

Posts on the suspension clunking have been moved to the new Chrysler Pacifica Suspension Issues discussion where you may continue.

Before you post, please check the discussion list for the appropriate discussion. If an issue comes up that we don't have a separate discussion for yet, feel free to create a new one. We're still trying to keep discussions categorized by general type of issue, like the following topics:

New Pacifica Owners - Give Us Your Report
Chrysler Pacifica: Audio & Entertainment Systems
    Chrysler Pacifica: MPG-Real World Numbers
    Chrysler Pacifica: Starting/Stalling Problems
Chrysler Pacifica Test Drive - What Did You Think?
    Chrysler Pacifica NAV System Questions
    Chrysler Pacifica Suspension Issues
to give you an idea of where we're headed.

Thanks for you help and understanding as we move the furniture around a bit! ;)

There is actually a reference to this in the vehicle manual. Chrylser is VERY aware of this problem. Their solution is to change the window opening until it goes away. WOW.....never would have thought of that. So much for the aerodynamics of the car.

Tire pressure alarm after about 60 miles on my new 2006 FWD Touring. There's mention of a pressure calibration elsewhere in the forums but the 2006 doesn't seem to have that. Also the donut magnet might work but I'm taking it to the dealer tomorrow. The pressure on the inside door label is 33psi but the tires (235x55x19) have a 44max listing. I've tried from 33-40 but still get the error. Drove >100mi at each pressure. Going to the dealer tomorrow but would like any feedback anyone has.
    Thanks

Did you check the spare tire too? It also has the pressure sensor in it.

Yes, after you suggested it I did check it. 60psi which should be OK.
    Thanks for the idea though.
    Anything else?????
btw, the donut magnet.. does it automatically put the computer into calibration mode or do you need to have that up on the menu first. I can probably come up with a magnet from work to do this if I need to.

I think this is a bad idea. I have no interest in reading so many forums that each get just a few posts a month. I find it much more enjoyable to read an active forum on a broader range of issues.
  • PF_FlyerPF_Flyer Member Posts: 9,372
The place to discuss the forums software is the Forums Software! Your Questions Answered... discussion.

This particular discussion illustrates why the change is happening. Over 2000 posts about many different types of problems. If you want to find information about Pacifica suspension problems, would you rather dig through 2000 posts, or just go to the Chrysler Pacifica Suspension Issues discussion?

My wife and i recently bought an 04 pacifica. looked and ran great for a couple of days, then it happened. my wife went to get in it and tried to crank it and it just cut off. dealer said it was in "theft" mode and quickly told us how to solve the problem. well, it has since happened again, and the solutions the dealer told us don't work....any suggestions?
  • primetime2628primetime2628 Member Posts: 21
Well they donutted the stems and reprogrammed the tire pressure for 35psi. That should do it. Other problems but I'll put them on another forum.
  • b25nutb25nut Member Posts: 202
I get a high pressure alert whenever the tires go over about 45 psi on my 2004 AWD. I keep mine around 40 psi. Several times after standard service has been performed on my Pacifica, I have discovered that the mechanic put the pressure up to 44 psi. When I drove it through the desert, the high pressure alert came on. I would think that 60 psi on the spare would set off the alert. My original tires now have over 56,000 miles and may get almost 10,000 more.

Thank you, The door pressure is listed as 33psi which is a joke. That's what they set the calibration at. Therefore if it goes 510 or outside the 28-43psi reading the alarm comes on. The dealer told me it was minus 5 or plus 10 for the alarm. I've set mine at 36 but am still not happy with the ride. I think i'm going to buy a 300 style magnet and calibrate myself. My 19in Michelins have 45 as the max pressure. I'm wondering what the average setting should be.

I changed my tires at 69,000 and I run them at about 35psi. They still looked good for at least 5,000 more. I replaced them with the original spec. tires.
  • primetime2628primetime2628 Member Posts: 21
35psi may inprove tread life a little but how is the ride? I found the steering and cornering like driving through mud....very sluggish and non responsive.
My mpg also has gone up at least 3mpg since raising the pressure. I'm currently running about 38psi.
  • thimmakerthimmaker Member Posts: 33
Actually its a little ROUGH at 35 psi with the 17" wheels but the handling is terrific so I don't mind the bumps. Highway driving pushes it up close to 40 anyway. I'm about ready to change my front brakes also since the mileage is now up to just under 80,000. Most maintenance free car I have owned.

:) Back again! The part change was the faulty secondary gas pump but they changed the primary pump too. For those who don't know the PAC comes with two gas tank and pumps. And it has been a source of a huge problem for owners like me.
NO payment was made, Chrysler will gladly pick up the tap I think!. I know the Dealer will not, thats for sure.

The Pac is too smooth running again. :shades:

    I've the 19" so it's probably a little different.
I do like the handling at the higher pressures though.

I leased my '05 August of last year. By the end of October I had had the car in the shop 6 days with multiple leaks which required (after I demanded) replacement of the entire carpet. Then in February my door locks and windows stopped working - I was told it was a cold weather issue and a "new" part would fix it. Then in May (well past cold weather) my doors and windows stopped working again. This time it was convenient to blame it on static. Yet another part was replaced. Then in July and again last month my car began stalling (what a shock) when making left turns. And then last week, guess what.... doors and windows stopped working again. Have issued Final Notice to Repair order to Chrysler and begun Lemon Law filings thru my State's Attorney General's office. I wouldn't recommend this car to anyone. It's an accident waiting to happen. I have two kids I commute with every day and my message center won't tell me if their doors are ajar, won't lock their doors for them and god forbid we are in an accident and the only way out is through an open window - we are all dead. Great job, Dr. Z..... :lemon: :lemon: :lemon:

Just noticed that my '06 Pacifica Signature Series engine rpm seems to be limited to 2500 rpm when gear shift is on Park or Neutral. It clearly cuts off at 2500 rpm when trying to rev it up on park.

When I put the gear shift to drive or autostick it revs up beyond 2500 rpm without any hesitation and the car drives just fine.

Anybody know if this is what it is supposed to do?

May I ask why you need it to rev any faster than that?
Even my lawnmower has a governor on it.
Same but with computer control.......good idea
Keeps someone....(hint) from blowing up the motor.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 32,891
you are not going to blow up the Pacifica's engine by revving past 2500 rpms sitting still (that is, if you were allowed to).

It already has a rev limiter to protect the engine ... it is at red line.

but, no, i don't necessarily need to rev past 2500 sitting still. I only discovered it when trying to jump a dead battery.
