I have a 1997 Saturn SL1, manual transmission, with 158,000 miles on it. Until recently I've never really had any probmems with it (except I had to replace the shifter cables last year and it drinks oil a lot now) but lately my check engine light has been coming on and sometimes when I put it into 2nd gear, it really loses power (mostly when the air conditioner is on). I took it to Saturn and they said I have a bad EGR and Calibration (P0404), my O2 sensor is slow (P0133), and I need to replace a cracked coolant temp sensor. They want to charge me $440 for all of this and I don't even know what most of it means! Is there any way I can do this myself to save money? I'm a college student and I REALLY don't want to try to pay that much money. Is it serious enough to have to be fixed immediately? :confuse:

    Hello saturnlvr....

I was a poor college student once...here's what you're going to do:

    1. Replace O2 sensor...p0133 means that your front oxygen sensor is bad...open the hood & look straight down...right behind the fan you'll see something mounted on the exhaust manifold with a wire coming out of it - that's what you need to replace...Autozone has an online manual for S-Series saturns link title
the sensor should be under $ 50.00

    2. EGR valve - follow this link to learn how to clean the EGR valve - that should fix your EGR issue link title

    3. Coolant temperature sensor - follow this link to learn how to replace the coolant temp sensor (its sometimes called the "ECTS")link title

By the time you're done you'll probably only be out about $ 100 or less and a little bit of your time...good luck, post back if you need any help...oh and BTW...get used to the drinking oil thing...its part of the Saturn experience... ;)

I have same car with auto trans--had cracked antifreezsensor--replace it with metal one at Autozone-located on recycling resivoir. takeoff EGR and clean with carb spray replace gasket. -clean throttle body with carb spray -rev engine and spray in .
I replaced all sensores and still had po404 and p0221-throttle position sensor on.This had been going on for 2yrs-EGR was clogged-setting off false codes. -spray pintle and turn with screwdriver. then push in and out do antifreeze sensor ASAP-car may surge--speeding up Bob Billieux :lemon: :lemon:

BTW - coolant temp sensor is NOT located on the surge tank - that's the level sensor...

The temp sensor is mounted on the right side of the block as you look under the hood...just below the cam cover....

Need two clamps--a good hacksaw metal chisel hammer and wrenches and maybe extension. If you are lucky and saw flush to old one you might have enough pipe left. Mufflers get compressed when you clamp on you cant just pull off. did twice-dont recommend doing yourself -pain in rear Bob B :lemon:

    Hi,

My Saturn is an SC2. It has serious issues and has cost me $ 1000 in repairs in the last 3 weeks (all cooling system related).

My car has been burning huge quantities of oil
for a very long time ... I take into a shop and they say "it's a Saturn". That's all fine and well but now there is blue/black smoke billowing from the tail pipe. It is hesitating when I try to give it gas, almost as though it i is deciding whether or not it wants to accept the fuel. And now the dreaded "Service Engine Soon" light has come on and is staying on.

The car really is not worth the cost of anymore repairs but I cannot get another car any time soon.

My question is, if I do nothing, how much time or how many miles do you think I might have before it just blows up? Are there any qucick /temporary fixes that don't cost $$$$$$? Do I need to worry about any safety issues other tahn the car dying/stalling out while I'm driving it?

Please help. I'm afraid to drive it to work in the morning ( a 5 minute drive down a major highway).

    How many miles?

Saturn S-Series burn oil...period...there are a couple of ways that owners have been able to minimize the oil burning using Marvel Mystery Oil or Seafoam...do a google search for " mmo soak" to learn more.

As for hesitating...you need to find out what the check engine light is telling you...go to Autozone, they'll read the codes for free and then post them here...

If you do nothing to any car that has a problem, it will eventually blow up...get the codes read and get them posted and we'll go from there. The most common issues that light up the check engine light are pretty cheap and easy repairs....

I have had problems with my car for a long time with the transmission, but am just now looking to fix it. I cant push the gas hard when in 1st gear, because if i do it will get "stuck" in first gear and wont shift to 2nd. Something tells me its a sensor, but I dont know what it could be! Please help. If i ever go over 3,000 or so RPMS in ANY gear, it will NOT shift to the next gear. The transmission has no grinds or anything (i dont know if Auto tranny's do), but something tells me its a sensor not telling the transmission "shift stupid!". PLEASE help me. I was going 25mph in 1st gear on a 55mph road today due to the problem. I really need this fixed ASAP!

