I just bought a 1999 QX4 for around $8,000 from a private seller (Someone please tell me that is a good price!) It has around 72,000 miles on it and is running fine. The seller didn't have any documented service history for it.
Could someone recommend what I should have it checked for and what maintenance I should have done to it? Should I go to a Nissan/Infiniti dealer for a 'tune-up'? I just want to be as prepared as possible for what they'll suggest and whether I should believe them.
I would appreciate the help. Thanks!

You can also Appraise your new QX4 here, but I think you got a great deal. :-)

I have a 2001 QX4 with 64K miles. The check engine light was "diagnosed" as OBDII code P1142. It means cam timing sensor malfunction - according to my research. Has anyone out there had a similar problem?

I just purchased a 2000 QX4 and when I put a CD in the stereo, I get a CD Err message and then it spits the CD back out. Is there any known cause for this or any way to fix this?

Wandering if anyone has had this problem. I own a 2003 QX 4 with 32,000. miles. The car sat for about a week and a half. I now notice that when I hit a small bump or dip in the road, the car has a gentle rocking motion as if sitting in a rocking chair. It is also quiet noticeable when I come to a stop. I have no clue as to what could have caused this all of a sudden. Any help would be appreciated.

Went to Reno for skiing. Parked car outside the hotel building. In the morning, temp was about 3'C. Car didn't start. I tried giving a little gas, didn't start. Tried pressing and holding gas pedal down, didn't work either. Battery was strong like new, and it cranked engine very fast. I tried like 6 or 7 times. Called 800 Infiniti roadside service and they quickly answered the phone. I provided all info.

In the middle of conversation, I tried it again and the car started. I have no idea why. It never had any problem after that...

You may want to swing by an auto parts store when you get a chance and see if any codes are stored to rule out any fuel pressure problems.

Lots of folks turn the key on to start and wait 5 or 10 seconds for the fuel system to pressurize before cranking and that seems to help starting sometimes.

I suppose some condensation may have frozen in your gas line too.

More importantly, how was the snow?

Same time two years ago in Reno, morning temp was like - 7'C. This car started right away. Except that one time starting problem, this car always starts immediately, definately within one second. My Lexus RX300 always takes longer time to start, like a bit over one second.

I went to Mt. Rose. Saturday was very good. Enough snow for skiing. No wind. Sunday was bad. Too strong wind that some lifts were closed.

FYI - Case any one has trouble with their CD Changer (I.e. magazine rack) Electronics Master in Atlanta is quick (20 minutes). They will replace the entire unit with a new one for $415.00 - worth the 6 - 8 week wait given by the factory

I'm the proud owner of a 2001 Qx4 and I am looking to put rims on it. However I'm torn between 20's and 22's. This will be my first vehicle to get rims and I want it to look tasteful. I am concerned that 22's will mess with ride quality and how functional the truck will be. I do not want to worry about pot holes and such. Will 22's be a little too big for a Qx? Any recommendations? Thanks

I just bought an 02 QX4 with 40K on it. The truck is mint, black/black, NAV,
stock chrome wheels, etc. I've had it for exactly 1 week. This week has been
really rainy here in New England and every morning when I start it up, it makes
a squeeky sound under the hood, sounds like some type of belt of something. Is
this something common? I'm hoping it's minor and I can just have one of my
buddies take care of it, but if it's something I need to go back to the dealer
for than I would like to know asap. The dealer is over an hour away and is a
really boring drive. Anyone have any experience with this problem? Does a belt
need tightening or something, is it something I can do myself?

I have just seen this error message on my vehicle, infact yesterday. I purchased it in 2000 brand new. I am searching for fix-it-yourself manuals , no luck yet. Here is a site I found on the internet , http://www.carstereohelp.com/infiniti.htm

Infiniti does not produce the air deflector anymore. Any ideas on how to get the air deflector? I have called almost every dealership in the tri-state area. Salvage yards do not seem to have it.

Even going with 20's is messing with your ride quality and functionality. The taller the rim, the shorter the sidewall has to be. Every inch multiplies the inpact on your suspension. It can only take so much before it transfers the impact to the rest of your vehicle. If you have unlimited resources to repair the vehicle, then either will work. Otherwise stick to 18s. Also, if you intend to use the 4X4 in snow or anything, you won't get anything quality with traction beyond 18s. Of course you could have 2 sets of wheels/tires. One for summer and the other for winter/mudding.

