Which Aveo is better looking? The American Aveo or the Oversea Aveo? (posted on Aug 23)

I like the grill of the Chevy. I have a 07 Aveo 5. I like the new ones, but not crazy how headlights shoot up to a point. Going foor the Fit look I guess.
  • andy_handy_h Member Posts: 49
Well, you are one of the very rare ones. A lot of people hate the huge front grill on the American Aveo. However, I have report that the front license will be in the center of the huge grill making the front look much better.

I hope you replaced the windshield by now. BUT most insurance companies will replace it for FREE. It is a safety issue. IF it gets big enough, it could blow in on you as you drive, thus it is a BIG safety issue. I have State Farm insurance. God knows it costs enough to ensure even this little car. BUT I have had 4 cracked windshields on 4 different cars/trucks, from pebbles hitting it, and the crack gets bigger and longer. They replace it for free. No deductable either,....at least in Fla. it is considered a safety issue, so they must replace it for free! I think it is a state law. Do you have that in your policy or in your state? And I dont have to wait for a long crack to develop. Just a tiny pinhole hit, and I can get it replaced. Those things cost like $300 or more...dont they?

A large national newspaper would like to speak with consumers who decided to downsize their vehicle. The vehicle size does not matter, as long as its smaller than your previous vehicle. If you have switched to a smaller vehicle, please respond to ctalati@edmunds.com with your daytime contact information no later than September 15.

My Aveo thermostat (same as Daewoo Lanos and some Suzuky Swift) housing also broke apart. Composite plastic which is the material is made off might be strong enough, but since the housing is made in two parts, so part maker can install the thermostat and gasket, this parts break apart, because they are put together not even with glue, but by heat.
When the engine moves, or the radiator moves because it is attached to the body, the housing will break. If an engine mount is in bad shape, the problem will occur more often.
The solution is to get a metallic housing that has been available for a long time. In fact GM decided to use the plastic one, because it is cheaper, but leaves the driver exposed to a failure that can go undetected since the temperature sender will not send a proper reading, showing a lower temperature, since the sender requires coolant to properly read, so the only hint to this problem could be steam coming off the engine or a spill, but sometimes this is hard to see. If this happens, blowing the gasket or seizing the engine is a possible scenario.
Anyway. I got tired of this problem after a second housing broke on me. Now, with the metal housing I think I solved the problem. It was more expensive, in fact dealerships wanted 90 dollars for it, but I found it on Ebay for 70, so it wasn't that bad.
Another thing that I wanted to talk about is the timing belt and the water pump. The engine on the Aveo was designed for high compression, but because of space and engine size designer was force to reduce the size of the compression chamber and to install 4 valves per piston, which is fine, excepting for the use of a timing belt instead of a timing chain, which is acceptable, excepting that sometimes the belt breaks and then the pistons, that are very close to the valves, end up hitting them and getting bend, and this actually means a very expensive repair.
The type of engine is widely known as an interference engine, and it is commonly used in the car industry, but some car makers install good quality components that will last 100 K or even more.
Some people will say that is way you have a preventive maintenance schedule, which is true, but there are a lot of things that could drive the timing belt to fail prematurely, such as oil, dirt, water and poor quality rubber on the belt itself. On top of that, preventive replacement of timing belt is not precisely cheap, since belt is more or less hard to replace.
To make things worst, the engine design makes the timing belt to drive the coolant or water pump, so if the water pump seizes, then the belt will get destroyed, hence the engine will as well.
To top that, tensioner and idler pulley are made also in plastic and bearings are short lasting, so they could also seize, and then engine will also get destroyed.

How old is your Aveo? Or how many miles do you have on it...that you have had to replace the thermostat already? I often read in older post...that people replace their water pump at the same time they replace the timing belt, to save money and once the engine is 'opened' to replace the belt,...it is easier to replace the water pump at the same time, and it saves a lot of money I am told,...at the mileage that the manual says to replace the belt. Did you do that to already?<img src="

Well, the other Aveo version oversea, will be the Pontiac G3. It does have a cheesy smiley face. The Aveo face is better and is more aggressive.
  • poncho167poncho167 Member Posts: 1,178
That G3 will likely be in Pontiac dealers next year from what I have read. It only makes sense in helping bring that divisions mileage up and it wouldn't cost them that much more when they import it.

