I can't remember. Who manufacturer the Subie filters?
    RR
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Purolator. They fall under the recommended filters, and were called a "solid design".

You can get a filter and a crush washer for about $5 at your local dealer (or www.subaruparts.com).

Here are the part numbers for OEM filter and gasket. You will need them if you order form SubaruParts.com:

    Part # 15208AA060 Oil Filter Leg/impre $4.31
    Part # 11126AA000 Gasket $0.31

I just read over at i-club that the new Forester will be here in Feb/Mar 02 and will offer a TURBO engine as an option:

    Just more confirming evidence. Woo-hoo!

    Just one stupid follow-up question...
Is that Oil Filter/Gasket part number(s) the same for a 2000 OB H4 as well as a 2002 Forester H4?
    (We're thinking about buying a 2002 Forester.)
    Thanks!

Good question. I would guess it is but SubaruParts.com lists the item as a Legacy/Impreza part. Can't imagine it being any different. Juice will know.

I bought my 01 Forester S+ a couple of months ago and my dealer just called me to offer an extended warranty from Subaru for $995. It's a bumper-to bumper, 6 year/60,000 mile warranty (they called it "Gold Plus"). Does anyone have any advice on whether you think its worth it or whether that's a decent price for such a warranty. Personally, it seems a bit steep to extend the BTB for another three years and the power train just one more year beyond the standard warranty.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Hmm, the guy can't even spell Forester. He sounds like he believes what he's saying, but his source could be off (or speculating out loud to him).

I'll go on a limb and say the part number is the same. They both have the 2.5l Phase II engine. If I'm wrong, I'll go buy a box of washers and mail them to you.

I wouldn't make that bet with the 2.0l turbo or the H6 engine, but even those might be the same.

One thing you may want to keep in mind is that you can buy an extended warranty at any time during your original factory warranty. It makes no financial sense to pay Subaru now for a product you won't be using for another three years -- assuming the price doesn't go skyrocketing.

Don't make the decision now. Wait until the end of your factory warranty -- I think you may have a better idea if you need an extended warranty then.

Well I finally picked up my car today from the dealer who fixed the ignition switch. Drove it and everything seemed fine. Went to get out and lock my door with my keyless remote and the remote doesn't work! also the button to lock the doors on the drivers side will not lock or unlock the driver's side door. I am extremely disgusted at what I have been put through recently Its back to the dealer tommorow morning to see why I'm having these other problems

Ellen- I'm beginning to wonder about the competence level of your dealer's service dept ;-(
First they charge an arm & leg to replace the ignition switch and then still manage to screw up the locking mechanism? If they don't fix the lock problem for free I'd call 1-800-Subaru3 pronto! Is there another Subaru dealer that you could go to?

    Hi Frank,
Believe me they are going to fix these problems or heads are going to roll. I tried replacing the battery in the remote this morning since it had the original battery in there but that did not do the trick. So I will be at the dealership on Monday morning bright and early demanding that this get resolved FAST. Unfortunately Fitzgerald is the nearest Subaru dealer to my home. One way or another this will get fixed!
  • speterson1speterson1 Member Posts: 228
Ellen, I'm betting that in disconnecting your old ignition switch and putting in the new one the old code for your keyless entry transmitter may have been reset or screwed up, hence your problems.

Check your owner's manual, I seem to recall some procedure for resetting the keyless entry system in there. Your Subaru service department should have taken care of this problem from the start, but it may be a simple fix you could do yourself. I'll wager the problem is *not* dead batteries in your transmitter.

Good luck and I hope you get results,

Follwing up on my last message. The info for resetting your keyless remote is on page 2-9 of your owner's manual. I looked this up on the online owner's manual available at www.my.subaru.com.

Good luck and I hope this fixes your problem!

That online manual at My.Subaru.com can be rather slugish at times. I have saved the sections to my hard drive and now I can access it at anytime using Acrobat reader.

I don't think that resetting the remote will help if the lock switch on the driver's door isn't functioning. Sounds like they screwed up something in the electical wiring.

after a month of research and test driving, forester is the car I am now waiting for. I went back and forth and back and forth between suvs then added the crv and subie to the list.
First, my wife is the reason we didn't put the subaru on the list earlier because "I am not owning a wagon". I made her drive the legacy wich is what I was Thinking of and she almost cried... But I loved it. She reluctantly agreed to just look at the forester with me in the show room before we left. THank god! " I can deal with this". We orig, wanted the liberty but for people who just want the four wheel drive, in retro-spect this is a no brainer. Better all around. As long as I agree that "this isn't a wagon"

I am on a list for the first blue forester L in the lot. I can't wait for it to snow.
thanks for postings and all the advice, town hall is a god send.

David-- There's actually a waiting list for a blue L?? wow! Where are you? ...in Alabama? So Foresters are that scarce there?

