I have dual citizenship and I have imported vehicles from Canada into the U.S. (and vice versa). You are correct in stating that you need a letter from the manufacturer stating the vehicle meets U.S. safety and emissions standards. Regarding the safety standards and lack of confirmation from Kia, I would examine the labeling on the vehicle (e.g. under the hood, on the driver's door, etc.) or on the original dealer sticker if it is available, and check if there is any indication of compliance with U.S. safety standards. Further, I would discuss the issue with the U.S. Customs office at the particular border entry point prior to importing the vehicle into the U.S. They can provide you with advice as to whether you have sufficient documentation for importing the vehicle into the U.S. Good luck.
  • My wife and I took delivery of our new Kia Soul+ Manual Sept. 14. After the car was bought and paid for we discovered that there was no cruise control even though the window sticker showed it as having it. We have a good dealer and salesman and since this was one of the first 2012 Soul recieved they were as surprised as we were. We contacted Kia customer service that same day sending them a fax of the sticker and a photo of the steering wheel as they requested. We were told the southern consumer affairs office would contact us about it. They never called as promised but I was able to reach with assistance from the California office an Ola Sprague, the assigned case mgr. She told me she couldnt do anything until the office Mgr returned on Friday and she would call me Friday morning. She didn't do that so I had to reach her myself in which case she arrogantly told me they were not going to install an after market cruise or any other cruise control on my Car. I asked that Kia assist in me obtaining an automatic that had cruise. I asked that her manager call back. Friday afternoon the manager Paul Stapelton called to rudely tell me that all they would do was give me the cost of the cruise control parts to the Kia factory, about $150. This was an insult by a truly certified SOB. All I can say to anyone with a problem with a problem with a Kia and has to appeal to th Kia southern affairs office, GOOD LUCK, YOU WILL NEED IT!

sorry for your problem, but how did you not know it had cruise before you purchased it? Did you not test drive the vehicle? Did you purchase it and pay for it in full before even looking at the vehicle? Seems a strange way to purchase such a large ticket item.

When I purchased my Kia I spent a good 30-45 minutes checked out the whole vehicle (just like a PDI) before I even paid a cent for it and then if something isn't right its either correct then by the service department or I get something else.

On the Canadian Soul's cruise is not available on manual transmission models.
  • The cruise control on the 2012 soul models is in a different place on the steering wheel, the bottom, than on the 2011. I did test drive the car but have never tested the cruise control on a test drive before. Because it is so new the dealer thought it had cruise because the sticker said it did. Only after this incident did many dealers find out that the + manual did not include this stated feature. The main point here is that the southern consumer affairs office and its manager can not be depended on to give support to Kia owners.
  • My Kia dealership sales Mgr has been turned down in his request to Kia for assistance in my case. I had offered to Kia and the dealership to pay the difference in cost between the manual + soul and the auto soul + with Kia giving assistance in the tradeout. I have a permanent injury to my right leg in which cruise control helps me not to have cramps on a trip over 20 highway miles. We gave our 08 XB manual, which has cruise to our son. He uses and likes the cruise,so we won't be getting that car back. The previous Soul+ manual had cruise and their main competition the XB manual has it so early on here everyone was taken by surprise they dropped it but still had it listed on the 2012 Soul + window stickers. Kia should step up and help me on this matter and take responsibility for their mistake which is causing us a lot of dissapointment. The right thing to do is help us get into the Soul + auto which has cruise and it may be the legally correct thing to do. We will see!
  • South Eastern dealers I have asked have told me that Kia or the Kia Southern Regonal Office or the manager, Paul Stapelton did not inform them that the 2012 Soul+ did not have cruise control, as stated on the window sticker, as Paul Stapelton told me was done Sept. 6. There are still 2012 Kia Soul + manual cars listed on Autotrader of Dealer inventories that show these cars to have cruise control even though they do not and salesmen that do not know this. This may lead some to question the credability of the Kia Southern Regional Office. My dealer, salesman , sales managers have told me they were not told and I believe them. This has caused my wife and I a lot of disappointment and limited use of the car because of my right leg limitations. I have been denied assistance to remedy my problem by this office. I need cruise control and not having it limits the usefulness of this car to me.

