    Hey

I have a 2003 Dodge Durango with 15,000 miles, yes 15,000 miles- we dont drive much in NYC. Well the emissions light went on on the dash and it wont turn off. Have set up an appointment for the dealer but it will not be for a few days. Can anyone let me know what to expect them to say or if they are going to give me some sort of run around? Have no trust in Service Dealers!!!

Hi, Our 2001 Durango RT has a problem with the 3rd row. When the bottom seat cushion is in place, the seat back flops around loose. Is this normal? There appears to be no locking mechanism to hold the seat back in place. It looks like the bottom cushion is supposed to be locking it in place, but the bar there is a full inch or more short of interlocking with the seat back, and I see no means of adjusting it, or of damage. SO is this a defect, or are all y'alls Durango's like that?
    Thanks,
    S Dod^2

I bought my 05 Limited Hemi in February to escape my Ford Escape (money pit).

To date, I've had no problems with it. I use it often to tow a 3000+ lb 16ft Enclosed trailer, I've taken it on a few looong trips, and haul 4 or more adults in it comfortably fairly often. My overall gas mileage for the last 10000 miles has consistently exceeded 19mpg with 75% highway travel. (I don't beat on it).

It is possibly the tightest engine I've ever had. I change the oil myself every 3 to 4K miles and I've yet to see the oil even a fraction below the full mark on the dipstick when I change the oil.

I am a very satisfied first time new Dodge owner!

Regarding the 2004 Durango Limited Automatic Temp Control (ATC), here was one version of a fix:

ATC fix was intermittent power connection at the Fuse Block for the "IDC" connection/fuse as installed at the factory. Was take care by the technicion and corrected the situation. Most who experienced this problem could "reset" the ATC by turning off the vehicle and restarting. The problem with most of these irregular quirks is that there are NO fault codes stored and thus the service technicians are unable to "duplicate the problem". I'm still having a problem from time to time with my dash lights not coming on at night - very frustrating. The local Dodge Dealer can't figure that one out. Other than that, I'm very happy with my '04 Limited 4WD with a HEMI.

Anyone had any experience with the Dodge dealership replacing the rear bumber black insert due to serious fading of the color? Ours is almost bleached white and doesn't look very good especially with the Molten Red color combination. Armorall or most anything else doesn't help but I'd heard that some dealers will replace the insert. Anyone else with this problem?

I am contemplating purchasing a 1998 Durango with 209,000kms on it - any views on this vehicle with high miles and gets low gas mileage?

I noticed the a/c was not cold enough - dealership said it just needed recharging but after reading about the sensor switch for the a/c needing to be replaced every year and ball joint issues I am not sure about making this purchase.

    Any thoughts?

I have a 2004 durango with a 5.7 hemi engine with only 20,000 miles, the temp rise all the way from 1/3 to 3/4 in less than 2 minutes in tranfic stops, win outside temp is around 105F, followed by air condition problems, and high noise from engine fun along with high fuel consumption....it takes about 5 to 10 minutes driving before the temp and engine noise comes back to normal

how can I fix it....the dealership said this is normal

    Hi,

I have a 2001 Durango with an Infinity sound system. At least one of the speakers has developed a "chick chick chick" sound that manifests itself about 95% of the time. Also, at times one speaker (not always the same one) gets quieter than the rest. I was told that I need a new amp (apparently this is located under the back seat?). Does anyone know if getting a new amp will solve the problem and if that's the answer, where I can buy one?

    Thanks very much!

I reccomend against it. I own a 98 Durango that has less than 40,000 miles on it. It has always been serviced at the dealer. We have had to take it in at least 6 times for various electric window problems. After looking into it I discovered that the 98 has a high frequency of electrical problems. It's a sturdy car and I will probably buy another Durango, but suggest you avoid the 98!

Hello,I had the exact same problem with my 2000 Durango reving to 2000 rpm from a cold start.I went to AutoZone and bought a throttle position sensor ($26) and replaced mine. Its 2 bolts and a plug on the left side of the throttle body.10 minutes and your done.It starts great and no more of those annoying surges while the AC is on either.

