:lemon: I also made a bad choice in a new Equinox purchase. The seats have to much of a bucket shape and seats scoop up on each side of your legs. The seat will not adjust forward enough to give you any comfort. The longer you drive or ride in it the more you are in pain in it and a long time after also. I felt pressured from the dealership when they told me that if I didn't take the Equinox now, I probably wouldn't get one until maybe fall that they are so hot. Well we bought it and it has the multi-positiion seat controls, but I am having the same problem you are with the seats causing low back pain and causing my driver leg to fall asleep so I can't feel the gas or brake pedals. It's a scary & hurtful feeling. I have had many discussions with the dealership and also many with GM. I have spoke to 3-4 GM Specialists and they called to tell me that they had a solution to my problem. Their solution was to not do anything about the problems only after stringing us along for 4 months of them saying they will take care of this but after all of this time of torment & pain- GM won't do anything as they tell us now that we have signed the contract. The dealership won't do anything about the seat either. They offered to take the new Equinox in on trade as a used vehicle and have buy another new vehicle with us paying commission, taxes, plates, title & etc again! GM asked why the dealership couldn't replace the seat with another seat that is comfortable. Why can't the dealer and why can't GM? I am willing to do this but GM or the dealer is not. We traded in an Impala SS and loved it. I asked the dealer to put in an Impala seat in the Equinox and they said they can't do this. GM specialist suggested that another seat be installed but withdrew. We have been GM customers for over 30 yrs & they or the dealership in  IL. won't replace a seat for us to keep us safe & happy. This is a dangerous and sad situation. I also noticed that there is a big clunking with the power seat when it goes down and the hard shifting of gears from 20, 40, 60 m/p/h. I also have the steering wheel cutting my hand when I turn the corners. It has a sharp area where the silver trim is supposed to be connected with the rest of the wheel but sticks up enough to catch and cut my hand. GM knows of this issue and told me to make and appointment with the service department at the dealership. I wish I had my Impala SS and not this PAIN!

Have you adjusted the tilt-telescoping steering wheel? Perhaps an adjustment of the wheel, either pulling it towards you or pushing it away from you, in conjunction with adjusting the seat will make it more comfortable. The lever is on the underside of the steering wheel on the left...release the lever, adjust the steering wheel in & out and / or up & down to suit your comfort level. Similarly adjust your seat up/down, fore & aft.

Seats are not interchangeable for safety reasons -- they are engineered for each specific model to work with the safety belts, airbags, crush zones etc. on the vehicle. Your dealer advised you correctly.

I would not categorize the vehicle as a lemon -- sounds as though the vehicle works fine, but you just don't like it.

My '02 Impala (bought brand new) gives me lower back discomfort even to this day. It has a seatback that bulges outward at your lower back. It's been referred to as the "fist in the lower back". This causes me problems because my lower back does not curved inward very much - in fact, doctors have told me that it's pretty much "flat". There is no adjustment on my Impala's seats to pull the "fist" inward, nor has the "fist" flattened any in 8 years and 133k miles of driving, so I just live with it.

I test drove several Chevy Equinoxes and did not find the seats uncomfortable at all. In fact, I would say the seat configuration and shape are some of the more positive factors about the car. My wife, who generally is very critical of automotive seats, also found those in the Equinox to be quite exemplary.

There was a time in the '80s and '90s when domestic automotive seats were absolutely terrible but that era is now long past and domestic seats are easily the equal of the imports IMHO.

I also own a Chevy Impala SS (2006) and the seats are downright fabulous. I can drive for eight hours a day on the interstates without a hint of back pain, leg pain or fatigue. Of course, the SS is a superb car anyway in all respects and I intend to keep mine a VERY long time, especially in view of the fact they do not make them anymore. There is nothing in this world like an American small-block V-8 for sheer torque and driving pleasure!

My main quibble about the Equinox is that it needs a bigger engine in the six cylinder configuration. Forget about the four altogether!

There is one thing better, and that is a big block. Nothing better than a big block with small block 2nd. :shades:

GM should throw the Malibu seats into the NOX. I drove 8 hours a few weeks ago, very little discomfort, best seats I have ever had.

I do think everyone is different though, no seat will satsify everyone.

OK has anybody else noticed that the button on the passenger seatbelt that keeps the belt tongue from falling to the floor is in the wrong location (about 12 inches too low)? As a countermeasure for the incorrect placement they have added heavy stitches across the belt where the button should be to prevent the tongue from falling to the floor. What a crock of crap! I took it to the dealer and they looked at another Equinox on the lot and said it looked the same, so they didn't replace it. I want a new seatbelt, eventually the thread will stop working and I will have to pay big bucks to replace the thing.

