I was blown away by the features of the vehicle - may have been a bit star-struck. Of course I traded a 98 Ford Escort... with 228,000 miles that they gave me $1200 - that would be $1000 over blue book.... I think my rebate was $1000. I mentioned to the salesman that I really wanted a manual transmition, got a call the next Friday that a manual they weren't expecting showed up, signed up on contingency of a test drive after P&P. I did miss one thing - cruise control. It's included with the automatic transmition. Since the salesman said it had one, the dealer split the cost of an after market cruise. I paid $15,500. There was some discussion earlier about "feeling a lincoln penny". It is supposed to be a sporty car & you should feel the road. I think the ride is fine. I've driven a lot worse.

Picked up a 2010 ET SE with a 5spd. Could find several auto's, but I guess I am just a bit old school when it comes to something sporty. Got the black pearl with the two tone saddle interior, spoiler, and mats. I will have to look up the final out the door, but I got it 2/27, and the $1500 rebate ended the next day. Basically it was invoice +250, less the rebate and a solid trade value on the exchange. It was one of two sticks in the state at the time. One black, one white.

Love the car. It does ride a little firm, but in yesterdays 25mph crosswinds it was rock solid. And I love the sound of that little 2.0L with a 5spd. The car is not what I would ever call fast, but it is certainly quick, and handles like it's on rails.

    lots o' fun! :shades:

I'm thinking of getting a H Elantra Touring. I believe H is offering $1,000 cash back if you also get their financing (3.9% for 60 months).
    Questions:

    1. having never considered buying a H vehicle before. Does H normally have cash back programs?
    2. has anyone financed a vehicle through H before?
    3. if so, can the loan be paid off early without penalties?

    1. Yes, they seem to have them pretty regularly.
    2. Not me.
    3. Yes, they can.

But I think you are probably confused because I'm fairly sure that the cash back you get for financing ($1000 in my area) is the same amount you get for paying cash. You do not get both. So there's really no advantage to financing and then paying it off, unless you are seeing some offer in your area that is not in mine.

Here is what I see for my area:

    •$1,000 customer cash back (4/1/2010 - 4/30/2010)
    •Lease starting at $239/month for 24 months (4/1/2010 - 4/30/2010)
    •Special APR Financing. As low as 3.9% APR for 60 mos, 4.9% for 72 mos PLUS $1,000 Bonus Cash (4/1/2010 - 4/30/2010)

I bought mine yesterday for 15,700 after the 1000 rebate. This ended up at 16,970 with tag, title, tax, and fees. For anybody looking for a great internet price look at Murdock Hyundai near Salt lake City. I used their internet price as a haggling point and I was in and out under 1 hour at my local delearship.

It was a bit of a fiasco getting one of these things in automatic transmission. I had initially requested a GLS with Auto and the Popular Equipment Package - but that package apparently isn't offered any more. (I didn't find this out until I drove 50 miles to the dealer, where they tried to convince me to just pay the same price for the base model WITHOUT the Pop. Equipment Package. NO thanks!)
Ultimately I had them ship a SE with Auto from out of town. I paid $17,145 plus TTL. Despite feeling jerked around by the dealer, I'm VERY happy with the car.
  • maxx4memaxx4me Member Posts: 1,340
yeah, my HET was one of eight in the country. I had a dealer trade with another over 5 hours away to get the car I wanted, a white HET GLS with Preferred Package, Bluetooth, floor mats and cargo cover. Paid about $18,200 out the door. I have the exact car I wanted, and am thrilled. I was offered a HET SE for the exact same price; can you imagine?? I absolutely did not want alloy wheels and sunroof, so the temptation was never there.
  • mickeyrommickeyrom Member Posts: 936
Out of curiosity, what you got against aluminum wheels?

people who drive them into the curb, causing $300 in damage each time the alloy rim is bent. Cost to the same hit on a plastic wheel cover: negligible.

