You probably have the dreaded loose valve seat. Have a dealer check your truck. A special extended warrantee (to 100,000 miles on all Canyon/Colorado 4 & 5 cyl.) will fully cover the cost of a cylinder head replacement. Do not let them sell you anything else or charge you.
Good luck,
Russ
No replies yet. Looks like you may already be haveing the problem. Heavier oil is not a fix for anything.
This letter, essentially stated that the engines on these vehicles were given an extended warranty for 7yrs/100,000 miles. Yes, if your engine is making new, and/or strange noises, you should have it looked at by the dealer ASAP. If it is indeed a cylinder head issue, the repair, if paid out of pocket", would be near $3000, parts and labor.
However, you said "valve cover"....I doubt a valve cover repair/replacement would cost $3000.
FWIW, my Canyon is now 4.5 years old, with 27,000 miles. Presently, it's running like a champ. IF, and I repeat IF, the head is one of the bad ones, I hope it craps out soon. I don't want to have to shell out the $$ myself, if if goes bad after the 7 year warranty is up...assming GM is still in business and honoring "old" waranties!!
Last time I called them I could not pin them down on this. I'll try calling them again and post their answer.
Thanks
I found "The Letter".
I had received it in November 2008 and my wife had filed it away without telling me. It says that in "some" 2006 Colorados "engine valve seats may wear."
A tipoff that this is happening is that the Service Engine Soon (SES) may come on and "additional wear may lead to engine idle roughness."
Anyhow, the letter is a notification that the warranty for this problem is now 7 years or 100,000 miles from the date of purchase. Good news!
Here is a phone number contained in the letter for any questions regarding this: 1-800-630-2438.
Hope this is helpful,
Joe
3 different parts were changed on three different occasions for the 4WD issue, and a throttle body assembly and injector feed wire were replaced for the starting issues.
I currently have 81K on the truck and I'm now experiencing unpredictable, infrequent start-up problems (again) ever since I ran my fuel down to a LOW FUEL WARNING level.
It's crazy. I can run for several days, then boom -- no start. It will crank with no engine turnover. In each instance, the engine will eventually turnover after a few tries and then turning the ignition switch on after having let it sit for several minutes. A mechanic had advised pounding on the fuel tank on one occasion which seemed to get immediate results, although I wasn't sure if it was because of sitting idle after repeated cranking. There have also been other instances when tank rapping hasn't worked.
I've had two different GM mechanics and a veteran GM exec acknowledge fuel pump issues with their products although I'm not so sure after reading some message postings on the Edmunds forum. One guy said it could be an electrical contact issue with the pump, a hot spot that will react irregularly when the engine is hot, cold, idle for awhile, etc. etc. -- blah, blah. He said the newer fule pumps will slowly fail as opposed to outright failure common to past defections.
I've had two guys check it for codes and there are none. I've put a fuel pressure gauge on the valve and get 53 -55 lbs of pressure when the non-start gremlin magically appears. It seems likely that the pump is functioning properly with that amount of pressure even during the no-start condition.
I don't want to drop 3 bills for a pump and find out it's not the problem. It will be more if I take it to a dealer.
PLEASE HELP!!! Can anybody offer"> a suggestion -- other than a flare?
The truck failed to start at least 12X over a period of 7 weeks prior to taking it to the dealer. Since then, it hasn't failed to start in nearly two weeks, although it has rough started a couple times.
The dealer advised me to observe whether the theft deterrent light flashes the next time the vehicle fails to start.
I believe there might be an intermittent electrical issue associated with starting failure.
Still seeking any helpful insight from knowledgeable gear-heads on the forum.
Wish I could be of more help. But describe the module to the dealer and see if they can run a check. It is and intermediate problem so they will have to keep the vehicle for a few days to spot it.
Good luck
I just bought a 2009 Colorado LT1 with the 2.9 engine as part of the cash for clunkers, It has a total of 1200 miles on it. I had to take it in to the dealer already because it was back firing and they said there was a service bulletin about the exhaust seal between the caytiltic converter and the muffler. They fixed that but I'm still hearing a noise like a low farting (for lack of a better discription) noise when I accelerate. Also I have allot of carbon buildup in the tailpipe when its seems like there should be next to none at this point. Finally its shifting poorly on the highway, it seems to gear back and forth between 2nd and third harshly when pulling into traffic. I cant help but this this is related somehow to the engine, possibly a torque issue. This is my first ever new car, I have service my own cars in the past and if I were to guess Id say it has a bad exhaust valve but I know these new engine are complicated.