I see what you are saying. You are absolutely right. The easy fix would be to put on of those stoppers where the thread is. Looks like somebody did some bad designing! You can make it go bad now and force them to fix it under warranty.

Just to give all a background before my question. I live in central Ohio which is mainly flat. Just East and Southeast of us is very hilly. We travel to Pittsburgh 3 or 4 times per year which is very hilly to Mountainess terrain. Also we travel to the Myrtle Beach area yearly and the trip goes through the mountains of WVA, Virginia, and North Carolina. Would the 4 be enough engine to carry 3 Adults and luggage without straining the engine? Most of our driving would be around the Columbus area, so I would think the 4 would be enough. I am concerned that it would not be enough with the AC on while traveling to Pittsburgh or down south. We have been considering an LTZ to replace our 2004 Mercury Mountaineer.

If you got the 4 you won't blow the engine or anything. Just don't have the cruise on and don't expect it to maintain a steady speed while going up the mountains without kicking into a lower gear. If most of your driving is in central Ohio, and you drive a lot, get the 4 for the better gas mileage and deal with knowing it will lack some power when you take those trips to Pitt and FL. If you don't drive much (less than 10k/yr outside of the trips) then get I'd get the 6 so you're more prepared for the trips. That's my opinion anyway.

I'm also not sure how far away you are from where it gets hilly, but test drives should be 50-75 miles in all types of driving conditions. If you aren't too far away from hills, try driving out there on the test drive and see how it does.

I also purchased a 2010 Equinox LTZ in Colorado Springs in Oct 2009. I fell in love with the way it handled and the comfort and design. After having it a few months we started having issues. The first issue was with the DVD Player. It would shut off during the movie and no one had touched the controls to stop it. Had this check 3 times so far and hope it is working properly now. We are going on a trip so we will check it out then. Then we had to take it back for several recalls. A few months later the car would not start. Got it back and next thing I know the car will not start. Turn the key and nothing wait try again after several tries the car starts. Took this to the new issue to dealer three times each time saying they could not find it. Finally on the 3rd try they found that a wire end was not making proper contact and loose. They replaced the wire end and tightened it, so far no problems. Still when I get in the car I wonder if it will start again. Next, the driver’s back passenger window would not go up. Took it in and they replaced the motor. Then I hear a clunking sound around the driver’s side. Had this looked at several times finally they found out that the strut went bad. So they replaced it by taking out a strut from a new car on the lot, as it would take to long to rebuild one I was told. Get it back and then the passengers back window’s motor goes out. Had to wait a week for part to come in and in the mean time problems with the backup camera appear. I was backing out of driveway and the camera would not go on. Stop went forward and then went back in reverse nothing. Park the car, shut off engine and then restarted car and backed up again, Nothing! Went to work, called dealership and they would look at it when I took the car in for the back window. A few days later I went to airport to pick up a guest and after reversing and putting in drive the camera would not turn off. The camera stayed on for several minutes before it shut off in the drive mode. The dealer reprogrammed the camera and so far it is working OK. The first time I called Chevrolet HQ I was assigned a great person to deal with my case. They called me back if I left messages and took the time to take care of my concerns. This was when after the car did not want to start. At this point I was asking Chevy HQ for an exchange of vehicles as I no longer had confidence on the car. They declined and offered a couple of oil changes to me, which I declined also. Then, when we started having additional issues, I called Headquarter and was assigned an individual named Regan. The customer service I have received so far from this gentleman is atrocious. I have left numerous messages for him, with instructions to call me on my cell phone and each time he has called my home and left a message, when I am at work. Each time I have called him back and all I get is his voice message, but still have not been able to reach him. I called the customer service desk and explain my problem. Each time they assure me they will give him the message and have him call me back on the cell phone. This has yet to happen. The last time I called Chevrolet(June 16th, 2010) I asked for a supervisor and explained why I needed one. I was on hold off and on for over 45 minutes with no resolution and still did not get supervisor. I asked my service representative and other Chevrolet employees at the dealership, if they have had or seen any other Equinox’s with this many problems. They all stated that they have not seen or heard of any other vehicles and did not know what else to say. One employee made a comment that they truly believed that there is always that one car off of the line that something goes wrong with it and that I had gotten that car. Needless to say, I have come to know the people at service department and other workers rather well. Since, I am always there for one issue or another. Even the sales person who sold me the car stated he felt bad. We have two other Chevy vehicles and have had no problems with them. All I am asking is that Chevrolet please exchange this vehicle for another Equinox. We have less than 10,000 miles on this car and the problems started when we had less than 5,000. I have talked to the dealer also about exchanging this vehicle for another one with no encouragement given that it will be done. I have posed the question to the Service Manager “How would you feel about this situation if it was your car and the amount of money it cost?” He stated the same that you are feeling now. Everyone knows that what is going on with this car is wrong but no one is willing to fix the problem. I really am getting disappointed in this product and the customer service I am receiving for Chevrolet. It starting to appear that there no one who cares.