I am looking at purchasing the Touring GLS with the popular pkg. I have gotten one quote of 16,559 for the car (which seems pretty good). My question is about reliability, has the reliability and overall quality really improved? Are there any problems particular to this car? From the Internet searches I have done so far it seems some people are unhappy with the ride quality, but the overall quality and assurance of the warranty seems to keep people happy.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Improved from what? Last year's model or your misguided perception likely based on 10+ year old information from when Hyundai's were crappy?
  • crowheartcrowheart Member Posts: 36
I am not sure your answer is quite warranted mrbill.
If you don't have anything constructive to add to my post, why do you reply with a rude sarcastic answer? Why bother, thanks anyway and have a good day....
  • misterbillmisterbill Member Posts: 60
Give me a break. You didn't ask "how is the quality", you asked "has the reliability and overall quality really improved". It certainly sounded to me like you needed to be convinced that Hyundai's are not unreliable, crappy cars, which I know was already outdated information when I bought my Elantra GT in 2001.

If you don't like my reply, then explain why I was wrong in interpreting your question. And explain what you're looking for them to have improved from.

Unfortunately this thread has morphed into something distant from my original post. I hope someone else can shed some light on the Hyundai Elantra Touring for me. Thanks....

The reliability of Hyundai's have improved greatly from their early years and overall quality as well and while trade in value may still be lower than other makes overall their product stands up well against their competitors. My experience with that model is based on the automatic, found it to be sluggish and didn't care to see that the 2010 has 15" tires instead of the 16" tires which may account for the harsher ride some have complained about. Overall the vehicle does have a lot to offer so I wouldn't worry about the build quality, best advice would be to take it on a test drive and then see for yourself if it will meet your needs.

2010 ET GLS with PP #2 and Bluetooth: actually, the harsher ride comes with the larger tire, not smaller. The 15 inch ride with steel wheels is better than the 17 inch with alloy. Moreover, please ensure that the dealer takes the tire pressure down to 32 when you test drive it. They ship the car at 60 psi to keep flat spots from developing on the tires during transit.
I hope Consumer Reports is correct on the reliability score. The car is the i-30 afterall, and has won awards all over the world. Also, make sure you are talking about Preferred Package #2, not #1. Another gaff from dealers who can't tell that when you are asking for a Preferred Package, it is the one THAT COMES WITH SOMETHING EXTRA!! Don't make that same mistake. If you want radio buttons on the wheel, fog lights, roof rails, upgraded cloth, lighted vanity mirrors, etc.....make sure you are getting PP #2.
I think the car is an excellent car; again, I only hope CR is correct in their ratings. They love it, and so far, so do I.
  • crowheartcrowheart Member Posts: 36
Thanks for the help! So you are saying the ride is harsh? I will take it for a test drive soon. I do occasionally drive dirt/gravel roads, that is why I am concerned about the ride. I think if the quality stays consistent Hyundai's resale value will eventually improve. I can live with sluggish as long as I can merge onto the Highway safely and keep up with traffic as I need to. I really like the 10/100,000 mile warranty. In reality all cars should not have major mechanical failures prior to that time period if they are made reasonably well. I had 0 problems with my Subaru's prior to 12 years and well over 100,000 miles...
  • crowheartcrowheart Member Posts: 36
Your reply has been very helpful. Thank you....
  • crowheartcrowheart Member Posts: 36
One more thing, what does Preferred Package # 1 come with? LOL
  • maxx4memaxx4me Member Posts: 1,340
he, he, he......NOTHING. It simply indicates that you DON'T want any extras added on. In fact, it doesn't even appear in the HET brochure. Imagine my suprise when my dealer tells me that he has "found my car", only to drive up with it and it not have fog lights, roof rails, radio buttons on steering wheel...................
And all he could say was, " you asked for the Preferred Package!!"
Now why would anyone ask for something that is standard with the car. What an idiot. I guess one could make the argument that saying preferred package indicated that I wanted a stripped down ET!!
Yes, I always go out of my way to say what I want on my car by ordering something that costs $0 in your cost sheet. Get a clue dealers!!!!!!!!!!!
  • crowheartcrowheart Member Posts: 36
Possibly he thought he could rip you off and charge you more for the stripped down GLS. I had a dealer today quoting higher prices for the HET GLS with the PP that was hail damaged (we had a major hail storm last month). The salesman acted like they were giving me a discount for the dimpled roof. The damn car was more expensive then the quote I just got on an undamaged one with the same options from a different dealer. Buyer Beware....
  • maxx4memaxx4me Member Posts: 1,340
that's one thing that makes it tough to buy a Hyundai. Hyundai does not allow buyers to order the car the way they want. You have to go out and find your car. In my case, I only wanted an GLS, White with Black interior, with PP#2 and Bluetooth. I flat out would not accept anything else. We found one 5 hours away and my buying service found a dealer willing to trade with that dealer AND drive the 10 hours to deliver my car to me. I now have exaclty what I wanted.