Surprised to find an Aveo forum!! There are VERY few of them here in Georgia, at least outside Atlanta. But I just got back from a visit home with my wife for several weeks, to Palermo, Sicily. A friend of mine from Virgina whose job means he LIVES on planes used miles to come over for a week, and we borrowed my father-in-law's 2007 hatch Aveo (called a Chevrolet Kalos in '07, they kept the old Daewoo name until this year) for a 4 day trip around the whole island. It is a 1.2 liter GPL model, uses compressed gas! Switches back and forth to gasoline while driving with a little switch, and the tank fits in the spare well, which means the spare is in a cover, taking up (scarce) luggage space. But GPL is 1/2 the cost of gasoline (they call gas benzina) and the milage is about the same. We ran in the 70-80 mph (interstate speed limit is 130 kph, about 83 mph) range, and the car did a great job. We didn't find too much noise, and there is constant strong wind on the central rolling plains of Sicily. I drive a Towncar 350+ miles round trip to consulting job each week, and don't think I'd want one here because passing on Georgia 2-lane hiways would be hairy. (I don't drive the Towncar in town - ironic - have an old 240D Merc for that which gets 27 mpg in town). And for all you guys talking about small cars, the Aveo is my parents-in-law's BIG Chevrolet! Their other car is a Chevrolet Matiz - actually more fun than the Aveo, but not a highway car really . If anyone is interested, you can probably google it and find Chevy in Italy with pics and so on, though might be in Italian you know.

Hi there: has anyone else had issues with their check engine light coming on again and again and again? I purchased my 2008 Aveo 5 2 weeks ago. I left the dealership and on my way home the CE light came on. I read the manual and followed the emission suggestions (check the gas cap, better gas, weight distribution, etc.) to no avail. I took the car in and they told me that there was excess carbon in the muffler so they cleaned it and the car is fine now. So yesterday, just 1 week after receiving my car back from the dealer, on came the CE light again. Its at the dealership now (again). Anyone else experience this? Thanks! :confuse:
  • yngwieyngwie Member Posts: 16
Hey ther! I've never had a CE light issue on my 07m Aveo 5.Only problem Iam occasionally having is the damn wiper blades come on without warning. haven't had the time to get it checked yet!
  • poncho167poncho167 Member Posts: 1,178
Sounds like it could be the exhaust oxygen sensor. See the other most recent engine problem posts/
  • junymomjunymom Member Posts: 2
Actually, it seems that the intake manifold was improperly built at the factory preventing the entire emissions system from properly working. Chevy is replacing the intake manifold as well as the EGR valve so the problem should go away completely. Thanks for the help though! :)

My 2006 Aveo has 50K and has no problem. What's your year, mileage, and luck?
  • yngwieyngwie Member Posts: 16
My 2007 only has 15,000.So far only problem was my wipers would come on at will. I had to remove fuse to stop them. The dealer(Armen Chevy in Ardmore Pa.) fixed the problem no charge as it was a warrenty job. They were great.I driveabout 300 miles a week and love this car!
  • grace4evergrace4ever Member Posts: 30
I have 2007 Aveo hatchback and have approx. 10,000 miles on it. I have had no problems except for a minor problem of the passenger air bag light not going off when I had a passenger. I took it to dealer and he fixed at no charge and has been perfect ever since. Other than that, I love this car. It handles great, good gas mileage and comfortable (even for my 6'4" husband). No complaints so far.
  • sandyriversandyriver Member Posts: 16
I purchased a used '06 Pontiac Wave (which is the twin of Aveo, sold only in Canada). The car drives well, no problems so far. Mileage is not great, but acceptable.

I noticed something after the weather started cooling down. It seems to take forever to warm up in cold mornings. It blows cold air for over 5 minutes before it starts to warm up. Heating works fine after that point. It's tolerable now, but I expect it to be a bigger issue as the weather turns colder.

I'll have it looked up as a part of warranty. Has anyone else faced a similar issue?

    - sriver.
  • andy_handy_h Member Posts: 49
5 minutes! This car is an internal combustion engine car. 5 minutes is way too long. Did you turn the knob all the way red?
  • sandyriversandyriver Member Posts: 16
    Thanks andy_h.