Been a Chevy buyer for 30 years.Bought 7 new chevys over the years. All had problems except the 2 Cav's.I dont know why.But I thought I would look at the Equinox.I own a 01 Impala now. Nothing but money problems.Im not a big driver on miles.Maybe 8000 a year.
The question is.The people on this forum have any thoughts on this SUV?Good or bad.I read a lot of this forum already and just thought if someone read this they might over something.I never owned a SUV so Im not sure what to expect.
At this point Im looking at a 6 as I just cant see a 4 on a SUV. Thanks to all who respond.

Wow! That's disappointing. I'm considering buying one of these things (an LT1 most likely) sometime in the next 6-10 months, but maybe I should look more closely at the competition now. A bad DVD player is not surprising, though. My sister bought a fully-loaded brand new Odyssey and has all kinds of problems with her DVD player. She said she'd never buy a vehicle with a DVD player ever again. You know they get you for something like $1500 on that DVD player! I figure I don't even own a $1500 TV in my house ... I'm certainly not going to buy one for my car! The door motors failing is highly unusual. Really wonder if it was something simpler and they just told you they replaced the motors. Those things normally last forever. I just replaced my first motor in my '97 Taurus at the end of last year (~180k miles). And to have it happen on BOTH the REAR door motors is even MORE unusual. My failure occurred in the driver's door - the window that gets used (and banged around) the most, typically.

But other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how is the rest of the vehicle???

    Greetings,
I have a 2010 Equinox 4 cyl, 2 WD and I'm completely satisfied with the vehicle. Last weekend I pulled a trailer that weighed right at 1500 pounds 280 miles, and the vehicle did great. Gas mileage was 24.6 MPG with the trailer. I'm approaching the one year anniversary with this car and have not had the first problem. I would recommend one based on my experience.

First off they are not SUV's. They are crossovers. There is a real big difference. A SUV is built on a frame and can ride more like a truck, whereas a crossover is built on a car platform which don't have a true frame and rides like a car. My wife was interested in either a Equinox or a Fusion Hybrid. We drove both AWD Equinox's with both the 4 and the 6. Around town the 4 was peppy but I just couldn't see it as a highway car because I have a HHR with the same engine. Only difference is mine is a 4 sp. auto and the E is 6 sp. auto. My biggest complaint was the constance down shifting in both the 4 and 6 do to the 6 sp which has to many overdrive gears. The least little touch of the gas and you wait for it to downshift. Maybe now that they have been out for a while they have corrected that problem. A number of mags also complained about it for that reason. I don't see anyone here complaining about it though so maybe it is fixed. At that time neither wife nor I liked it and went with the Hybrid. If I didn't have the HHR we would most likely bought the AWD V6 Equinox over the Fusion. But even now there are times when I could have used the extra room of the Equinox over the HHR.

I have a 2010 Equinox with the interface package. I wanted to listen to music on a flash drive. When I put it in the usb, it states that it recognizes no data. My son has a 2008 Cavalier with the same package. The flash drive will play in HIS car. I tried another type of flash drive with no good results. Is there something else I need to do?

This has been an issue since I bought my new Equinox 3 months ago. The car typically shifts very hard between 3rd and 4th gears. So hard at times that it feels like something hit my car or even fell out of it. It has been in the shop 2 different times to no avail. The dealership can;t diagnose it cause the check engine light does not come on and they claim they can't get the car to repeat it. My car started running very rough a week or so back (just as I was leaving for vacation). The engine light came on and the problem was a cam sensor. It was replaced and the running rough problem is solved....but still having the shifting issues. I love my Equinox except for this one major issue. It is frustrating that the dealership is unable to figure out what the problem is, almost as if they don't believe me.

Tell them to check to make sure you have all the latest calibrations (computer software, basically) for the ECM and TCM systems. It should take them ten minutes to do this, then if any need to be updated another fifteen minutes. No guarantees, but this might solve your issue.

Just clicked 10k. We were loaded up going on vacation, 100 degree heat, going through the Berkshire mountain section of the Mass Pike in a 4 cylinder AWD LTZ.
Aside from a few downshits at 72 mph going up hills, this unit really is a nice ride. Darn close to perfect. My wife likes it much better than her 2005 Caddy SRX she traded in.

