Sweet Ride Spyro. Is that the Garvin Industries Tilting Roof Rack? Have you used it yet with the top down? Gonna get a Winch for that big Bumper?

The Buzz site has a story on how the future of the Jeep Wrangler may be in Jeopardy , read it......

I recently took delivery of a new 2001 Wrangler Sport, stone white, tan hardtop/soft top(my 5th Jeep) and if anyone is interested I purchased it for $700 below invoice. Just mention dealer hold back and the $500 rebate and the numbers start to fall.

However, there were a few problems with the paint that should be mentioned. First, make sure when you take delivery that you really check the paint well. Mine had numerous iron or steel filings imbedded in the paint that were starting to rust. Second, the rubber grommets between the windshield hinges had pulled the paint off the hinges causing some surface rust. Other than those two things no problems yet

Great pics; your Jeep looks fantastic and tough as nails. We're still thinking about Tellico this fall and if you're there, I want to make sure I've got someone like you to pull our butts out (or maybe we can just get Alee to drive!).

f14jeep - welcome to the group. Sounds like a great looking jeep. I don't think you can beat a white Jeep with a tan top . I'll have to check my paint flaws to see if there are similar to the embedded metal rusting as yours did. I was hoping it was a piece of dirt or crud, btu will keep a close eye on it.

Thanks for the info on the chat. I was watching the Pittsburgh Penguins beat up on my Buffalo Sabres... but I'll have to pay more attention to the board here. You all sure have some fine looking rigs! I'm going to try to order a 2001 TJ before the 2001 model cutoff. Not sure when the 2002 will be available but there doesn't seem to be any changes to the TJ to warrant the wait for the 2002 and DC always kicks the $$$ a few bucks too!

If you don't mind me asking, how much did it cost for the A/C retrofit? Where did you get it done? Did it install right into the dash, or did they install an additional unit on top or under the dash? Does the jeep stay cool with the soft top on?

    Thanks!

great article. I find that column to offer a good dose of speculation tempered with reality. One concept that I would guess DC is looking into is the use of a side curtain mounted in the sport bar / cage. BMW uses a tube shaped bag in their cars that has mounting points at the top of the A pillar and the botttom of the B pillar. Due to an agressive salesman bent on showing me a 330i's capabilities, I can attest to the fact that this type of system can work. We clipped a curb on the passenger side at about 35 and the car thought we had been broadsided, activating the door panel air bag and head restraint system on my side. Glad he was driving and not me (although I am such an excellent driver, I would never do something so foolish ). $1100 in rims alone were destroyed.

Anyway, I think the article points out some good issues about how challenging it is for auto designers these days and the fact that the current TJ is as close to the origional from 60 years later is nothing short of amazing. The only other car with anything close to this lineage is the Porsche 911.

    Jeep On!

Who here takes the top off their jeep?
Who knows about the roll bars? Is it true they are not really roll bars? If so, can you retrofit it with real roll bars?

    thanks for any answers.
  • sasquatch_2000sasquatch_2000 Member Posts: 800
Who drives with the windshield down?

I remember seeing some guys doing that in NH when I was younger. They had bandanas on their head. I thought that was the best. Mirrored sunglasses and all.

If not on the road, who puts down the windscreen off road? Don't the bars stick out now? Are they removeable? If this is not a real roll cage, can it be removed?

This is from a posting I made somewhere else.

Apparently this is not as common as I thought (or wished). Maybe I _did_ get it mixed up with SRS (airbag) defeat switch.

However, for more info, check these out:

Be sure to check them ALL out, they are very informative and all very DIFFERENT articles. Some for 4X4's, some for cars, some are general. Hey, I bothered to find them, you can at least look.

P.S. Some of the url's might have a space you need to remove before trying the web site. The BBS software wouldn't take it otherwise.

My guess is that they will figure something out airbag-wise for the next Wrangler, but I'd also wager that the TJ will be the last Jeep with removable doors.

On the a/c retrofit: it can be pretty pricey. Shop around and be patient. I initially asked my dealer and they priced me about $1300 in parts and $600 in labor. You can imagine my response.

The next thing I did was talk to my mechanic about possible aftermarket kits, but he told me that since they are not specifically engineered to the Jeep (other than the interface) and have other problems with reliability I should stick with a Mopar kit. He also quoted me an even higher labor charge for him to do it, something like $800. I was feeling pretty down about it at this point, so I started cruising the web.

I eventually found a dealer in San Antonio TX (www.ancira.com) that sold a Mopar kit to me at cost, about $700 with shipping to Oregon. I had an a/c specialist shop here install it for about $400 cash. They have to take the dash apart to install so it is a reasonable price. Ancira still has the offer on their web site and they were a pleasure to deal with. Just make sure they don't charge you sales tax, they accidentally did to me and refunded it after I pointed out it was an interstate sale.

