Happy Jeepin,

My 2005 Jeep CRD transmission was acting up and kept throwing very strange codes (temp sensor failure, among them) and shifting oddly (wrong shift decisions for the load, throttle position, and/or RPM). Ended up replacing the solenoid pack and that resolved everything. It was a bolt-on repair, but required removing the bottom of the transmission (valve body) to reveal the solenoid pack; $240 for the part and about 4-8 hours of wrench-turning (depending on how well equipped your garage is).
Roadrunner, it sounds like you have a TCM and/or Solenoid Pack and/or wiring harness issue. Is the ECM setting any code(s)? It must be. I am not an expert, but locking in first gear sounds like a "limp in condition" or a failed/failing solenoid pack. If the signal from the TCM to the solenoids isn't being honored, that could be causing your condition.

There is a link to one. But I would recommend that you purchase a new one. These parts are a pain in the [non-permissible content removed] to replace, because you have to take the bottom of the tranny off to get to the part. Not difficult, just messy and time consuming.
I replaced mine and all of the shift problem disappeared.
I do recommend you research this or contact the dealers parts department for specific guidance... Jeep had to replace a bunch of these and subsequently changed their production line part to a certain colored connector. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but the updated part is white with the green gasket?
You guys are definitely experience torque converter issue aka TC chatter. In our jeeps, the TCU signals the torque converter to lock-up (by openning a solenoid and allowing pressurized tranny fluid into the TC). The factory set point for TC-lockup is around 52'ish miles per hour. Under light acceleration, especially when towing, my truck used to try to TC-lock up and you could feel and hear from pretty ugly shuddering. I noticed that, once past that 50'ish speed range, I didn't have the problem.
One person mentioned that turning off the OD helped. That's diagnostic of the problem; turning off OD instructs the TCU to never TC-lock-up.
I did try running a couple of thousand miles with a friction modifier, that doesn't help. The TC is metal-on-metal, not tranny clutch material.
I did some checking and my factory 2005 CRD TC was replaced under the recall with the "more robust" TC and (I am guessing) the dealer applied the detune flash to the ECU to drop the engine torque output by 10%. That's what the recall called for; nerf your turbo.
If you continue to have this problem, the only ABSOLUTE way to fix it is to increase the line pressure in the Tranny by putting a resistor on the "tranny pressure valve" (it's a solenoid that increases the pressure throughout). There is a shift kit out there that also replaces the accumulator springs for more snappy shifts (which will also improve your tranny life span). And..... probably replace your TC with an after-martker (ehem *cough cough* properly engineered *cough*) component. If TC replacement becomes necessary, I stronly recommend this http://www.suncoastconverters.com/shop/jeep-liberty-diesel-torque-converter/
These suncoast guys have built stronger TC's that will stand up to the pummeling from a torque-ey CRD.The Green Diesel guys recommended this part so as to handle their "FT ecotune" that takes the motor up to 335 ft/lbs of torque, even in lock-up.
Good luck all. Hope that was helpful.
What engine and transmission do you have? 2 or 4wd?
Mileage?
Is the TCM/ECM setting any codes?
What your describing could be caused by any number of things. Starting with the easy stuff, the most likely cause is the tranny fluid level. Confirm that you have enough and that it's the correct type for the tranny. If the fluid is the correct type, relatively fresh, and the fluid level is correct, make sure the shift cable is correctly tensioned. I doubt its the shift cable, but it's worth checking.
Depending on your mileage, you may need a rebuild....
Again, it's tough to say, without plugging into your ECM to "see what the ECM/TCM is seeing and what it is commanding your tranny to do".
Good luck!

Recently (second issue maybe? or related? don't know.), I'm feeling hesitation on acceleration after stops at red lights around 20 - 30mph. It hesitates like it's losing power, getting power, losing power, then it takes off normally.
I enjoyed your WRITE lol you are the one.. I can tell u know . And ur Clark too laughed it loud a few times I actually understood..u didn't lose me bitt ok it's a Toyota situation or it was I'm prospecting a 2004 liberty stuck in gear error out I'm not sure I'm going to see it tomorrow 350 bucks 100k ...easy fix? Ignition relay Cable/linkage bind (something loosened and made something shim at linkage or I watched a utube video on the prospect purchase EXACT SAME SYMPTOM keeping fingers crossed. 2 things Just so u know I didn't talk to much to the seller about this suspicion price goes up or won't get rig I've learned but 8 out of 10 times I'm right before diag is even done I rather enjoy this car stuff.. have inclination or something but I cannot wrench or fix the issue which pisses me off.. actually I piss off alot of mechanics cuz they can't Get me and I make that clear by the
Oh so irritating looking over your shoulder and asking annoying questions cuz I wan't to learn that tells I know more than most girls .. I can still diag troubleshoot rigs before 2005 by driving or symptomatic but not as good as prior ro 2000 (the famous process of elimination low to high cost to fix I found super fun, but my gut? That gut feeling, that bone screaming the problem at me, gets me the correct shoot direction to the problem or the major highway to it..engines I rock ..motors And mechanical my gut bone accuracy is average it doesn't scream at me as loud as engine fixes up to a certain year that is, and all vehicles after 2013 I don't know [non-permissible content removed] .. these motors in these hybrids.. too many electrical things sending units and frigging sensors.. NIGHTMARE.. my gut bone I douNt trust at all and I can't even start an electric car or a danged 2005 Prius seriously.. the no key thing just fob has ro be near car and push button start is not right.. the car under 25 mph or at a stop would go electric.. freaks me out think it stalled then it rolls back if ur on hill cuz it shuts off or goes into electric mode at idle which is a stall .. no engine idle holding rig from rolling back on hill in gear so that electric mode?? Dangerous... if ur not that bright it's sure Gonna be deadly.. no engine sound or sudden no engine no brakes steering with no engine running correct?? No hill stop brake to hold u..nope roll suddenly with no brakes compared to wen running..at a stop n idle it's like golf carts.. won't start until u punch it.. not normal not natural.. my instincts have been sabotaged..full electric?? I dunno man.. I guess I'll always buy older... so my prospect vehicle on the cusp of MY gut bone .. And it's 2002 after Chrysler takeover they eliminated most vacuum/assist [non-permissible content removed]??? answer im wishing for would be yes lol..vacuum is like a 12 v draw short in wiring harness to mere I had a 10,000 snap on motors diag machine still had so many hrs finally just put race car kill switch direct lol.. got tired of popping terminals to start car anytime I needed to..12v draw = dead battery in no time And in Maine cold? NOPE ur Done.. no matter the c.c.a.