I have the same problem. I have an '04, bought used with 12,000 miles. The Dealer said it has been waxed; also said it is part of the entire rear bumper. I will take back again soon. This is my first--and last Dodge. I do not appreciation the hassle. If this dealer does not cooperate, they will regret. No more Dodge or Chrysler products for me--back to Toyota or Honda.

Sounds like it is probalbly the amplifier. The amplifier is actually located behind the plastic kick panel underneath the glove box. To remove you will need to remove the plastic sill plate on passenger side, remove screw and then pull straight back towards rear of vehicle. You can find a new amplifier at dodgeparts.com. Look under the collision catalog under instrument panel.

I have an 04 without running boards. I have excessive "rock chipping" in front of the rear tires where the rear door flares out. This is a result of road debris coming off of the front tires. According to a "Dodge Dealer Body Shop" the only way to stop further chipping is to put running boards on. Of course this would be at my expense since I bought the vehicle without them. I would have had them put on had I known about the design problem. Dodge does not recognize this as a design problem. GMC did and had a recall to put running boards on and repaint the rock chips. Has anyone else seen this problem on their vehicle.
  • uplandmasteruplandmaster Member Posts: 2
My insert on my 04 looks terrible also. Dealer also claimed it had been waxed. I called Diameler Chrysler and spoke to "customer service" and all I got was we will make a note of this.

YES!! I own a '04 Durango and have the same problem The rear bumper insert is just about completely all white. Looks terrible. Have you had any luck with your dealership covering this? I spoke to my auto detailer who said he has seen this problem on a number of Dodge vehicles and he believes it is simply being bleached by the sun. We have been unsucessful in finding any products to correct and will be contacting our dealer next week.

We have recently purchased an '05 Limited Durango with the Hemi this past July. On two separate occasions over the past five weeks, the truck has totally cut-out with complete loss of engine power, electrical, etc.. We have had no problems re-starting the truck, but are still concerned about potential safety issues. We had the truck in for service today where they cleaned the throttle body and re-set the idle based on a recent service bulletin issued by the manufacturer. In typical fashion, they were not able to duplicate the problem. Our problem seems to be of similar nature to yours. Would you be able to provide us with the name of the dealership that serviced your vehicle in order to provide our dealership with a reference point. Overall we love the vehicle, but as stated before, are concerned with this particular problem.
    Thanks.

Update to Durnago blowing hot air issue. The problem has been corrected. There is a TSB out for this problem. A new shroud, fan and expansion valve were installed as well as reprogrammed. It's been 2 months since the fix and the air is working just fine!

No need to put on running boards. Go to an independent body shop, get the rock
chips touched up. Then you want to have them apply the clear vinyl that is
used on a lot of high end cars (Porsches and the like) to protect the front end
from rock and road damage. We use it on the front end and the rocker panels
on our race car, and have had no problems over the last three years.

Thanks sstagg- had the same problem with my 2000 Durango. Dodge did a throttle body service with no improvement. Same thing happened to me on a Jeep Grand Cherokee and the throttle body service did not help then either.

Bought the sensor today, popped it in, and she runs perfect now. Thanks for the help, that high revving all the time cannot help the life of the engine.

I have 13,000 miles on my 6 month old 2005 Durango SLT. Today, after about an hour of driving, I put the truck in reverse to pull out of a parking spot. However, the transmission would not engage. When it did, it would only move slightly. Even with the throttle (briefly) to the floor, it would barely move. It finally engaged, and I was on my way. A few minutes later, as I was moving slowly up a hill, I heard a loud CLUNK from under the truck, the engine light went on, and the truck would no longer down-shift. I called the dealer and (hold on for this one) they had never heard of such a thing.
I do not tow with this Durango, nor do I go off road (it's a soccer-mom vehicle). I'm taking it to the dealer in the morning, but has anyone heard/experienced this sort of thing with a newer Durango?

    Hello,
My Durango had 39,000 mi when I bought it. I changed the plugs shortly there after. The gap was .030 off . I replaced the plugs with the correct gap and the truck runs better than expected. I didn't really notice a problem with the gap off, but definitely noticed the difference.

