1999 Silverado Problems

good. Problems, though may be irritating, are cosmetic/fit finish issues and from the looks of it all have been resolved other than the slider. Do you think that the new bumper will rust as quick as the original? They sure are thin...

How long did this take to start? I'v had the passenger side checked twice and no better yet. Did you drill and rivet yourself? Brave man if you did. Haven't had the other problems though.

rear quarter windows. The symptom is windows leaking air. The problem is defective latches. GM fix is to r/r the leaky windows. Unfortunately for me is that they r/r three times on both rear windows and it still has the defective latches...Good luck on yours...

Loaded LS route also to get a slider...ended up going with a 2500 LT.

anyway.....I too had the 7 quarts of oil on the invoice...first change was on the dealer...and i was going away that night...so i drained a quart out in my driveway...then checked it..it seemed low...ended up putting half back.

Next time they apoligized for that...but the invoice still said 7 quarts!
..ends up a tech told me it takes 6.5 quarts...and not 6 as the manual says....so they can't bill for a 1/2 quart....so you pay for 7...I said well then where is my 1/2 quart of Mobil 1 I am paying for??

...he went in the back and gave it to me..

Quadrunner says he puts 6.75 quarts to fill his 5.3.

I am fortunate to have none of the window/door problems you have mentioned.

    Good Luck

I guess since "you" havn't had any problems, that makes GM trucks the best, right? Other owners just got one of the "few" bad ones, huh?

Any business person would love to have you as a customer! Wanna buy some lakefront property in Arizona?

Chevy could not build a good truck even if they tried.

I put in 6 5/8 quarts today, to bring it to the full mark on the dipstick. If you only put in 6, it still reads inside the hash marks but toward the "add" line.

at the top of the check pattern?

When it gets very hot...and expands...don't you think more is worse??

Has anyone else noticed how hard it is too turn in 4WD. I know 4WD is not to be used on pavement, but there are times that you come on dry pavement while in 4WD and this truck is terrible. I have tried it in parking lots and it will leave heavy black tire marks and have to dig it's way around if you turn sharp in 4WD. If try to back up in 4WD with front wheels turned, you swear the parking brake is on. The dealer says that all of the 99's are like that and nothing can be done. Previous Fords and friend's new Dodge does not do it in same parking lot test.

PS it is a 99 with small V8.

they all do that. When you turn...tires turn at different rates..or even backwards depending on how sharp...
In 4WD...tires are locked and can't slip or turn at different rates. This is why you don't use it on pavement. On dirt and snow...the tires can slide and slip when turning. On concrete, They grind and damage the drivetrain.

It's not just 99's....Every 4WD made by anyone is like this.

    Good luck

Getting back to the oil fill mark. My reasoning, and mine only, would assume that no matter what your dip stick read your oil pan only holds so much oil. I would stick to the manuf. specs and not put alot of faith in the dip stick reading.

..as the dealer puts the same amount in.

Book calls for 5 for 5.3 and 6 for 6.0

    - Tim
  • markbuckmarkbuck Member Posts: 1,021
My 4.8L calls for 6. What book says 5 for the 5.3L?

Trust the owners manual, dipsticks vary. I run 6qts in my 4.8L, dipstick reading is about 1/2 way up the crosshatches.
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
people say 6 for 4.8/5.3's...but my book..says 5 for 5.3's....it's an early 2000...so who knows?

Dealer puts in 6.5...so that it is..

My oil change took 6.5 and i have the 5.3L

If you have a puff of blue smoke on start up or oil in your tailpipe, you may be running .5 qt too much as the manual calls for 6 qts.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
6 quarts is in the truck the other .5 is for the filter thats what the guy told me.

    Ryan
No puffs of smoke truck is fine
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
5.5 for the truck, .5 for the filter= 6 qts.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
6 for the truck + .5 for the filter is 6.5 last time i checked not 5.5.

It says 6.5 quarts in my maunal. Also the salesman and the oil guy said its 6.5.

    ryan
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
    Tim's says 5 qts
    Mine says 6 qts.

    shall we start a survey?
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Sorry my manual does say 6 quarts. The half is for the oil filter though i just added that in myself. I apologize

    Ryan
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
a 1/2 qt of oil yourself OR you added in your post that 1/2 qt. was for the filter. Just getting technical ;)
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
I added that in my post. Sorry.

