It's a silver Grand Touring 5-door with automatic trans and the sunroof/Bose package. Black leather interior. Purchase price: $20,142 which includes the destination fee. The only other fee was DMV at $255. I also took the 0% APR at 36 months. Is this a good deal? I bought the car at a New Jersey dealership tonight.

    Regards,
    Craig

WOW that seems like a great deal. What is the name of the dealership in NJ and (if you don't mind), the salesman you dealt with. We are ready to purchase one similar to yours but a 4 door. The best price so far here in NY was $21,000 for a Grand Touring with the Bose/ Moonroof package. How did you negotiate this deal?
  • mrmjpegmrmjpeg Member Posts: 2
$17,221 sounds like a good deal. I'll be looking for something similar (sunroof instead of an Automatic) in about 6 months.

Are these the sorts of deals you get only when you are willing to settle for dealer stock? If you want something specific are you out of luck?

For example, I'll be wanting an True Red '08 3i w/ 5sp, ABS & Sunroof packages.
  • tommyceetommycee Member Posts: 10
I purchased the mazda 3 i touring 4 door a few weeks ago in Westchester NY. I paid $17,500 with 3 years zero% financing. Options included ABS/SideAB curtain, anti-lock brakes; moonroof with upgraded 6 cd stereo; spoiler; wheel lock; cargo net; all weather mats. I used the $300 coupon. The price paid was $800 less than invoice. However, the invoice included bogus advertising fees totaling $200+. I think I got a good deal. I'm very happy with the car.
  • jlim26jlim26 Member Posts: 1
Does that 17.5K include tax, dealer processing, and etc.?
    (And auto or manual?)

Even though it is retail price, i think that's great deal in term of including many options.

Where did you get $300 coupon?

    Thanks

Hi, I am going tomorrow to same dealer to pick up our Mazda3. Its the same one you bought. Were any of those extra fees negotiable, glass etching for example. Seems ridiculous to pay that but we got a great deal overall so if we have to pay it we will. How do you like the car so far? We also dealt with the same salesman you did, so far hes been great, hopefully no surprises tomorrow :)
  • sender1sender1 Member Posts: 43
The coupon was on the Mazda website for a short amount of time. According to the coupon it is good until the end of the month. The dealer told me Mazda pulled the coupon early because it was too popular. I printed mine out on July 13th which from what Ive been told is the last date Mazda had it up on the website. Each dealership seems to have its own coupons if you go to their website and fill out a form. Check out the various dealers websites.
  • tommyceetommycee Member Posts: 10
The $17.5 does not include tax or tags. It has auto trans.

Just picked up my GT mazda3 from Maxon. Great experience. Price couldn't be beat. Got more than $1600 off of invoice. Love the car. Call and speak to someone in the internet dept or if someone wants to email me, I'll give you the salesman's name.

2008 hatchback sport manual. Got it for 700 under invoice. According to edmunds invoice with destination is around 17500. Price paid was around 16700. OTD with TTL was 18200. No 0% financing but I have good credit so 1.9% ain't too bad. This was Russell and Smith Mazda in Houston and the transaction was very smooth and got it at a great price.
  • zzoomp09zzoomp09 Member Posts: 32
Yup, Denise's "salesman of choice" I think is Dino and he actually let me test drive a 3 even though I would not buy that car that day. Maxon really gives you great customer service. It's just a pity they don't have what I want at that time and I don't know all about dealer to dealer trading where the dealer can get the exact car you want from another dealer.

I could've saved a few thousand more with Maxon. :(

I am looking to purchase a 2007 3s Hatch w/automatic in the Atlanta area and would like some input on good dealers and what kind of pricing I can expect to get. We are looking to purchase in the next few weeks.

    Any help appreciated. Thanks!
  • zante64zante64 Member Posts: 24
Purchased a 2007 3 S Touring hatch. Black ext w/ 5sp. Only options were the rear step gaurd and wheel locks. (also the PZEV version of course)

    Paid $18,300 in July, 2007.

(we were inflexible about the color and man trans) So we could only find this combo in Sothern Cal - we live in SF Bay Area. We negotiated via phone - took about 3 minutes! I flew to Long Beach ($100 one-way ticket) the dealer picked me up at the airport before the dealership was even open. I got to the dealership at about 8:20am. All papers done and I was on the road for home before 10:00am! :shades:

Absolutely easy and great experience! Can't say eough good things about them.

    Browning Mazda in Cerritos, CA.

A side note - Mazda's online Chat Assistant was a huge help in helping locate the exact car we wanted.

