Mercedes-Benz plans to build special high-performance AMG editions of virtually all of its future vehicles, including its upcoming CLS-class four-door "coupe."
The first production versions of the mid-range car -- the six-cylinder CLS 350 and the eight-cylinder CLS 500 -- were unveiled last month at the Geneva auto show. The CLS-class goes on sale later this year in Europe, and should reach U.S. dealers in early 2005.
But Mercedes has an even more potent variant waiting in the wings. The future CLS 65 AMG, which is due as a 2006 model, will feature an AMG-tuned, twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V-12 engine that delivers 612 horsepower and 737 foot-pounds of torque.
The AMG edition likely will be priced from $80,000-$90,000.

The concept of a four-door coupe didn't initially appeal to us, but you have to admit that in action at the Nurburgring, the Mercedes-Benz CLS looks stunning. Especially in full AMG trim: this is the CLS 65 AMG. Fitted with the same engine as the CL 65 AMG - a 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12 delivering 612bhp, 738lb ft of torque and sub-4.5 second 0-60mph acceleration - and AMG Speedshift five-speed auto transmission, it's likely to be one of the ultimate super-coupe purchases of the next few years. Even if it does have two doors too many.

The twin exhaust pipe pairs indicate that this hot AMG-tuned version packs a supercharged 5.5-litre V8 under the bonnet. The one you see here is the short-wheelbase five-seater, though a seven-seat LWB version will beef up the range. Suspension has been lowered for testing on the Nurburgring here.

What I'm waiting for is the next generation of naturally aspirated V8s. The CLS500 that will come here in the spring of 2005 will have a completely new V8. The current 3-valve 5.0L V8 is just a launch engine for the first year's production for the rest of the world. The 2006 CLS for the U.S. market will have at least 340hp from a new 4.5-4.7L V8. DOHC, direct-injection, 4 valves per cylinder, you know like the 1990-1997 V8s were, but of a totally new (superior) design.

Likewise the CLS55 AMG with the current SC 5.5L V8 is a stopgap car because for 2007 an all-new AMG V8 will be present in the current SL55, E55 and in the next generation S/CL cars. The next ML (May 2005) and R-Class (Nov 2005)will all have a version of this engine also.

The next generation AMG V8 is a 6.3L naturally-aspirated monster with somewhere between 500 and 600hp (depending on the model and source of the info). Also direct-injection, 32V, DOHC and all the other little tricks just introduced on the 2005 SLK350's 3.5L V6. All the "55" cars will become "63" models matching the spirit and heritage of the old 300SEL 6.3 model of yore. How neat.

The CLK55 and next generation C55 are speculated to get a new 5.5L version of the above motor with 420hp.

I have yet to be able to see the CLS in person. They didn't have one at Detroit or Chicago this year.

Because of price I doubt they'll be a CLS65. That would make the S55 pointless because they'd be very close in price. Strangely there is no talk of importing the S65 here.

Well it is now official. The CLS55 AMG has been revealed. Same drivetrain as the E55 AMG. Strangely though the CLS55 doesn't seem to have much in the way of body kit like other AMG cars.

I think I like this newest, most unusual Mercedes-Benz:

The CLK DTM AMG! Sadly, this one won't sold here. Only 100 copies to be made. It runs a 582hp version of the SLR's Supercharged 5.5L V8.

It doesn't look like the U.S. market will get this one either:

The S65 AMG, absolutely wicked. The SL65 and CL65 go on sale in August, no mention of the S65.

When you look at MB's new styling direction compared to BMW's . . . sigh.

How can MB get it so right and Bungle get it so wrong?
  • merc1merc1 Member Posts: 6,081
I know right. Please don't jinx it though, a new S-Class is coming and it doesn't look like it will continue the tradition of good looking MB design.
