Just wanted to say thanks for the warm welcome.

Dwrangler- yeah it took quite a bit of time to read all of those messages and it was quite a headache causer, but I think it was worth it just for all of the information that I got.

Tsjay- I hear ya about choosing the wife over the Wrangler. In retrospect I should have gone the other way, but hindsight is 20/20.

Oceantoad- I do plan on ordering my Jeep. I just want to wait for pricing before deciding exactly what I want. As Texasjeep said, the Rubicon is coming out and I'd love to have one of those, but I just don't know about the money on that one. We'll have to wait and see. Of course, if I get the Rubicon I'll miss out on adding all of the mods later on so I don't know about that.

Bamatazz- too bad you still aren't into taking Tazz wheelin' because I'm going to be looking for someone to hit the trails with. Since we're both in AL that would be convenient.

I haven't seen Alan Jackson's apparently lame video but I have a poster of him sitting in his CJ and it looks lifted and it has a Ramsey Winch on the front bumper. Also there is an insurance agent here in town whose first name is Jeep, there might be an interesting story behind his name, maybe I'll ask him about it. Eat,sleep,Jeep, life is good- Tjray

The chat room is working again, and we had a good session tonight with debs, kahuna, rick, and me. Gill was even there for a while.

So, tomorrow night (Saturday), let's all go there!

Welcome to the board! Good to have another Jeeper amongst us. I'm not too far across the line into GA and would be up for some offroading in your state sometime after you get your Jeep. We're heading over into Taladega NF today to do some hiking and exploring on the forest roads. Apparently some of the forest service roads aren't very well maintained and require good ground clearance. We're going to stop at the ranger station in Heflin to pick up a map and talk to the rangers. Hopefully they'll be able to steer us off the beaten path.

texasjeep - I'd like to get the info on the Jeep decals. I've seen them on eBay but would like to now who you got them from. Did you get you BulletProof in the standard width? Pics on their site don't do a great job of shots directly on center.

I got my disconnects installed yesterday. Took about an hour to get everything in place, but I can get the sway bar disconnected in about 30 seconds now. I went with the JKS ones, which were pricey, but very well designed and built.

I am interested in buying my first jeep wrangler. This is strictly to be used as a "fun" car as I already have an everyday car.

I have found a 1998 Wrangler SE with 23,000 miles. It has a 4 cylinder and NO air. The price is $11,400 after negotiation.

Should I be opting for the 6 or do you think the 4 will be sufficient for driving to the store, gym, and occasional runs through some mild dirt?

What other questions should I be asking or what problems should I look for before buying this?

    Thanks!
  • goducks1goducks1 Member Posts: 432
The 4 will be OK for the things you listed. The place most people notice the lack of power is on the highway, where you will find yourself in the slow lane alot. The 4 has plenty of torque for around town. I assume you are talking about a 5-speed here.

The no-air thing is a bigger problem. I originally bought my 1998 6-cylinder w/o air and later had it retrofitted with a factory system. Even in the relatively cool Northwest (where I was living at the time) a/c is needed sometimes, and on road trips you won't want to have the top down for hours on end. There is no insulation in the firewall to keep engine heat out of the passenger compartment and it can get pretty hot in there w/o a/c.
  • whitespcwhitespc Member Posts: 4
Goducks1, how much was it to have the air added?

I purchased the car... I ended up getting it for $11,000. No air and 4 cylinder...

How does this do in the snow or in the mud with only 4 cylinders?

Just bought a 98 Wrangler SE. It has stock wheels and I want to replace these....

What would be a good size replacement that offers a bit more width and height? I do not want to throw off the speedometer and I do not need any mud/swamp diggers since I will probably only get through some sand or dirt trails.

    Thanks
  • tsjaytsjay Member Posts: 4,591
First off, welcome to the group. Congrats on getting that Jeep!

I really like my AR767 wheels, and they are only about $40 apiece most places. They are the black spoke wheels. For tires, I really like the BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A's that I had before going to the BFG Mud Terrains I have now.

You should be able to go with 31 x 10.50 tires, even if the Jeep has no lift of any kind. That's what I did for a while with no problem, even though I now have a 2" Procomp lift.

I have some pics posted here in the Jeep Owners Photo Gallery, if you want to take a look at those AR767s.