I have the exact same problem. dealer wants 600 to repaint both doors + 450 for the running boards and to make sure it doesnt happen again suggested plastic rock guards that go over the paint 150.... wish i knew about the running boards in the first place like you.

I have an '05 Durango with the Hemi too and it has stalled 3 times while I was driving in town. It always starts back up but it concerns me because I don't want to be on the highway when this happens. I called the garage and they said if it does it again call them. What did you find out about this problem?
  • dhilledhille Member Posts: 1
I also have had the same problem for over a year with my Durango. It has been in and out of the shop. They had to go so far as to install a co-pilot to record the problems. But, the last thing that they tried was plugging the silinoid line and that seems to have taken care of the problem. Check with your mechanic and let me know if this helps.

Just wanted to post an update on my '02 R/T that i got in August. I still have the check engine light on which has been on since the second week I had it. I took care of all the leaks except for the coolant leak, which was traced to the water pump. I keep adding coolant but I know one of these days that water pump is going to lock up on me.
I submitted a complaint to the Better Business Bureau against the dealership that I purchased the R/T from because of their lack of giving a darn, and the fact that I received the vehicle with so many problems right after it had been through their service department. I should be receiving a check from them sometime soon to "assist" me with my problems.
The check engine light came back as bad O2 sensors. I'm going to get the water pump fixed first and see if it still needs the sensors.
I also found that I am missing my lug wrench for the spare tire. The check from the dealership is also supposed to go towards that. Do I need to get one from a Dodge dealer or can I find one somewhere else? With my work schedule (I'm at work right now) I never have time to look for one.
Dealing with that dealership was a royal pain, but I still love the R/T. It did make me quite mad that I was at a job site the other night working and when I came out, someone had opened their door against my driver's side back door and scratched the paint to the bare metal and put a big dent in the door. I love the fact that people who drive junk expect everyone else to drive junk too. No one can have anything nice and keep it that way.
Thats all for now. It's almost quitting time at Job 1 and I have 40 minutes to get to Job 2 for the rest of the night.

    Hello,

I have a 99 Dodge Durango 2 wheel drive with 130,000 miles on it and recently the automatic transmission does not change correctly between 2nd and 3rd. There is a major time lag with higher than normal engive revs, then a jump, not clunk into 3rd gear. This only happens when it is COLD and dissapears after about 10 minutes of driving. TWO local trasmission specialists cannot diagnose the problem and suggest a "wait and see when it falls o"ut approach which is disheartening. Does anyone have any suggestions or help please?

    Thank you.

I had a similar problem with my '96 Dodge Grand Caravan w/ 145,000 miles. First thing I did was to check the transmission fluid level. There maybe instructions in your owners manual on to check it. In my case I was down two quarts, and after adding it, the problem went away. A couple of months later, I had dealer perform a transmission flush and now it shifts even smoother.
    Good luck.

This is my second 1st generation Durango. My first one was a 2000 and I kept it until 130,000+ miles. I now have had my second one for 2 years now. And again, no problems so far. She has 54,000 miles on her. I do ALOT of driving during the year and these are the best, most reliable vehicles I have ever owned. SAAB's, VW's and Ford's being the predicessors. These vehicles has never let me down. All synthetic fluids and change the oil at every 5000 with synthetic. I baby my vehicles. I like driving it as much as my Audi. But, I drive the truck more! :shades:

First of all I like the exterior look on this vehicle. I rented the 06' White Durango over the weekend from Los Angeles to Sacramento and back! It was an 06' Durango SLT 5.7 liter HEMI~~~ WOW a HEMI! Wow that thing went fast! Well, I got inside the Durango and first thought ehh... not the best looking interior. I sat in it which I liked the view since it was pretty high! At first getting to the 3rd row seat was confusing but I then got back there. I was comfortable for a 5'11, 185 built guy! I sat as a passenger on the way to Sacramento and there was enough leg room but the center console slants down like a pyramid shape, which made me have both feet move to the door and legs facing the driver side!