We averaged 26 miles per gallon, 650 miles round trip with some stop and go mixed in.

As for the bad news; vacation is over.

If you check on ebay, there are several listings for a wiring setup for the NOX. I purchased mine along with the hitch. Took maybe 10 minutes to install.

I have a 2010 2-LT Equinox that I want to add some wiring to. I will be towing the car behind a motor home and need to run some wiring into the car for the Brake-Buddy. The wires will consist of a break-away cable connection and a 12V power connection for the Brake Buddy. Both of these wires will fit through one 1/2" hole.

I have not been able to find a suitable place in the firewall for using an existing opening or making a new opening.

    Thanks-in-advance,

OK, probably a stupid question, but I've always had a pick up and have never carried anything on the roof before. I've got a 2010 Nox LT with roof rails, but no cross bars.

Does anything exist that fits into the roof rails, like the cross bars do, but is designed to carry surfboards? I've seen a lot of surfboard carriers that fit on the cross bars, but this is not what I want.

Also, anyone with experience care to make a recommendation?

    Thanks,

is the 2.4 engine used in the 2010 nox a brand new engine, or does it have roots to the 2.2 eco tech? i work for the postal service and our delivery vehicles have the 2.2 ecotech engine in the and they don/t seem to stand up very well. i do realize that they are working in some very tough conditions, such as driven very short distances and then turned off. in the winter time they never run long enough to to get the engine warm enough to get heat from the heater. i like the idea of good fuel mileage. but am curious about durability.
on a side note, have any of you traded a 1 generation NOX/torrent for a 2010 NOX/terrain? if you have how do they compare in ride, cabin noise and seat comfort? we have an 06 torrent and am thinking of replacing it with a 2010 NOX. would like to hear your personal experiences.
    thanks for your time

I believe the Nox engine is a totally new engine for GM. I do know it is different than the 2.4 in the Malibu (that is not direct injection). With this engine the only thing is that because it is DI it is probably well advised to get "fuel injection cleanings" every 25k miles at least due to the lack of fuel washing over the intakes. I'm talking the ones you get done at a repair shop, not just the bottle you put in your gas tank (dealers usually charge $120 or so, places like Sears and Tires Plus about $80, and Oreilly Auto Parts has a "do it yourself" kit made by 3M for $50). I can't comment on how the new Nox compares to the previous generation.

I didn't have a 1st generation Nox but did have a '03 Vue and an '06 Vue and traded the '06 Vue in December '09. I now have over 10,000 miles on the Nox 2.4 and can definitely say it is like night and day. The wind and road noise is much lower. The fuel mileage 5-6 miles better than the '03 Vue (2.2) and '06 Vue (3.5). Build quality much better. Seat comfort much better. Power is not as good as the 3.5 Honda engine in the '06 Vue but on the crowded roads it does not make much difference. The 2.4 is completely adequate.
The Nox has been trouble free so far. Not one trip back to the dealer. I just did the second oil change this morning.Very easy, love the cartridge filter. No mess and I'm not throwing as much waste in the landfill. Only thing that bothers me a bit is the chrome latch on the dash bin. It reflects light in my eye on occasion. I was going to take it off and paint it flat black but the wife vetoed that idea. She likes it chrome.
Go for the 2010 Nox, You will be happy with the huge improvement.

Its my understanding up through last year the 2.4 engine of old was made in a foreign country, want to say China but for the Nox the 2.4 is different and produced in North America.

I was told the 2.4L 4 cylinder engine is made in Springhill, Tennessee for the Equinox.

Any way you look at it, the Equinox engines (both the 4 and the 6) are underpowered.

If GM is under the government gun to produce inadequately powered vehicles, then it is a matter of time before they become uncompetitive.

The company will not go out of business because they are underwritten now by the taxpayer but they will not produce vehicles the market desires. They will simply become yet another unprofitable government enterprise, sapping the economic life blood out of the American citizenry.

GM must become competitive in the free market and get out from under the shackles of an ideological regime if it is to truly prosper.

What does where the engine is built have to do with your political opinion?

The market definitely wanted a better mpg SUV of the NOX's size. There may be cheap gas now but when it goes back to over $4/gal and higher this engine will be in demand not some overpowered gas guzzling V6-V8.

    Ahhh...Priggly.

GM can't produce enough Equinoxes. They are in very high demand. Looks like the market has spoken. But don't let facts get in the way of your rants.

