The Sylvania Silver Star bulbs which a couple of us use here are highly rated and good quality bulb. The problem is they only last about a year which is unacceptable enough but after talking to a service tech I found that some bulbs other then the OEM ones last as short as 2 months. Its just a side effect of using bulbs that don't come with the vehicle.
Further when I had to replace the first bulb to go, I could have gotten a new oem bulb put in free of charge of labor and material cost when they didn't know it was a diff blub then oem in there that went. I dont know if they would have noticed and cared but either way I was like no I already got a new SSS H7 bulb so just put that in cus otherwise i would have oem on one side and the whiter brighter bulb on the other side.
So its annoying that because they dont have a xenon option I've had to get 2 sets of better bulbs now and pay to have them put in because its not so easy to do yourself on the B9. Plus when the first one went i thought it might be a fluke and had no way of knowing when the other would go so I didn't get a 2 pack so now had to pay more to get 1 ea. just a month or 2 apart.
Bottom line is, that the day time running lights are causing these bulbs to go out sooner. Its great that the OEM ones seem to have a longer life even with teh dtr's but I'd rather have the better bulbs in and disable the dtrl's. I don't need them or see the point on a bright sunny day having dtrl's on. I see that like 75% or more of cars do not have them on and regardless I just dont need or want them.
I may ask the service dept. if they can disable them but I have a feeling they will say they are not allowed to.
I know we have talked about it in here and I think someone figured a way to do it with the added benefit that the dvd plays on front screen while driving (for front passenger seat that cant' see the rear dvd screen)
I have seen myself that pressing down the parking brake even a little turns off the dtrl's but it wont stay until you get it locked in at least one click which i'm worried engages the parking brake it self.
I could not feel or see any button that the parking brake lever presses just for the dtrl's to go off without engaging the parking brake.
I will search the thread for when we talked about that but if anyone can point me directly, remembers or has new info on disabling the dtrl's please let us all know as this is going to be an issue for anyone that wants to put better bulbs in the headlights and have them last longer.
In looking feeling around by the parking brake real quick I was not able to find this button but with further investigation I should be able to if someone else was. Question is how to keep the button depressed without the parking brake lever down.
I just want the dtrl's off so I can prolong my headlight bulbs for more then 10 mo's or however short they lasted last time because of the dtrl's. I don't care that the parking brake light will be on as long as the parking brake really isn't engaged I will know and feel when it is really on or not.
besides having the parking brake light on is worth disabling the dtrl's not to mention dvd on front screen (for front seat passenger who can't see rear screen, and I repeat this part everytime so someone doesnt' feel the need to yell at me and say how that is dangeroud and blah blah)
So where is the button that the parking brake presses and do you keep it permanently pressed? tape or something?
i want these damn dtrl's off especially when I have a headlight out so ppl dont need to see that I do when i'm driving around in the bright day and dont need them on anyway. ugh
You guys are good.
I found the sites.
Keep me in mind if you hear of a dealer offering a good deal.
I prefer close to IL, for convernience, but I can go anywhere if the dollar is right.
I am in Central IL, but have gone to Chicago to purchase cars.
They are more competitive.
I am eager to drive and hopefully buy the 07.
I held off on a great deal for the 06, but wanted the back-up screen.
The memory will be nice along with the other updates.
Can't beleive we are talking abut a car.
Kinda sounds like a mom ready to give birth!!!
LOL
Again, thanks
Belva
Has anyone found out if the $2000 rebate applies to the 2007 Triebca?
Thanks
Belva
they're incredible.
I've installed quite a few accessories and to be honest the instructions aren't the best. But the only real consequence is that it takes me more time. As long as they agree to a fixed price, go for it.
I bet they spend 3 hours on yours, and then when they get good at it they'll be able to install it in half the time for others. You still get your money's worth, though.

