We have had our car for a month... 2007 Acadia and the stabilitrak comes on 3-4 times per trip. It doesn't shut down but now after reading all these I'm afraid to drive it. Please tell me how to get this fixed. Doesn't seem fair to pay for a car with this known issue

Hey nbaumgardner - I am glad I found your post! I just had a similar experience with my 2011 Acadia SLT2 AWD with 1/8 of a tank left and parked on a decline in front of my house. I left it there for almost 2 days and when I tried to start it, crank/no start.

Needless to say I was p@$@# and had to get it towed to the dealer to have it looked at. They get the vehicle and are able to start it up right away?!?! Spent 4 hours troubleshooting and then said they couldn't do anything else at this point unless/until they are able to reproduce the issue.

My question - were you ever able to get your problem resolved with GM? Anything I can do to get my dealer to investigate more?

    Thanks!

    J

It should be so shameful to GM for so many folks having issues with these vehicles. I purchased my acadia on 5/2008, I have the same exact problems that most of you are having. My dealership service guy told me these things are job security for him. I have 96000 on mine and am trying so hard to get rid of it, but when I try to trade it I get low balled and the worst part the lowest numbers come from GMC dealerships. :(

The dealership cannot duplicate the problem...so they say. If there is no problem they cannot fix it. I contacted GM about this issue; needless to say GM knows that there is a problem with the Acadia's not starting on an incline/decline. A GM representative left me voicemail basically saying if I'm at a 1/4 tank to park on "leveled terrain". I can't believe that there is not a recall or a solution regarding this issue.

I also have a 2008 Acadia that I purchased used 8mo ago and have been really frustrated with the problems its had. We recenty had the stabilitrack issue. Where the light would come on followed by reduced engine power. Which slowed the car down and would not let it excelerate. We took it to our service department and we were told that it was related to the throttle body. And that sometimes the throttle body can get dirty or gummed up and it makes it stick causing the stabilitrack light to come on. So they cleaned the unit and it seems to be ok now. If the problem comes back, we may need to replace the unit.

I want to update you all on what happend.

After I got the parts from RockAuto and my mechanic started
Installing them he discovered that they are USED parts and not new!!

RockAuto you sell used parts to your customers!!?? Shame on you!
At least tell us they are used! No wonder they were so cheap!
  • abulfatihabulfatih Member Posts: 5
Regarding the last message. Maybe i was a bit hasty because i just got of the phone
With the mechanic and he got me upset
I just checked the FAQ in RockAuto and they do mention that sometimes
    They will offer remanufactured parts
Just needed to clear that up. If the car works again i will be happy otherwise i would
Have wasted my money. But for a part that cannot be found antwhere this is better than nothing

Remanufactured parts aren't necessarily bad; depends a bit on the part. (link). I usually associate remans with stuff like transmissions though, but I guess they rebuild injectors too.

But it is a surprise to order something "new" and get something obviously used. It would be better if RockAuto would put a note on the part that it's a reman when you add it to your cart.
  • abulfatihabulfatih Member Posts: 5
This happened to me also. i just put my car in neutral and using the break got out of the decline. once the car was level i were able to get it to start. I think because no fuel could reach the ignition system ( i am not a mechanic but this is what i think)
  • gmcustsvcgmcustsvc Member Posts: 4,252
    fergi1,
Let us know if the stabilitrack issue comes back. Hopefully cleaning the throttle body took care of it, but it not we're happy to check into this further with your dealership.

The no start on an incline with 1/4 tank or less of fuel in the tank could be due to the shape of the gas tank. If the tank is narrower, then on an incline fuel settles on one side of the tank and the fuel pump is not powerful enough to pump it to the engine. I have a Chevy Uplander and Uplander owners (check out Uplander forums) were given the narrow tank by GM as a reason for the no start condition on steep inclines. After hearing this, I make an effort not to go below 1/4 tank. Good luck.

I am reading all of these reports from Acadia owners and their issues with the stabilitrack. Our dealer told us this morning he would have to replace the throttle body. The car is a 2011 and 40k miles. Really GMC. This problem seems to be very common and is not recalled? Unfortunately, we are out of warranty on this and have to pay to replace. Never would have had this problem with Toyota.
  • jpfjpf Member Posts: 496
Stabilitrack issues are problematic with other GM models (see Impala forums). Unfortunately, all vehicles were required to have electronic stability control (ESC), I believe by the 2009 model year. Many vehicles had it available by the 2006 or 2007 model year. I was fortunate when I purchased a 2007 Uplander. It did not have the Stabilitrack option.