Keep up the pressure on Kia. They clearly baited you. From their Media Center site, a press release dated August 17, 2011:

"Soul+ with manual transmission offers additional standard features, including a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, steering wheel-mounted controls, cruise control, hands-free Bluetooth® wireless connectivity, dual front 12-volt power outlets with single power outlet in the cargo area, and tweeter speakers, all enhancing creature comforts on the road. Standard on the Soul+ is a covered upper storage bin, dual visor vanity mirrors with covers and dual map lights, while black cloth seats are adorned with Soul logo inserts. An optional Audio Upgrade Package also is available for Soul+ featuring an Infinity audio system with UVO technology that enhances the sound with a center speaker, subwoofer, external amplifier and speaker lights in a rainbow of colors that pulse to the beat of the music or add mood lighting. A rear camera display is part of the audio upgrade package for enhanced visibility."

Go to and look for it. Save it. Print it out. And use it as a hammer. The Kia site,, shows that Steering Wheel-Mounted Cruise Control is Standard on ALL Soul models. Period. Print that one out and use it as a crowbar.

File a Lemon Law complaint with your State. And forget about the chastising comments earlier from guy who had the nerve to expect you to check that the window sticker was right !

Try contacting the Owner of the Dealership. The Sales Manager and Service Manager both have to adhere to policies, but the Owner could easily make this right with an Auto car, and write off the loss. Bad PR like this will cost just him - the other guys just make salaries.

I'd be mad as hell too. I have been considering a Soul + Manual w/ Cruise, but now...
  • Thank you for your response and the information.

The Kia site,, shows that Steering Wheel-Mounted Cruise Control is Standard on ALL Soul models. Period.

sorry but that is not accurate, if you click on the link from the spec list with regards the cruise control, there is a disclaimer which states:
"not available on Base and Plus M/T."
  • The disclaimer mentioning the + manual has only recently been added and was not there Sept 14, the day I purchased the car. Infact the next day I spoke to a woman by the name of Daniel in the Southern Consumer affairs Office and she was not aware that the + manual should not have cruise control or she would have told me. Im sorry but why are you so negatively interested in my serious problem?
  • Now our dealer, Boniface Kia, Melbourne Fl. has turned against us by changing their story to say My wife and I were told before we signed the contract to purchase the car that this 2012 soul + manual did not have cruise control even though the window sticker showed that it did. This is not correct. Until we purchased the car by signing the contract, all the papers and issuing a bank cashiers check to them and preparing to leave the dealership did we find out that the car was missing the cruise control. In the Kia publication KIAMEDIA, on page 3 it clearly states that the 2012 Kia soul MANUAL has cruise control. This publication is dated August 17, 2011. So, showing on the window sticker that this car was suppose to have cruise control was not a misprint as Paul Stapelton, manager of the Kia Southeastern consumer affairs office states. What ever happened to the truth and integrity in business. The August 17, 2011 Kia publication states that the 2012 Kia Soul + manual has cruise control!

don't get me wrong, I hope you get things sorted out and wish you all the luck, but its just that I'm having a problem following your explanation.
As you confirmed you did test drive it but you said the cruise was in a different position on the 2012 to a 2011, but according to the owners manual of the two years its in exactly the same place (it wouldn't be practical otherwise), but you don't have to use it to know its there, as you said you didn't actually operate the cruise.
Also you stated you had a permanent injury on your right leg which cruise would be a big help, so again why would you not make sure it is there as its so important to you and also wouldn't an auto not be better for you in the first place than a manual?