Thanks.
I should almost not respond to this but I just find it annoying that everytime anyone talks about disabling something that should be their choice and preference someone else has to make some exagerated sarcastic remark about safety.
I am only looking to disable the daytime running lights as many others are, and for mostly to preserve the headlight bulbs that burn out much quicker because of them. There is no reason for dtrl's on a bright sunny day. On a cloudy day or what have you, you can turn on the parking lights which includes the rear lights that the dtrls dont.
If depressing the parking brake button also allows the dvd to play on front screen while driving that is fine with me. As I say in parenthesis everytime I mention that , that it would be for the front passenger who can't see the rear screen, to not give ppl like you the chance to jump down my throat about safety. I can drive with eyes on the road and just listen without being distracted by the screen. Thats like saying the Nav is distracting.
As far as the parking brake button disabling VDC, I dont think anyone was sure of that and I think the light/symbol indicating that was off would come on.
I don't see why you felt the need to say i should just go ahead and remove the airbags and seatbelts just because I want to disable dtrl's so i dont have to get new bulbs every 10 months.
I dont know why you changed the topic to back of video screen, or what that means but...
Next time, maybe if have nothing helpful to add or suggestions etc. and rather just exagerated sarcasted remarks in the form of a scolding you should keep it to yourself.
Another guy said the pricing went up and would be more expensive then the 06. Any truth to that on price? Regardless if they are already selling close to, at, and in some cases already even below invoice that is great and I am still very pissed at my dealer that I paid only 1000 under MSRP which was only given to me because of a situation in delay in getting the vehicle etc.
NOt to mention the fact that the dealer gave up on locating one with the color and options I wanted and then when I found one at a dealer further away, and had my dealer call, the other dealer refused to trade it to them. Only after I called up that other dealer and talked them into cooperating with my dealer did they do it. So essential I'm the one who not only located the vehicle but made the trade happen giving my local dealer the sale.
Still they didn't acknowledge this at all though and still used it against me that they knew I wanted a particular colors (ext. and int.) and options. Stupidly I agreed to the price at the time after trying to get it down and they woudn't budge, and I felt bad to walk out after they had to retrieve the car from 2 hrs away , as well my wife and mother were with me so I didn't have the heart to walk out on everyone.
So complaining about the overcharging after the agreement didn't help much cus they already got my money and htey just threw me barely a bone with a few cheap accessories for free, though I bought a few others in addition and paid for labor on all them so they still got more money. And what little they gave was only after threatening to take it elsewhere for service. I took it there anyway everytime after that since they showed me some effort and they still owe me a portable XM2go antenna installed by a local outfit. I was supposed to get that like 6 mo ago or more so i can see them forgetting or complaining about it but I will remind the one owner/manager and even show him an email if i have to.
And I will have to mention how when I went to them to change a headlight bulb a couple months ago they charged me though last week when i had to change the other and they said they didn't have time, i went to another dealership who was nice as could be and did it for free. I think that alone should earn my future service business.
With pricing available on the 07 at or below invoice I really wonder how i could make out on selling my 06 and geting 07. Any dealer that gave me a great at or below invoice price isn't going to give me a great trade in price on my 06, but if i sell to my dealer friend, based on what I paid for it, what I added etc. I should be able to get a good price.
Its just I can't see choosing the dvd player this time around as I only took it because I had to as the only one i could find with the colors and other options i wanted ended up having the dvd player which worked out cus I use the aux audio iputs every day. But now that you can get that input up front without dvd i would have no reason/exuse to get dvd and now that you can get limited with leather without the 3rd row i would have no reason to get that.
So essentially in getting the 07 I would most likely lose 3rd row and dvd that i have in my 06. Though i never use 3rd row and might like the reduced weight without it, i figure its nice to have if it ever comes in handy and good for resell value. So I am hesitant to get sell 06 for an 07
I may just wait and see how the Audi Q7 does with Consumer Reports. Once I saw that they made it with some lower fuel consumption technology (though not a hybrid as was originally planned at one point and now canned i think) that interested me as well as the V6 model coming out in the fall which gets 280 hp (30 more hten the Tribeca). I would just worry that like the Touareg the V6 would be too sluggish and not enough power for the heavy vehicle and the v8 is too expensive and fuel thirsty which made the Toareg have no reall good enging option. The Q7 is slight larger then the Touareg too, but i think the 3.6L V6 in the Q7 is more powerful then the Touaregs V6 engine?
Any Special Edition 07 B9's around yet? I just want to see the grille in person and get one for my 06 asap.
The new dealership i went to told me that they have a customer that gets parts from Cobb tunning all the time for a legacy sedan that they install for him. I wonder I one could order the parts neccesary to supercharge the B9 from Cobb and have dealer put it in. And i figure if this dealer is familiar with Cobb tunning parts for another model that they could do it for the B9.
So, any Subaru parts dealers websites offering the grill yet? What about the European white/clear Tribeca tail lights. I'm home those are just a matter of time as well.