We are in the market to buy a newer "used" family hauler. Of course we really like the setup in these cars and the traverse as well. We were warned by an auto broker we work with in Denver and we were still tempted because of the interior layout.
So thanks for posting all your problems because we will definitely look at the highlander or other. Too bad these morons cant figure out how too fix all these problems. At least they lost one customer who already leaned GMC because I have had really good luck with my 01 Sierra.
Anyway thanks you guys scared me off after only reading two pages.

I have a 2010 Acadia slt-1 and drive roughly 25-30 k a year. I have gas receipts to show that the Posted MPG from GM is 16-22. When i got the car with 25k on it, i was getting 21 highway and 17 city. Now i get ,even in the winter (different blended gas) 13-14 in the city and 17-18 tops on the highway. I got the engine/transmission software updated and have new tires. the command module doesn't work right (keeps on the radio when you turn off car and open door with out key in ignition) heat and cooling doesn't work right, but the dealer says everything is OK. And lastly the growing problem with the Power steering that you cant turn into a street or a parking space without the steering power lost. Dealer of course wont change or fix that power steering pump issues. I know that all these power steering problems are now fixed on the 2013/2014 versions of the Acadia. Good car for what you can haul in it, but GM hiding behind the almighty$$ to not put out a recall for all the Lambia products is disgraceful. Hyundai Santa Fe or Honda Pilot is looking good lately.

Who can i send a report to to show that I don't even come close to the posted GMC's MPG for the Acadia? They should see real world information instead of relying on Dyno.

The Acadia gets an A+ for interior bells and whistles, and it seemed great when I tried it out at the dealership. May 28 of 2012, I bought a 2008 Acadia with 81,000 miles on it, because an addition was coming to the family and it seemed to fit the bill. On a limited budget, I had to buy used...I paid $21,000 for the SLT model. In 8 months I've had numerous little problems, but then the power steering and rack went out. $2400 was the estimate to get it fixed, I can't afford that, and this is the second one for my Acadia. This is a well known issue by GMC!!!The power steering issue has nearly killed me twice. I can't trade the car in, because the best I've been offered by a dealership is $13,000 for it, because they know the trouble these models have and they won't touch it. I feel duped and scammed with no one to help me. I called GMC customer service, opened up a case, and was offered a measly $1,000 credit toward the purchase of a new GMC. Really??? This vehicle has ruined me and my family and I have four more years to go! I thought I would take a chance and buy American, but what a fool I turned out to be. This is not right! The GMC mechanic and service advisor told me that this vehicle was nothing but trouble that I need to get rid of it. That's right, the GMC employees at the dealership. I asked them what they would recommend in regards to other GMC vehicles if I were to hypothetically be able to purchase something else. The advisor looked me square in the face and said "I'm not going to lie to you........nothing". I told him I appreciated his honesty. This is 100% true!

To you that've had power steering problems! The rack went out 3times in a yr in my 2007 my local autoshop actually found the root cause. The PUMP is the prob it causes the rack to appear broken but the pump doesn't turn. Won't budge!! $587total cost

So like many others here my 2008 Acadia has the stabilitrak issue. The first visit to the GMC dealer and they could not find anything wrong. The second visit and they replaces the mass air flow sensor $1k, 3 weeks later its back again. This time the dealer calls the GM Tech and they say its another $1k to replace a part with a new design, but cannot confirm this will fix the issue. I opened a case with GM 71-1161670477. I get the District specialist to call me back and Michelle says that because the dealer does not have record of all my oil changes that its due to poor maintenance. Really! I get the 15K maintenance from the dealer regularly and have my oil changed some where else and this is why the stabilitrak is failing? C'mon! So I call Michelle back and ask for a written resolution from her as well as documentation on where in the owners manual it states lack of oil changes will cause stabilitrak to fail, and guess what.....no response. Imagine that. I'd also like GM to provide documentation of how many 2008, 2007 vehicles have had similar stabilitrak issues. I asked Michelle for someone at the next level and she said there wasn't a higher level. So, if your looking for the new owner of GM, just call Michelle, apparently she's at the top.
Hey GM...make it right for anyone that has this issue and quit hiding behind email and phone calls.

