Obvious, there must be some sort of an attraction and safe feeling that it gives me if this is my second Impala with ON STAR. I keep on renewing the basic S & S plan after the intial 12 month free-bee and honestly I have never used it... I just look to see that my little green light is on and that it's working... Silly huh !!!
Especially when you see what the rates are here....
- Safe @ Sound plan $ 289.00 ($24.95/month)
- Directions & Connections $ 579.00 ($48.95/month)
- $14.99 for 30 minutes & $19.99 for 100 minutes
On day,I may see what the diagnostics report looks like...
Frank
Actually, your On Star battery is a quite small and it's located in the trunk along with all your other On Star stuff..The only reason i know , is that when I first picked up my New Impala I didn't know that it had been sitting around at the dealership for quite a while and they let the regular battery die..!! Well , do you know what happens..?? I didn't.. The On Star technician said that it fries the On Star battery and there is no recharging it ...it has to be replaced and it was under warrantee...!!
H ope this helps..
Frank
At my dealership, their mechanics do not touch the On Star stuff..When necessary, they call-in an auto electronics technian that specializes in On Star repairs .It took all of 2-3 minutes to change batteries...It didn't hurt at all !!
Frank
From what I understand, OnStar does not actively monitor the location of all vehicles on the network. The tracking feature only activates when you contact OnStar for some reason. When you are not in contact with OnStar, they have no idea where you are.
When my initial year of service comes up for renewal in July, I will keep going with Safe and Sound. For $199 it is an added level of safety.
The monthly email is nice...I like to think of it as my car sending me an email.
I always keep minutes loaded with OnStar as a backup to my cell phone. The 100 minutes plan works well.
All-in-all I find OnStar to be a nice feature.
I feel that it is really nice to have, but a tad bit overpriced per month, that is until you are driving home late one night, you hit an icy patch and skid off the road and into a ditch.
It's nice to know that by the touch of one little button they will know exactly where you are and send help, or, if your airbags deploy they are notified automatically and help is dispatched.
With the new '07's you get one Directions & Connections for free. I used mine while trying to find a place in Dallas that I'd never been. It worked flawlessly and it had milage to the next turn and it even had arrows (in the radio display) showing which directio the next turn will be. Worth the $$$ they want, doubtful, but you can buy it one trip at a time if necessary.
My advise... buy a Garmin.
As for the phone, I'm sure that it works better than my little handheld cell, but there are areas in this country where no cell works... period. I'll keep in touch with my Yaesu, thank you.
Russ
They advertise that the OnStar phone has superior range to any conventional cell phone but I never go anywhere remote enough and need to make a call to have tested them both out.
This is absolutely the WORST business practice I've ever experienced and I will NEVER make a purchase through gmpartsdirect.com again. I have written them about my displeasure but have yet to receive a reply (a week later). Also, strangely enough, when you click the contact us button, you are immediately taken to their FAQ page which has, as its first item, an explanation of their shipping charges. I'm guessing they get a lot of "inquiries" on the subject.
No hard feelings, Frank. I just wanted to pass along my experience with the site.
I've also e-mailed them maybe 4 or 5 times requesting GM part numbers for my Impala and they have responded almost immediately. I have no ties with them , I live up in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and thought i would take a chance on them. For me, their prices were almost half of what my dealer wanted...So I went for it...
Yes Thanks...Again, My appologies..I hope no hard feelings !! :confuse:

$210.00. Tires only had 200 miles on them...like new.
This was a great , deal for me!!
As for buying things online, I have excellent experiences with several companies. So much so, that I only go to the stores when I need to actually try something on or have no prior experience with the product.
My "Spidey" sense was going off when I was reading those disclaimers but figured they were fair based on Frank's experience. No biggie...just as long as these refills are as good as the originals, I'll be alright.
Tire Replacements....$299.99
Wheel Repairs ......$399.99
Road side assistance to install a tire or wheel related problem................$50.00
They say the only thing I need to do is after I have any tire or wheel problem , is take the receipt to the dealer where I purchased the vehicle and they file the claim for me or call an 800 number direct and they will file it. Well, It's for free for 2 years so I can't go wrong by throwing it in my glove box. Anyone else have this or hear about it? Between Onstar, my warranty and this thing I'm pretty well covered.. .....p.s I'm enjoying all the posts and feedback from you guys....thanks for everything!
Nope...I haven't heard a word about this one up here in my neck of the woods. Strange, usually GM US and GM Canada are very similar in their programs etc.. Thanks, I'll have to look into this one...!! Interestingly though, I did go through GMAC for my Impala, but I wonder if it was because I decided to put it on the GM 4 year (Smart)Lease (1.9 % )and not the actual financing program ...???. I don't know ?
'Ya, I'm also enjoying all the info and feedback here...there's a wealth of experience and knowledge that's absolutely invaluable here...!!
And, noticeably it seems that this particular forum (Chev Impala 2006+)is a safe place to just express and share...There is one particular forum on another page that get's alittle out of hand with the disagreements with all the sniping and name calling....I appreciate you guys....!!!!
Talk later...
Frank
Any experience/input/suggestions....??!!
Thanks as always.
Frank
"06 now) for 10 bucks or so. Hey, put the duals on there, throw the SS badges on your car, and your ready to go!! BTW, if you go to the Magnaflow web-site they have a 2006 SS with the Magnaflow exhaust on it . It's on a video with sound......be careful not to have your volume to high, you'll bust the Monitor screen!!
Like Frank said a couple posts ago, this forum is awesome in how the information gets spread around.
Good day, all,
Ron
Thanks for being sensitive.... I do understand that while my V-6 may sound better, there is no way it will compare to an SS. Hey c47 thanks for your input also re: CAT-BACKS..
Did you notice any difference ( good or bad ) in bottom or top end perforfance at all.??
Thanks
Frank
Good luck....
Frank
Thanks
Frank
Just when you think they are fixed and everthing is ok,
after a time they stat to loose range or stop working or nasty messages all of a sudden appear on your message center..
Be carefull and Good luck...!!

I have a black on black '06 LTZ. I ONLY use Zaino on my cars and have for about 6 years with fantastic results. Even the service guys comment on the lack of swirls etc on my cars. That's particularly hard to achieve on GM black paint! NOTHING but Zaino and 100% white cotton towels ever touch the finish on my car (well...other than a soft-bristled snow brush when I don't have any choice). In the winter I use a touchfree carwash.
Zaino requires a bit of extra work for the first application, but once it's on it lasts and lasts and lasts. And no swirls or haze marks!
Good luck!
Brad
Many Thanks for your input and for sharing your experience....
This is very helpful!! Personally, I have stayed away from Zaino because of some the reports.... I've read that while it's a very good quality wax, it can be extremely difficult to get off. I don't mind a good work-out now and then, but I don't want it to be impossible to remove.. So thanks for the info..I'll try it.. Ya, soft-bristled brush and absolutely touch free wash in winter for me also !!
You may want to try some of the new micro fiber towels and see how you like them. I made the change recently from using soft cotton baby diapers. They are very soft and great when dry and also very absorbant for removing water.I even gave up my chamois...!!
Thanks Again
Frank
Go for it...Bryan speaks with great wisdom in the previous post..
But, take your time and take all the test drives you want...remember you are in the drivers seat and in control here, not them.
I'm sure that everything will be fine and work out for you.
Let us know how you make out ....Welcome to the family !!