Looking to purchase mazda3 S sedan. only option i want is rear side curtains. edmunds invoice is 17785.00 can i do better than that. Also is edmunds and kbb trade in values accurate. If I could purchase for invoice and they give me within 500 of what edmunds says my trade in vehicle is worth I will move forward. Shouln't that be easily doable.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
FYI, you can't get just rear side curtains on the Mazda3--they stretch from front to rear. Which is really what you want, right?
  • zante64zante64 Member Posts: 24
Don't even mention that you have a trade-in to the dealer before you reach a price on the Mazda. Car salespersons use what's called a "4-Square." They even have a form that is literally divided into 4 squares. It's really designed to misdirect your attention from one aspect of the sale to another. As in - if they know you have a trade-in, they'll use that to adjust the selling price of the new car. More for trade-in = higher new car selling price. Also - never get into a discussion on what sort of monthly payment you want to make. Same rule applies: Aways establish the price you are willing to pay before you discuss any other aspect of the deal.

    Good luck!

I bought a 2007 3 GT manual sedan with sunroof/bose package for $19275. The MSRP was $21725. The otd price with tax and fees was $20034. I think I got a great deal.
  • fal900fal900 Member Posts: 3
I know thats the rule of thumb to negotiate new car price first before mentioning a trade. On the other hand after you have negotiated your great new car price they will just low ball you on your trade in. They can work it both ways. I have tried it both ways with several dealers not disclosing anything about trade in financing etc.

This evening we picked up a new 2007 3s Sport Hatch w/automatic. This will be my wife's new car replacing a 1998 Escort. Needless to say she is thrilled with the extra zip the 3 gives her. We did some internet shopping before visiting a dealer. We ended up getting the car from Jim Ellis Mazda here in Atlanta and we were very happy with the whole experience. Here are the $'s:

Mazda3s Sport Hatchback in Sunlight Silver with Grey interior and auto: $17,165.00
    Dealer fee 399.99
    Tax 1,053.90
    Title 39.00

    Total OTD $18660.89

I think this is a good price, considering it's almost under invoice including tax :)

We took advantage of the 0% finance offer from Mazda which makes the deal even better.
  • jt120jt120 Member Posts: 6
I bought from Jim Ellis as well and got a great price. Well worth the 4 hour trip.

Will we see rebates on remaining 3s this fall? I realize there are special APR offers right now but wonder if they will increase the incentives as the yearend nears. Any thoughts?

Anyone paying anything less than msrp on a mazdaspeed3?

Also, what dealer fees did you pay? They seem to like to tack that on to the 'price" these days, so it helps to know if you paid msrp plus fees or msrp and no fees or whatever.

That's the exact car I am looking at, except an '07. When I priced up the invoice I came to $17,900.I have not received a firm number from the dealer yet but I was hoping to get it for $400 under invoice.

For another $500 maybe I should be looking at the 08's if that is all the price difference is.
  • eldainoeldaino Member Posts: 1,618
killer deals on a few mazdas at the local dealer...
they had a 3 s TOURING hatch going for 18500 ADVERTISED price.

i thought that was pretty sweet. the interest was 5.8 for sixty months.
  • chavis10chavis10 Member Posts: 166
My car has a boat load of problems so I'm gonna try again for an '07 GT. More features and hopefully the issues I've had have been worked out.

Galaxy Grey GT MSRP- $23,150 and he's only offering $22,206 (invoice is $21,545). Again, it's an '07 so don't you think they should be more aggressive with lowering the price? They've also low balled my trade in as Edmunds had $12,725 and they offered $11,500. Sounds like I have more negotiating to do, eh???
  • han7han7 Member Posts: 1
a dealer has offered a 2008 Mazda 3 'S' Sport Sedan with a 5 speed manual and Moonroof/6CD package for $17,562($18,900 msrp) plus $218 t/t. should i jump on this? would asking to addd leather seating, and offering $17,000 t/t out the door be asking too much? also, i'm not too familiar with when the year-end date is for the model, would anyone know when it is? i might wait until then to jump on a 2007 instead.

    2007 Silver Mazda3 s Touring with Moonroof.
    Here is the detail.
    MSRP: $20760
    Invoice: $19492
    OTD price: $20351
The numbers on paper are $18573 (invoice), $55 (document), $1537 (tax) and $186 (other official fees).

CA, 8.25% tax. How about this deal?
  • aviboy97aviboy97 Member Posts: 3,159
Edmunds had $12,725 and they offered $11,500. Sounds like I have more negotiating to do, eh???

