"Just goes to show that any 1st year model from any company can have some lemons come off the assembly lines"

the looks of the elantra got a make over from the previous model, but the engine is still the same, so it is not a "1st year model."

no company, not honda, not toyota would have extended the warranty for something like this. His new engine still has ALOT of warranty left on it anyways.

"What were the designers thinking? "

everyone uses plastic on those foot rests, not just hyundai. what do you expect? the warranty should take car of it. My elantra is 10 months old with 16k miles, and the footrest is just as solid as the day i drove it home.

We just got back from a 2500 mile road trip in our 07 Limited. My left foot was on the foot rest for the entire trip with no apparent damage.

This is easily the most comfortable compact car we've ever owned(and we've had many in the last 37 years).

If you can't get it fixed under warranty there are other options if you want a footrest...

I just got my Elantra on Sept. 22 and have put 300 miles on it -
    AND MY BATTERY COMPLETELY DIED!

Nothing was left on - lights - ac nothing - and it completely died. AAA said that is nuts and the dealer should replace it.

    Any suggestions?

The battery is covered under warranty, take it in and get a new one. But have them check for underlying causes, e.g. problem with the charging system.

    so - an update
They are not sure what is wrong w/ the car. It isn't the battery. There is a voltage leak/drain somewhere. They are on day 2 now of not being able to find it.

    fun times.

I have this problem both with my 2003 GLS Elantra and my wife's 2007 Tuscon. I get by with my local driving which is only 15 minutes each way but I am dying on long trips. Height adjustment helps a little but doesn't work completely. I notice that the driver's seat bottom seems shorter than the passenger's. Too bad because the seat back with the lumbar adjustment is fine. My wife seems OK - but then she has more built in cushion. Don't let her know I said that !!!!!!!

Took them a while but they found that it was the light in the trunk. The connector was off somehow and the light was always on.

Battery is covered under warranty. And Hyundai does not make the battery. The OEM battery on my '05 dropped a cell at 18Kmiles and the dealer replaced it with an Interstate battery that had a Hyundai sticker applied. And apologized for the inconvenience. And and had me in and out in less than 30 minutes.

What more could I ask for? Sometimes a battery just croaks. Sort of like a hamster. :D

Those can be tricky to find. "Hey Leo, come over here and let me close you in the trunk to see if the light comes on. I'll let you back out. Promise."

I've had my car for four days, and though I love the car, I really, really do not like the clutch. Now I wonder if something's wrong. I have to press it all the way to the floor to engage it; to the point where I've stalled out a couple of times. Does anyone experience this, or might something be wrong with it? It's actually really annoying to drive this way, I have to stretch my left leg out to get it to engage.

on my '99 Kia Sephia 5-speed manual I couldn't start the car one day. I had just purchased the car and was having a hard time getting it started. I thought that that was weird as the car was about 5 days old. I eventually got it started and drove to me dealer.

One of the service people came out and explained to me that I "had to have my clutch pedal completely pushed down to the floorboard when cranking the car over as it won't start if you don't."

It must've been dumb luck helping me to get the car started until I learned this. Once told that information it was easy starting it from then on. I remember it being kind of a left-leg workout for a few weeks until my leg was used to pushing the clutch pedal all the way to the floor when both starting the car and shifting it's gears.

Hello all. Heres a list of some early production 07 Elantra issues i have had. Build date October 2006. Purchased Feb 2007. Speedometer error off by 5 miles per hour, drivers side seat track off track from factory, alignment off from factory, steering wheel off center, glove box rattle, passenger side dash vent creaking, all were fixed by Hyundai under factory warranty. Mystery rattle has developed behind glovebox so the quest is on to find it. Overall these are annoyances except for the speedometer but Hyundai did make good on it after consumer pressure and extended the warranty so i am happy with that.

So far everything else is going well after 18,000 miles. Switched to 100 percent synthetic motor oil and so far the engine is a bit quieter on startup in the colder weather so i highly recommend it.

Update: Got it fixed lickity split under warranty at the dealer. Good experience.
The foot rest might ve been cracked before I bought it. However they damaged or loosened the hood release during the repair. Had to go back next week to deal with that. They must like me there.

    Backy and others.

What are your thoughts on the Elantra Touring 5-door coming out in a few month?
  • Options
    backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Right now the Elantra Touring is near the top of my "consider" list for when I buy a car this fall, along with the 2009 Fit. Of course I'll have to drive both of them, and I'll have to see how the IIHS side crash test comes out on the Elantra and what its price is relative to the base Fit. I like what I've seen of both cars so far.

