Hmm...RHD, and not a Holden, not British - it's a Prince (Datsun) Skyline, with that trim probably 1960-61.
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,148
Yes its a Prince Skyline - the second version from 1959/61 distinguished by the double headlights.

    G'day

The rear one is a Vauxhall Velox from about 1949 (mum and dad had one until 1962). Note that the front door opens backward, both doors swinging off the B pillar. If it is a 4 cylinder, it was called a Wyvern.

The one in front is an Austin, I think an A40 Devon from about 1948. Wheel spats are not original,

    Cheers

    That a Moggie---hard to date these things---um, 1953 Plus 4 I'd guess.

    Good guess, it's a 1952 Morgan Plus 4.

    A very handsome C7 convertible.

Tan top is a nice color, would look even better Black & Tan.

    For an MG. ;)

    Color combo works great, though.

I like the tan they chose. The Miata's is more of a pumpkin color. Then the tan one is too beige now.

Chevy got the color just right.

I'm not a fan of current Corvette convertibles--especially the '14. I think the roofline of the coupe is highly styled and most of that is just gone when the roof is removed. Just MHO.

The Austin is actually an A70 Hampshire - hence the spats - which was the larger engined version. The Vauxhall is indeed an L-type Velox or Wyvern - I think the way they used to tell them apart externally (apart from the badge) was that the Velox had wheels painted in the same colour as the bodywork, while the cheaper Wyvern had them painted cream, or something. Doesn't really work for black and white, though.

    G'day

I cannot recall the larger Austin of that era although I have just discovered that some were made in Australia (supposedly here in Melbourne). I have just found a 1949 ad featuring the A 40 Devon, A 70 Hampshire, A90 Atlantic and A125 Sheerline limousine - all things to all men!

The Vauxhall is interesting. I am currently sorting through ancient papers of dad's and found some photos. Post war, cars were in short supply in Australia and dad bought his Vauxhall (a 1949 model) some months before marrying mum in 1950. Until they married, he was travelling from Broken Hill to Adelaide each weekend to be with mum. That is about 350 miles each way over very poorly maintained red gravel roads. Air filters were not as good then as today and the car ingested a lot of fine red dust. A year or so later, they moved from the desert to wetter climes and ultimately to Gippsland, the very green and wet area of Victoria where I was born.

After about ten years, dad had the engine torn down for a valve grind and rebore. The mechanic called him, mystified as the Vauxhall had a very red glass-like layer down the cylinder bores and thickly coated across the head. Likewise, the sump was coated with an oily red gunge. Ultimately, they realised that the sand was high in silica and had vitrified in the head. Dad said there was a notable change in performance, post repair, but I am not sure whether for better or worse. Presumably the reduced capacity would have increased compression, but what loss to the scarred bores and pistons.

My own recollection of the Vauxhall (this one was a four cylinder Wyvern) are pleasant. By the time I came along, it had very worn leather seats and the smell of familiarity that comes with old cars. I recall the novelty of a car with vinyl seats when it was replaced.

    Cheers

My dad's first car, when I was born in Wales in the mid 50's, was an Austin A40 Somerset. I can remember that car as I was about 5 when they changed it and it was around the area for years afterwards.

I'll pick off the lead car, looks like a Standard Vanguard.

Come across a photo album from a Dutch holiday?
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,369
The car in the rear is a U.S. made Kaiser Henry J ca. early 1950s., unless by some chance it's the Sears Allstate clone.

Thats one each - I don't think the Sears Allstate ever made it outside the US and the other one is a Vanguard, but it has occurred to me since I posted this earlier that there is a good chance that the Standard Vanguard may have been one that was assembled by Imperia in Belgium - they probably dealt with all the Benelux sales. Imperia assembled versions of the Standard Vanguard for about five years from 1948 or so, even making a few that we never saw over here like a convertible.
These photos are from a large collection of photos on Flickr which are from a Dutch guy who seems to have posted thousands of similar photos - he must have a huge archive of car pictures from the 50's to the 70's and loads of related older photos too - including a number which feature cars in collision with trams which I would imagine come from the insurance department of whatever the Amsterdam tramway department was called in the 50's
Its a huge collection of abut 17000 pictures - not all transport photos but about 90% are road transport of some sort.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 57,092
Sounds like a cool archive. Do you have a link to it?

This Flickr user has an entertaining collection of images - many street scenes from around 1950-70.

And nearer to us in front of/behind the 2CV, a lovely MB W111 coupe.

Also a Fiat 1500 with whitewall tires, lower right.

in the higher number pages there are a lot more Japanese cars and a range of brochures including such delights as Dutch leaflets for Hino, Prince etc as well as loads of publicity shots - I found that colour picture of the Prince Skyline there...

That's an early-60s DAF 600 at the head of the row on right of the street, there's a Renault R4 behind it and an NSU Prinz parked the wrong way behind the R4 and in front of a Morris Minor. I'd say the photo was shot ca. '62-'63.

Renault R-8, second from the left in front row.

Must be around '66-'67 for that style Opel Kadett next to the R-8...
  • grahampetersgrahampeters Member Posts: 1,786
    G'day

    Across the front row:
    Fiat (maybe)
    Renault 8
    Vauxhall Viva
    Fiat 1500

    VW Beetle parked behind

    Left hand side of street
Citroen 2CV front wheel arch only
    Daf 66 ??
Renault 3 (rare in my recollection)
2 door reminds me of a Ford Consul Capri but lights are wrong.
    then gets hard to see

    Right hand side
    unclear

    Mercedes coupe
    Citroen 2CV
    possibly VW Type 3
    VW Beetle
then maybe a couple of Fords or Opels

    Cheers

Graham - are you sure about the Vauxhall Viva? I can't find any of those with round headlights, hence the Opel guess on my part. They're closely related, that's for sure.
  • omarmanomarman Member Posts: 2,702
looks like a 1970 or so Opel Kadett. My brother's first car was a '71 Opel Kadett, 1.1 liter with 2 carbs, 4-speed.

At the very end of the top row (L/S of the street) is a two-tone Mercedes Ponton, probably a cab perhaps a 190D. The car ahead is probably a Ford Taunus 17M.

The oddball headlights really stood out.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,369

The story behind the weird headlights is that the car was designed under the assumption that the Feds would drop the requirement for sealed beam headlights and approve compound headights faired into to improve aerodynamics. When the Feds balked Ford introduced the Fox Mustangs
with the square sealed beam lights.

I put a set of aftermarket plastic covers over the headlights over the headlight openings of my '86 Fox-body 5 liter GT convertible which at least approximated the originally intended appearance of the design.

By 1987 the Feds had relented and the Fox-body 'Stangs had faired-in lights.
'87 LX models retained the old nose but with glassed over lights that looked much like my '86 with the aftermarket covers.

    image

In any case the mystery car is an '84 Ford Mustang SVO. Rumor has it Ford may sell a new 4cylinder (Eco-boost?) Mustang in Europe but not the US.

    SVO=Special Vehicle Operations.

If I get this wrong, it will be my third stumble today and I will stop posting for the evening. OK, I'll accept a partially correct answer from myself since I am not Canadian. Anyway, I will guess a '64 Acadian (Beaumont?).

It is a Citroen Godess ID 19 or ID 21 had phnematic suspesion adjustable ride height with a lever in the centre console FWD and it had headlights which turned when the steering wheel turned ( very awkward when opposite lock applied) was a Great car way before its time. I owned one in France.
