I have a 2000 V40 that cranks for a long time before starting. Because of dealer location it is diffacult to get this car to Volvo for repair so I took it to a local forign car mechanic. He checked the car with his computer and found it had a bad crankshaft sensor. The car has 128000 miles so the timing belt and water pump were also replaced along with the sensor. The car still had the same starting problem . After another check on his computer a code came up for a bad MAP sensor. The MAP sensor was replaced and the problem still existis. After $1,300.00 and four trips back to the shop I don't know what to do! Has anyone had this problem or know how to fix it?

I went to fill up my gas tank the other day following some wet weather and the automatic gas tank would not unlock. While searching the spare tire area of the car, looking for a tool to manualy open the gas tank, I found about two inches of water where the spare tire sits.

    Anyone else have this problem?

I've had the same problem for at least two years now. I've spent so much money to fix this problem and it's still not fixed. However, my car's symptoms are opposite of yours - my car accelerates/idles hot on its own - so much for buying a Volvo because of its safety reputation. In the spring of 2004, the dealership replaced the thermostat and sensor to fix this problem. It worked for about a year and a half and I'm back to the same issue. I am ready to get rid of my V40. And it only has 72k miles.

Is this car and the V50 availble with factory Sirius radio or an Ipod adapter?
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    No.

No Volvo's are available w/ factory Sirius or ipod.
IPod adaptors aren't available for the S40, yet.

    Hello!

Just signed up, have a question on the engine light. It came on a few weeks ago, went to volvo dealership and had a part replaced. Then a week later it came on again, went back to the dealership. They worked on it for 12 hours and couldn't figure out why the light was on? Only one part wasn't reading anything on the computer. They swamped parts out and placed in another V40 and everything was fine. Then the light turned OFF. I have a warranty so they replaced the entire computer. The light stayed off. Just called to come get it and they said the light came back on briefly. Anyone had problems like this or can offer advice? Seems to be running okay, they said all the techs looked at it a volvo specialists couldn't find the reason it came on. Should I drive it? Please help. Happy with the car otherwise :)

Got the car looked great and ran great until 12000 km since then problems. Now have 45000 km. Started stalling out after warm start, new software added to computer and updates then, headlight went computer issue, ABS went, air bag light kept coming on, wouldn't start did not recognize the key. Thought problems are over key could not be released from the ignition. Dealer has been good about service - get this suggested to me with all of the problems that I am having it would be wise to get an extended warranty.

Hi, I have a '96 Volvo v40, she has done 150 miles and has been a gem! However, I have recently found a water in the well of the tyre area of the car as well and this worsens every time it rains. I have checked the sunroof drains and they appear fine. However, now I think it might be the rear seal on the hatch door. Did you have any joy in finding out what caused your "water in the well?"

I recently had my 2000 V40 100k mi to the dealer for the "check engine" light. I was told it's a problem with the catalytic converter. They were not exactly certain what the problem was, so they asked me to pay $280. for "upgrades" and if those upgrades did not solve the problem then one or both converters will need to be replaced @ $1,000. ea. (I did not know my car has a front and rear converter) I have only had it back 2 days and now the front drivers side is shaking tremendously when I accelerate above 30 mph. Yet there is no check engine light on. Does a converter pose this problem? Again, it is only when excellerating, and I noticed weeks ago a roar in that area of the car when excellerating. Also, is it typical practice that you pay to "try" repairs and if that does not fix it pay more and more until they get it right? I asked the service man if the fix does not work, do you replace my old parts and give me money back? And he laughed!! If they weren't broken in the first place why should I have to pay for them? They just got it wrong.

Just bought a 2004 V40 and so far so good. Nicest car I've ever owned. But find it funny that when I accelerate the doors don't automatically lock like you'd find on a ford taurus for pete's sake. Is this normal or do I need to have it programmed to do this? Any ideas? :confuse: ">

    Hi.

I just bought a preowned Volvo V40 and the brakes feel funny to me, almost as if the pads are down to nothing and scraping the rotors. No gravelly grinding, but like a low rumble and possible ever-so-slight metal to metal contact.

So, I took it to a brake place and they said the brakes were in good shape and everything else looked fine--nothing weird looking.

They said it could be an ABS issue.

Before I get jacked at the dealership I thought I would post this. Any ideas?

    :confuse:

    Hi,

I know it has been a while but did you ever figure out what the issue was with your car not starting? We bought our 2001 V40 station wagon 7 months ago and have had it in the shop 5 or 6 times since for the same kind of issue. They have done extensisve diagostic testing and still cannot figure out what the problem is. Its like a guess and check game now. Every time they replace or fix something the car is fine for a month and then it won't start again. They think it has something to do with the immobilizer now but I was just wondering if I could learn from your experience.

    Thanks,

I am checking out a 2000 V70 XC SE and CARFAX shows the point of origin as NICB and then shipped from Guam to a US dealer! VIN. # is YV1LZ569Y2735841.

Any clues on its place of assembly?

