After 2-3 years driver’s side seat broke. You can drive but it would not pass inspection. Murano 2006. There was a time when Nissan was good for 100000 + miles, now after 60000 everything brakes.
  • mikev4mikev4 Member Posts: 11
Yes. It is hard to get used one.

I have a 2005 Murano. The driver's seat completely detached from the vehicle. Repair cost was $1000. I was advised by my local service manager to contact the NIssan Customer Service number. My call was handled courteously, promply and efficiently. Nissan split the repair cost with me 50/50. I still don't think a seat should separate from the vehicle, but I was willing to take the deal. The only other option was to trade the car and I didn't want to do that if I didn't have to.

I am having the same problem with the right side of the seat not moving. No broken bracket yet. From reading your previous post it sounds like the gear on my seat is stripped. Any suggestions since I have no way of making a metal gear? How difficult was it to get to the gear to replace it? I was told it would cost about $1,000 to fix since you can't buy parts - have to buy the entire assembly.

    Hey navdocjon,

I am in the Nissan repair center now after being told my car had the same thing and it would cost $800. I have an '05 Murano with 80k miles on it with the extended warranty and despite my speech about it being a safety issue and a known defect, I was shot down. Since my car is up for inspection in the next few weeks, I bit the bullet and told them to go ahead with the repairs. I was encouraged by your posting about Nissan willing to pay 50% of the repair cost when you went through Nissan Customer Service. What did you say to them to get what you did? Did you get reimbursed the money already paid for the repair or did you not get the repair and they credited you somehow? Any other information about your process would be appreciated.

    Thank you very much.

I am wondering if this description is what everyone has or seen ? My 03 MO seat travels straight only about 3" in the center of the track when you try to go back toward the end it starts to turn to the left and when you try to go all the way forward close to the end of travel it goes to the right ..I guess my question is this the start of a broken seat base ? or what ? I should mention that I did change out the gear on the seat about 30m ago but no one uses it but me so there is no need to keep adjusting the seat .
  • skyslateskyslate Member Posts: 7
Just for the what it is worth department, I bought the seat frame from a supplier on line in Arizona and had the local body shop change out ($60). I think I had less than $500 in the whole matter.
I would strongly encourage everyone faced with this problem to file a complaint with the National Transportation safety board. It is an issue and until enough people complain, they will not do a thing.
I am out $500 for a design defect.

i am glad to find this forum and learn there is a problem with the seat. i have had this set welded one time and it lasted about one month and broke again. i can not find a replacement seat. has anyone had luck getting Nissan to cover part of the cost to get this replaced??

    thanks

The seat on my Murano was not moving on the right side, but left side was twisting to the right and making a noise. Took it to Ken Ganley Nissan Dealer in Medina, OH, they charged a $99 plus tax for diagnosis, said the gear was broken and the seat motor unit needed to be replaced for $1520!! I told them to cancel the repair after reading this forum, had my son look at the seat - he had the "broken" gear out in 5 minutes! I'm ordering the part from Odometer Gear and replacing it for the cost of the gear - $65! What a rip-off the Dealer is, I will never go back to them again.

I replaced the nylon gear in my drivers seat last week. I will caution you to be careful when you put the gear back on so you don't break the metal sleeve that is used for the memory seat feature. It is awkward working on it in place, and while fightin to get the gear to slip in place I somehow broke the sleeve into 3 pieces. I think it slipped out of position, and when I tapped the gear it broke.

I just used the plastic gear that came with it, so now the seat will not move forward or backwards when I press the memory seat button, but can still move it manually.

very good instuctions, used these yesterday and took me about 3 hours (including drinking a couple Corona) to do the entire project. took seat base to buddies house and he welded it up for me and it is as good as new. you are correct, this design is a very bad one.

once again thanks for the details.

Hi,, The best way to deal with this seat issue is to take your seat out of the car today. And weld the necessary supports based on what all of us have seen as the weak spots. This will be far cheaper and less work and time than waiting for it to break. The repair is far easier and cheaper on an operating base and track that on a broken one.

Time and energy spent at the dealer is a waste. you can go on a great weekend vacation for what you will save. We all know that Nissan is not going to come through for you . They have not for years. They will not change now.
NTSB has closed the file so unless you can show death or serious injuries forget it.

I don't know if you guys are aware, but in 2009 Nissan released the individual parts needed to repair this issue. Parts will run around $300. They are suppose to be redesigned parts.

    Check out TSB #: NTB05-043d

    Here are the part numbers:

    DESCRIPTION PART # QUANTITY
    Lifter Link Assembly FR-LH 87458-CA08A 1
    Lifter Link Assembly RR-LH 87473-CA00A 1
    Lift Motor-FR-LH (w/Memory System) 87454-CA61A 1
    Lift Motor-FR-LH (w/o Memory System) 87454-CA01A 1

The 1st 2 parts are for the broken/cracked seat frame issue. I think they run about $300 combined online.