But maybe we should discuss this in the appropriate Elantra discussion vs. an issues discussion, since there are no issues yet on the Elantra Touring. ;)

Now pressing the little button won't make it pop after 6 months and perhaps 10 uses of that storage space. Glad I only left a lens cleaning cloth in there. Will see what the dealer says.

first winter with my 07 elantra. very bad traction in the snow. coming from 98 escort I never had this problem before. could it be becuase the escort was heavier or just had better traction?. or do you guys/gals think that changing the tires will resolve this problem. wheels like to spin on take offs like there is no tomarrow.
other issue..MOST CONCERN.. ON ICY OR SNOW COVER roads the elantra has a hard time stoping. the antilock kicks in really quick making harder to stop the car. the brake pedal presure feels like jelly.
    any ideas?
    tire replacement.. or CAR REPLACEMENT?

    backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
    1) Your Elantra has more power and torque than your Escort, so use a light foot on takeoff, especially when it's slippery. You might also try getting winter tires if you want more traction in ice/snow--they can make a world of difference.
    2) Learn how to drive a car with ABS. If the car has a hard time stopping with the ABS engaged, it probably means you are driving too fast for conditions. ABS won't help you stop all that much shorter, but it will help you maintain control of your car.

If the brake pedal really feels like jelly, you might want to have that checked by the dealer. I've driven several 2007-8 Elantras and none of them had brakes that felt like jelly.

It does sound like a case of lead foot: both accellerating and braking.

    mariogpmariogp Member Posts: 20
well.. it only feels like jelly whenever the antilcok is engaged.
I gues I'm guilty as charged. :P speedo

my milage has also been worst.. lately only drive about 1 mile both ways.. milage has been below 20..with long warm ups in the cold winter.
    when I was driving city/expressway.. I was geting 30+.

If only I had gotten the se or limited model..
  • Options
    bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,601
Those long warm ups don't help your MPG.

You are getting zero MPG when the car is running and not moving.
  • Options
    backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Why do you wish you had gotten an SE or Limited? It wouldn't go any better in the ice/snow. For 2008 that's a different story, though, as the 2008 SE has standard electronic stability control with traction control--would help control wheel spin on takeoffs.

This winter, I experienced a similar event with my 2007 Elantra. Whenever ice/snow was present and the temperature was below freezing, I lost about 70-80% of my braking ability. I had the same "jelly" effect, but felt more like ice or snow was adhering to my rotors or pads, and that the brakes would not be fully applied even with my full weight on the petal.

I'm in contact with Hyundai and filed a report.

The problem is that once the temperature is above freezing, the brakes function fine. Hyundai was the car brought to a dealer for inspection, but the problem only exists under wintery, cold conditions. Nothing can be found.

I've had the problem on 4 different days, using driving skills to avoid disaster.

Get winter tires for winter conditions. They adhere better due to softer tread and more siping, thus providing traction to both go, and STOP. Factory equipped OEM all-season tires can get too hard in below freezing weather, causing loss of traction, especially for braking. On the other hand winter tires are too soft for summer driving, and will wear quickly and track poorly.

I need to clarify that by winter tires I mean snow and ice tires, like Nokian WR or Bridgestone Blizzak. Reluctantly you may rarely need them, but they're cheaper than getting into an accident.

Tires have absolutely nothing to do with my situation. I live in CT and have winter tires. I've been driving in snow for over 40 years. Since 199, I've purchased 4 Elantras, 1 Sonata, and 1 XG350L. I currently have 2 Elantras and the XG350L.

I've never had a problem with Hyundai's, ABS Brakes, or tires.

The car brakes perfectly when it is clear weather or above freezing. Snow and ice and below freezing temperatures cause my problems. Why? I have no clue, since it has never happened with my other 5 Hyundai's.

If it only happens when the temp. is below the freezing point of water then the issue is most likely moisture in your braking system.

    So, hello everyone =)
    I just got my 2007 ( 11k miles ) Elantra about 3 weeks ago.
Right on the first days we heard a weird noise on the back passanger side tire when braking slowly. Took to Hyundai, got fixed...
After a week or so I thought I heard a minor noise onje day, but it went away...
    Nooow,
at my work, there's a driveway a bit inclined, and twice already when I put on park, take foot off brake the car JUMPS/ROLL back (like 2,3 little jumps/rolls). Mind you that my other car NEVER did that...so, I am a bit concerned....

Does anyone have ANY idea what it could be?!

If it happens 1 more time Im taking to the shop, AGAIN =(

Thank you for your advice in advance!!!!!! :confuse:

p.s.: the car is automatic transm.

Is this with or without the parking brake? If without, IMO the parking brake should be applied, on an incline.

Does anyone know what is required to replace the front grill on a 2008 Hyundai Elantra? Does the entire front nose section need to be removed? Any help will be appreciated.

Just had my 07 Elantra in for servicing and after leaving the lot a little "beep" was heard by my wife and I. The "beep" continues every 3-4 minutes. It sounds like a cell phone when its battery is going dead. Went back to the lot and while I was talking to the SM the"beep" happened to my wife. The engine at this time was turned off. Needless to say it never did it while the SM was listening. It did it one more time after leaving the lot. Never did find out? Anybody have an answer tot his? Otherwise like the car just fine. :confuse:

Since day 1.. car tends to pull to the left.. Dealer said that aligment was within speks. 20k miles later.. front tires are worn out...uneven.. took it back to the dealer..said nothing was wrong with aligment.. took it to another shop..and they found driver side out by 30 degrees.

problem was solved for a while..
that was 3 wks ago.. now car is pulling to left side again.
anuone else having this problem... why can't they make a car that steers straight?