The wind noise! WOW that was very noticeable without a doubt! I kept hearing it and it was very annoying even when I was listening to my I Pod. The "wood" on the center console looked very cheap but nice at the same time (lol). The speakers that was standard (the 4 speakers) in a such terms "suxed big time" and was getting on my nerves when I was changing stations and took a long time to go back to display the clock since I have a thing for looking at the clock every other second. The arm rest between the driver and passenger was a plus! Looks somewhat small and your able to lift it up (a container or some sort) and theres a huge amount of space in there! I had my chips, soda, and my Ipod w/ charger in there!

The lumbar support was not that comfortable when you set that thing to full and when setting it a little less it was not alot of support which wasnt good. I sat in the 2nd row and the rear air/heater controls were very complicated to use and took like 5 mins to actually feel any air what so ever! The was alot of head, leg, shoulder and hip room back there. The middle split seat wasnt to nice at all which looks awful when folder forward, and having the 2 cup holders was a bit weird looking! (Did not ever folded it forward for the rest of the trip)

I had 7 people in the Durango and all were comfortable. (4 Adults,1 young adult, and 2 children) cargo space wasnt the best since we had to put our luggage underneath the 2 childrens' feet (both were 6 yrs old) and luckly about 4 large size luggages were able to fit behind the 3rd row seat. Also the "thing" thats underneath, was very handy, since we added our jackets and other things in there which fitted fine!

The big shocker of all was the gas mileage, it was pretty good on highway believe it or not! I only had to fill it up in Los Angeles and coming from Sacramento towards LA. It was a 375 mile drive which I mostly drove around 80 mph.

I experience "the" worst fog in my life while driving near Fresno (I dont know how the people there do it!) Lucky we had log lamps which were very helpful and had my emergency lights on the whole way. I saw another Durango same type and saw when he braked, I was able to see it perfectly than any other vehicle that was on the road. So he went his way and I had a trail of 6 cars behind me and when the fog went away all six drove next to me and thanked me for the helping them getting threw the fog. I was personally scared since it was the worst of the worst fog ever!

And the brakes were really bad when a van went in front of me almost crashing onto it and I pressed the brakes (not too fast/hard) and resulted the Durango to jump(like-feeling)and a horrible noise which I've never heard before, I was ok but I would have Dodge look into the brakes which something was totally wrong with them!

Anyways overall Exterior was a plus, size was a plus, interior was a (not so much) a minus, roominess a plus, gas a (surprising) plus, audio (ehh) okissh )even though I set it to make it sound really loud and nice)and personal satisfaction a plus! With all this said it was just the interior that was lacking but it was the SLT version, heared the Limited (or whatever the top line is called) is very nice interior with a nice audio system, which would have had me LOVING THIS VEHICLE! So I would recomed the Durango to everyone! Sorry if its was way too long, just wanted to give my 2 cents~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Suave Tequila

We have been looking at the current version of the Durango. Love everything about it. Have two close friends that have this vehicle. They love it, too. Problem is my wife (5'1.5") says she cannot drive the vehicle because of a lack of visibility as the driver's side A pillar blocks her field of vision when turning left and looking to that side of the vehicle, in general. None of my friends' wives have this issue and they're fairly small people as well. Has anyone else heard of this or does she just need to spend more than 30 minutes driving this car? Would she get used to it or is it a real concern? Right now, we have a Mitsubishi Montero - A pillar is relatively small (and she's used to the truck). For a point of reference, looked at the new Jeep Commander today and the A pillar is much smaller than the Durango. Thoughts? Thanks.

You could be talking about my Durango. 99 2 wheel drive, except that mine has 100,400 miles on it. It is doing exactly what you are describing. It will sometimes reach 3,300 rpm before jumping into 3rd. I was actually told that it needed to be re-built completely. At a cost of about $2,300. Have you found anything out about the problem since you posted here? If you have I would be grateful for any suggestions. :confuse:
    Thank you

Think twice about the running boards. All running boards are worthless but especially the Durango ones. They stick out too far. I removed my $452 running boards and am much happier. I am 6’4”, my wife is 5’4” and neither of us can get out of the vehicle without getting our pant legs dirty from the running boards. Worse yet if it is icy and you try to step over them you land on your butt! When it snows or if in mud they collect it efficiently and deposit it in your garage. Want to buy my silver color trimmed running boards cheap?