Like I said, your oil pan will only hold so much oil. I would put more faith in the pan specs than some doorknobs oppinion down at the local dealership or the reading off a dip stick. Dip sticks vary from truck to truck--the volume of an oil pan does not.

I have a '99 extended cab Silverado.I have a vibration somewhere in my door on the passenger side. When the bass gets turned up 3/4 of the way I can hear something vibrate. This drives me nuts!I have had all of the speakers replaced but the drivers side door, and I still have a problem. One dealer said that there was nothing wrong, and it was normal. It sounds like the metal speaker grilles are vibrating.Any cures for my problems?
  • nrd525nrd525 Member Posts: 109
The source is real easy to find.Put someone in the back seat, put a bassy CD in,and crank it up.I would bet big $$$,that you will find it's the plastic on the rear door or side of cab(I don't know what you have for sure). My truck,a friend's dad's and another I have sat in ALL do it!And I'm guessing, all of them, period,do it too.Just have whoever is in the back push on stuff until they find it,it will take about ten seconds!
Now to fix it.It WON'T be free, unless you really have a great dealer. But if you get the tools, and can get the panel off,you can put any number of sound deadening materials under it.You just kind o have to wing it.If you go to
www.Crutchfield.com,and look around, they have several types of sound deadener stuff:sheets, paint stuff, bubbery stuff in a bucket, etc.I would guess on our trucks,it will be the white stuff in the bucket. If you have a good dealer, let them try it first, but YOU,or a car stereo place will end up doing it.
I had an 86 Iroc Camaro, and the top of the dash buzzed enough to make me nuts.I complained to the dealer, and he tried to fix it,and he helped, but not enough to really stop it.I took off the dash, and after about a half dozen tries, finally got it stopped.I used the stuff in the bucket,AND I had to use some silcone sealer(the non vinegar smelling stuff, the stinky stuff has a lot of acid in it,and it will rust any steel it touches after a few years)to get the last buzzes out of it.Some buzzy plastic just needs to have some tension on it to stop, some needs to be "weighed down",so the freq of the buzz drops down to where the car noise covers it up anyway.
I ended up putting the white stuff on each side with a piece of rubber hose in the middle of the blob,to stop it for good. And it lasted for 4 years, until I sold it.
What you HAVE to make sure of,is that you DON'T use anything that will melt or soften up in heat!If you do,it will ooze out of the panel in summer heat, and you won't be happy.
Good Luck, and let me know what happens,so I can know what I'm in for...

Thanks for the help.I am probably going to sell my truck in the next month or so.I may try to fix it.I have been trying to get a good trade in value for it,but haven't got a good price from anyone.I have a '99 LS Z71 Extended cab, most options, power everything, and 6200 miles.A dealer tried to give me $19k for it last Friday. The sticker on it slightly less then a year ago when I bought it was $30500.I don't think it depreciated that much in less then a year.I hate car lots!
  • nrd525nrd525 Member Posts: 109
Yeah, you take a big hit when you trade them in so soon,it seems like half of that is as soon as you drive off the lot.I had no real choice but to take a hit on my 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee, the seat was killing me,and I had problems with the entire driving position. After a year and a half I couldn't take it anymore, and I traded it on my Sierra.I paid 27K for it,and got 21.5K on the trade.I only had 14k miles on it.The only "problem" I had with it was warped rotors.I liked it,I just couldn't sit in it,five minutes, and I was dyin.....
Good luck on selling your truck, what are you going to get???
  • kissfan1969kissfan1969 Member Posts: 20
I plan on getting a CAR!I have driven nothing but 4X4's for the last 8 years. My house payment jumped $70/month,gas prices SUCK,and I need a little more money left over at the end of the month.I plan on getting an Impala LS or the Monte Carlo SS.It'll be quite a change. But the gas milage alone will be worth it.I will probably wait another month or so.I wanted to get a 2000 because all of the dealers have good prices on them now,but you get the leftovers. There are no '00's that interest me,and instead of ordering I will just wait a while longer before selling.
  • nrd525nrd525 Member Posts: 109
You know what?I had my first truck,a 77 Dodge Power Wagon,it was a disaster, the stuff that went wrong with it was almost unbelievable! But you know what?In the two years from when I sold it,till I got my full size Blazer,I really missed driving it.Then,I went from the Blazer to a Caravan, and for 4 years missed the Blazer, then I went through an S10 Blazer, and two Jeep Grand Cherokees, all the time wanting a full size truck or SUV.Now,I'm "home" again!I don't think I'll ever have anything but a full size truck/SUV(as an only car)again.
As far as other vehicles,I know someone who has a 99 Z28,and if he buys one of the last of the current line in 02,I'm going to buy his if I can swing it.That's about the only type of CAR I will ever buy.I hate FWD cars.....V8/RWD forever!!