I just received an OTD quote for the above car. The quote was 17,262.77. I find this almost impossible to believe. I have received 3 other OTD quotes for the same car and they are as follows,
    18,409.65 OTD
    17,825.37 OTD
17,555.00 OTD for a hail damaged car(hail storm here last month-other cars are clean).
Does the 17,262.77 quote seem to good to be true? I am afraid that when we sit down to negotiate they will be pulling all kinds of tricks out of their hat.
I live in the Chicago Metro area, any insight on this matter would be helpful.

    Thanks again....

I payed $18,200 out the door for my ET GLS Auto with PP#2, Bluetooth, a cargo liner (tray) and floor mats. I don't think it was a great price, but it was what my buying service pre-negotiated. I later was offered a ET SE for the exact same price out the door. The dealer was desperate to move some cars. I agree; I don't know how some dealers are giving away their end of year holdback and then some. Your prices may not include freight, tax, tags, title, and paper processing fee. Make sure it does before venturing into the dealership.

We bought the 2010 Hyundai Elantra Touring GLS with the popular package today.
I thought we got a great price of 17,449.78 OTD. I am very happy about the deal and the car. I love the room and the safety features.

To answer several questions above, I have owned an '02 GLS, '05 GT, and now a'10 HET SE with the 5spd. The first two were great cars, virtually trouble free. The ride of the '05 GT (with the oversize Tiburon GT rear stabilizer added. :) ) was an awsome little car. I would never call an Elantra "fast" but they can certainly be nimble and entertaining.

The SE with the larger wheels and low profile tires does ride a bit stiff. But the handling is amazing for "a little station wagon". One complaint I do have is the Kumho radials. Handle? You betcha. Road noise? oh yeah. those suckers are noisy.

Having owned both, the auto is adequate for acceleration, but not great. The 5spd ratios are great, and also gives a numerically higher final drive ratio. Much zippier. The shifter is first rate. Only issue here is that going into 1st above 10mph is stiff. That is also something you are not likely to do very often as the 2.0L pulls strong in 2nd from 10-15mph. Here again, not "fast", but pretty darn quick.

The "Black Pearl" is in the shop tonight and will be checked over in the morning by my local dealers "Platinum" technician. I have known the guy for years and he does know Hyundai. The issue is no throttle between idle and 2200rpm. When I dropped it off this evening the service manager wanted me to ride with a tech and "see if we can duplicate the problem". I told him no ride was needed, just trot out one of the techies and I will show him. The guy was skeptical until I started the car, motioned for him to have a seat in the drivers seat, and bring the engine up to 1500rpm. Try as he might, couldn't do it. Either 700rpm, or 2200rpm. Nothing in between. The guy tried a few things to check it out, then admitted he had never seen one do that. No check engine light, runs great, just no throttle coming off idle. First guess is a defective TPS, but they won't know until in the morning when they can put it on the computer and monitor what the computer is doing.

In the meantime, they brought around a brand new Elantra Sedan, handed me the keys, and said they would give me a call tomorrow. I'll let you know what they find.

BTW, the throttle on the loaner works perfect.
  • jlflemmonsjlflemmons Member Posts: 2,242
Well, the factory rep joined with the guys at the dealer, and after spending some time with Pearl, a couple of other 5spds, and several automatics, the factory guy is turning it over to the engineering guys. None of the auto's have the dead spot in the throttle, but all of the manuals do. The computer sees the TPS changing, and everything seems to be working, but the computer is ignoring the first 15% or so of the throttle movement. It appears to be a bug in the software, and the service manager is going to work with the factory rep and see if a fix can be worked into the code. So, sum of all is that it isn't broken, but it isn't right, either.

Just purchased a 2010 Hyundai Elantra Touring SE w/automatic, mats, tray liner and iPod cable
    OTD: $18.1k
    Sales price was around $17.1k
    This is in central Va.
I used a buying service zag dot com so the price was pre-negotiated. I just walked in and signed the papers (already had financing in place).
This is probably the easiest buying experienced I have had.

Yes it has the sunroof, roof rails, 17in wheels, heated seats, etc. There were no packages available.

