    Nonononono.

That was sampled in GNR's song. It was originally from the greatest movie ever, "Cool Hand Luke". Go out and rent it..... TONIGHT!!! Without further delay.

Why are you still reading this? Get out there and get it done. I'm ashamed you didn't know this!

When did they change the title from "Citizen Kane" to "Cool Hand Luke"?

Woah! According to AFI, 400 years running, "Citizen Kane" is the greatest movie ever. However, I watched it and decided that it was shite. Neat camera angles and all, but is a movie noone really understands, a great movie?

Take the Academy Awards, from 1970-2000, it seems that ever movie that wins an academy award is the most depressing film ever made.

I digress. "Cool Hand Luke" is the greatest movie ever based on my esteemed opinion.

Its actually very easy to understand once you realize what "rosebud" is and how it affects the whole movie. As far as cinimintography goes it is a masterpiece that will never be equaled.

Snake, although this is horribly off topic, I shall continue.

You're agreeing with AFI? "Citizen Kane" is the greatest movie of ALL time? That's like saying vinyl is the greatest recording tool of all time. Yes, it was innovative in its time, but does it apply now? Aren't there much better things out there now?

C'mon, with all due respect, there are many much better movies out there that are MUCH more applicable to the masses. That's like saying T.S. Eliot's "The Wasteland" is the greatest poetry ever produced. Maybe to like .0001% of the population that can understand it. To me, it's a garbled piece of nonsense. In order for something to be great, in my opinion, it must have at least some broad appeal. If you're only reaching .0001% of the population, the "opus" is just a self-masturbatory indulgence.

And that folks, is my opinion on indecipherable pieces of film, writing and artwork.

If being applicable to the masses was the determination of greatness then McDonalds would have the best food.

Yes, it was innovative in its time, but does it apply now?

I defy you to produce any current movie that has the cinematic quality that "Citizen Kane" has. The story line is classic and does apply to today (maybe even more so today).

Actually with the right equipment and an unmarred vinyl record it is the best sounding medium. A high quality vinyl on a very good turntable with the best speakers sounds better then a CD as long as you stay away from the seven channel surround sound stuff.

    Best car movie?

Two come to mind. The first, of course, Bullit. The 2nd, a little more obscure....Ronin (with DiNiro, no less).

BR...I know someone who has about $20K invested in a two channel stereo system. With the right vinyl, and if you're sitting in the exact right position (sweet spot) for listening, it does indeed sound glorious. However, with vinyl, it will never sound better than the very first time you play the record. Because of dirt, needle wear, etc, the sound will deteriorate from that point forward.

Before I get wrist slapped by tidester, one of my neighbors just bought his 16 year old a new Prius. He got it at a pretty hefty discount, according to him. I thought these hybrids were hotter than July 4th firecrackers?

His 16 year old wanted a Mustang. First, I don't think any 16 year old should get a new car. Lots of very good reasons why not, but this is not the place to get into that.

I thought the 16 year old's response was classic when I asked him what he thought of "his" Prius. He said, "it's crap". Clearly, he doesn't understand the performance nuances that the Prius brings to the table...... :) :P

Yup it is kind of like very high quality wine. The best taste is the first one you have right after the bottle is opened. After that the flavors diminish.

One of my clients has been featured in one of the big audiophile magazines a couple of times. I am not sure how much money he has invested in his sound room but I know one of his turntables cost 30,000 dollars when he imported it from Germany.

He is a big collector though so it is just another hobby for him. He collects cars of course but also collects old steam engines/turbines and old telescopes. I think his oldest telescopes are from the 18th century.

I think my last post about suckers got deleted. But if you have seen the movie then you know it is definatley a movie from the Front lines. It seems like everytime i watch it i always sell two cars the next day.

"Is that your name?" " Than you are a owner" What's the question?"

If being applicable to the masses was the determination of greatness then McDonalds would have the best food.

I think you're missing my point, but you tell me. I'm not saying that majority rules. But if there are only a handful of people that can appreciate a movie, then what is the point? To me, that is self indulgent and cannot possibly apply as the "BEST MOVIE EVER". I would like you to ask around and see what some film buffs think is the best movie ever. Will "CK" really come up that much?