I'm also having problems with my steering. we have a 2010 SLT 1 and complained to the dealership about a whining in the steering column about 6 months ago. The dealership reached out to GMC and we were told that it was a cosmetic issue and not covered by warranty. Over the past few months the steering started to lock up when turning into parking spots. Just recently it became a normal occurrence and we brought it back to the dealership. They replaced the steering rack and left ball joint. When we got it back it drove great! That was 5 days ago. Now, the steering has locked up on us again! I'm very disappointed in the Acadia for this and several other reasons. If you read this thread, DO NOT buy an Acadia! I'll be trading mine in as soon as this issue is resolved.
  • scottpar28scottpar28 Member Posts: 6
Yea it is frustrating that you cant turn into a parking spot or a safety maneuver. I did get something changed in the ball joint , but this has to do with power. Of course the service tech or even manager of dealer couldn't replicate it. I too am going to sell the truck as i know they fixed this issue on the new 2013 Acadia, but I will not buy a GMC. Ill loose my shirt because of the complete depreciation of this American car.

My family's story is so very similar to yours. We feel in love with our used 07 Acadia, but less than a year of having it we have spent $3,400 of ours and our relatives money to replace the transmission. Our family too, is on a limited budget and in addition to making the monthly car payments, we must now pay off the loans for repairs. I wish this was the end of our troubles but currently (less than two weeks since last repair) we are having issues with the stabiltrack system.

As I type, my family is on vacation (800 miles ) away from home and received the stabiltrack, traction off, engine reduced power within 150 miles of our destination. We have three children traveling with us and it was very unsettling traveling through MD/DC traffic with little control over the speed of the vehicle. We have called GM but as before we must take it to a dealer for diagnosis (WHICH COSTS)! We are on vacation with an itinerary that includes prepaid tours, etc so there's little time to be on the phone, locating dealers in unknown areas , driving a vehicle that is unsafe. We plan to call the dealer that fixed the transmission for some type of idea on what this will cost us. We have no extra money and feel we should not be having these major issues on a vehicle that is not that old.
I am soooo disappointed with the GM brand and afraid I will only be able to drive this car locally (work and back), when and IF we get it home. GM needs to understand the position many of us are in, traveling and transporting our families in unsafe, unpredictable and unreliable vehicles. We are not sure what to do to get our family back home except pray it holds up until we get back. I wish there was an immediate answer.

I have a 2008 Acadia SLT. While driving on a 2 lane highway I accelerated to pass a slow truck. To my horror, the car continued to accelerate even when I took my foot off the gas pedal. At one point I reached 85 miles an hour. NOTHING would work to slow the car down...I was slamming on the brakes and the brake pedal was "frozen". Finally after slamming on the brakes multiple times with full force from BOTH of my feet, I heard a "pop" (similar to a door latch being released) and the brakes began to respond. Luckily there weren't any cars in front of me because I would have killed someone or myself. SCARED ME TO DEATH!! Thus far, dealer has not been able to find any reason for it. If you have had similar issues, please post!!

I cant agree with you more... i'm done with Gm products my 2009 had nothing but problems. i just bought a 2013 Accord last night and i'm hoping to forget about my Acadia.
  • tiretekmantiretekman Member Posts: 6
I bought my 2009 Acadia slightly less than two years ago, it had almost 48k.
    - Immediately after purchase the battery died, no big deal I thought, I bought a new one. I'm now on the third purchased battery. I don't know why this vehicle kills batteries (it's not the alternator), and it's still not resolved,
    - At nearly 70k, I had the A/C evaporator core replaced (it failed/leaked) - $1200.
    - At 77k, replaced coils on #1, #3 & #4 cylinders - $800
    - Now the power steering has intermittent issues, my wife refuses to drive it as it's hard to handle in tight spaces when it 'acts up'. I'm not seeing anything on this board that makes me feel there's going to be a happy ending to this
So, with all that said....I love the vehicle, but it's a lemon.
Is there any suggestions on where I go from here?
  • 2010slt12010slt1 Member Posts: 3
We almost have the same things going wrong with the acadia!! Our power steering would cut out while trying to park or in tight spaces. The dealer replaced the steering rack, but that wasn't the problem. There is a repair bulletin, that states a less than normal output from the steering pump. The dealer replaced that and solved that problem.
  • scottpar28scottpar28 Member Posts: 6
    tiretekman,
do you know the number of the repair bulletin?
i would think the GMC woman who watches these posts should know about that issue, I think the NSTB should know too.
  • scottpar28scottpar28 Member Posts: 6
I have moved recently, but was almost in accident because of the power steering issue. I went onto NHTSA website and brought up complaints to my surprise of all the power steering problems. Why don't you (GM) just admit to the issue and fix the problem, but that would cost too much for recalls. Its sad that its all about $$$.

