Thanks Andy - I was sure of the Gangloffs, but not the white saloon - Guillore is pretty unfamiliar even by the standards of these rare cars.. The green car is a rebodied prewar Bugatti, I did take a picture of that as well, and will try to put it on the site at some stage. Can't at the moment because I'm at work.
Technically with so few made the Bugatti 101 doesn't qualify for our forum (less than ten) but its worth it for a real classic....

Hint: This is another product of the VEB Sachsenring, the General Motors of East Germany which made EMWs , Trabants and Wartburgs:

I think this is an IFA product - basically a postwar version of the DKW Meisterklasse which I think was known as the IFA F8. I think this was a 2cylinder 2stroke car with a 700cc engine.
They also made the F9 which was similar to postwar (West ) German DKW's. Later the factory made the Zwickau which evolved into the Trabant, although by then IFA were made at Eisnach, the home of postwar Wartburgs...
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,389
Yes it's an early IFA F8 which was a copy of the DKW F8. Later IFA F8s were basically copies of the later DKW F8s, some of the DKWs reached our shores. IFAs were made in the old DKW plant in Zwickau DDR until production was moved to Eisenach.

The IFA F9 was based on the 910cc DKW F89 which was the basis for the Wartburg F311.

Looks like a tricked out Renault Espace such as you might see on Top Gear.

Actually that's the Espace F1 concept, from the mid 90s.

I'd happily trade my Sienna for one of those. :D

Forgot I posted that one.

Not too exciting of a vid, but some may like the engine whine.

    Chevy Fleetmaster.
I wish I could see the front grille.
    I'll guess 1947.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,389
Good guess Lost. Cars of that vintage are hard to tell apart from the side, especially wagons. It's not a Chevy.

    Does this help?>

Wow! A late '40s International Harvester woody station wagon; I'll guess about 1948. You don't see a lot of those.

    Yup, it's a 1946 International K-1, sort of a proto-SUV as it's based on a truck, not a car.

It's a Sunbeam Alpine coupe. I want to say that it is a custom conversion as opposed to a factory offering.

    No I think it's factory. It's a Harrington Alpine (Series A).

You might be thinking of the more fast-backy design, which is a Sunbeam Harrington Le Mans .

Then there's the Harrington Alpine Series C, which goes back to fins (I think).

    Here's the WHOLE STORY

OK, that's where I went wrong. I knew that it had a name (which you reminded me was 'Harrington') attached to it, but thought that indicated an aftermarket coach builder.

    G'day

Thanks for the video of the F1 engined Renault Espace.

It reminds me of an early 90's experience of travelling with a colleague's wife and her four kids as she bombed down the M4 motorway at close to 100mph in her Espace. The kids were just fine as she always drove like that, but I was petrified; boxes on wheels should not go that fast!

Handling was actually very good. They were a very good car for their time.

    Cheers

I see the nice 49 Pontiac Streamliner and that it is Christmas time.
  • wgraferwgrafer Member Posts: 592
I see a '53 Plymouth on the left, the already mentioned '49 Pontiac, a '55 Chevey, a '56 Chevy (I agree, the newest car visible), a '50 Plymouth, a '49 Ford woody wagon parked around the corner. There are a few distinctive ones across the street like the Willys wagon and another '55 Chevy, but I really can't see enough detail to know for sure...

I've been thinkking about your modified Fiat 600 and the extensive clues you put in the supplementary a bit later. I thought this might therefore be a Francis Lombardi modified car, although I have no idea about the model designation, if any. I must admit I never know with modified old Fiats, as most of them were for domestic consumption only, and never seen anywhere else....

Nimitz class aircraft carrier, Vietnam war era? :shades:
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
It's called a “Lucciola” -- that is, "firefly", and yes, designed by Francis Lombardi, a World War I flying ace. I'm not sure of all the history but I *think* in this case that Fiat itself made this car. Lombardi did other designs and also made some cars himself based on the Fiat 1100.

I was curious about what the Lombardi Lucciola looked like in it's day, Google images came up w this>

    image

Apparently there were all sorts of Lombardi versions of different Fiats as well as other Italian makes. This one is cool.

I wonder why he's called "Francis" which is an English name, in Italian isn't it Francisco?

Did you know he invented the Fiero a decade before GM?>

Yes---his real name was Carlo Francesco Lombardi.

Here's more about him: Seems like an interesting fellow.

    CARLO FRANCESCO LOMBARDI

apparently the FL1 put him out of business. So yeah, there are similarities to the Fiero ! :P

I saw that Lancia Woody at the Essen classic car show last year.

There is a whole series of books published in Italian which illustrate the different coachwork on various models of Fiat - there must be ten volumes, with one each for the 600, the 850, 500, 2300 etc. They are called "Fiat Fuoriserie". I've seen these on sale in Italy etc, but not actually bought one yet - I'm not worried about my inability to read Italian, as they are pretty much a collection of pictures.

    G'day

I am hoping that it is Mazda RX2 from about 1971 but cannot see deep enough into engine bay to check for rotary engine.

If not an RX2, then it is a Mazda Capella.

Either way, a lovely, lovely car; years ahead of its time and a delight to drive then.

    Wheels are not original

Hard to tell what year from the side, but it appears to be a 1964-1966 Imperial.
  • wgraferwgrafer Member Posts: 592
I'll narrow it down to 1964 (due to the "Imperial" script just behind the front wheel well). This one has to weigh well over 4,500lbs.

Those were always my favorite Imperials. I think in two-door hardtop form, there is a similarity to the smaller '64 Studebaker Daytona hardtop which I like a lot too..the sloped downward front end, the squarish, chiseled roofline, and the 'haunched to pounce" look in profile.

I might add, those Imperials were still body-on-frame and were a favorite of Demolition Derbys. I can remember seeing a couple in one in the late '70's. Rumor was that some derbys quit allowing them to compete, they were so stout.

old wives tale, that one. What demo derbies did not allow was reinforced welding tricks, such as re-bar. Otherwise, all comers were welcome and the sturdier the better the thrills for the crowd.

It's not the "sturdiness", it's the weight that's your advantage. Most 60s american cars were slammed together by blind men.

Best demo derby cars are old full frame wagons. Lots of crush space in the rear. If you can protect the radiator and battery you are pretty much indestructible.

The blue car is a Datsun F-10, notable for being their first fwd car in the US, and for being VERY ugly...
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
That Datsun seems to be following that 1972 Chrysler New Yorker awfully close!
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 50,513
you mean the first FWD japanese car or Datsun? But yeah, it was ugly.

next to it is a Jensen Healy. I always liked those.