I brought up the Academy Awards because I think this is another situation where some folks who aren't connected with the real world vote on a best movie. They always come up with the most depressing movie available. Why is that?

The T.S. Eliot comment, doesn't that make sense? Why produce something if you can't help or edify or impress other folks with it? Why even bother publishing it if the only people who will appreciate it are the .0001% of the population that either THINK they get it or do.

I defy you to produce any current movie that has the cinematic quality that "Citizen Kane" has. The story line is classic and does apply to today (maybe even more so today).

I'm sure there are numerous movies out there that have taken his innovation and run with it. Was it a great movie for its time? I'm sure it was. But I don't see anything that screams "Best Ever".

The movies that impressed me? There a number of them that pop out in my mind. And these aren't best ever, but just movies that I thought were cool.

    Reservoir Dogs
    Pulp Fiction
    Cool Hand Luke
    Being John Malkovich
    Magnolia
    Heat
    Minority Report
Shrek (pretty much anything animated by Pixar is awesome)
    Stand By Me
    Dead Poet's Society
    Full Metal Jacket
    Gallipoli

    That's a small sampling.

    Now you go!

Ok, there were parts that were funny in that movie. All the guys at work think it's awesome, but except for notable parts like the taking his desk outside.... that movie kinda blew.

I'm assuming you like it because of the funny stuff and not the ridiculous plot?

    -Moo
  • madmanmoomadmanmoo Member Posts: 2,039
Agreed. I loved everyone of those movies. The only one that didn't hold the test of time for me was "The Untouchables". I recently watched that movie and it just wasn't as good as it was when I first watched it.

Every other one is awesome then and now.

Yeah I thought the plot gave the business a bad name. I do think the plot was possible though.

But I treid watching it with people who didn't work in the business nad they didn't think it was as funny as I did. I just liked car business side of it. The blonde stealing the car in the beginning, the Saturday morning meetings, The car stuff.

Raiders of the lost ark... all of them
    Star wars... the first three
the outsiders... Do it for johnny
    National Lampoons vacations
    Boon Doc saints
    Heat
    Casino
    Scarface
the Game.... Might have the wrong name starring Michael Douglass and Sean Penn

moo...I like the offbeat movies, but I just couldn't get into Being John Malkovich or Dead Poets Society. I know both are highly regarded by the critics, though.

Gotta concur with the Godfather Movies. I didn't even mind III, although it didn't hold a candle to I or II. Goodfellas....no brainer...probably one of my all time favoirtes.

    More offbeat favorites...

    The Straight Story
    The Station Agent
    From Dusk till Dawn
    Interview with the Vampire
    Underworld
    Chocolate
    Blade Runner
    Forrest Gump

    More filmed concerts/documentaries than movies....

    The Last Waltz
    Stop Making Sense

    Guilty pleasure....

Dancing at the Blue Iguana (admitedly a weak script, but where else can you see Sandrah Oh and Darryl Hannah naked?).

Bladerunner is one of my favorite movies as well. Just fantastic. Gump was good as well.

You know I like "The Last Waltz" if you've seen my profile picture. I'll throw in another pretty interesting musical documentary. It's called "The Festival Express". Check it out. Great film with some great footage of some folks who have moved onto the next world.

Here's another thing. If you're looking for a classic? Don't you want something that stands the test of time? Something you can rewatch? My favorite books are the ones that I can reread countless times, because the message or story is one that I can never get enough of.

Citizen Kane simply doesn't pass that test. Would you rewatch that movie? I passed out from boredom. What's a movie that's fresh? How about "Fight Club". Now that's a movie that will rock your face off. And it STILL does today.

Star Wars? You know why people don't mention that one all the time? Because it's an understood. Anyways.....

    Minority Report?!

You guys have to lay off the Tom Cruise movies... please!!

Anyway... ever notice that you remember John Cusack movies as being better than they seem the next time you see them?

High Fidelity.. Being John Malkovich.. I thought those were fantastic the first time... not so much after that.