Yah, I went through a lot of what you went through and am waiting for a Forester too *thumbs up* I also agree that it's a good value for the money. Let's hope that it won't disappoint us!

btw, it actually snows in Alabama? lol

    Congratulations! --'rocco

I live in metro boston. I think that the dealer was pushing the 01 model out prior to bringing in the new. the only 01s left were a s loaded and the L manual tranny. I am only waiting about a week. they already have the list of cars and one is highlighted for me at the end of the week. For the money the crv doesn't come close IMBook. I don't mind waiting a week or so. I actually prefer the week. what I can't wait for is SNOW!!

although I still have the jeep in the back of my mind, I am never going off road in a 20+K vehicle. I am glad that I waited and did the pain staking research and went to all the dealers to drive so many cars. some cars I even drove more than once or twice.

The added beauty of the Forester is that it can go off-road if you need too. Sure it can't do the major stuff that a Wrangler could do, but the light stuff is no problem for the Sube!

Enjoy you blue Forester and welcome to the club! Come join us in the Subaru Crew topics (link is at the top of the page).

David-- lol, your profile led me to believe that you were located in Alabama! Yah, I guess you get plenty of snow there in Boston! Yep, both of us are in the same situation. I'm also waiting for a car that's on the dealer's list of incoming units for their stock. There are hardly any new '01's left here in the NW or I would have tried to get an '01 S without the premium package.

I've posted on another board that I wouldn't be participating on the Subaru forums anymore because the "old timers/regulars" seldom address my posts directly. But this is so addicting talking about new cars, lol! Maybe I can at least keep a dialog going with other "newbies."

Again, congrat's, David and let me know how your situation progresses!

I wasn't saying "like, I live in boston dude, get it right". I live in the western part of metro boston and moving ten miles west is why I am getting the sube. tripple the snow I have been used to over the years.
And yes, we are in a very simmilar situation, I was just at the dealer and they say maybe thurs-friday type of delivery.
It is funny how the same people you see with the posts dating back to this time last year talking. it is like they live in the same area and hang out or something. They do talk about the things that made me a believer in the sube.

THis is very addicting, I find my self checking the new posts every time i go online.

No sooner did I leave a post on the web, did the dealer call to tell me that it was in on the truck today. I just went to sign the papers and I am picking up my 02 forester in blue tues @ 2pm. WOOOOO!!!!! I can't wait. at first waiting a week wasn't bad and now it is coming sooner than orig expected and i can't wait.

I hope rocco and the rest of you waiting get it soon.

David, it is true, you are showing the classic signs of Subaru addiction. It starts with these forums. Then it's the trip to the Dealer and _the_ Test Drive. Then on we go to the anxiety of purchase, the euphoria of pickup, and the depression of the break-in period. After that, you find yourself praying for rainstorms, snowstorms, and any conditions that will put your new Sube to the test - long trips with family/friends, hauling huge amounts of stuff, winding dirt roads in search of that secluded trout stream - you name it.

Don't worry, we've all been through it. I'm mostly cured now after 10 months and 14k miles. One of my last major symptoms: Getting to work way to early as I can't wait to drive the Sube.

    Welcome [to the support group...hehe].

David-- That's great!! I haven't heard from my dealer in more than a week. It's bad because it's giving me more time to wonder if I'm making the right choice. I recently purchased a new Audi so the Forester is going to be mostly a utility vehicle but I'm still thinking that it's not going to be big enough for my needs.

Congratulations and let me know your first impressions ...and guys like Tony are way too in love with their cars! *winks* ...glad I don't show those signs of Subaru addiction, lol! :-P

Another David - that's why his came in so soon! When SoA heard another guy named "Dave" wanted a Subie, all efforts were redirected at getting him one. The official number of Dave owners now stands at 1,673,435,347. Congratulations!

You can look forward to some light off roading. I've been on the beach and around an orchard, and it was a hoot. Even took kids around for joy rides - they liked it the most.

Oh boy, you know we're in trouble when we're talking about snow in July!

Hi I'm back and Rufus did very well on the "light off roading" portion. I'll be giving a report and posting some pics in "Meet the Members" once I get a chance to sort through the images. I didn't realize how nasty mudholes could get until this trip (Was that the top of a Ford Escort in that hole?).

Tony - my problem isn't getting to work early, it's finding different ways of getting to work to vary the driving experience. The shortest distance between two points for me is 13 miles on US 1 - posted speed limit 55, average traffic speed 75, even with heavy traffic. Not fun. There's a great 2-lane road with plenty on twisties and hills that adds 5 miles onto the trip. Great to drive in summer but not the other 3 seasons because of school buses around blind curves.

18 months and 24K miles later, I find that I still want to find new places and conditions in which to drive. What's more, I want to find opportunities to learn to drive it better - I'm thinking driving schools or even rallycross.

Yes, it's sick. My wife observes that I "can't buy a car without joining a cult."

My wife says the same thing about my addiction! Always on the computer. Actually, when I ask her which car she wants to drive (Subie or minivan) I am praying that she needs the minivan for the day...so I can have fun driving to and from work....the long way.....on twisty roads.....in the rain!

