Hyunda Azera Transmission Questions

Our '07 Azera accelerator has a problem when pushed to W.O.T. (wide open throttle), it stays there! (Almost brings on screaming flashbacks of 60s-70s-80s Chevy V8s with broken motor mounts!) It's happened to me a dozen times or more, mostly when trying to pass, or merge safely into a fast-moving flow of freeway traffic. Only occasionally does it NOT stick.

It was checked by the dealer who "lubed the cable", which seemed to handle it, but only for a couple of days. Then it was back to its old tricks.

When the frequently-noted "hesitation" is combined with the sticking accelerator, the vehicle is a real handful. I've instructed my wife re. how to deal with it should it occur, but I sure hope it doesn't. Just the hesitation is very dangerous, but in combination with a delayed but stuck W.O.T. the threat of the potential damages are all too real.

When the Azera visits the dealer again this week (dealer also denies it has suspension 'clunking, hesitation, or rough idle!), I'll definitely take a service writer and/or tech for a test ride to eliminate their perceptual difficulties.

Any other Azera owners experienced the sticking accelerator syndrome?

If my car experienced that type of problem I would immediately contact the dealer and Hyundai and not drive it until I was assured that the problem had been corrected.

Is the Azera accelerator "drive by wire?" (electronic) and not a cable setup??
  • purplishpurplish Member Posts: 4
I'd be willing to bet this IS NOT a transmission problem! So why is it titled as such, and not listed as "accelerator pedal sticking"???

The Azera throttle control is a drive-by-wire setup. This means that the throttle is controlled by a servo that is driven by the computer. I do not know if there is a cable between the control servo and the throttle itself. In any case, the problem can be a sticking throttle butterfly (most likely), a sticking rheostat connected to the gas pedal (next most likely), a faulty servo (less likely), or a computer fault (not likely).

I have a 2009 Azera that has had a noticeable shudder between 40-50 MPH since I got it. It now has 1,500 miles. The dealer tells me it is "torque converter clutch lockup" and it is normal. They say Hyundai has not adressed the problem in the ECM that controls it. I have been driving for more than 50 years and I think they are nuts. No other car handles like that, not even their Sonata or Genesis. They have already replaced the tires and re-alligned all the wheels. Any ideas? I am meeting with their District Parts and and Service Manager in 3 weeks.

I bought a used 2008 Azera with 7900 miles on it. When accelerating from a stop between 10-20 mph there is a noticeble shudder that dissappears after 20 mph and is not resent 0-10mph. When driving at higher speeds on the highway there is a minor vibration but nothing serious. Anybody got any ideas what it might be?

Ask your Hyundai dealer to do the Wide Open Throttle TSB. It is a software flash to the ECU.

Also, ask him to reset the computer so that it learns & adjusts to your typical driving style. Azera's transmission 'learns' and adapts the the transmission to driver's style & stores the information. Maybe the previous owner was heavy-footed.

Thanks---I hope that's all it is.

I had the technician look it over and he found a broken motor mount which was replaced. It seemed to help but there is still the same shudder between 10-20mph in 2nd gear. He said there was a TSB on the car that he took care of but it wasn't related to the transmission. Do they not want to do the work because I didn't buy the car there? Is there some reason that he doesn't want to do the flash? Is it a big job? I don't know, I'm confused as to why it hasn't been addressed. Anyone got any ideas?

It shouldn't matter which Hyundai dealer you take the car to, they must all honor the warranty. I currently do not take my Azera to the dealer where I bought from simply because it's inconvenient for me. Flashing the transmission is hardly a big job...it simply takes connecting the computer to the car and running the program. I've had my tranny flashed a few times, it only takes a few minutes. Why the mechanic wouldn't want to do it is beyond me...unless he's not a certified mechanic and doesn't know how to do that type of thing. :confuse:

You can always do as we are doing. File under your states Lemon Law. :lemon:

Find out the law in your state and follow the guidelines, and either Hyundai fixes it or is forced into buying it back.

    Good luck.

My understanding of the Lemon Law was that the same repair had to be done 3 times unsuccessfully.

Lemon laws vary from state to state, so one always needs to find out what the requirements are in one's own state. Just fyi. :)

The car has no power when it does this. Is this normal?I don't recall it doing this before.I am forced to use the tip tronic to get a lower gear. Since it does not display the gear it is in, I have no way of knowing what gear it it in but I suspect 4th if the rpms are that low. Can this be adjusted? Car has 25k on it.