Like roho said, there is high demand for a medium sized SUV that gets good mileage even if it's towing capabilities are inferior to something like an Explorer. Even the 4 cyl Equinox is fine in power for 80%+ of those who would be the target market for a vehicle like the Nox.

For the record: I'm not happy with the the US and Canadian govts., and unions, owning so much of GM. But it shouldn't cloud one's judgment about the actual vehicles.

Has anyone experienced a problem with the rear windows? I have a 2010 1LT, 4-cylinder, front wheel drive. This past winter the rear passenger went down but would not go up. This happened twice and fortunately once at the dealers service dept. I told them I saw the window rock in the track, they “realigned the window and lubricated it. Have not had the problem with that window again. Yesterday the same thing happened to the rear driver window. Dealer said no service bulletin on it. Anyone else with this problem?

Have experienced sticky power steering. Ohio turnpike on cold winter evenings returning from son’s home. Have not noticed this in warm weather.

I had to have both of my back windows motor replaced on my 2010 LTZ within a few months of each other. They would go down but had one heck of a time trying to get them back up. Took it to the dealer and they were wonderful and each time replaced the motor on both sides. So far no problem with them. knock on wood. :shades:

I haven't had any problems with the rear windows, but I really don't use them very often at all.

But I do have the issue with the "sticky" power steering. This seems to be a fairly common complaint with the electric power steering on the Equinox. (And, I've seen similar comments about some other vehicles with electric power steering.) Overall, it seems like more of an annoyance than any kind of major safety issue or anything.

this entire comment is about chasing 1/5 of one percent of a problem and acting like you are doing something meaningful.

22.77 million Americans work for the vastly inefficient government

.075 million Americans work for GM

GM is at least 10 times more efficient than the government.

You cannot measure the cost of GM's required but missing efficiency on a scale that measures real problems in this country's wasteful economics.

I have read a lot of the messages in this forum and most of them are critical of the Equinox. I understand all makes and models have problems arise with their vehicles and some of these complaints are valid. Let me say this - my wife drives a 2010 Equinox LTZ and I drive a 2011 LT 2. We are both homecare nurses in a rural area and drive 35,000 to 40,000 K a year, she is 5'3" and I am 6'3", the front power seat and the tilt/telescope wheel will allow any size person to be comfortable. Neither car has ever hesitated, stalled, shifted hard and my antenna has never hit anything. I purchase 2 new vehicles for our jobs every 3 years and these 2 are the best we have ever had regardless of price. We both average about 28 MPG with a combination of city and highway driving. I highly recommend these vehicles to anyone.

I had this happen on my 2010 Equinox to both back windows. The dealer stated it was the motor and replaced the motors on both back windows . I have not had a problem since then. :shades:

    Exactly...well said!!

It is, overall, a very nice vehicle and a good value. But it has problems, mostly software related. Those should be easy to get fixed - it is just a matter of GM first realizing the problem(s), and then fixing them. Them realizing the problems is probably the biggest hurdle.

There is still also the issue of deposits forming on the valves in the engine because of the direct injection. This is not yet a known problem with the Equinox or Traverse, but they haven't been out long. Several other manufacturers have had problems with this. Hopefully GM's engine designs are better.

My 2010 Equinox had crossbars installed by the dealer. They are made by Perrycraft, Inc.; Adventura model. Maximun load is listed at 110lbs for both crossbars.

For the first time in the 30,000+ miles I've owned my 4 cyl AWD Equuinox, I finally got the advertised highway mileage of 29 mpg on a 400 mile trip from DesMoines to Milwaukee. What was the trick?? - there was a 30 MPH tailwind behind me all the way :P

Actually, over 30,000 miles I'm averaging just under 24 MPG in a mix of about 75% highway/25% city driving.

and BTW - don't pay any attention to the fuel economy readout on the dash. Mine consistently reads 1.5 to 2 MPG higher than the actual mileage (calculated the old fashioned way - miles driven divided by gallons used).

(Still beats the heck out of the 18.5 mpg I was getting in the same mix of driving in the Mitsubishi Endeavor I had before this.)

I can't figure out how to stop the interior dash lights from dimming when I drive from sunlight to shade, like when I drive under an overpass. This is so counter intuitive to the way I drive. Example: I'm driving down the street on a bright sunny day, wearing my sunglasses, when I pass under a series of overpasses. The instrument panel dims and I can't see anything, cause I'm wearing my shades. I would rather the instrument panel get brighter, so I could see it in the virtual darkness that I've suddenly come under. I've read the manual (completely, I think) and turned the brightness knob on and off and turned the automatic head lights off, but nothing seems to change the dimming.
    What am I missing?