Generally its running ok. It seems to idle a little rough. Im going to take it back to the dealer later in the week. If there is anyone out there who has any information regarding these issues please let me know. Im hoping I didn't just trade in my Clunker Safari which ran till the wheels were falling off for another brand new clunker.
Good luck all!! GO FORD!!!!!!!!
later zippy
under the truck sparks and smoke all over.I thought i blew a tire when we got over to the side of the road all tires wer all right.i discovered the there was no drive shaft under the truck and the front end of the differential had been blown off. I had the truck towed into the dealer and awaiting word the truck is brand new with one thousand eight hundred miles on it.I am wondering if anyone else has had thi problem
you are right it is just really sinking in we could have been killed
Car runs fine once again...hope it lasts. I hope this info might be helpful to other Colorado/Canyon owners.
One of the mechanics at my boyfriends work told me to take the coil pack from cyl 1 and put it into 3, and switch them around. I did that, no such luck. Still misfires in 3. I have been putting mid-grade gas and occassionally injector cleaner into the truck.. it seemed to help at first, but now it doesn't. I have changed the coil pack on 3.. but nothing. I am really getting frustrated with this. I love my truck and don't want to get rid of it. But there are no recalls about this issue, and typically, my warranty JUST ended. I really do not know what to do. I cannot afford to pay 4 grand to get this fixed, but i am afraid that if it goes unsolved then it will lead to way bigger issues. Is there anyone else having this problem?
Luckily, i have not had any other issues with my truck, so i am grateful for that.
Please help me!!
Thanks for your input Mr. Shiftright.
Too much of an air leak will screw up the idle mixture, leaning out the mixture (normally about 14 parts air to one part fuel) and causing a misfire.
So at least you know the principles now of what the problem might be.
Hopefully it will stop this issue.
Thanks Again!!! Its greatly appreciated.
The dealership could not give me a copy of this policy and i am trying to still get a hold of this special policy. I got my tuck back today and i am taking it back to my mechanic to make sure they did everything correctly. After that i am going to contact our local news. I think that this is outrageous that 100's of maybe 1000's are paying for this out of pocket because the manufacturer is not making people aware of the problem they created. It took a MONTH for me to get my truck back. I am grateful and praise God that we did not have to pay for this out of pocket however the dealership didn't give me a replacement vehicle either. If my brother in law and i did not work together i would have spend just as much on a rental vehicle as i would have getting my vehicle fixed. They wouldn't even discount a rental vehicle price.
I hope this issue gets out there. If i get a hold of the special policy i will send it to you in an email my email is amber@shanonsalsbury.com. Send me yours. This is a big problem it is a misfire in your cylinder head and can cause your whole head to have to be replaced if it is not taken care of. I suggest you call the dealership and check to see with your vin if it is under the special policy and then bring it there to get checked out. Try not to drive it as much as you can.
Once I fixed this my drivers side window quit working with power locks. I have had 3 of the main problems listed on this site. The 3rd issue I had is the blower not working at 1-3 but only at 4. I hope to tackle those 2 issues this week. There seems to be good info about the heater blower, not sure about the electrical issue besides some "maybe fixes" things I can try.
Your heads might be fine. Maybe it's just a situation that requires a valve job. The heads can be tested at a machine shop once they are off.
Also, last night my dad and I did a compression test, and nothing seems out of the ordinary. Cyl 1: 195 ; Cyl 2: 175 ; Cyl 3: (surprisingly) 165 ; Cyl 4: 193 ; Cyl 5: 195.
Like i said, they are all within normal range.
And 2 other problems i have been noticing lately: The passenger seat sensor seems to not work sometimes. My boyfriend will be sitting right next to me and it says the air bag is off and that no one is sitting there, the buckle up light doesn't flash, but in the dash it is lit up(not flashing). (i don't have the option to turn the air bag on and off. if someone is sitting in the seat it comes on, if there's no one then its off.)
And the last issue is that my 4-way button seems to stick. I don't know why, no sticky foods or drinks have been near it. And we're not rough on it or anything.. so i don't get it. I'm starting to think that these trucks should be taken off the market. The seem to have TOO many problems.
Any info, or any of the same issues that some else is having would be helpful. At least i will know i am not the only one having these problems. Plus, I cannot afford to take it to the dealer. I know that will cost lotsa $$$$$.
Thank you!!