What is the year make and model of the vehicle? Which alignment specs is out by 30 degress i.e. Caster, Camber, Toe? What do you mean by problem was solved for a while? A normal vehicle will not pull to any side within 3 weeks unless you hit something or some mechanic forgot to tighten suspension parts. It's best to check vehicle tracking on a flat straight freeway while cruising not accelerating. Checking vehicle tracking on surface streets is not accurate due to road crown. Where did you check your vehicle for pulling? Did you rotate tires after 3 weeks? Need more info to answer your concern.

For the last 3 days I have had a squealy-scrapy noise for the first few times I apply my brakes, like when I'm backing out of the driveway. It does this for each driving session (going to work, leaving from work, etc.). They seem to be working fine and I don't have any warning lights on the dash. Any ideas?

Has it been rainy or humid the past 3 days? I've noticed before with my Elantra that in damp weather, it can squeak a bit backing out of the garage, but once the surface moisture is dissipated there's no more squeak--much as you reported. How many miles are on your car?

I work for a company who has purchased 2- 2007 elantras..... one of which the driver has never hit anything and has never been in an accident. The other day her car started "shaking" she took it to the dealer, they found nothing wrong. Then while getting her oil changed they noticed a nail in her tire, they pulled the tire and all seemed well the shaking had subsided. Yesterday, while I was driving her car started shaking... bad. I took it to a local shop, afraid to drive it. The shop told us that both camber was way off spec. She had 2 tires the L/F and the L/R were "way out" They also preceeded to fix the front and then said that the rear has non-adjustable shocks and would cost a few thousand dollars. I am trying to find out how the dealer never noticed this before in any service. I also had to replace 2 tires and was told I have to have them rotated every 7,000miles and they will still continue to wear until I have the rear fixed. Do we have the same problem??

My 2006 Elantra Limited, ~24K miles, started pulling to the right immediately after an alignment. I spoke to the manager and he told me that the alignment was a pain because of the wheel covers. They have to remove the covers, because the alignment machine will not attach to the wheel, to align and then place covers on the wheels before giving back to owner. For the hell of it I rotated the tires myself the following day, it was due and I didn't want to pay to have it done by these clowns. After rotating the tires according to four tire rotation, the pull was eliminated. After using up the factory tires, I had two new Goodyear eagles put on and here comes the damn pull to the right again. After driving the car a few weeks, I was working 60 hour weeks, I finally rotated the tires to see if it would fix again and it fixed it again. This time I did not place the wheel covers on. Tomorrow I am going to place the front two covers on and test drive again.

If alignment specs is way off, ask the local shop (that diagnosed the problem) for a printout of the alignment. Bring that printout to Hyundai and have them align the car or bring the work order/receipt from the diagnosing shop and bring it to Hyundai. I believe it is still under warranty unless it indicates a previous accident which was not disclosed by the seller of the vehicle. If it is really way out then there is some bent parts somewhere since as far as I know my 2008 Elantra shop manual (same as 2007) indicates there is no Camber adjustment for the front & rear suspension on this vehicle.
  • Options
    gomst1gomst1 Member Posts: 58
I believe you took your vehicle to an incompetent shop. 2006 Elantras has only front and rear toe adjustments. No caster & camber adjustment which is used to correct a pull. Normally misaligned toe adjustment will not cause a pull to one side. This means that they did not return the tires to their original places. If your wheels did not hit something really bad, Most of the time its a tire problem. Why did you take it in for alignment anyway?

After 3 months of owning a 2008 Elantra with automatic transmission, I began to notice a strange metallic clicking sound only when initially accelerating after car was put into drive. Subsequent accelerations from a stop were normal. this would sometimes happen when car was put into reverse under same circumstances. I went to dealer and technician road tested car and told me the axle on driver's side had too much "play" in it and would have to be replaced. New axle was ordered and installed under warantee. After 3 days of normal operation, car is doing the same thing. Recalled dealer and was told this is not a safety issue but that Hyundai does have service bulletin on this issue. Has anyone else had same problem with 2007 or 2008 elantra? Should I just ignore it or make a bigger issue out of it? Thanks for any advice

Which tires is wearing out and which side of the tire is wearing out (i.e inner, center or outer part of the tires)?

The front out part was wearing.

    gomst1gomst1 Member Posts: 58
This kind of problem may be normal from too fast turns/cornering otherwise, there is too much toe-in on your front tires (front part of tires pointed inwards above specs). This (toe) will not cause a pull if out of specs but the tires can cause the pull from uneven wear.