it says:
Blacked-out grill (optional wire mesh grill on SE model)
making it seem like there will be a black version of the current grill in addition to the SE wire mesh grille which looks kind of chromish. Ideal to me would be the mesh grill in black i think.
I would def get NAV again so its nice the backup cam is standard with that. Wouldn't want/need the chrome wheels but worth getting the SE package for the mesh grille and integrated XM. Is the integrated XM available as an option on other models? its unclear. If it is and you can get the grille on other models then there seems no reason to get the SE package unless its cheaper then getting the XM and grill separate.
These things interest me as well:
Wider rear view mirror
Memory Driver's seat on Limiteds
Roll-Over Sensor pre-deploys side-curtain airbags if a roll-over is detected
Brake Assist improves response by analyzing foot pressure on brake pedal
Re-tuned Suspension struts and rear stabilizer bar, adjusted for smoother ride
Remote Starter, pre-wired
Cargo cover, retractable (almost woth it alone to get the 07)

Note: the mesh grill is available
as a part and can be dealer installed,
part #J101SXA150. It also fits 2006 models
Is it available now?

All '07 models come pre-wired for XM radio. The XM radio kit itself is $445 MSRP ($334 invoice), plus the monthly subscription. The XM can be added to any '07 B9 Tribeca, not just the SE. So if you didn't care for the chrome wheels, you could add the XM and mesh grille to an '07 for a little over $900 bucks, plus any labor, whereas the SE package would run you anywhere from $1300-$2000, depending on the deal you could get.
Why are you pissed at the dealer? It is his job to get the highest possible price. If you did not like the price - you should have walked and gone else where. Or maybe you did not do your homework - in either case go stand in front of a mirror and you will find the problem.
The balance between personal preference and safety is interesting and, I believe, worthy of discussion. The obvious safest approach is to lock your car in your garage and never drive it. Yet, in the real world, some compromises must be made so it's fascinating to see where the point of compromise lies.
In this context, my question about removing airbags and seatbelts was an attempt to find that point. My personal compromise point involves buying a vehicle with advanced safety features (the B9 Tribeca) and driving in what I hope is a prudent and reasonable manner.
Subaru includes many safety features in the design of the B9 Tribeca. Some, like daytime running lights have a primary function of protecting pedestrians and occupants of other vehicles. Others, like the airbags, primarily protect the driver and passengers of that vehicle. Features like VDC and lockout of dashboard video while the vehicle is in motion fall somewhere in the middle -- they could save your life or someone else's.
I believe it's irresponsible to intentionally disable a feature that protects the safety of others in order to indulge personal preferences. Others may disagree. Addressing that concern with a facetious question may not have been the best approach.
Incidentally, the message topic was (and still is) inherited from the message to which I responded. The discussion appears to have drifted somewhat.
I'll bet they can. With the supercharged engine, your B9 should be a real 'x5killer'. Let us know how it works out.