As you stated it was on the window sticker, which appears in error but you have offered to pay the difference to go for the auto, so that should be acceptable by the dealer, as you said you only drove it out when you noticed it, so the vehicle is still brand new, so I can't see how the dealer could not just take the car back and make the adjustment for a + auto.
  • Our salesman was in the car just prior to leaving the dealership showing my wife how to use the bluetooth then went to show her the cruise when he exclaimed, "where is the cruise?" There is no cruise! I don't believe he knew it was missing until this time. He said he didn't. Yes it should be acceptable to the dealer for me to pay the difference between the + auto and the+ manual and Kia should assist but neither will. Its no comfort to me for you to challenge every report I make and its also rather unreasonable. Ive been exposed to too many unreasonably people already at my dealership and Kia!
  • One more thing. If you like to sniff out every little thing. Ill give you a Sherlock Holmes job. I read Kia's website many times in the 30 days prior to my purchase and there was no disclaimer on the + manual at that time and the 17 Aug 2011 publication of KIAMEDIA page 3 clearly states that the 2012 Kia Soul + manual has cruise control. So what happened? Did they run out of parts for the cruise from the supplier? Did they discover a technical problem on the manual + with cruise? Why did the 2011 + manual have cruise but the 2012 + manual does not. And one other correction. The position of the 2012 + auto cruise is on the bottom of the steering wheel and on the side of the 2011 steering wheel. Now if you can find the answers to these questions you are doing better than me. And I could not get any straight answeres from Paul Stapelton, mgr of the Kia SE consumer affairs office. And I don't accept his explanation that it was a missprint. Ive been lied to so often now, their noses should be over a foot long!
  • I am happy to report that Paul Stapelton Mgr. of the SE Kia Consumer Affairs Ofc. and I have reached a settlement agreement which is a compromise to me. I now believe that he made an honest effort to work out a solution to my problem with the management of my dealership which was declined by them. I am disappointed in their misrepresentation of the truth. I still believe in the integrity of my salesman.
  • Now I have answers to the questions you ask. The SE Consumer Affairs Mgr has clarified some facts. This dealer has the ability to issue a permanent plate with registration immediately and this was done before I found out shortly before leaving that there was no cruise control. I believe that the salesman also did not know this. At this point, since the plate and registration information had already been transmitted to the state, if the car was changed out it would under the law have to be sold as a used car in which it would be reduced in value. Kia was not willing to pay that difference and the dealer was not willing to take that loss. However it is obvious that the dealer management knew, from their statements, that this car did not have cruise control as shown on the window sticker before I purchased the car.
  • Post # 36 disclaimer: We are not accepting low ball offer from Kia which in now way will assist us in getting cruise control for our car. My wife is furious! A prominent national CLASS ACTION law firm that has an excellent track record for large recoveries has been in communication with us that believes we have an excellent case against Kia with a high probility of recovery for the way we have been mistreated and breach of contract. We are considering this very seriously.

  • OK, Fair enough. We traded in a 2011 Kia soul base for the 2012 Soul + Manual to upgrade to more options such as blue tooth, cruise control, etc. We use this car for grandchildren transport and 50 t0 100 mi economy trips. My wife, in her fury over our mistreatment by Kia, has entered this battle for our rights. She is smarter than me. She is a Georgia redhead with a Masters degree and made an A in statistics working towards her doctorate. She used to drive a Porsche when Porsche built cars for drivers rather than oversized rich people. The Kia Southern region office is in Atlanta so the mgr of that office should have some idea of the tenacity of Georgia redheads or if not soon will. Todays women are smart, well educated, know how to fight dirty, and will fight for their rights. If the mgr of the Kia Atlanta office decides he is going to try pushing around Georgis redheaded women he had better start by purchasing a good baseball cup!

Kia Media has now posted the full "Features and options" plus specs and MSRP available for download in pdf. This is detailed info that maybe more clear than the main website with regards what is optional and packages.
  • FYI anyone, I have had my Soul ! for going on 2 years now. It has over 28,000 miles. It has been going on strong with no problems during this time. It goes back to the dealer for its periodic maintenance and lately to a local oil change place (dealer reccomended I do that since I live over 50 miles from the dealer) when due. We have a Honda Pilot but this is the car we take for any trips we go on since it is better on gas. Just my wife and I along with our dog go tripping about 6 times a year. I cannot hear so I cant appreciate the sound system, however before I went deaf I could hear it for about 6 months - it wa :) s really great. So my bottom line is, Great car, reliable to the Nth degree, comfortable for trips, travels well on interstates. Hope this helps out anyone out there wondering about the Soul.

  • I've got to agree with you. Regular maintenance does wonders and I'm just under 31k running great. I've had mine since July 22nd, 2010 and it's a workhorse. No complaints.

the 4u with UVO system and sun roof. This in the new Misty Green.

  • Wow! I've never seen a car with a manual transmission and cruise control. I didn't know they existed. Is there a reason you chose a manual instead of a automatic? I would think the automatic would be much easier to operate with a bad leg. Just curious...

None of the dealers in Phoenix have this model; only the Base & Plus. Has the Soul Exclaim been discontinued?