If you are not satisfied with your truck please
email me the details of your ownership experience.
I will post them to a web site devoted to problems
with GM trucks and will also forward to several
people in GM management. Maybe if they continually
get these emails, they will be forced to retrofit
ALL trucks with fixes incorporated into the 2001
    design.

    Thanks,

I am out of town and found a new 2001 Ext 1500 at a dealer there. I checked out the frame and there were enough other trucks (100+) to compare with that I was able to chronicle the visible changes across 99, 00 and 01. Ok, from what I can see, the 99 and 00 both had a wimpy bolt on transmission crossmember that was not braced to the frame. The 00s after It also drops down lower to accommodate a larger crossmember. The 01s add two braces that run from a foot behind the front wheel on each frame rail to a central point on the crossmember where the front bushing of the lower control arm attaches to. this effectivly provides another 90 degree brace to the frame. The 01 also has a brace that runs from the left to the right frame rails about 8-10 inches in front of the driveshaft carrier bearing mount.
I took tons of digital pictures of these trucks, including the frame stickers that show the build date. The 2001 showed a 6/21 date. I saw many 2000s in the 6/8..6/9 range but no braces. I even have several pictures of a brand new complete 4wd frame leaning against the body shop wall it had no braces..was built in Canada on 6/6. It did have the complete Trans Xmember attached. I would like to see that shop ticket. Could it be vibration related???? Anyway I will be back in town tomorrow night and will upload the pictures to my web site if you are interested.... Oh BTW there are no new rear door handles.

Have had squeaks coming from the front @ rear of my Z71. More pronounced at lower speeds even over the smallest of bumps. Service advisor gave me his B.S. explanation that it was a 4WD. Gee, my 97' didn't do that. Has anyone experienced this problem? Seemed to notice problem after having mud guards installed at dealer. Thought of having my wife drive around while I was under truck to see if it was possibly the suspension. I'm sure that's what the dealer would like me to do...

regardless of how much oil is in there it will not be long. I have taken my 99 4x4 with 5.3L to the dealer twice for oil consumption. They told me that the engine was designed and it was allowable for the motor to burn 1 qt for every 1,000 miles, as stated in the repair manual.
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
1 qt per 1000 miles is a bit much....that's 4 qts between oil changes...at that rate why even bother to change oil...just the filter should suffice. Have you gone out and got a second opinion from a qualified mechanic?
  • lincoln5lincoln5 Member Posts: 40
My 99 GMC reg cab LB had something similar when it was new. It squeaked even backing out of the garage. The dealer lubed and tightened the body pads and I have had the problem since.
  • marc34marc34 Member Posts: 1
I can't even begin to tell everyone how excited we were for the new 99 Silverado's to come out. And now, I can't begin to tell everyone how disappointed and just plain pissed off I am to this day. I've looked around these talks and I can honestly say that our truck has probably had everything mentioned in here go wrong and then some. Stereo's, speakers, rear windows, sliding windows, both front windows, tracking on the driver seat, replaced overhead, bad stitching, fog lamps, doors, chirping noises...the list goes on and on. So now, 1 year later...always being a Chevy man, I just ordered the Ford F250 Lariat SD Crew cab Diesel. Believe me, it can't possibly get any worse.

was your 2500 2wd or 4wd? 5.3 or 6.0? ext cab? Just trying to figure it out....thanks