The last 2 parts are if your gear is stripped. Its still better to buy just the metal gear from the 3rd parties than buy these parts.

The TSB has great, step by step tear down and rebuild instructions with photos.

This thread provided the best advice on how to fix the power seat issue. steel and ManguM posts are extremely helpful, particularly #84 and #99. I went through a 'dry run' to see how hard it was prior to buying the $65 gear. it took me just over 90 minutes to get through it and understand the process . I can't tell you how exciting it was to hear the motor working.
Once I received the gear removal was a breeze, 10 minutes, make sure you know about the magnetic collar. once the gear was in place, I tighten the nut to the mark I made. If seat goes beyond the mark while tighten, simply tighten it until snug then ‘ loosen' it until the mark it hit. it took another five minutes to complete the installation. Overall it took me two hours and $70(delivery) with the great help from this blog. Thanks everyone!
My small additions to the steps are as follows
Removing the nut. prior to removing the nut mark where the right side of the seat is on the rail. I removed the nut using a 10mm deep socket ratchet and kept loosening, the seat will move forward on the rail,, because you marked it don’t worry, eventually the seat will stop moving and the nut becomes loose. as denoted in other posts, keep track of all the washer and collar. I took a picture in case.
Putting the new gear in place was a bit tricky because the screw and gear are not round. MAKE sure you have the flat sides of the gear lining up with the flat side of the screw. it may not go on as easy as the old one came off. I lightly, emphasis on lightly, tapped the gear into place with the back end of the ratchet and an open pair of pliers and the gear slide into place. if this doesn't not work for you, find the post where sandpaper is advised. it's important to emphasize to not bang the gear into place.
    GOOD LUCK!

    @themaddhatter,

Thank you for the clear explanation how to fix the broken seat !
I'm from the Netherlands, but found that no dutch forum has the solution, so I used yours !! It worked fine for me and I've copied your link to a dutch forum.

    Grtz,
    Dennis from The Netherlands.

Hey thanks. This really did reset the airbag light on my 2009 Murano. For those who are wondering about the keyless start, do the following. Simply depress the push button start 2 times to get you to the on position, then follow the above procedure each time.
  • gaettigaetti Member Posts: 1
Just wanted to send a thanks to The Maddhatter. It took me about 3 hours to get it out and back together again but only cost me $25. Thanks again!

I have the same problem. Discovered it 1-29-2011, The dealer said $800 for seat track assembly and another dealer said $1000-Phoenix,AZ.

I researched the schematics for the Drivers seat and it is simply a bolt and bracket. Just cannot locate the parts.
Filed complaint. Funny thing around Christmas I detailed the car and ran a vacuum cleaner and found a bracket and few screws, I thought it was from hauling a insulation blowing machine from Home Depot and threw them away not long after the seat broke and tips over . It is the Drivers Side bolt and bracket closest to the door side of the car. from sitting inside its on the rear left.

About 6 months ago, the weld on my wife's driver's seat (2007 Murano) broke - so based on information found online, I was able to remove the seat and re-weld the bracket - problem solved! Last week, the driver's seat went sideways, as the right side was stuck, and the left side went forward-ish. Took the seat apart again, found the infamous gear, broken in two. As vansvstar above mentioned (Thank you!!!), I went to odometergears.com and found the gear I needed (for $65 + $4 shipping). Certainly alot for a little plastic gear, BUT a whole lot better than a $600-$1000+ repair bill. Seat is working fine now, and yes, I HAVE turned the easy exit feature of the seat OFF - and it'll remain OFF - as everyone's should!

Returned from dealer with $1100 estimate for repair.Talking to Nissan about reimbursement. Called Connecticut Attorney General's office to document where my case goes with Nissan. If there are any other CT Nissan Murano owners with similar issues please contact me. Thanks! Will keep aware of where this goes!

After owning the car for just over a year, this comes along. Dealer wants $1000.00 to replace poorly designed metal bracket, towards the rear of the seat. Waiting for Nissan to give me some good news on fixing the problem. Dealer also advised me, that both A arm bushings, and struts need to be replaced as well. Grand total $2900.00!! This car has 80,000 miles on it. Can't wait to see what the next 20,000 miles will bring.

Live in South Dakota but I am having the same problem. 2005 Murano - $1318 estimated repair, going to try to find replacement parts at salvage yard and do it myself I guess.
  • ryanodineryanodine Member Posts: 2
This was previously posted but FYI you can now just get the part that breaks. I got it from the dealer for $116. Took a couple hours to disassemble the seat and to replace the part. The new part is much more reinforced that the original and I doubt it will break again.

The part is 87473-CA01A (Drivers Seat Lifter Assembly)

Nissan consumer affairs has given me the news I was looking for. As they put it, " As a good will gesture, we will replace the driver side seat bracket." No Charge! :)

Hi Cali22 - Who did you contact at Nissan about this issue? Our 2006 Murano seat just failed and I certainly think it's worth a try. Glad to see someone is having luck convincing Corporate that this is a serious design flaw that needs fixing.