I have recently purchased a 05 Dodge Durango Limited, w/ 5.7 L Hemi, and 14K miles. Beautiful vehicle, except one thing, it STALLS. It has done it to me 5 times on the way home from filling it up with gas, and namely between 10-20 mph.

If my wife were to have been driving this on the highway it would be of a real SAFETY concern.

There is definitely a problem with this vehicle and Chrysler is not owning up to it and is stating they believe the failure rate is low. I would suggest to this forum that we are but a small percentage of folks who have the wherewithal to actually write in to an online forum to describe the problem. Statistics would then show that with as much discussion as we are having about this, that the problem is MUCH larger, with many more folks experiencing this, but just not writing in to tell us about the “anomaly”.

In fact I point you to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s ongoing investigation EA05-018, which can be found at NHTSA DEFECT SEARCH. Once on the page, use the case number EA05018 to search. Review for yourself, and you will find that there is an estimated 420,000 people who are experiencing this problem, with 17,328 complaints filed as of 11/02/05 regarding the same problem.

A summary of the EA05018 NHTSA report:
ON MAY 16, 2005, ODI OPENED PRELIMINARY EVALUATION PE05-027 TO INVESTIGATE COMPLAINTS OF ENGINE STALLING IN MODEL YEAR 2004-05 DODGE DURANGO SUVS AND RAM 1500 SERIES PICKUPS EQUIPPED WITH THE 5.7L V8 ENGINE. INFORMATION PROVIDED BY DAIMLERCHRYSLER DURING PE05-027 INDICATED THAT A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF THE COMPLAINTS ARE RELATED TO AN IDLE UNDERSHOOT CONDITION THAT MAY CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STALL DURING TURNING MANEUVERS. IN FEBRUARY 2005, DAIMLERCHRYSLER REVISED THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE SOFTWARE IN PRODUCTION VEHICLES AND ISSUED A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN (TSB 18-013-05) RELEASING THE NEW SOFTWARE AS A SERVICE REMEDY FOR THE IDLE UNDERSHOOT CONDITION. THE BULLETIN WAS SUPERCEDED BY TSB 18-013-05A IN APRIL 2005. DAIMLERCHRYSLER BELIEVES THAT THE FAILURE RATE FOR STALLING WHILE DRIVING DUE TO THE IDLE UNDERSHOOT CONDITION IS LOW AND THAT THE BULLETIN HAS ADEQUATELY ADDRESSED THE PROBLEM. SINCE PE05-027 WAS OPENED, ODI HAS CONTINUED TO RECEIVE COMPLAINTS FROM OWNERS OF THE SUBJECT VEHICLES WHO ALLEGE EXPERIENCING ENGINE STALL INCIDENTS UNDER ALL TYPES OF DRIVING CONDITIONS. IN SOME INSTANCES THE STALLING HAS CONTINUED AFTER THE VEHICLE RECEIVED THE SERVICE BULLETIN REPAIRS. THIS INVESTIGATION HAS BEEN UPGRADED TO AN ENGINEERING ANALYSIS (EA05-018) TO FURTHER ASSESS THE SCOPE, FREQUENCY, AND SAFETY CONSEQUENCES OF THE ALLEGED DEFECT IN DODGE DURANGO AND RAM 1500/2500/3500 SERIES PICKUP TRUCKS.

My 2004 Durango seems over geared to run at 100kph/60mph in 5th on anything but level roadways, which are not so common in BC Canada. Once into a grade at 60mph I can let it lug and lose speed or kick it down to third and then of course the Hemi runs like a train..... At 120kph/75mph it runs really well at the higher rpm's including uphill and the motor feels great but then I am risking a ticket and points. The dealer has quoted $4000 to fit the lower ratio crown and pinions but would this improve performance enough to be worth the expense?

