Let's try to find some oddball or little known cars
and see if we can stump our fellow THers with them.

I propose adhereing to a few simple rules--

1) No pix over 470 pixels wide per TH regulations

2) No pre WWII cars (MY 1946 and newer only)

3) No one-offs or customs.

4)NO CHEATING by right clicking!

How about it?

It's a Mazda. The same body style as the 1971-73 RX-2 Coupe, but not the US export model. I had to Google to find the JDM name: "Capella"

OB is correct, the fender-mounted mirrors give it's JDM origin away and to be honest I'd forgotten it's Capella designation. The RX-2 is significant in that it was the first
Rotary motor car to reach these shores.

    NSU Ro80
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,368
Yup, Fin's right. The Ro80 is significant in that it was the very first production car to feature rotary power Felix Wankel worked for NSU which VW acquired in the early 60s and folded into it's Audi division.

If you look at the Ro80's lines you'll see the germination of the aero look that became Audi's hallmark from the 8os on and has subsequently been copied to some degree by nearly every maker.

If anyone else has a stumper, just toss it into the ring. :confuse:

Just look at that thing and think...flush glazing and headlights, aerodynamic greenhouse, light alloy wheels...on a sedan from 1967! It must have been like a spaceship, although not as much as something like a Citroen DS

Here's one you won't see every day:

    a Buick or Holden.

Canadian models we never saw in the US. They used to have Pontiacs with Chevy chassis and drivetrains. That one looks like a Buick on a Chevy platform.

but I think that's a '72 or so Holden Monaro. I think that platform might be similar to the '68-72 GM intermediate platform, and about the same size overall, but it's a lot more than just slapping different sheetmetal on a '72 Chevelle and jiggling the C-pillar around. The windshield and A-pillar almost look similar to the big '71-76 GM coupes, but they had much more of an inward curve.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 57,092
Yep, it's a 71 Monaro, an Aussie Chevelle (or GTO, if you please)

    That's a Rover for sure...a 2000 or a 3500

Shifty's ground-based zeppelin is Buckminster Fuller's Dymaxion. But don't we have to remain postwar?
  • oregonboyoregonboy Member Posts: 1,650
The Rover 3500 had hood scoops (to feed air to the massive Buick-derived V-8). The pictured Rover is most likely the TC.

Correction on an earlier point regarding the Mazda RX-2. The RX-2 was predated by the Mazda R-100, a rotary powered version of Mazda's diminutive 1200cc Coupe. I can remember that a white R-100 was featured on the cover of Car & Driver when it was first introduced.

The pictured Rover is indeed the 2000TC. IIRC I stated that the RX-2 was the first Rotary to be offered in the USA.

Shifty's minivan looks like a Dymaxion to me and if so crosses the line in two respects, it's prewar and IIRC it's a one-off concept car.

Oh, I forgot about post-war, sorry. But the Dymaxion was not a one-off. More like a three-off I think.

That cute little guy is either a Honda S600 or S800, I forget which. Fun little car and quite valuable these days.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,368
Actually it's an S500 but it's cosmetically identical to the 600cc and 800cc versions. IIRC it was Honda's first fourwheeler.

Yup, I'm sure Honda had that in mind when they named with an S followed by the number of CCs displaced. The S2000 would look huge next to an S500.

Mr. Holland is right it's the Dauphine-based Caravelle, a kind of French Karman-Ghia.

  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 57,092
That's an Elan is it not?

The Caravelle and Triumph were too easy, you can read the nameplates.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
I actually used to own one of these, so they are real,(that is, not a kit car) and while rare, one does see them for sale from time to time.

HINT: body is fiberglass, running gear is Triumph Herald

not sure...it's definitely British and definitely mass-produced...those "frenched" headlights suggest to me a Ford product but I can't think of the various names they used...looks like a late 50s car.

Ford 105E Anglia, like in Harry Potter
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,368
That's it Fintail. I cleverly chose a photo that hides the distinctive shape of the C-pillar that characterizes the 105E Anglias. These were favorites of hotrodders on this side of the pond in the 60s and 70s as they could accept a bigger motor and were light.

When I was about 14, a local small used car lot had a 105E Anglia. I really liked it, and it was pretty decent save for the floors. They wanted like $400 for it, but my father was not so enthusiastic.

    Here's a good one...I like these...but that shouldn't give it away

Gulp...was I the chump who once said "all Italian cars are beautiful"?

The Fiat might be an acquired taste, but here's something truly hideous....

  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
    That's easy, a Packard Hawk.

Yes, it's quite a long way down hill from the elegant '53 Studebaker Starliner coupe, upon which this, and the Studebaker Silver and Golden Hawks, were ultimately based upon.

As to Italian cars, the coupes and sports cars were for the most part, real lookers; not so for many Italian sedans, however; at least from the 1960s, IMO.

    Bob
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Actually the name is a gross misnomer...the car is a Studebaker, 100%. Packard had nothing to do with it, and there isn't so much as a Packard bolt in it.