Yes, it was set to the warmest. I haven't driven it much in real cold weather so far. We haven't had many cold days so far. It warmed up in under 2 minutes today, a relatively warm day (well above freezing).

I'll wait for a few cold days to see if it's as bad as I saw a few times, and then take it to a dealership.

i found out recently the low engine coolant affects the car heating. once i topped it up the heater worked better. somehow the engine coolant is tied in with the heater, i would have thought it would be connected to the air conditioner but it isnt. but then i am no mechanic.

Does anyone else have a problem with their windshield being all scratched up from their wiper blades? Mine started to get a scratch pattern only a month after being bought, brand new! I have never had this much scratching on a windshield on any car or truck ever! Is it just mine? Or is this an Aveo issue? I polish it like 2 times a year to try and get rid of some of the scratches, and the 'road grime' and water spots, with a very fine polishing powder that is meant for this purpose. Of course I can't do it as well as maybe a professional company. I replace the wiper blades frequently and use a lot of wiper fluid to keep it wet when i use them. But it seems to be VERY scratched. Anyone else? Or am I being to picky?
  • andy_handy_h Member Posts: 49
    Sandy,

Turn the knob all the way red, turn the fan on full, and kick the rpm up a few times. That should warm your car real quick.

Is Chevy going to compete with the sub 10K Nissan or does GM want to gift wrap it for the Japanese ?

That versa has nothing, no ac, no power windows, etc.
  • poncho167poncho167 Member Posts: 1,178
Yes, I read that it is a bare bones car with a different grade interior. The lack of radio is the most surprising feature. How much would it cost them for a radio, maybe $10 or so. How about putting at least an AM radio in it like basic cars used to have.
  • yngwieyngwie Member Posts: 16
    Hey Folks,
I am going to replace the stock front door speakers with a pair of pioneer 4" speakers. Crutchfield says they fit. How hard is it to get the front door panel off? I did the rear speakers with pioneer 4by 6's and they fit the opening fine I just had to screw the things into the plastic as not all holes matched up right.

    Neither does the $12,000 Aveo...
  • poncho167poncho167 Member Posts: 1,178
The Aveo or any other car as a value edition comes with a radio standard.
  • merckxmerckx Member Posts: 565
I think the Aveo5 is a nice looking car,but radio or not,it's not worth $2,000 more than a stripped Versa.

I suspect this is an example of GM "old think"...since gas had shot up,raise the price of the gas sippers.....Meanwhile, Nissan finds a way to lower a Versa by $3,000....No matter how stripped this $10,000 Versa may be,it still is a great value...
  • aveo5aveo5 Member Posts: 8
GM is alot like Microsoft, they can't turn on a dime - in a few model years we'll see GM's answer to the 10K Versa (201x ?) ;)
  • poncho167poncho167 Member Posts: 1,178
They used to have a value model priced at $9,900 or something like that. The Hyundai is the least expensive now.
  • alsehendoalsehendo Member Posts: 4
Well I bought one, 2007, and drove many many miles in the two years--70K

You have to change timing belt @ only 60,000--$400 from dealer cost me $40 for Gates belt & 2 hr work. If you don't no motor warranty on belt break and it's an interference motor.

Cooling fan shroud wears through radiator you need to add washers and padding if you don't $600 dealer fix after it fails and it will ! I got after market radiator for $124

Went through 2 front wheel bearings--100,000 warranty covered both.

If you air bag light comes on its the side air bag plugs under the seat wiggling loose. Push them together light will clear it self no need for scanner to clear codes.

The dealers put GM power steering fluid in and it will leak and make noise some day. They were supposed to use Dextron VI--works much better. You can't mix them.

Seats are made for 100 pounders will rip if your 200 plus.

Stock tires mega suck, you wont believe how much quieter and smoother it drives on $500 worth of tires

It drives as nice as it did when new and I don't think it's all that bad, realizing it's not a VW Golf but dose not cost $16,000 ether. A little buzzy @ high speeds 75+

    I got 36+ mpg on hwy 65-70

Use KN oil filters with the 1 inch wrench thing on the end. They are easy to change from top. Run 5-30 Mobile one synthetic. Starts great @ -20 F

There is a cabin filter that filters the air coming out the heater blower motor under the glove box which just pops off--change it. Google for one $46 from GM.