    Congratulations David!! Love the blue.

Anyone know if the Forester Sport will be available in the States?
It is a Canadian model with black mesh grille, mesh wheels, Sport badging, black interior, std. moonroof, std. rear spoiler, auto-dimming compass mirror, etc.
    I want this car!!!
  • theres2manytheres2many Member Posts: 19
The first impression was a good one. It is raining here in MA, and what a day to pick up the new subie. It moves and drives better now that it is mine than it did on the test drive. >>1000 mi break in might kill me though. I put on 45 mi tonight just driving around and taking it slow varying the speeds but the temptation is there to just take it out and go. I had second thoughts about the car on the way to get it because the dealer makes stupid mistakes and that drives me nutts. My problems are with them and they are so small. The car drives great and I can't wait to go to work in the morn. maybe I will have to go to a dunkin donuts a little out of the way just to taste the coffee some place else !! I think i will have to do just that. My wife and I both have new cars this year and she might have to get an outback sedan in the next couple of years I like this so much. 1K mi seems like an eternity right now.
    thanks again

Sounds great. Really try to follow the break-in rules (I know, it's tough). It will payoff big time in the long run. The big thing is to ensure the rings seat correctly, so vary your engine speeds - never drive at a constant RPM on the freeway for more than few miles and keep it under 4k rpms.

Also, there is a 12month adjustment period, so pay close attention to any minor things that come up. Mine had an alignment issue and a very touchy throttle - a few trips to the dealer cleared that up quickly.

    Enjoy...

Sorry Bill, but I doubt the Sport will appear in the US given the 2002s are already on the road.

I prefer the Dynastar edition our lucky friends up north had access to. It was a couple hundred bucks (Canadian!) for a whole bunch of sweet features.

If you really wanted to, I'm sure you could get the body parts and make a US Premium S look like one. The wheels look like they're from the GT and the grille probably could be ordered from a dealer in Canada. The mirror you can order from a US dealer.

I was thinking about getting the Subaru subwoofer/amp combination for my 2002 Forester.

    Some questions:

    1. Is there a significant sound upgrade?
    2. Does the amp only supply power to the subwoofer, or will the regular speakers be improved (I upgraded them to Infinitys)?
    3. Is it an easy installation?

    -Steven-
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
The bumpers on 1998-2000 models were the same, but they did change for 2001. I'm not sure if it touches, so it might still fit.

If you are seriously interested, call your dealer and ask them to look up a part number for yours, and see if it matches the old one.

Steven: I don't have it, but I do know the amp powers only the woofer, and the wires are all pre-installed, so it should be just plug-n-play. I doubt you even have to access the back of the stereo, but don't quote me on that one.

    Steven,

If the subwoofer is unchanged from the 98-00 Forester models (which I think it is):

    1. Yes, the subwoofer's added bass is quite noticeable
    2. The subwoofer's amp only powers itself
    3. Should be plug and play

After 43,000 miles on my 1998 Forester "S" I need to replace the Yoko tires. Any suggestions.
  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
What type of driving do you need the tires for? Regular road driving, off-roading, autocrossing, snow, rain, etc?

    Lots of choices out there.

    Ken
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Judy: were you happy with the Yokos?

I have Nitto NT460s, and they are availble in the 215/60R16 size. They are H-rated and carry a UTQG of 460AA, which means 460 tread life (very long), A for wet braking traction, A for heat resistance. Basically, those are solid ratings.

My tires are a touring tire. They are quiet, last long, and handle wet and dry roads well. The achilles' heel is snow traction, which is lousy. If you are in a warm climate, I'd consider them.

    Steven,

I have a Clarion aftermarket subwoofer in my '01 Forester S. Like the Subaru unit, it is self-powered (100 watts) and fits under the driver's seat. It makes a world of difference in the overall sound of the system. It doesn't shake windows all over my street, but it really sounds great in the car and it doesn't take up any cargo space. I'm not good at playing with car electronics, so I had it installed at a stereo shop in my area. Since you've already upgraded speakers, the subwoofer is a logical step to take your system to the next level. Hope this helps.

  • secretariat73secretariat73 Member Posts: 47
Thanks, Len! If i can be nosy for a second, how much did the aftermarket subwoofer cost you (with installation)? Did you have an amp put in at the same time?

    -Steven-

    Steven,

I got a Clarion PSW160 amplified subwoofer. It cost me $255 installed. I also got an Eclipse #36401 4 channel amp. It runs the rest of the speakers, excluding the sub, although it has the capability to run a sub also. I had it installed under the front passenger seat. The rest of my system consists of a Pioneer Premier DEHP430 headunit and MB Quart speakers (components in front and coax in the rear). It sounds really nice. Crisp, clean and powerful sound, at any volume. After changing speakers, the subwoofer is the one component that made the greatest difference in the system.

    Len,

When you say you had the amplified subwoofer mounted under the passenger seat, do you mean attached to the seat itself or on the floor?