I have an '06 Azera. The torque converter will lock up with the car in 5th gear at around 40 MPH. At that point the RPMs are around 1200. Gentle rises and/or small tip ins of the throttle will cause the torq converter to unlock and the RPMs to rise to 1500 or so ( while still at 40 MPH ).
I drive the car pretty gently, therefore the adaptive transmission in my car has learned to hold higher gears in the interest of economy. However, if I go to anything over half throttle under the abovementioned conditions, the car will unlock the converter and drop to 4th gear. It is difficult to get a downshift to an even lower gear without flooring it though, and there's quite a delay in that, too. That does become a problem when I need lots of acceleration, such as when merging unto a freeway after traversing a ramp at around 35-40MPH. On one ramp in particular, where at certain times of the day I anticipate heavy freeway traffic, I have to use the tiptronic and manually select 2nd or 3rd - it's just the nature of the beast.
Other posters have suggested a reflash of the transmission, but my feeling is that it will soon adapt and operate exactly the same as before. IMO, if you purchased your car used then a reflash may be in order so that it can adapt to your particular driving. Otherwise, do what you're doing and try to anticipate a situation where the car needs to be in a lower gear and use the tiptronic.

    I have an 08 Azera.
Can someone tell me when (mileage) the transmission fluid needs to be changed?
The owner's manual seems to be confusing about this.

    Thanks,
    Jerry

30k to keep your 100k mile warranty intact
  • jamazerajamazera Member Posts: 149
no way.....my '06 warranty says 105k miles...30k miles is for severe conditions
  • allmet33allmet33 Member Posts: 3,557
Never heard of tranny fluid that would be good for 100k miles. I've had my transmission serviced and the service manager told me that 60k miles is the usual. Speaking of which...gotta get mine in for service!

    whatever u say...it's your car
  • jamazerajamazera Member Posts: 149
this is listed in the 2006 owner's manual under vehicle maintenance requirements ...I personally change @ 70k...the new synthetic trans fluids can be in service for 100k miles if so desired especially the Lucas fluid....my "06 has only 35k miles, so I'mnot due a change for a while...
  • cobrazeracobrazera Member Posts: 352
THX for the info. My '06 has 44K miles and it's good to know I don't need to service the tranny for a while. 30K mile service did sound extreme. I'm not a fan of unnecessary maintenance - "if it ain't broke don't fix it". I just changed my original air filter last year, no change in performance or mileage, just figured it was time. Never over 5K on an oil/filter change, tho.
  • jamazerajamazera Member Posts: 149
changed to a k&n got one for $20 a deal....haven't changed tranny fluid, but when I do it will probably be the Lucas synthetic...also changed to Hawk Pro ceramic pads last year....did see a little difference in stopping..not as dirty.. oil/filter change once a yr w/ Royal Purple syn racing oil or Amsoil syn....only put 4k miles a year at the most on it

My 2007 Azera now with 145,000 miles has developed a jerky shifting problem (automatic shift). It occurs after highway driving and slowing down at a tollgate, without coming to a halt (EZ pass gate). Upon acceleration there is a moderately serious jerk in shifting from gear 3 to gear 4.

Dealer service people did not detect any faults and reset the defaults in shift-values. the problem did not go away.

any suggestions you have are very welcome!

Manohar...glad to see someone with as many miles as I have. Sorry to hear of your transmission problem. I'm assuming that you've maintained the transmission by getting it serviced at regular intervals. Here's one thing you can try (don't laugh). Disconnect your battery and leave it disconnected for about 5-10 minutes. Re-connect and drive. See if the "reset" works.

My reason for this suggestion... my 2006 (with just over 145k miles) began running roughly (at highway speed) and almost seemed like it would cut off as I slowed down. Pressing the gas pedal made the car speed up, but slowly and the car would shudder as it did. I stopped, turned it off and disconnected the battery, re-connected after a few minutes...beleive it or not, the car ran find afterwards.

If that doesn't do anything for you, I would suggest a transmission specialist to take a look at it. I have heard that some Hyundai technicians don't like to find problems they will have to repair. They would rather make you think you need to get a new car instead.

    Keep us posted.