Car is very easy to work on all kinds of room under the hood @ other areas.

Hopefully I'll get another 70K out of it with little trouble.

It's hard to say. There are three versions of this car with one being SUV like. I believe this is a smaller car in the micro car size.
  • andy_handy_h Member Posts: 49
That car (the Spark) looks small, like a 4-door Smart car, with no trunk space. I like my roomy Aveo hatchback with adaquate trunk space.

The Versa hatchback loaded, costs more than the Aveo hatchback, and the Aveo has a moonroof.
  • aveo5aveo5 Member Posts: 8
The Spark is supposedly a hatchback, so yes no trunk space (grin) - the Aveo has a (OEM or aftermarket) moonroof (big grin) ?

I have a 2004 Chevy Aveo Hatchback. Today my temperature gauge stopped working and there was no heat blowing either. I live in Calgary, and it was appx. -22C today, but it normally takes about 10min for the car to heat up. After driving for 45min today, I still had no heat. I am clueless about cars - Anybody got any suggestions as to what I might need to look into? I don't want to get ripped off by the dealership.
  • nikkipnikkip Member Posts: 3
check that your engine coolant is topped up. i have a 2007 aveo5 hatchback and had heating problems, and finally noticed the temp gauge had shifted. i checked the engine coolant level and found it below 'min'. i topped it up with the prescribed 'dex cool' (50% water/etc) and heater has worked great since. mechanic says the engine coolant system is more tied in with the heating system than the air conditioning. strange 2 me but i'm no mechanic. had the mechanic check the engine coolant system with no pressure problems? now i just check/top it everytime i fill it up. wondered how it uses/loses the coolant till i noticed a lot of cars in traffic pour lots of 'water'/liquid out their tailpipes...guess this is where it's going..other than a few other problems covered by warranty i am continuing to enjoy the car...
  • grace4evergrace4ever Member Posts: 30
I had the very same problem. Heat did not work and I noticed the car was running a little on the hot side so I checked by coolant. It was low and I had to add some to get it up to the right level. I check it more often now and found that I have to add some about once every 2-3 months. I don't know if it evaporates or if it goes out the tailpipe like you said but adding a little when it gets low seems to solve the issue. Other than that, no problems and love my car. BTW, I have a 2007 hatchback and LOVE IT (so far).
  • lynet_roblynet_rob Member Posts: 4
Thanks for your responses. I will start with a coolant check/top up and go from there. Hopefully that solves my problem. The car is not running hot...I don't think -> cause the gauge does not move, so, can't really tell. lol.
I will write back and give some feedback as soon as I give that a shot.

Sorry this has nothing to do with your post, but I seen in another post you offered to sell your stock radio to someone. If its a double din let me know at bartlett608@yahoo.com thanks.
  • andy_handy_h Member Posts: 49
I am surprised that you did not know the Aveo has an OEM moonroof.
  • lynet_roblynet_rob Member Posts: 4
Thanks for your suggestion on simply adding some coolant. The coolant was slightly below the min. level, The mechanic said that sometimes a air-bubble can get into the systems and cause it to malfunction. He added the coolant, and revved the engine with the lid off the coolant reservoir for about 5min. And there we go > heat! Awesome really....considering it has been -38C here the last few days. Having no heat really wasn't an option.

We chose to buy this car for our daughter to use over the next 5 years. Own a 5 year old Honda, Altima and 3 year old Corolla but decided to keep the profits in the US, even if this one was made in Korea. New ones will be made in Canada and Mexico, and I would rather support those economies. I'm much more interested in where things are made now.
  • poncho167poncho167 Member Posts: 1,178
I know what you mean. The Aveo may not be an American made car but the company that sells it stands to profit and that is an American company, unlike Toyota where they take their money and bank it back home in Japan.

It's interesting of the millions of American citizens who never think of who they support when they purchase a high dollar item like a car. That is why they say especially the new generation of people only care about themselves, etc.

I have a 2009 Aveo5 2LT. Is there a way to disable the horn honk when locking the doors with the keyless remote? This is really annoying. Just the lights flashing like my Yaris does is just fine. Thanks.