Almost anything with Harrison Ford is great... and, I'm not sure exactly why..

I think we're in Too Close To Call land with a lot of these great flicks.

The advent of the DVD has let me do something that I had to wait to do until we got past the bulky VHS tape era... collect Oscar winning films. I think I'm up to about 50 of the Best Picture winners, with assorted other films and even performances that I thought deserved to be added to the pile :shades:

So Citizen Kane is in my pile, as well as the Godfather series, and Indiana Jones, and Star Wars, yada yada yada.

Don't forget those movies that might or might not be cinematic masterpieces, but when you come across them channel surfing you always stop and watch!

Goodfellas has been mentioned (lots of mob stuff...LOL), Casino is another one I enjoy.

Fight Club - good movie, stupid ending. Like, really stupid.

kyfdx - High Fidelity - how can you NOT still love that movie?

In the re-watchables category, I've got to add Princess Bride. As a smooth segue, this reminds me that most Christopher Guest movies fit for me (Spinal Tap, Best in Show).

    Princess Bride is always good.

Somehow I'm able to watch some movies like it's the first time and enjoy them all over again.

Hmmm... I might feel another viewing of The Caine Mutiny coming on!

You know why I like movies like that? The imagination! I can see stuff like that happening. Some of it is a stretch, but what a great idea with great effects. I'm no fan of Tom "Scientology Rules" Cruise's beliefs, but I'm looking for entertainment from my movies. Incidentally, why lay off of his movies? He's been in some awesome ones. Top Gun, Risky Business, The Color of Money, Rain Man..... tons of great movies.

Ok, speaking of John Cusack movies..... there are a few I can rewatch of his.

How about "Better Off Dead"? That one is hilarious. Stand by Me. Grosse Pointe Blank. Say Anything" definitely wasn't as good on second watch, however.

Oh man, I forgot some of my all time favorites. How about ANYTHING by the Coen brothers.

    Blood Simple
    The Big Lebowski
    Oh Brother Where Art Thou?
    Raising Arizona (!!!!!!!)
    Miller's Crossing
    Fargo

    Man, these guys are awesome!

Kirstie...I'm with you on High Fidelity....I don't care how many times I've seen it, I can watch it again.

About Fight Club...it must be a male "thing". I can watch that over and over again. If you've got a good subwoofer in your home theater. it will shake your walls during that movie.

Moo....Christopher Guest is an aquired taste...at least for me. Like you, I know people who adore movies he's involved in. Personally, it's hard for me to sit through them. I'm probably a party of one when I say I hated Spinal Tap.

I'll have to put Festival Express in my Blockbuster que.

    Highly recommended.

Spoiler Alert: Don't read any further if you don't like knowing anything about the movies you're watching.

Apparently in 1970, shortly after a certain giant festival was held, a promoter had a great idea. He would rent a train and put a ton of different musicians on it and send them across Canada playing at different venues. This was release in 2003 and shows some real favorites of mine. The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Buddy Guy, and the Flying Burrito Brothers just to name a few. Really cool to watch and really cool to think about what you would be doing if you were on that train.

High Fidelity... Too many asides to the audience.... I hate that.. a little goes a long way.

Jack Black's character was tops, though!

I love mockumentarys.. Best in Show is a favorite... Waiting for Guffman, also..

The Grifters might be my favorite Cusack movie.

I agree with the Coen movies, also.. I never get tired of Fargo.. and, Raising Arizona? Cage has never been better.. O Brother, Where art Thou? Who knew George Clooney could act?

    I love movies.. :)

Life is Beautiful, the story about the guy and his small son in the concentration camp. I enjoyed both the subtitled and dubbed versions, but I think the subtitled one is the way to watch it so you get the wonderful staccato of the Italian and gutteral German languages that convey so much in the movie.

    Also, Das Boot, in German.

And Passion of the Christ too. A very powerful film.

    Top Hat
    Daddy Long Legs

Here is my point, to appeal to more people you have to appeal to a lower common denominator. In other words to appeal to more people you have to compromise on what could make it great. Sure Wells could have made CK appeal more to the general population but to do that he would have removed much of what makes that movie great.