    Thank you,

    Breece

I would try to clean carbon off EGR valve. And would change auto trans filter and fulid. Pintle on egr has to move up and down or it will set off codes. Is engine light on? if so go to autozone for free test. I would also clean out throttle body. Take off hose going to it and spray carb cleaner in it-crank engine up when spraying. Wipe off with rag after. EGR-take off and spray and make sure pintle is free wipe clean and replace gasket.

    Hello,

My name is Jackie and I have some questions on what I should do. I have a 1997 Saturn SL1 and have had it for about a year and half. The car has been wonderful, but I have recently had the issue of the service engine soon light coming on. I have regularly had the oil changed and it's not due for another change for another month or so. It doesn't leak anything and I really only have any problems out of it when I am idling at a stop or whenever I have to sit for any period of time.

I am worried that I might have to take it into the mechanic, but I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue and could help me out. The problem it has is that when idling, the engine heats up and goes far beyond what it normal ranges at and then it becomes noisey and begins to smell like it's overheating. Also, it once revved up a lot when I was beginning to accelerate again.

Please help me if you know anything about this or have any suggestions that could help point me in the right direction.

I have a 94 DOHC SL with auto that will not shift out of first gear. Doesn't matter on RPMs you can run it up or leave it slow but it will not shift.

Any ideas? Computer has code 26 in it.

    tdpaul7tdpaul7 Member Posts: 5
UPDATE: I replaced EGR valve, EGR Solenoid and Purge Solenoid. Code 26 is gone.

Car shifts when 1st started (maybe 30 seconds) and then shifts back to 1st and stays there.

Code is now 11 and codes from transaxle are 22, 23, & 24 (missing 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears). I tried the relearning but it didn't help at all.

    Hello Julio,

Your cam cover gasket is shot. Its a common issue with the twin cam motor. Its a cheap and easy fix...go here for good instructions

    link title

Its not a hard job - took me a couple of hours on a Saturday morning (I was taking my time)

    Good Luck,
    John

Thanks alot John so its not a problem with the pistons as some people told me? They just told me to change that lone spark plug every few months or so. :confuse:

    442dude442dude Member Posts: 373
The oil was in the spark plug well not the cylinder once you took the spark plug out, right? When you pulled the wire off of the plug, the bottom of the connector was soaked in oil, right? If the answer to both of these is "yes" then whomever was giving you advice was very wrong Yes, Saturns are notorious oil burners but the oil has to be INSIDE the engine to get burned.

What happens is that there are 4 "rings" in the cam cover gasket for the spark plug wells which will tend to leak...when they do, the oil runs down the side of the plug well walls and collects, mine was actually about 1 inch deep when I went to change the plugs. Make sure you get the right gasket for your year...there were 2 I believe, one for the aluminum cover and one for the plastic type and they're different. Also, you'll have to put a dab of Ultra Blue or your favorite "form a gasket" stuff in a tube on the gasket surface right where the timing chain cover meets the head...you can't miss the spots, you can actually see the spot where they join. Also: make sure you use a torque wrench when you tighten down the bolts that hold the cover on...I believe its about 9 ft lbs of torque and just a hair more if they still leak...not much. I used a Fel-Pro gasket when I did mine and it was really easy to install. It even had tabs which helped you keep it in the right spot while you were putting the cover back on.

If you have any trouble, post back...I'll keep my eyes open for your post...

    Good Luck,
    John

First of all...in whatever branch you'll be serving...all the best!

I'm not sure what a mechanic would charge, maybe about $ 200-300...for comparison, the gasket is about $ 20.00 and a tube of ultra blue is $ 6.00

You should give it a try 1st though - Saturns are ridiculously easy to work on...what don't you understand? Maybe I can help you?

Nursing student here, looking for some help on my 2000 Saturn SL2. While driving, it shifts ERRATICALLY. Then when I accelerate or going uphill, it gets worse, like it's not sure what it wants to do. Sometimes the red low coolant light will come on, but then goes off and stays off. I've kept it filled with coolant. It does not overheat. The SES light is is also on; And, ONLY AFTER driving, then shifting into park, the rpms begin to increase and continues until I shut it off. Please Help, its my only transp.