The kit uses factory a/c parts, so it is an in-dash unit. It works just fine with the soft-top and boy you need it during the day if you are out in the desert. Since I am moving to San Diego in a couple months I'm doubly glad I had it done.
  • sfjeepssfjeeps Member Posts: 66
The Jeep company no longer calls them roll bars because rolling is not a very good selling point, so the new term is "sports cage". Now having said that, the factory roll cage is very sturdy and safe with the only weak point being the bars that attaches to the front windshield. This doesn't make it unsafe but it can be much improved upon. The factory cage is not considered a full roll cage because there is only four true hard attach points (full cage has six or more). In the event of a low speed roll over, with the stock cage, you will more then likely crumple the windshield frame and crack the glass but you will be protected by the heavy bar right behind and your head (all bets are off on high speed roll overs). This is a very safe method and has worked very well over the years.

Many people (myself included) have installed a bolt in full front cage that will not use the front windshield frame for support but rather the floor or the body. The cages do take away some space but if you get into off camber situations rather ofen a full cage is a good idea.

    manufacturer? costs? self install?

what did the old cj5 have? the old landcruiser(did it have ANYTHING AT ALL?)?

I do have photos but I don't have any posted as of yet, email me and I'll send them to anyone who wants a look. My TJ cage is a bolt in one and I wound up welding in my own spreader bars so I wound have even more strength and I could center mount my CB and other gear overhead. My cage ran around $350 from 4WD Supplier and mounts to the tub as opposed to MORE that mounts to the floor. I wanted my legroom (I'm 6' tall) and use of my AC. The MORE is a stronger cage if you use the frame tie in kit (welding required)but attaching the roll cage to the tub is an acceptable mount point.

The older CJs had just a 4 point cage and didn't even mount to the windshield. The Wranglers were the only ones that had bars connecting to the roll bar to the windshield.
I don't recall what the land cruser had for cages, I a Jeep buff.

Nice pics....and it looks GREAT! Did you have to do any fabrication with the parts to get it to fit correctly or did the cage bolt (or weld) right in? What do you think the final cost was with cage parts, CB mount & welding, etc? How much time to bolt it in? Wow...I'm getting good at asking a lot of questions, huh? ;)

Excellent pictures and a neat installation. Two questions. What method is used to fix the downtubes to the dash panel? And, do you have a contact number or website for the supplier?

I picked up a set of tow hooks for the front bumper of my tj.
Can someone tell me if they are bolted down using the bumper bolts, or do I have to drill new holes. If I use the bumper bolts, do I have to buy longer ones for the added height of the hooks?

Thank you for the warm welcome. I enjoyed your picture of Thelma Jane. The first new vehicle I owned was an '82 CJ7 Laredo white with tan hard top, so I was drawn to this color scheme for my 2001, but white/black is also extremely sharp.

For anyone interested, my fatherly $.02 about Jeep Wranglers. After owning many vehicles throughout my life, including various years of Jeeps, my experience is this. If you keep up on the exterior of these vehicles (ie. touching up paint chips, oiling hinges, waxing etc...), they will hold their value extremely well. And, if you perform the correct routine maintenance, they are very affordable to operate.

Just a thought, but anyone use carseats in the backseat of their TJ? Not the infant ones, but the "bucket-like" ones for kids 40-70lbs. I am curious how they worked out over the long haul.

Secondly, thanks to everyone for answering my Jeep questions as I try to get under the deadline to order a 2001 Wrangler!

f14jeep: Nice to see another sailor here! I'll be your way in July for AT.... hopefully with my new Wrangler!

Do you mean you got your Jeep for $200 below invoice and the rebate made it actually $700 below invoice? Or did you get it for $700 below invoice and the rebate mage it $1200 below invoice?

I'm thinking it must be the first way, right? If so, that's a GREAT deal, but if it is the second way, all I can say is "Wow."

Also, if you are going to stick with us, and I sure hope you will, could you please post in "Meet the Members?"

Your info in this main board will be lost in the sea of posts, and if someone wanted to refresh their memory about your particulars, they would have a hard time finding your post again.

That's why I have been asking folks to take advantage of the Meet the Members board. That's what it's for.

If you don't mind telling us some stuff about yourself, give us some of your personal info, like where you live, your email address, your family situation, your Instant Message screen name (if you have one), a link to a web site or to pics of your Jeep, etc. Just post what you are comfortable with: you certainly have your right to privacy. All I can say is that others here and I have posted this info, and I know it hasn't been a problem for me.