I've been very pleased with the car so far. The cargo capacity is surprising for the size of the car.
  • maxchemaxche Member Posts: 4
    OTD: $16900

This was the lowest price I got near the town. It seemed that this model was very popular recently since most dealers told me that they had no GLS model in store and would locate one for me. I don't think it's a great price. It's my first time to buy a new car. Deal or no deal? Ask for help.
  • crowheartcrowheart Member Posts: 36
Sounds like a good OTD price to me. Did you pay under 15,300 for the car before taxes, title, etc, etc with the 1000 incentive added? I have the same car as you I paid 17,449.78 OTD. I have the GLS auto with the Popular package though.
  • markmark69markmark69 Member Posts: 6
    maxche,
What is your zipcode? I can look up what dealers are offering. My subscription is good for 3 months. it wont give OTD price..but it will give sales plus (including incentives freight, etc...but not including tax & tag)
  • crowheartcrowheart Member Posts: 36
60076, 60053,60016 Check these zip codes. The dealer I bought my car from has plenty of inventory. Let me know if you want the dealers name. Good luck...
  • maxchemaxche Member Posts: 4
Thanks, crowheart. I think you got a very good price. That popular package #2 costs $700 or more. I have to pay about 15,600 before taxes, title and license, but the tax rate here is relatively low.

For both zip codes the best pre-negotiated price zag dot com came up with was $15,770. The popular Pkg is not listed under options, so I cant tell if that is included.

I didnt realize there was such a difference in regional pricing.
The exact same car in my area is quoted @ $13,869 :surprise:
  • markmark69markmark69 Member Posts: 6
Sales price $15,320. Unfortunately I do not see the popular Pkg under the options. So i cant say if that is included.

You guys are lucky to be living where you are. Here in the SF Bay Area, I got my gray carbon mist GLS Auto with PP#2, rear spoiler, and mats from the local Hyundai dealer for $16800 after $1000 rebate and before TTL, which itself adds $1944. I thought this was a good deal at $639 below invoice plus the $1000 rebate, and zag shows $16939 as the lowest price on-in stock GLS Autos with these options within 170 miles. The San Jose dealer has GLS manuals and SEs for $2250 below invoice through zag (they seem to be sold out of GLS autos), but MT is a non-starter with my wife :) and I don't need the features of the SE. It seems Hyundai may have built more in the MT and SE trims in response to the enthusiasm of reviewers for those configurations, but the boring GLS AT still seems to sell the fastest here. Regardless in any trim, the car is an awesome deal and am truly loving it.

So if you are on the fence about paying less than $16k before TTL for a GLS Auto PP2, I suggest you jump off it real quick.
  • gwillygwilly Member Posts: 51
I am in so. cal and trying the costco hyundai promotion, we'll see what happens. The deal is invoice minus 3% of MSRP minus $250 minus the existing $1000 rebate, after the deal is done you get a Costco cash card for $500 for filling out the survey.

However the availability of GLS with PP2 is close to nill (says sales mgr), the quote over phone for SE/ manual is $17,421 plus ttl, OTD=$19,400. Seems like a good deal, truecar says a great deal is less than $17,380.

Since the dealer has no manual transmission ET's( unless I buy one and he brings it in) he says the regular elantra with manual transmission is the same, does anyone know if this is true? I'd like to get a feel for the manual transmission and see if it fits my driving style.
  • maxx4memaxx4me Member Posts: 1,340
I had a dealer here in no.VA giving away SEs for $18,200 OTD, the same price I paid for my GLS with PP#2. It indeed is tough to find a GLS with PP#2, and I feel it is a better car than the SE simply because I don't want 17 inch tires to roughen my ride, nor a sun roof that never gets used (I had one before), nor alloy wheels to get scuffed up.
  • turtle40002000turtle40002000 Member Posts: 1
Got a quote for $16150 on GLS automatic +Pop PKg+ floor mats at a dealer 1hr away, and a quote $16389 for the same car except + mud gaurds and the dealer is 10 mins away +ttl. I'm ok with either quotes but just worried that I can get the price lower in the next coming months due to dealer incentives to make room for 2011. Is this usually the case?
  • markmark69markmark69 Member Posts: 6
I test drove the Touring SE w/manual. I have driven sports cars my entire life with man. transmissions and I have to say this was a very good man. tran.
Short throw shifter. Shift gate very crisp, gearing ratio was good (much better than the auto. gear ratio). Light clutch (at least to me)
The only reason I didnt pickup the manual is my wife wanted the auto. She doesnt ask for much so it was hard for me to say no.