Ask yourself this, who has greater music Mozart or Weird Al? Now ask who appeals to more people?

    Cool Hand Luke

While a good movie I find that in to many places it tends to drag on.

    Shrek

First one was very good, the second was even better, the third seemed like they just threw something together with little thought. It just didn't have the elements of the first two (although I did like Pinochio not telling a lie).

    Now you go!

    Movies I thought were cool?

Any thing with McQueen (the king of cool).
The Best Years of Our Lives
Glory (look closely you might see me)
    Casablanca
    The Haunting (original version)
    Brazil
    DOA (original version)
    Laura
    Maltese Falcon
    Dead End
    The Big Sleep
    The Guardian
Band of Brothers (Ok its a mini-series)

    Thats enough for now.

Snake, I'm not talking about the masses. I'm talking about appealling to more than the .00001% of the people who act like they get it or the stuffy film buffs who refuse to believe that there is anything better than vinyl available. It may be an excellent movie. The "best of all time" is what has driven me up the wall for a day.

There are quite a few Independent films that I have really enjoyed that don't appeal to the masses. From what I have read, CK did not break any new ground with special effects or camera work. What Welles did was be the first to combine all those elements together at once. Fantastic!

If someone is going to say that a film is the best ever, then there better be some support to back it up. I slipped into a mild coma when I watched that movie. Why, in YOUR opinion, is that the best ever. Because AFI said it was? C'mon, Sheepweasel.

Ask yourself this, who has greater music Mozart or Weird Al? Now ask who appeals to more people?

I don't think that example is the best because "Weird Al" sucks. I think the majority of people would listen to Mozart. At any rate, I know where you're going with that.

The difference here is that I can appreciate the beauty in Mozart's compositions. I "get" it. While I may not break out a Mozart CD every day, I certainly can appreciate it and enjoy it. It also helps that I was a classically trained pianist for 14 years, but that's neither here nor there.

My issue with CK. I don't "get" it. Why would anyone in 2007 watch that movie? Compelling storyline? Comedic value? Learning about the human condition? And if the film can address anyone of those, is there a modern counterpart that can do it in a better way? The resounding answer is "yes", and CK is by no means the BEST movie of all time.

Ahh, yes, forgot about that one. He was in the film "Kiss Me, Kate", which was not a stellar movie musical, but Fosse outshone the other dancers in that. His work was outstanding, however, his choreography is much more impressive on the live stage.

Snake, I'm not talking about the masses. I'm talking about appealing to more than the .00001% of the people

Come on now more than 30 people get and understand CK. Most people I have talked to that have seen the movie can tell me what Rosebud is.

From what I have read, CK did not break any new ground with special effects or camera work.

Not sure what you mean by breaking new ground. It did do a lot of things that were not done before and combined many effects and styles. You want new ground in CK try deep focus (see below) first used in CK. As well as a technique called wipe as well as several new types of camera angles.

Why, in YOUR opinion, is that the best ever. Because AFI said it was?

Well for one thing I was saying it was one of the best or it was the best since the early 80's that was well before AFI come out with their list.

Without writing a thesis on the film I will touch on a few things. The actual filming of the movie. There are several scenes in the movie where action in taking place at different intervals from the camera. Usually a director will focus the camera at what he wants the audience to focus on and change that focus when he wants us to focus on something else. Like when tow people (who are different distances from the camera) are talking the camera will focus on the one talking, when the other talks the focus will switch to the other. this is often unnoticed by the viewer. Instead of doing that Wells uses a technique called deep focus where everything is in focus and the viewer in one way or another decides on what to focus on. Different people will focus on different things. Even the same person will focus on different things when they view the picture again. This allows different people to get something a little different out of the movie.

I could go on with such things as what was the meaning of rosebud? The theme that nothing or no one is as simple as one would seem or try to force. The montage of Kane and his wife eating tells a complex story. The use of lighting, the use of table top photography and how it ties into the opening shots. The theme of how a man changes throughout his life and how power effects him. Not to mention how this movie influenced many film makers afterwards.

    C'mon, Sheepweasel.

Now that was a cheep shot.