And of course, a detailed description of your Jeep is a must!

How could anything you ever do even come close to that for excitement?

Been to Top Gun? Like in the movie? What percentage of the pilots get that training? Is that limited to just a handfull?

How about your first night landing on a carrier? Tell us about it! I can't believe people do that!

Man, would I ever like to have a nice long conversation with you! I am amazed by this stuff, in case you couldn't tell.

The bars that bolt to the windshield and the the rear of the main roll cage was supplied by 4wheelers and is all bolt in. The down tubes are attached by supplied bolts and will anchor where the dash board attaches. Everything from 4wheelers lined up rather well and install was fairly easy. If you have a hard top, you will have to modify the latches for the wind shield frame but cutting them shorter. The added spreader bars were welded in by myself and it was a very simple job. The last time I checked on the price of the bolt in cage was around $350.00 and I would guess the added spreader bars would be an additional $100.00 for someone to make and weld them in. Mountain Off Road also has a very god roll cage and you can get everything competely bolted in without any welding but the downtubes are attached to the floor.

    Hey all

Just thought I'd relay this. There's a little 15-foot long bit of street that, for some reason, has started to ripple near my apartment. I've really enjoyed driving my Jeep over it - I get the feeling I'm sort of off-roading! I had gotten used to it, though, until today. I was walking to my parked Jeep when I was passing the area where the ripple was...Suddenty I heard a ghastly banging/scratching noise and I looked to see a little Honda hatchback trying to go over the ripple (despite two sandwich board warning signs) and obviously reaking havoc on its underside. I got in my Jeep and drove over the exact same spot with no problems - even drove over a sandwich board warning sign that had folded and toppled flat onto the ground! Made me pretty happy to be up there in my rig. :-)

Hey, scomo, got that Jeep ordered yet?

You're getting down to the wire for the cut off date, you know.

My advice on the tops... Be sure you have the soft top! I don't have any suggestions about whether you should go with the dual tops, but if you are only going to have one top, be sure to get the soft top. I sure wish that I had done that!

I guess the one thing that I would tell you about the hard top is that now is the time to get it, if you think you will ever want one. The dual top option will give you original equipment tops cheaper than you will ever be able to get them later. I priced a factory soft top from my dealer, and they wanted $950 for it! That was supposedly at their cost.

As far as the air conditioning, that would be a tough call for your area. Around here, in western Ky., it's a no brainer. With our heat and humidity and the length of the summers, it is a MUST.

In your shoes, I might forgo the air conditioning in favor of the dual tops, if it's a matter of one or the other.

The only thing is, if there's a chance that you might relocate to a warmer part of the country, you would wish you had the air conditioning.

But whatever you are gonna do, you'd better get going: the deadline approaches! "Cagiamo o scendiamo da la tazza!"

Have you hugged your Jeep today?

P.S. TracLoc... Get it! I wish I had know the usefulness of it when I ordered Thelma Jane! Goducks1 and a couple others on the board say that it is great for snow and ice. I thought it was just something for offroading, so I didn't get it. You DO have a little snow and ice during Buffalo winters, right? :) I don't know about the ABS, but if Mr. Goducks likes it, he has the experience, and I would take his word for it. That would mean that you can't get the Dana 44 rear end, but that's probably not necessary anyway.
  • f14jeepf14jeep Member Posts: 7
You are correct, I walked out of the dealership paying $700 below invoice. Believe me, I tried to get it $1200 below, but they weren't too keen about a $39 profit.

    About your other question.

Oh baby! Just been out cruising in Thelma Jane without the top and doors. A PERFECT day for it too!

Took Momma and my granddog, Ross Allen, to Walmart to get Ross a couple toys for his birthday. Momma stayed in the Jeep to baby sit Ross while Grandpa went in the store and got the toys.

Then, we did Ross Allen's favortie thing. We went through the drive thru at Mc Donalds and got Ross a hamburger.

After that, we cruised around town a little.

    Man, what fun that was!

Yes, they bolt into the same place as the two bolts on the front bumper. That's where the frame tips are and the strongest point on the entire bumper. You don't want to put them anywhere else. If the hooks didn't come with longer bolts then yes you will need to buy new ones. Make sure you get Grade 8 bolts as anything else has two low of a sheering weight. Sorry this is late, havn't been on recently.

Did you get mirror movers or is it legal in KY to drive with no outside mirrors? I installed my left side mirror mover today and had the doors off!!! I threw the nuts used to hold the doors on away. I do not see the need for them because when the door is shut it is secure and if anyone wants to steal my doors they must have a Jeep and know that there are only 2 small nuts holding them on to begin with.
  • tsjaytsjay Member Posts: 4,591