Did you ever fix this problem? My 2001 Infiniti QX4 lights turn off by themselves as well, but I'm not sure what to tell my mechanice to look for.

Had a similar situation here in San Diego. Was going to be charged almost $950 for a 60K service that I see Edmunds quotes for about $400. My wife called our local independent and they quoted $450 with new spark plugs. She called service dept and complained about being overcharged and they knocked $200 off of the bill. Still a rip off and they didn't change the plugs.
Thanks for all of the info in the forum.

Like several of you in past posts, it has now happened to us. I am the new poster child for error code 2. 2001 QX4. CD changer stopped working. Error code 2. Infinity wants $338 to pull, send back and reinstall. Can someone give me info on how to pull the unit and where to send it. I'm afraid that I will break the dash molding if I remove it improperly. Have good mechanical skills, can walk and chew gum without causing injury to myself or others.
    Thanks for the advice

I have posted that my cd changer went down, like so many others. I think that I will upgrade to a new player, without a changer, with front AUX input and plug in my ipod.
Problem. Sales person at Circuit city told me that the speakers in my Q are 2 ohm and that the normal for most systems is 4 ohm. If I were to upgrade to a newer player, I will have to change out all of the speakers. That will add about $350 to the price plus the cost of the new player.
Anyone have any knowledge in this area???
    Thanks.

I am new to the board and need some help. I am looking at buying a 2001 Infiniti QX4 and would like to know the pros and cons of the vehicle. Also what do you think a 2001 with about 50k miles is worth, it's silver/grey and looks to be in great condition.

    Thanks

Possible fix to CD error discovered by accident - I also had the cd error about experience three weeks ago. It just so happened that about the same time I needed to replace the battery in my 2001, which still had the original battery. Because the power to the vehicle was disconnected while I changed the battery, the cd changer had to re-initialize. The error message went away, and it's been working fine for the past two weeks.

So you may want to try disconnecting the power for about 30 minutes so the system will reset.

J.D. Powers sent us a survey regarding our ownership experience of the 2003 QX4 which we bought new. When we got to the "Problems" section, we skipped all the pages because we have no problems except for a door lining that had loosened.

When I think about all the things that could be wrong, I have to give credit to Infiniti for manufacturing a trouble-free vehicle that's now three years old.

Some time ago, I had the typical Err 2 message, and had a local car stereo specialist take care of it. In the process of talking, however, he informed me that the system in the QX4 is pretty elaborate with separate amplifiers for each speaker, and that explains the low ohmage rating. If my understanding is correct, the system is designed to all fit together, and it might be difficult to just put in a new unit. Possibly someone out there has had a different experience?

Also, you might also try the Pathfinder forum, as it gets a lot more traffic, and would have the same mechanical issues.

    Good luck,
    Stan

Bought my wife a '03 QX4 at a toyota used car dealership in November 05 with 17,990 miles on it for $24,500 including taxes and registration here in NYC! I used the website from the dealer but when I went to give final payment for delivery the "dealers manager" said the price should have been $26,000 because of the documented low mileage! What a scam but I still got it for a great price at $24,500.
My wife loves it and other than having the radio replaced for free because the CD started to skip very bad, its been a great vehicle. The car is still under the Infiniti warranty for another 12 months and I will be purchasing an extended warranty. She wants to keep it so it will be worth the payment for the warranty.
The QX4 is a great vehicle!

Glad you like QX4. Mine is 02 4WD with 39K miles. No problem at all so far. The only "problem" is one time in Reno I couldn't start it in cold morning. However in the middle of call 800 roadside service, it started fine.

My friend's Pathfinder has no truble too. He bought extended warranty but felt like a total waste. I didn't, as I know it'll be a waste (statistically).

If a Qx4 shows a steady engine light on ( service engine soon) and it is jerky in motion on the free way when cruising between 50 and 60 mph, the dealer is quoting $450 just to diag/check and quoting 75 for coolant check and advise. It seems very high to just diag and check to me. Any comments why I should not go to a non dealer maintenace like speedee for these types of services, especially when the mileage is high on the car $80000? Your replys are greatly appreciated. I am very grateful to those who responded on the cd player, on my previous posting.