    TS,
Think I will be able to 4 wheel considering I bought only a 4 cylinder? Also, do you think the 4 cylinder can still drive the wheel size you mentioned?

    Thanks
  • mtngalmtngal Member Posts: 1,911
I like the looks of the BFG all-terrains, but ended up getting the Bridgestone Duellers. I really like them, and they are definitely better than the Goodyears.

4 cylinder is fine for most off-roading. You don't need to go very fast in the dirt. Don't know if it would matter to you, but you can't use chains or cables with wider tires, including the 30" tires that came on my Sport. When I bought mine, I wasn't worried about snow, however, while I was 4 wheeling in our local mountains I found a lovely community that is (more or less) within commuting range from work and moved. Now snow is a regular part of my winters, so I think I'll get the smaller tires on my next Wrangler.

There is often a problem with the dash gauges in the '98. I called a dealer this morning and got a guy who said that it would be 3 hours of labor to fix, but I don't think he knew what he was talking about (there is a TSB out for the problem). I also had to replace my exhaust manifold, but I have the I6 - don't know if they are the same on the 4 cylinder.

In any case, enjoy your Wrangler - I know I love mine. I'm really looking forward to taking it up to Washington this summer - I refuse to drive all that way in the Tacoma, even if we don't do any 4x4 stuff!

Hey all you jeep fans out there.....I have a 1998 jeep wrangler and I recently noticed my cigarette lighter is not working......I usually plug my phone in there.....but no juice.......do you guys have any idea where the fuse is for this.........its not listed anywhere in the owners manual.....and I checked behind the glove compartment (it's not listed)....and I looked under the hood next to the battery......nothing states which fuse is for the lighter.....I even called the dealer....the service guy had no idea and wants me to bring it in ........I'd rather not spend that kind of labor charge for a simple fuse.......any ideas?.......
  • tsjaytsjay Member Posts: 4,591
Sure, you can go with 31's with a four cylinder, especially if it's a five speed. And, heck yeah, you can sure wheel a four cylinder! They are just as good on the trail as a six, cause ya gotta remember, you're in four wheel low range when you are wheelin'. You don't begin to use all the power of a six cylinder when you are in four low.

For wheelin and around town, the four cylinder is fine. It's just not good for highway driving of any distance.

On the 01's like mine, the fuse for the power outlet is #19 and it's a 20 amp fuse. I guess it would be the same on your Jeep, but I can't be sure of that.

    Hope this helps.

Oh, Geek, you didn't say how long you've had your Jeep, but did you know that the power outlet is only "hot" when the ignition is on? That's something I would like to change about my Thelma Jane. I wish that power outlet was hot at all times, so I could charge my cell phone without the engine running.

Ross Allen, Thelma Jane, and I went wheelin' yesterday over at Turkey Bay. We didn't find any other Jeeps to hook up with, so we stayed mostly on the main trail. It was still enjoyable. Even the drive over there and back was fun. Heck, anytime you are in a topless/doorless Jeep you are having fun!

The new safari top is working out pretty well. It still leaves Ross Allen in the sun, unless he gets up close to the back of the front seats. I don't like him riding back by the tail gate anyway.

After a day of Jeepin', RA and I took a nap, and then we took Thelma to the car wash and got the mud off of her. Next on the agenda was a good hand washing at home. That mud at Turkey Bay makes the white letters turn yellow, but an SOS pad works wonders to bring them back to white.

After the hand washing job was done, it was close to dark and the temperature was really pleasant. So, loaded up the Mrs. and RA and headed for the Sonic Drive In. That was fun!

I can't believe how much fun a Jeep is! Even after all these months, I am like a kid with a new toy. Why didn't I get a Jeep years and years ago? Man, all the money I have spent trading cars so often! I would have been happy with a Jeep and would have kept it for years. I might have traded for a TJ when they came out, if I had owned a YJ for a few years, but I would not have traded about every year like I have. The way I feel now, I can't see ever trading Thelma Jane.

I bought the kit for cost (around $650) from a dealer in Texas--see http://www.ancira.com/parts/chrysler/, they still seem to be selling them at cost--and shipping was another $30. Give them a call, they seemed very nice on the phone. Make sure they don't charge you sales tax if you live outside of Texas, they accidentally did so to me but took it off when I made a fuss.