People should go to this link and type in car information, then Hit the "Complaints" Tab.

    http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchResults.action
  • tiretekmantiretekman Member Posts: 6
    Scott,
2010slt posted the info about the repair bulletin. I've tried to look it up on the internet, still trying.
I'm getting ready to dump my Acadia, with mixed emotions. The vehicle really fits my needs, but I've got $2k invested in repairs due to poor quality/design, and now I'm facing a power steering unit replacement. Does anyone know how much expense I should expect on that one?
I'm surprised the GMC Customer Service folks that browse these sites haven't responded too.
  • 2010slt12010slt1 Member Posts: 3
The power steering rack cost $1200 and the steering pump was $800!! The repair bulletin was DOC#060232013B
  • phelpswiphelpswi Member Posts: 2
Sarah, thank you for having the notes added. This did prompt a call and after some phone tag Michelle and I did speak. (why these people are only available 8-4 ET is still a question) However the solution was to work with my dealer. I'm not sure why that information was not shared sooner. Unfortunately the dealer is part of the overall customer service problem. Additionally the dealer did not display any level of confidence the fix they were suggesting would fix the issue.

So the group is aware, here are the latest details.

I spent some time digging through my files to find oil change receipts all along wondering how not changing my oil has anything to do with a traction control mechanism. I also started to look for lemon law lawyers and doing more research on this issue. I needed a good second opinion. After some time looking for a good mechanic that is honest and has my best interest in mind I found someone that had time to really look at this. The solution - 2 hours approx. $170 for two vacuum leaks. So not only did he fix the issue he provided insight to all the error codes I was receiving, what other items could cause this issue in the future and proved that you don't need to replace major engine parts or spend $1000 dollars each time you visit the dealer.
So now the negotiation to repair the lemon I'm driving. Since owning this vehicle I've been to the dealer way too many times and did not realize it until I had to do all the research for this issue.
Issues - sunroof leaked, drivers door leaks, headlight goes out (then is recalled after I pay for fix - dealer states that I cannot get reimbursed), xm radio stopped working, regular radio system shuts off for no reason, dvd player does not recognize dvds/cds, navigation stopped working, water pump replaced ($800 at dealer - I find out part is $150 and 2.5 hour job after some research), remote start stopped working. Just the items off the top of my head.

So here are some questions for GM -
What does GM documentation say about maintenance and care of Stabilitrak? What are the car owners responsibility for Stabilitrak?
How many Stabilitrak issues have been reported to GM in the last 10 years?
How many lemon law suits have been filed against GM on this vehicle?
If changing the oil is a key to the maintenance of Stabilitrak, what is GM's responsibility for an oil change gauge that does not match true oil life? If the oil change is the key to Stabilitrak maintenance why are there so many issues that cause the Stabilitrak error message?

My wife just a few days ago calls me and says the rear speakers weren't producing sound. Along with the turn signal noise as well. After parking it and returning 10 minutes later it started working again wtf. Currently has like 45k on it 2011 acadia .. I've had nothing but nightmares with my last few purchases with gm.. not sure what's going on

Traded in a Toyota Land Cruiser for a 2010 Acadia that had 36,000 miles on it because it fit our family’s needs for weekend travel. One of the biggest mistakes ever!!!! The Acadia has had one issue after another. For the past few weeks the power steering was going out during low speed tight turns. Finally had time to take it to the dealer today. They just called and said it needed a new steering pump and rack, and will be $2,000 in repairs. After everything we have put into the vehicle prior, and now this! Are you kidding me? I will never buy another GM vehicle again. I am unbelievably frustrated, as I can't sell the vehicle due to owing more on the loan, and repair loans than I could ever get out of it. This Acadia is gone the second I can make .01 by selling it, unfortunately for my family that will be a while!

My 2008 Acadia makes a rapid clicking noise whenever I drive it during or after it rains. It's kind of like the sound you get when you shuffle a deck of cards, only sharper and louder.

If you've ever attached baseball cards to the spokes of your bike tires...that's the sound. It was cool sound for a bike, not so much for a $30,000 SUV :)

The faster the engine turns, the faster the rate of clicking. It happens whether I'm driving or just in park. When the weather is dry, the clicking stops.

The noise seems to originate near the engine, not the muffler or tailpipe.

Any suggestions on troubleshooting this would be appreciated.

    Kelly

It may be the serpentine belt. Check for wear on the belt. Also, with the vehicle in park and parking brake on, pop open the hood and listen for the noise. Have someone in the vehicle gradually push down on the accelerator. Perhaps, you can pinpoint the noise. Good luck.
