M-B hosted an event and there were no lines for the hatch. I was chatting up with the instructors and it was actually the quickest car around the cones. At one point I drove it around for several laps without waiting in line. :shades:

It was like free auto cross school.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 57,136
I never embraced it. Styling wasn't great, that kompressor 4 was coarse - especially when cold. But I do like that it could be optioned pretty sparsely.

I'm going to hazard a guess of '55 DeSoto. If I'm right it's a very rare one, however, since it is a stick.

Tires belong on a car 10 years older.
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
Definitely the wrong tires. I picture this car with narrow white stripe tires or the elusive double skinny stripe tires that were popular when this car was newer.

Exactly. It would look so much better with them too - actually not an ugly car.

In the mid 90s my dad bought a 68 Fairlane out of an estate. It was a white on white car with 2" whitewalls - looked odd, but all the white made the tires less offensive.

    '68 Rambler Rebel.

After the '63 Classic, that's the next Rambler 'sedan' I think is a handsome car.

Correct. My Uncle Daniel had a nice blue 1968 Rebel SST hardtop with a black vinyl top. Notice the one in the picture must be an export-spec model as it has RHD steering.

Looks like an old New Zealand license plate, background looks like there or Australia - the latter of which had/has a like for old American cars.

Definitely a New Zealand scene.I cannot recall if they were sold as Rebel in Australia.

Yes - that didn't take long. Could also be a Star Sapphire, as they are pretty similar, but a few years younger.

Silver Golf doesn't even appear to be a GTI? Is it even vintage enough to be in that group?

Bigger photo shows another one, also with steelies. Black GTI behind the silver one.

But I will take the keys to the red Jag XK-E 3 rows back.

Golfs date back to 1975, so that might be OK now - I don't know the rules for the event. I see a few other cars of similar youth.

I'll just pick off the two W112 300SE fintails, and the MB W123 (starting 1976) towards the bottom.

  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 57,136
I think the gray car is maybe a Ferrari 330.

I will agree with most of that, and try to ID the "?" cars.

    Column 1:
    Top left - 911
Black and red below Renault 5 - Lancia Fulvia
I think the red "Talbot" is a Peugeot 104

    Column 2:
    Car below 911 - Ford/Lotus Cortina
Low red car looks like Austin Healey
I think the orange hatch is maybe a Lancia (which during high malaise was basically a Fiat)
Car below red 911: Lancia Fulvia
Volvo has a one piece windshield, would be a 544

Maxwell Smart, a.k.a. Agent 86, drove a red one in the first two seasons of "Get Smart." I understand that red Tiger was Don Adams' personal car.