    WIERD NOISE

Hi i drive a 1997 Saturn SC2.. every time i turn on my car and then make a turn it makes a weird scratching or like juggling sound (its like a soft sounding grinding or rubbing) also if there are steep turns. I have heard its the old suspension coils or something?? maybe even the steering wheel or something? or is it just the ABS working??? :confuse:

    CAR STARTING
Also when i turn my car on sometimes it doesnt even turn on!! i had the starter replaced. . Sometimes it starts just fine (RARELY) but most of the times it make like a rr rr rr (i am pressing lightly and repeatedly on the gas as it makes this sound) if i stop pressing the gas it turns off. . .if i press it too much it makes like a poping sound) that isnt good. . . :confuse: is it just my old battery or what??

I have a 2000 Saturn SL2. According to the ODBII test code of P0444D, I need to replace the EVAP purge solenoid. Is there anywhere or anyone that I could get a step by step repair guide with pictures of how to do this? Autozone does not provide one for this. HELP PLEASE!

I have an SL2 2000 model. I had to take the gauge cluster out. When I put it back noticed that my Tac and Water temp gauges, needles droped, is there a reset button, or anything I did wrong, that would cause this? Thanks for the help.

I've been trying to pin down a problem on my '01 SL1 (240K+ miles). I replaced several parts in the last 6 months:
Intake manifold gasket (thanks to these forums, I found out mine was bad)
both O2 sensors (the first one is probably a year or so old now)
    MAP sensor
    fuel filter
new plugs - old ones were very white and outer electrode was severely worn

I have two problems (maybe related). The car runs excellent at startup and until the engine warms up to operating temp. Then, it suddenly changes completely once it is at operating temp.--it stumbles when accelerating, and on the highway it loses speed on the slightest of hills. I'm currently running without the first O2 sensor connected, because I found that it minimized some of the stumbling. The second problem occurs when it is hot outside (above say 85-90)--it will go down the highway OK (sometimes with poor oomph on the hills), but when you slow down in town--it dies. If you coast for about 5 seconds or so and leave it in gear, it starts back up again. And it will do this repeatedly at lower speeds.

I think the two problems are related somehow. If anyone has had similar troubles or has advice on something to check, I would greatly appreciate your help. Matt

I have a 96 Saturn SL2, the horn was not working. I bought a universal horn, but the problem is that it only has 2 prongs to wire it and my car has a 3 prong relay. I have attempted to wire it but have been unable to get it to work. Does anyone have any idea how this can be done? I have to get the car inspected and it will not pass without horn.

    Hello!

So ... I have a 97 Saturn SL1. The rear door on the driver side just won't open.

When I unlock it, it sounds like it is unlocking, and when I pull on the inside handle, it seems to be pulling something, but the outer handle seems to not be engaging anything.

I managed to get the inside door panel off, but I cannot see or reach back to where the latch mechanism is.

Is there any way I can get this door open?!?

    Thanks!

Lately when I start my car (SL2 – 2000) in the morning the Security light is flashing, Service Light is lit and the Service Engine Soon light is lit and the car turns over but won’t start. sounds like its out of gas. I have the passive security system only. So I turn the ignition switch to run over an over until the security light stops flashing then goes out. This is when the car starts approximately 3 to 5 min. worth of playing time. While the car warms the security light and the service light comes back on an the car runs with no problems. If I turn the car off and re start it the lights clear and don’t come back on. Went to auto zone while the lights were lit to check and there were no codes that come up.. Does any one know what this could be? Is this an easy fix or do I need to bring this to the dealer? Thanks for any help

I have a 1997 Saturn SL1 5 speed manual. When i start it in the morning i get a loud annoying vibration coming from the engine when its cold, and i have a idle problem where the idle shoots up when i change gears, worse when it's cold. anyone know why i'm having this problem? the car has good pick up and has no kind of hesitation when i give it gas. i have 154,000 on the car.:confuse: also after driving awhile when i shut it off for a few minutes and go to start it, it stumbles and stalls once. not always but most of the time. hmm?

Hi, I had a problem with rough start, high idle, had to floor gas pedal to start sometimes.I saw on a forum to replace the engine coolant temp sensor.I got
one at autozone for $10.50 and installed it,took 5 mins. This did not help at all.
I then replaced pcv valve, plugs and wires (they were due to be replaced anyway)
also the O2 sensor.Car ran better but still had same problem starting.Took car
to have engine diagnose.Turns out the temp sensor I put in was after-market,
and Saturn had made an upgrade,I needed the temp sensor with the upgraded
cable harness from Saturn, cost $60.00, $170.00 for diagnose and labor. Now car
starts and idles great.Suggest calling Saturn about replacing the ECTS.