Great find Jeff!
also thanks for clarifying that all 07's come prewired for XM and informing us what the kit costs. If it really does cost less for both the XM kit and the grill then what the SE edition costs extra, that is a great option for those that dont want the chrome wheels and just purchase the other 2 things (grill and XM) separately.
I'm not going to go to the trouble and expense of selling my 06 and getting an 07 at this point so I'm just going to get the grill and prob get the new portable Pioneer XM to go unit. (I do wish there was a way to get the 07 cargo cover though, they've now made puddle lights possible when previous it was a port installed option, why can't they make the cargo cover possible for 06)
As far as the price of the grill, $569 seems decent as the only other place I can find it shows a supposed $763 MSRP and their price is $639

2nd your using the VDC as your point of proof but you have no proof that the VDC is disabled when you activate the Emergency Brake electric button (without actually using the emergency brake).
I am just saying you have a better chance of proving your side of the discussion with Facts not hearsay and pulling in emotional examples that do not even directly apply to your argument ...
Regarding VDC (and ABS, for that matter), it's difficult to know just what gets disabled when the parking brake button is depressed. The owner's manual doesn't get into that level of detail. I suppose a person could depress the button and drive the vehicle in an empty, ice-covered parking lot (not many of them in my neighborhood just now) and see if the ABS and VDC systems kick in as expected. I think you'd want that level of assurance before driving in traffic with the parking brake button depressed.
I still maintain that displaying video on the dashboard while the vehicle in in motion (illegal in my state, your mileage may vary) is distracting to the driver and therefore dangerous. Others may disagree.
The reference to removing airbags was meant to be humorous, but while doing some research I discovered an amazing phenomenon. Some people have actually removed airbags in order to install a video screen in the steering wheel. The mind boggles. Kids, don't try this at home.
I've ordered the SE mesh grill. Will report how it goes. Prob having dealer install it so they are responsible and I dont brake it. Might sell the original chrome grill, in fact I know some buyers of the 07 prefer the original chrome grill to the new black version. In fact I saw a perspective buyer of an 07 in another B9 forum saying they were going to get the 06 just for this reason so they could still get the 07 and buy the 06 chrome grill from someoen like me.
I can't believe that one site seemed to have had the mesh grill since May long before the 07 came out (just did) I was asking since then but fine to hold off begin of July when I will have at least used the orig grill for a year.
Now hopefully a Euro subaru parts dealer will sell the Euro B9 clear tail lights as seen on the website for the euro Tribeca.
Well I did that but just wanted to see if you had any sources for your claims that it disabled the VDC. I know that the ABS DOES work with the emergency brake button pushed. I tried it on a wide open road that was snow covered this past winter (driving slowly). and guess what? the ABS still works :P
What I was trying to say was don't make claims of FACT unless you know for sure :shades:
What I was trying to say was don't make claims of FACT unless you know for sure
So now we know that depressing the parking brake button doesn't disable ABS. That's good to know; I don't think it's documented anywhere. It probably doesn't disable the VDC (since it's dependent on the ABS system), but you could also test that next winter.
If you'll my read my quote (below), I indicated that I was uncertain:
If I recall correctly, your proposed modification also disables the Vehicle Dynamics Control.
And we still don't know exactly for sure, but it appears that it probably doesn't disable VDC . Shall we keep splitting this hair, or move on?
Do you think that there's any way to replace this?
Also, i noticed that the left side of the whole dashboard that is supposed to look as if it continues onto the door... has a gap of about one inch. I will get the dealer to look at it, it's an aesthetic thing... but anyway, if anyone has any information on the plastics for the b9, please post it up!
Bob
i had my subaru for about 3 weeks now and the first thing i noticed was the dash board gap. I spoke with the dealer, and she mentioned that nothing could be done. also, she showed some other models on the floor that had the same problem. its manufacturing issue that subaru needs to be better at.
let me know if you get this dash board fixed, i personally don't find it apeasing, not for 50K CAD.
I guess there's no other way to fix the gash i have in that dashboard as well... bah humbug.
But since this is a manufactureres defect, shouldnt this be something that they SHOULD fix?
Have you consulted a detailing shop? They can do some amazing things.

Here's the video of the test:

No visible intrusion into the passenger compartment. The front windshield didn't even break.
Where is and what is it for. There is a button to turn VDC but that nothing to do with the E Brake.
Please explain
its frustrating on such a nice car considering Subaru doesn't make as many cars as other manufacturers.
Note the entire A-pillar is intact, the whole passenger cell is still there, and looks like it could hold up to a 2nd impact. Very nice.

I take my 06 in for oil change
can I see about getting rear camera and sensor unit
installed?
