That's what one would think it is, but it's not a Nubira. Think Russian!

Those lazy bums didn't even change the grille!?

OK, GM tie-in, so I'll guess Chevy Nubira?

With that grille and headlight assembly, 1986-88.

To be replaced by the Passat for 90, an even more troublesome car that is virtually extinct on NA roads now.

Edmunds member RSHolland owned one that made him swear off VWs forever.

VW is funny, no? They have both extremes. Haters with a bad previous experience, and rabidly loyal fans.

There seems to be no middle ground among the VW owners I've met.

Funny thing, back in the day my grandparents were thinking of a new car, and I recommended that 1990 style Passat. My young eyes thought it was so modern and German looking, and it was fairly priced. They also didn't have the horrible rep yet. Good thing they actually bought a Taurus - even though those can have issues, theirs was OK. No doubt the Passat would have been on a tow truck all the time.

I'd roll the dice on a US built new Passat, but many of the others scare me.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
The new one got dulled down. Doesn't do anything for me, though a TDI is always interesting.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 57,131
Dull, but handsome enough, and a loaded TDi for ~30K isn't the worst value out there. Probably the most reliable Passat ever, too, as it is shaped for this market.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
With the Accord averaging 30mpg per CR and the Altima 31mpg, the appeal of a diesel (36mpg) diminishes for me, since diesel costs way more than gas around here. You break-even on fuel cost.

And both of those cost a lot less, and have better tech. Passat doesn't even have a backup cam.

    Wagon's also gone.

The only real advantage is the excellent range, and Altima is still close.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 57,131
Diesel makes sense for larger heavy vehicles. Will be a tough sell on smaller lighter things, as gasoline engine technology improves and mileage shoots up.

I suspect actual transaction prices on a loaded Passat vs EX-L aren't too far off. But neither are the fuel costs, and the latter will have lower maintenance I am sure.

Possibly a Reliant Scimitar, but not sure of model. Proof that Reliant could makes something more than awful three wheelers

Dang, I thought it would last a while but yes, that's a 1966 Reliant Scimitar SE6A

I'm more familiar with the Scimitar GTE, which I believe was more commonplace>

None of the Reliants were ever imported here and I have never even seen one.

You are better than me on the models. Somewhere in the depths of my memory there is some story of a connection between the Scimitar GTE and the Volvo 1800P. Ogle designed the GTE (and also the Reliant Robin and Bond Bug).

The Scimitar GTE was vaguely famous in Britain as Princess Anne was given one for her 20th birthday and then replaced it with several later models (some reports suggest eight in total); she is a notoriously quick driver, as speeding tickets and press coverage attest. We would occasionally see her driving too fast when we lived near Gatcombe Park in the 1990s

That is a Daimler (I don't remember the model designation. It may have just been '2.5' because the car had a 2 1/2 liter V-8.

I think they were called 2.5 or 250. D registration suffix would be ~1965.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,386
Yup, you picked up the ridges on the grille shell that cosmetically distinguish the Daimler V8/2.5 from it's near twin , the Jaguar 3.8/Mk.II.

The Daimler's little V8 is the same one used in the SP250/Dart roadster.

i'll take this opportunity to ask a question. Were the differences between the Daimler 2.5 and the Jag Mk. II just the engine and minor cosmetics or were they different in other mechanical ways or in their interiors?

    G'day

In general, Daimlers were slightly better finished than their Jaguar counterparts. For the 250 V8, this extended to a walnut dash and full instrumentation and I think slightly fancier leather interior.

In general terms, Daimler models attracted a price premium because they were seen as more exclusive. I seem to remember this was about GBP10,000 by 1990.

The engine was about 50kg lighter than the 3.2l Jaguar 6 and the stance of the car is different if you see them side by side. I have a vague recollection that springs and dampers might be different as well.

They came standard with an auto transmission. I have a couple of mates who are mad keen Jaguar fanciers and could tell me all the differences; however my eyes would glaze over first!

    Cheers

Well I can place the year as 1956 from the double bill at the theatre.

    Side of street with theatre:

1954 Plymouth with a 1953 model parked close behind it. 1956 Buick further back. Other cars look too grainy. Looks like what might be a 1955 Ford among them.

Other side of street: 1955 Mercury, 1955 Buick.

Unless there is a very similar car out there, that it is a Checker. If so, it must be a later model, as it has different tail lights than I am used to seeing.

Nope, not a Checker but it does bear a definite resemblance, especially in wagon form but it has no relation to any Checker and was not even made in the USA.

    G'day

By golly, you are finding the oddballs. That is a Humber Super Snipe Estate, I guess from mid 1960's. Tail-lights vary by year and this was before the last versions which I think ran up to about 1970

They were fitted with raised rooves and used as ambulances in Australia, assembled at a plant near my present office.

A great uncle had a sedan until the late 1970's. They were very posh for their time.

    Cheers