Hi there, Our V40 was badly rear ended and the body work afterwards was done by a local body shop as there is no proper Volvo collision center within 400 km from us. The way the new rear bumper was installed looks a bit strange to me (there is a lot of ribbed black plastic showing">) but having no access to another V40 and no pre-accident photos I am not sure if the repair was done right or not. Would any of you V40 owners be willing to send us photos of the back with the hatch door open to compare? Many thanks in advance,

I'm new to this forum so I might be in the wrong place so bear with me. Last year I bought a used 2001 S40 Turbo and I love it. I am a mechanic but I know little about Volvos. How can I get another 25 or 30 horse out of it without breaking the bank?

my 1996 V40 Lamba Sound Dash Lite comes on after a few miles, the car has new exhaust an cat, anyone got any ideas why, and where is the sensor located

Oh My. My 2002 V40 has almost ALL the same problems yours does! It's been very expensive to maintain. A friend of my wife's was interested in buying it but I didn't want to sell it to someone I knew - don't want that on my conscience! Whats up with the seat leather? I have an Accord 2 years older with leather seats that look great - the V40's are rippped at the seams. I have the funky brakes too. I'll never go back to Volvo. Poor quality and poor design - the radio - yes!

I have a 92 240 with 79,000 orig miles. Automatic with a very clean interior and rust free exterior. Runs great. Needs shocks and a starter motor. I am interested in trades for a pv-544 or 122 amazon wagon in good condition and mechanically sound. If nothing what is the top price I could sell the car for with this low mileage?

I have a Volvo V40 Wagon and i need my front motor mount replaced. The Volvo service place I service my car wants to charge me $280 for parts and labor. Does anyone know if this is a reasonable amount or what the cost to replace Volvo motor mounts typically is?
    Thanks!

Can anyone tell me how to adjust the headlight on my V40?
It has a Halogen lens with an aftermarket HID kit installed. The left light is considerably lower than the right lens.

    Thanks for any help.

I bought a v40 about two weeks ago from a dealer/volvo mechanic. I am a little worried the car is becoming a lemon. When I am driving on the freeway and have to accelerate up a hill there is a strange vibration that shakes the floor, gas peddle, and steering wheel. This also happens when the rpms go above 2500. The guy I bought the car from also drives a v40 and he says that his experiences the same thing. He thinks it may be the axel barring needing to be replaces (which is a cheap replacement), but I am worried it might be something wrong with the turbo or the transmission. Any advice?

Hello to all: Most of my Eurocar experience has been with German vehicles (one Audi A4, three Jettas and a Passat) and a few Japanese (one Honda, several Mazdas). I am pondering a 2000-2002 S40 or V40 for my daughter based primarily on safety considerations and I find the styling to be attractive. Now that they have been on the market for quite some time, does anyone have any comments regarding major, inevitable repair issues that one should be aware of? A4s seem to be plagued with timing belt issues (change it well BEFORE the spec or you might blow the engine) and bad front suspensions ($1,500 for control arm and tie rod repairs). VW 1.8 turbo...oil sludging if you didn't know that VW changed the spec to synthetic after the manual stated that conventional was OK. So, I would appreciate any general commentary regarding significant issues to look for. Much appreciated...thanks for your input! DP

Could be something as simple as a bad motor mount. Take it back to your mechanic.

By and large the S40 has been a pretty good car. Just make sure you buy one that has been maintained properly.

Hello, could you please tell me what indicated to you that this was a needed replacement? I have a 2001 with a vibration in the gas pedal that's driving me bonkers!!

    Thanks

Hello, did you ever figure out what was with the shake/shimmy in the steering wheel that comes and goes for no apparent reason? Mine does the same...
    thanks

Although the problem I am replying to is 4 years old I have the same problem with a 2000 v40 with 80,000 miles on it. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced the same type of check engine light problem as bru8 described? (see link above to read his description.) I would really like to hear from anyone who has found a solution to the problem. Thanks.

I have a 2001 V40 (Phase II, almost 10 years old) with over 100.000 km on it. However apart from a few knobs and buttons that has started to wear out (and which are extremely expensive to replace) the car is still superb. It easily reaches 205 km/h on the highway, its fuel comsuption is probabily a litte bit high when compared to newer cars. But apart from the small crack in the back lid (above the key entrance) interestingly I have not experienced any of the problems mentioned in this forum. The car is a dream. The seats are the same as the V70, so is the automatic transmission. Its as comfortable as a car can be while driving. I sometimes think about replacing it with the new V50, but then feels the V40 is a better-qualitly, better designed car. Even my mechanic thinks it interesting that a car at this age and this milage is this problem-free. I changed the tyres once after I bought it, but I have been using the same break pads for 30.000 km now and they're still OK. Overall its a greatly designed and manufactured car and from what I hear the V70, the new V40 causes more problems than I have experienced in this old lady. (PS. My previous Volvo was a 1987 240GL station wagon, a pure legend)
