    G'day

Forward control Jeep. Land Rover also did one which looked broadly similar. The idea was to increase load bed size in a short wheelbase. My recollection is that it gave about two feet more tray length.

    G'day

Just looked on the net at Forward Control Jeeps and see that the lower image above is actually a recent image for a new interpretation of the 1950's idea. Looks great

How do you get in? I guess step on the tire itself!

IIRC the model name for the earlier version wasWillys Jeep FC70. I have no idea what they called the newer concept version.

Yes, the Old is a Jeep Willys FC-70, the New is a 2014 Jeep Mighty FC Concept (or FC-150)

The Newer looks like it could give Unimog a run for its money.

I drove one of those a few times at Fort Lewis. It was "Tango 7" and had an aluminum cap and bench seats along the sides in the back. Was dispatched to pick up a WAC and bring her to the fort. Arrived at the pick up location to find not 1 but 14 WACs needing transportation. I put 12 in the back, 1 on the front seat and 1 on the engine compartment cover. You should have seen the guys at the motor pool when I arrived in that Econoline with 14 WACs.

    1960-ish Giulietta Spider?
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
I think the new one is based on the Rubicon chassis. I always thought the Forward Control Jeeps were kind of cool. Jeep could've been the first by far with a minivan called the Sportif based on the Forward Control Jeeps back in the late 1950s.
  • odie6lodie6l Member Posts: 1,173
Although, the style of the Cab on the newer model kinda has that Dodge Ram Van look to it. With Ford and Chevy both dropping their "Contractor" vans (E-series & Sierra) I could see Chrysler make a Ram Van using this as a start.

    1960-ish Giulietta Spider?

I get you guys every time with this one. That airscoop on the forward part of the grille does not appear on the Giulietta Spider. This car is the follow-on known as the Giulia Spider, introduced in 1962. The bulge behind the scoop was necessary to clear the taller engine of the Giulia.

Giulia Spiders were replaced by the boat-tailed Duetto Spiders in 1965.

Looks like half a car. Maybe 2/3rds.
  • uplanderguyuplanderguy Member Posts: 16,093
I've always wondered about any Nash product of that era, what happens when you turn the wheels the entire way? Never cared for that styling feature. Come to think of it, I don't like cars with fender skirts usually, either, or a low rear-wheel opening cutout.

No vent windows with that side trim would make it a 56, 57, or 58.
  • odie6lodie6l Member Posts: 1,173
Close... it is a 1958 AMC Metropolitain.

Every time I talk to a Metropolitan lover and offer my opinion that this is an awful car to drive, they insist that they are WONDERFUL cars, and then proceed to list about $8000 in modifications they made to engine, brakes, steering, suspension, tires and wheels.

It's funny that people don't see the irony in that.
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 10,704
I seem to remember a forum discussion we had with a person who wanted to buy one because of how cute they were, and use it as a daily driver. Didn't a Metro owner pipe up about how great they were, and how much fun it'd be as a daily driver? Not to me, it wouldn't be...
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Well "fun" is a very broad experience...you can have "fun" on roller skates.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
As a broke college kid I owned an '86 Sprint Metro. I wouldn't ever call it fun, though.

0-60? Are we doing down hill? :D

Heck, that was my wife's first new car! Her car was blue with the powerful 1.0 3-cylinder engine. :P

When people called it slow I'd say "then get out and push".

I will say, that thing got 46mpg at a time when gas prices spiked.

    "Late 70's VW Dasher"

My sister carpooled with a guy who had one of these with a diesel. There was an uncontrolled intersection where he had to cross a four lane boulevard. He had to turn off the A/C to make it 'safely'.

Where I come from, we called it a Passat. Quite a remarkable surprise for VW at that time.