Labor from an independent a/c specialist was about $300 (he gave me a discount for paying in cash). So altogether it was about $1000.

Tom, are you saying that you really like your Jeep? Was not sure if that is what you meant.:) Might be better to try and hook up on the backside of the trip, will talk to you more on that. Jean has redone the web page so it is quicker to get into. She got rid of the goat pictures and added one in your honor, I'll let you figure out which one.

    www.home.earthlink.net/~oceantoad/

BigK, happy birthday you old timer. Jean also included a picture of a doily so that you can see what you are missing. I told you that she was mean like that.

For a guy who was never gonna wash his Jeep, you sure seem to have a spotless one there???

Looks GOOD! Looks like your center pieces are different than mine. Mine have black decals on the ends with "American Racing" written on them. Yours look like they are all chrome.

I don't care if it's on your way up or on your way back, but let's try to hook up for a cup of coffee or a meal when you come through Bowling Green or wherever you are at your closest point to me. Heck, I might even buy. :)

Hey guys, thanks for the birthday wish. Even though I didn't get a doily for my birthday, I did get an E-card from Tom! Oh well, maybe by Christmas, Jean will have softened some. :)
By the way, there is a fire somewhere in Canada and the smoke has traveled all the way to Philadelphia! The sky looked surreal today, it had a dark, orange look. Very weird.

Tom, I took my 2000 tj to the dealer where I bought it and asked if they could make the lighter live all the time. They screwed around with it for a couple of hours. I think the tech told me they finally figured out all they had to do was move the cigarrete lighter wire to the terminal for the un-swithced fuse on the fuse block. I think the owner's manual says which one it is. Anyway, they didn't charge me to do it.

I live in Massachusetts. 90's here last week, and again today and tomorrow.

I have NO USE for AC. That is why I got a convertible!

Pulling the boat around, I have only seen one other Jeep towing. No problems at all with towing.
  • scmhockeyscmhockey Member Posts: 45
I have been towing an 18 1/2 foot boat around and having no major issues. Only thing is that I need to plan way ahead for stops. The brakes just don't work anywhere near as well. And I try to avoid braking while turning. With the short wheel base, I can see jack-knifing as a real possibility.

I think you'll do OK in 4 cylinders. Heck, the original Jeeps we won the war with had what, less than 60 HP and the 2.5 4 cylinders have what maybe 115 at least? That's DOUBLE.

If still not enough for you, there are mods you can make to add power. Look here for some help:

If you have the narrow wheels, I'd say go for new ones.

If not, I'd say keep the stock ones to save money.

I have a 1997 Sport with stock steel wheels with 31X10.50 inch tires.

I'd say, based on your description of driving, that some generic AT or AP type tires would do you just fine. I'd probably say something in 235/75R15 to 255/70R15 would do fine. If you don't need the knobby offroad lugs, I'd recommend against them to keep the ride quieter, and provide better road manners, and maybe even mileage. Even a car tire on a jeep would do fine in sand and mild offroad conditions. I've seen Jeeps with fat performance tires, which are used in mostly dunes at the Cape. I'd guess they were BFG TA's or noname type "performance" tires in like a 285/60R15 size or something. They will still get you around town nicely, and also get you out on the dunes to your favorite fishing spot.

    Good luck.

I just read in auto.com that DC will replace the temporary 7 yrs./100,000 mile warranty with a transferrable 7yrs./70,000 mile warranty on all Jeep vehicles. I am not sure when this goes into play, but at least the new warranty will be transferrable.

    Regarding a/c:
I am considering it even though I do not plan on using it much, but I did read in the Jeep Owner's Bible that by ordering it, you would get some heavier duty engine components and that the defrost would work better with a/c since it would be able to remove humidity as opposed to simply blowing warm air on the windshield. Also, resale is always a possibility and a/c helps on the resale price.

OK, everyone, we need to keep Oceantoad's dad in our prayers. He has serious health problems and has taken a dramatic turn for the worse. Toad is on his way from Texas to somewhere in northern Ky near Cincinnati to be with his dad. Let's ask the Good Lord to watch over Toad as he drives and to be with Toad's dad and the rest of the family.

Don't think a cell phone would draw enough power to amount to anything, Nony Mouse. Maybe if it stayed plugged in for days on end without the engine being started and run for a while.