    Hello,

I live in the Boston area and went to a dealership with the Costco Program a few weeks ago. For a GLS with package 1 (extra $700) and automatic the dealer wanted about $16,800 and another $400 documentation fee. I would also have to pay registration fees and state sales tax. Finally, I would get a Costco $500 gift card. Is this a good deal? Would I be better off not using Costco?
    thanks

    Check out the above link.
BTW make sure you are getting the popular pkg upgrade, the roof rails, and all the extras which is popular equipment package #2 and that costs 700.00. Popular Equipment Package #1 is the standard and doesn't cost extra.
I paid 15,952 for the ET auto with the popular equipment pkg 2(700.00). That price was with the 1000 dollar rebate applied. My OTD price was 17,449.78 I believe.
That Doc Fee is very high! Is that standard?
I guess if the Costco gift card is worth 500.00 dollars to you and the Doc fee is legit the price is still Not OK IMO. They need to come down!!!

I really believe though that you can shave off 500-900 dollars off of that price easily, ....Good Luck and keep us posted...

I traded in my '07 Mazda5 Touring for a silver ET SE w/Auto. I wanted the 5-speed but they didn't have any SE's...just GLS's. I test drove the auto before buying and for the type of driving I do, it wasn't a deal breaker. My Mazda5 had a 4-spd as well so I was used to the drawbacks of a 4-spd.
I got exactly what the TMV figures were for my trade and car! The ET's in Las Vegas are in very short supply as they go very quickly. I started out wanting it in red w/5-spd but am happy with my silver on black.
Prior posts were accurate regarding overly inflated tires. Mine were at 36psi when delivered. This, plus stiff damping, makes for a jiggly ride at times. My Mazda was more supple and cornered almost as well. Anyone interested in a more supple ride might want to try out Sumitomo LSV Touring tires. I had a new set on my Mazda prior to trading and rode really well.
I'm hoping the body kit I've seen on i-30 models finds its way to the States!!!

Thank you very much. I confused the packages (it's been a few weeks.) I meant to say package 2--so it's GLS, auto, package 2 for 16,800 and another $500 in costco $--so basically 16,300 and then $400 in "document fees"--which seemed high to me as well. Last time I paid under $300 and that included the registration fees and I thought that THAT was high. Is it possible that Hyundai dealers give better deals without Costco?

    thanks again
  • hwyhobohwyhobo Member Posts: 265
Anyone knows what the deal is with the Popular Package on GLS with manual? Why is it not available? I am about to buy the ET, but I would love to have the telescopic steering wheel (6'3", long legs). I was not impressed by the AT, so want to buy manual, but it seems the only way to buy the telescopic wheel is to spend extra $3K on the SE. That is bizarre to me. In fact, I preferred both the seats and the less harsh ride in the GLS. Why is Hyundai treating telescoping steering wheel as such an exotic option?

For those who are tall with long legs, if you bought the GLS manual, how do you find the driving position after a while? Are you comfortable?
  • maxx4memaxx4me Member Posts: 1,340
While I acknowledge it is a persons inseam, not their overall height that matters, I cannot fathom how a 6'3'' person can fit in an ET. I'm 6'1'' and have an awful time. In fact I won't drive it at all; it goes to my wife. I have a 36' inseam. Yes, the telescoping steering provides me a good arm position, but the foot on the gas is not pleasant after about 10 miles.
If you think Hyundai is being stingy, try Subaru. Telescoping steering STILL is not standard on their Forrester. You have to get the deluxe model to get T.S. For $27,000, I'll pass thank you very much.
  • hwyhobohwyhobo Member Posts: 265
If you went by my inseam, it would be even worse than 6'3" would imply. I guess I am somewhat resigned to the fact that short of a rear-wheel drive (Genesis Coupe fits me like a glove, but it is incredibly impractical for a family vehicle), I will never find a car that fits me (VW Jetta is a little better, but I am afraid to touch them because of their legendary reliability (sarcasm mode fully engaged)). What annoys me in particular in many cars is the "dead pedal", which robs me of whatever minimum rest area there is for my left leg - this is especially egregious on automatics.

What do you drive, and what would you recommend for a tall guy? Perhaps I have overlooked something.