Sounds like it could be the TPS (throttle position sensor), but I'm not a mechanic, just a guess. Regarding your questions, my experience is that any diagnostic check should cost around $80, maybe $100, even at a dealer. And, the only thing that a dealer's mechanics can do that others can't is to re-flash the ECU (electronic control unit). So, if you have a mechanic that you trust and who is capable of doing all the same diagnostic work, I would go there. However, that's with the exception that sometimes in these issues (i.e., replacing O2 sensors or other items), a recommended part of the procedure is re-flashing the ECU. And, in that case, a visit to the dealer may be the best remedy. However, I would procede with caution. In my last visit to a dealer for a SES light, they wanted to replace two O2 sensors and re-flash the ECU, and then look at several other issues. I told them to just do the sensors and got out of there.

    Thank you for your reply.
I took the car to my trusted mechanic, who finds the problem is that it ran out of coolant just as I suspected. As a matter of fact, as soon as I saw the steam coming I stopped the car, and after an hour, opened the radiator cap and the reservoir to check the coolant level. I even walked to the nearest parts store and bought the coolant, but was not sure if adding it myself without verifying with Road side assistance ( whose consultants were not available on Sat) consultant, if Prestone coolant was OK to use. In short, my mechanic says after filling the coolant, the light went off and he says the car is running without any other problems, however he wants to do more checking on the electronics, wires etc. I will keep you posted how it goes. Many thanks. To hosts - this forum is very useful.
  • uhariuhari Member Posts: 9
    Here was the problem:

From OBD II diagnostics, they found Engine coolant over temperature condition (P0217 ). In addition, coolant was leaking from the radiator (top). Went ahead and replaced radiator, coolant as major, and had the wires running beneath the car were all checked. Cost was close to 800 including towing expenses.

Can anyone help me how to install both serpentine belts? as i have no idea how to relieve the pressure off the belts? On my old pontiac, it was a simple tensioned pulley that a long rachet would do it, but on qx4 how do i go about it? Many thanks.

My 2001 QX4 had the exact same problem today. I was driving on the highway (60-65MPH)and noticed that the car was hesitating. I knew something was not right because the "Servie Engine Soon" light has been on/off for a while. I pulled over and noticed smoke coming out of the engine. I had the car towed to the nearest dealer. I will know the damage tomorrow. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. :)

My 03 2wd 41k miles has a rattle coming from the front end sounds high up near the cowl area when going over rough road. More prominent when the truck is cold or for the first 5 miles also noticable when the truck is loaded down. When warmed up it takes a stiff bump to hear the noises. Almost a metallic noise. Still under warranty, thank goodness. Taking it in to have it looked over. Anyone had a similar problem. I am worried they will say there is nothing wrong or cannot duplicate the noise on a test drive.
  • wildjaxwildjax Member Posts: 2
I HAVE AN APPT SAT W/ INFINITY (IM STILL UNDER WARRANTY) WITH 29500 MILES ON MY QX4 I NOTICED A VIBRATING NOISE. IT IS ONLY WHEN ACCELERATING. BUT IT HAS GOTTEN LOUDER & LOUDER OVER THE LAST MONTH. ILL LET YOU KNOW WHAT THEY SAY. IM SURE MY NOISE WILL BE THERE ON TEST DRIVE IT HASNT GONE AWAY.

I had the same thing. 2003 model. Sounded like coming from the dash or foot well on the passenger side. The dealer had a mechanic ride with me on rough roads. They determined that one of the body seams was rubbing or popping in the passenger foot well. We could never figure out which one so we took a screwdriver and separated seams (just a little) that looked like possible causes and I forced silicon caulk in all the cracks between them. It fixed it and no more problems. They found a service bulletin about a similar problem that required taking off the fender and other parts to get to the problem of a loose seam but we didn't have to do that.

We had a very bad experience with our Infiniti QX4 recently. If you recall in my previous posting, I had mentioned that we replaced the radiatior as it was found as a cause of the overheating. After that, we had two or three subsequent car failures due to overheated engine. We took the car to the dealership twice and they replaced thermostat first time, removed air bubbles in the coolant/radiator system. We spend about 2 grand on these repairs plus towing costs. Dealership now figured out that engine is burned and we need to replace it. Has anyone has this kind of bad experience with Infiniti QX4 and are there any known recalls with Nissan PathFinder engine? Appreciate your response.