    Dear Ohio

October 2005 car facing East with heavy West wind. Opened door wind caught door watched as door was blown open out of my hand and the mounting surface of the door hinges was like there was no support behind it in the frame. from that point on have had noise and no problems with the seals. I think we need to have Dodge do some alignment work on the door hinges. Good Luck

    Greetings

I live in Central New York. It gets cold here in the winter. Get in to go to work and the steering is as if there was Molasas for power steering fluid. Took it in for service they say all is well just a normal issue with AWD cars. that's BS being a 4 time Subaru owner, never had the problem. Have the same problem with the Transmission, slow to shift when cold. Service department says "no problem all working fine!" Some times a lease is a good thing. Other than using a gallon of gas to warm this puppy up! Any help I would be greatful.

    Thanks

I have the same problem (sorta). On windy days both front doors exhibit the wind noise. Not at the same time, but depending on what direction the wind is from. Seals are fine but I do notice a lot of movement/vibration in the door frame itself above the window. This vibration carries from the front of the top door frame all the way to the back with the most intense vibration at the top. Is this a design flaw? It seems either the door frame isn’t strong enough or too much air is allowed along the seam where the door meets the roof of the vehicle, or both.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

I bought a new Durango in early 2004 and yes those "A" pillars are capable of hiding a Kenworth! Never had this problem with the previous vehicle, a 2000 Yukon. I'm 6ft4 but have had a few close calls with vehicles approaching from the front right side. Its especially fun in parking lots.

Hi everyone. We (meaning my dh and I) got totally screwed with a 2003 Durango lease. (OK, so it's because my dh will ONLY have DODGE vehicles and was the biggest sucker on earth, but that's beside the point...).
What is really irking me is that three weeks after we got the Durango, the "LIGHT" came on. I don't remember what the problem was, but it was still under warranty, so no problem, except adding the 100 mile round trip to the mileage. Three months later, the LIGHT came on again. Back to the dealership. A couple of months later, the LIGHT came on again. Back to the dealership. NO PROBLEM, they said (still under warranty). There was a lull of several months, and BANG!...the LIGHT comes on again. By now we're out of regular warranty and the PLATINUM WARRANTY they stuck us with comes into play. But of course, whatever was wrong wasn't covered. Less than two weeks later, the stupid light comes on again. I'm stranded at the grocery store: the Durango won't start and stay started. Towing is included, they tell me. So I have it towed. The problem is covered by the PLATINUM warranty, but only AFTER I tell them it is. Then I find I have to pay another $90.00 for towing, because only $50.00 is covered. They keep my car for THREE weeks and OK a rental for TWO days. Two weeks later, the stupid light is on AGAIN. By now, my dh is rabid and calls the dealership. (he is a warranty guy for several companies and knows how warranties work.)
I take the car in and the mechanics stay nearly an hour after the repair shop is officially closed. The head mechanic says, NO PROBLEM. No charge. Two weeks later, the stupid light comes on again. This time it's a vacuum hose. A week later, the stupid light comes on AGAIN. This time they replaced the vacuum pump, and the mechanic tells me that I could've driven with the light on forever; it's just an emissions thing. Like I'm supposed to be able to tell what is wrong when the light comes on???? That was yesterday. Today I drove to work at 7am. Everything was OK. Today I started the Durango at 5pm to come home, and guess what? The STUPID LIGHT WAS ON AGAIN.
I have a business trip to take Friday AM. I called the dealership and told them that I WOULD make my trip, even if the *!!***%!! salesman had to drive me in his personal car and wait in the parking garage for me for three days.
Sorry for the rant, but it just seems to be SO stupid to have ONE LIGHT for EVERY FREAKING THING that goes wrong with this car. I work with a woman who got rid of her Durango because of the same thing AND her electrical system (windows, locks, etc. went nuts after 18 months).
My mileage is WAY over the lease agreement, and upwards of 100 miles is just for REPAIRS. I'm disgusted with Daimler-Chrysler. I'm hating MOPAR. I'm thinking that when this lease is up, I will sneak out of the house while my Dodge obsessed dh is asleep, and I will go straight to Honda or Toyota or Ford or Chevy.
Am I the ONLY one with these problems?