    Thanks!

I had the seat fixed by removing it, which was a very simple process, then my brother and his friend welded the broken bracket. Very simple fix and beats paying the dealer $1000.

Next my radio started making noise, a separate issue and I took that to Jeff's Pro Audio here in PHOENIX, and they saudered a wire that came loose, that was $124 to fix the sound and they implied that when the dealer replaced the Cd player that caused the radio to fail. Several people tried to tell me it was the speakers but I ha a feeling it was a wire since it came on and off when going over bumps and then overheated and shut off.

NEXT. to fix the fuel tank issue and that is going to be around $600 to replace the fuel tank assembly.

Did I mention that my paint is peeling off the drivers door because Nissan had a defect in the undercoat /primer and that is not a warranty item either. Disappointed in this car for what I paid for it.
Next car will be a Kia with a 7 year warranty.

We don't allow the posting of third-party information in the forums as we have no easy way to ascertain if the other person consents to the release of their information, like their name, on the forum. Individual phone numbers are not allowed for the same reason, plus they change and we get complaints, sometimes years later.

I have a 2003 Nissan Murano. I purchased it new, bought the original 5 year warranty and the extended drive train warranty, every one offered to me by Nissan. I have had the car serviced exactly as called for. It now has 86K. The FRAME of the drivers seat has broken, which allows the seat to rock back and forth, partially strangling the driver with the seatbelt. This is a break in the frame where there is a weld. I have discovered that others are having this problem as well, so many that there are YOU TUBE POSTINGS on how to repair this! Nissan wants $ 900 for the part, and two hours labor! I contacted Nissan and asked them to help with the repair, since this is clearly a manufacturing defect. Evidence of this is that the new seat frame is now made differently in this exact spot. William Crockette, a Regional Specialist for Nissan in the west (But he is in Tennessee???) refused to offer any assistance at all for the repair. Nissan is clearly showing a lack of desire to stand behind their product. I am left trying to find over $ 1500 to repair a car that can not be driven. Oh, it took several calls over two weeks to Nissan to even get this response. Meanwhile, I am stuck without a car that I have carefully maintained. If you are interested in forming a Class to pursue Nissan on this issue please reply to my email which I have made public on this site.

The federal gov. looked into this and Nissan redesigned the part that has
a design flaw, but since there have been no deaths or serious accidents
the fed. gov. did not fault Nissan. Frustrating!
  • ryanodineryanodine Member Posts: 2
It was previously posted several places in this thread that they now sell just the bracket that breaks and you don't have to buy the entire seat frame. If you can do it yourself it will cost about $120 and 2-3 hours.

    Hello
I am here in Houston and the seat just broke on me this morning. Funny thing was wow I knew I had gained a few pounds but I am not near my heaviest as I was with my Xtrerra....
I see where you were able to get Nissan to pay 50%, please explain to me exactly what steps you took as I am a single mom and cant not afford the $1500-1900 I have been seeing on the internet for the repairs.
    Thank you for your help

Mine was for replacement of P/Ns 87351-CA00A and 87473-CA01A for a grand total of $844.30 (of which I paid $422.15). Basically, I filed a case with Nissan Consumer Affairs, was denied, provided the resolution info (i.e., Case #) that Cali shared above, and stayed on them like a mad dog for weeks until they finally offered to cover half. Feel free to use my case # as well (7134872) but Cali's may be better since I only got a 50% break. This is becoming a big problem and I think Nissan is starting to realize it. BTW, I ended up selling my Murano. Loved the vehicle but the issues were beginning to pile up. Good luck.

Just joined the broken seat club on my 2006 Murano 119,400 miles on it. Wow, talk about a major surprise. I filed my complaint with Nissan today and we will see what happens. Am I missing something or is Cali'case number not posted? Anyways, I have recently owned the Altima and Xterra before purchasing the Murano. I hope they value the customer because I will certainly drop Nissan if they do not sack up behind this garbage design.

And drewster, thank you for posting your case number. I may have to use it !

I recall that Cali's post containing the Case # was removed because it contained personal contact information. My notes have it as Case # 7140374. Good luck.

Another addition to the seat nightmare of a 2005 Murano with 60k miles...

I first brought mine into my local shop who suggested I contact Nissan (thought was nice).

After I opened my file with corp I was told to go to a Nissan Service center for an estimate/diagnosis to escalate the case / start working with a regional specialist.

The service center told me there is a $118 diagnosis fee which wasn't communicated to me when filing the case . I refused to pay and left with the car. This time when I called back corp I wasn't so nice esp when they talk to you like they are an automated system. I am currently waiting to hear back from a "supervisor" since they were "all in a meeting" when I called. I am supposed to hear back from one in 4-8 hours.

Does anyone know the specific name of the bracket you can replace without getting an entire new track. I don't have much faith in Nissan customer service doing the right thing here.

If anyone has the right "formula" to get Nissan to take responsibility for their hazardous fault I would appreciate it.