Always negotiate. Keep in mind, Edmunds is a publisher, they are not in the "car business". Their trade values are not an accurate measurement of true vehicle value.
  • chavis10chavis10 Member Posts: 166
Thanks for the reply. I checked out Kelly Blue Book and they listed the value at $13,545. I'll set $13,000 as my lowest limit and go from there since I dew have a few dings and dents. I live in the city and park on the street so...
  • aviboy97aviboy97 Member Posts: 3,159
Sometimes thinking what KBB or Edmunds says is law may actually hurt you, and cause you to pass on a good deal. I know in my store, I have yet to sell a pre-owned vehicle for what KBB or Edmunds says it's worth. I always list the price lower then them, and I usually sell for even lower then that.

My advise it to have the dealer show you the book that they use to asses vehicle values, and have then explain how they came to their number. Here in the North East, we use Galves. Down south and in the mid west, I think they use whats called the "black book"

An important thing to remember about the "black book" is that it is a publication created for dealers and not by an independent third party. In other words, this presents the information from the dealers point of view. As a consumer I would look at several sources (including KBB) to balance the picture.

KBB does not buy or sell vehicles. How do they know what they are worth? They give you values for free, and make money through advertisement. If they were really reputable, why would they not charge for their info? Because it is worthless, and they know it.

Having KBB give a value for a vehicle is like me stating how much I think Sony should sell a TV for. I can do research on reliability and features until I am blue in the face, but, it gives me no merit to say how much one should sell for new or pre-owned.
  • aviboy97aviboy97 Member Posts: 3,159
An important thing to remember about the "black book" is that it is a publication created for dealers and not by an independent third party

That is incorrect. The Black Book is an independent company that established wholesale values for vehicles that pass through an auction. Galves is the same. Dealers use these books because most of the time, vehicles are traded in that are no longer a dealer retail piece. So, these vehicles need to go to an auction. A dealer needs to know what that vehicle will bring at an auction, so, these books are resourced as to what these vehicles true worth are. Hence what a real trade value is.

Now, if a dealer is taking in a retail piece, usually they will step up on the trade offer to make the deal because they can sell it for a profit. That does happen quite a lot.

Now, as a customer, I think it is wise to negotiate until you cannot go any further. That is what I suggested to that other person who posted. But, many times, people walk away from great deals because they are ignorant, stupid, or both.
  • chavis10chavis10 Member Posts: 166
He whipped out his little black book and the prices were roughly $2000 lower than what I found on Blue Book. This book did not include any provisions for all of the options on my car. He claimed the book is used at auctions and is a used car manager's bible. While this maybe true, I am always skeptical about anything being said at the neogiating table.

Example- they told me they'd give me the car at invoice yet when I examined the breakdown, the starting price is listed at invoice but the option package and accessories are at MSRP. I did not mention this as it assumed me somewhat. He worked so hard to gain my trust and I got him up $700 on my trade yet he still tries to assume I'm a foolish enough to let him sneak in an extra couple hundred dollars. The deceit is what really kills me about the entire car transaction game. Don't tell me I'm getting the car at invoice unless you are prepared to actually do so. When I go to sign my papers next week, I'm gonna have to show him that he's dealing with a savvy car buyer. If SOME of these employees displayed more honesty, I don't think they'd have the reputation that they do.
  • sandman46sandman46 Member Posts: 1,798
It definitely pays to know all the prices for all parts of any transaction. I would have also assumed that if the salesman says he will sell the car for invoice, that it would also include any option package or accessory that was added on. Invoice is invoice and at no time was MSRP ever discussed. Good for you for noticing this slip on his part. But keep one thing in mind...it may really have been a slip on his part and not intentional. I'd like to think that he just made a mistake, but part of me also thinks he's trying to slip it past you. Just wish honesty would play a bigger role in the car buying scenario...from every side! Probably dreaming on that score, but I always hold out some hope...the eternal optimist.

    The Sandman :)

    Negotiating is key.

It is unfortunate that many bad apples of the past still ruin the bunch for the future.

Car buying should be fun, not a stress. All parties should work together to make this happen. Good luck!

What really sets pricing is the auctions ...
MANHEIM is becoming the new "Galves/Black Book"

MANHEIM is an auction for dealers only. It basically helps to set pricing for trade valves.

Most stores (dealers) have access to Manheim. HAve your dealer show you what your car would sell for at auction.

NO CAR WILL BE IN MINT/EXCELLENT condition.

Manheim uses above average, average and rough

    MOST cars fall into average.

    GOOD LUCK
