Historically speaking the GPS antennas were located in the rear package shelf. So I do understand their concerns, being tint application specialist, that the tinting could interfere with GPS reception since they aren't vehicle specialists. Despite this minor issue, they might have saved you from other reception headaches.

Most of the new diversity antenna systems (like those found on the Camry) incorporate a printed antenna on the back window. It has been reported that metallic window tint degrades FM and AM reception. The metallic particals suspended in the film can change the electrical characteristics of the antenna system by changing or shorting out the circuit. In other scenarios, the antenna leads printed onto the glass are cut when a tinter trims the excess inside the vehicle with a razor blade. So in conclusion you might not want that metallic window tint after all.

I seem to have read there is a "work around" for the nav system to allow inputs while in motion. Does anyone havr this information to share?

Check navigation section of TCH (Camry Hybrid) Forum. There are ways to accesss it with sysrem 5.1 Nav., but not 6,1

Yes I would be interested in this too. Is there a way to bypass the Nav system to play DVD's?

Does the camry navigation allow you to control car temperature and other functions like the honda accord navi

No, no climate control. But if you have a package with navigation, you have automatic dual climate control so you can just set the temperature and turn "auto" on and forget about it. Not much use for voice control.

Anyone experience problems with their NAV system freezing? The dealer says that the LCD crystals freeze and their is no fix for this.
  • Options
    navguynavguy Member Posts: 61
The LCD screen will be slow anytime the temperature is near or below freezing. Why is this? LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display... so it is susceptible to extreme temperatures - either hot or cold. The Camry's Navigation Owners Manual states this on page three.

My navigation system in my 2002 Camry keeps displaying a message about the wrong DVD being in there. But that is the same DVD I have had in it since I bought it. Any suggestions? Please help :confuse:

The NAV functionality in the camry is horrible. My Garmin is hands down a better more intuitive system. If you input a POI for say "donuts", my Garmin will list all the donut places in order of closest to farthest and display the miles to each location. The Toyo Nav's first donut location is a place in Delaware, the 2nd is New Jersey. I'm in Washington, DC.

I don't know. I looked again and the actual message on my Nav system is "Cannot read data" Check for correct DVD. I'm thinking I need to get a new DVD Rom? I tried to copy it and during the download it said that a file was corrupted. I just don't want to get a new one and the DVD isn't the problem. Also, do current model DVD's work in a later model Navi system? i.e. 2004-2005 Navi DVD in a 2002 Camry?

Sounds like the disc is not readable for some reason. You could try cleaning it. Otherwise it might be a good excuse to get the latest disc. No, you can't use discs from newer vehicles. They are not interchangeable. But you can still get an upgrade for your model. Otherwise you could look for a used disc on ebay.

The Camry nav will behave this way if you search by POI Category. There's no "donut" category, however. (Try Fast Food or Coffee Shops).

It seems as if the navigation computer has failed. To confirm, can you eject the DVD map disc? If so, what is the part number on the disc.... 86271-?. If the disc does not eject the drive has probably failed.

That very same part can be obtained from a Toyota dealership as an out of warranty product. The part number is 86841-33060-OW... shop around for the best price. The computer comes with a one-year warranty from Toyota.

I have had my 2007 Camry for about a month now and the Nav system is one of the poorest in terms of accuracy and detail that I've seen. It is missing major roads where I live, it is usually way off (despite re-calibration) and when I entered my home address, it showed me living about 3 blocks away from where I actually live. I have a $200 Magellan portable GPS unit that is dead nuts on, without any calibration. Im hoping that when a newer version map comes out it will be much better.

This deal about not being about to search POIs while moving is lame as well. When the family is driving down the highway and my kids want to know where the closest McDonalds is, I have to stop. Why cant the passenger enter data? There has got to be a work around for this.

    mdchachimdchachi Member Posts: 275
If the current position is frequently not correct then maybe you have an antenna problem. (You don't use a radar detector do you?)

One workaround for the POI problem is that you can display icons on the screen for fast food restaurants etc (either by voice -- "Show fast food restaurans" -- or by using the 8 POI categories listed under Map View). Then you can zoom in/out and scroll around to find the closest McD's. Those 8 POI categories available while driving are user-configurable, by the way, in the settings menu.

There is a widely published "override" available, depending on what version of map DVD you have. Do an Edmunds (or google) search on "Nav override." While this is not perfect, it does allow passangers to have full control as you mentioned.

Here is just one sourch for the instructions I quickly found: Override instructions It works on my 2007 Camry.

The accuracy of the directions is just horrible. I wanted to get from Gainesville, VA to Garrisonville, VA. The Toyota Nav wanted me to drive roughly 40 miles out of my way to get there. I tried Quick 1, Quick 2 and shortest route. All wanted me to go 66 to 495 to 95. My Garmin took me the best route. What are the differences is quick 1, quick 2 and short?

    mdchachimdchachi Member Posts: 275
Just for grins, I input Gallaher Rd, Gainsville to Monna Lee Dr, Stafford (Garrisonville?) and Quick1/Short both go through route 619. Only Quick2 goes the roundabout freeway way. What is the version of your map?

I believe it's the newest 6.1. Car build date was Jan 07. I had to go there 3 times this past week. Twice it did choose 619, but knowing the area well I knew to take the bypass which is directly off of 66. Recalculating all 3 wanted to go to 495 for some strange reason. It really is a love/hate relationship. I had to actually go from Garrisonville to Merrifield yesterday. To my suprise, the Camry Nav had the Springfield interchange information correct, my Garmin did not, even though my Garmin had the most up to date maps.

I have a 2007 toyota camry hybrid with the navigation system and blue tooth phone. I use my motorola razr phone with the system. If I am on the phone and I loose the signal, my bluetooth phone system freezes up so that I cannot use the speed dial. The screen shows that I am still talking although I know that is not the case. It does not unfreeze until someone calls me or I dial a phone number using my motorola phone. Any one have that same issue?

"Can you use a newer version Navigation DVD on an older Navigation System? I have a 6.1 Navigation Map DVD for my 2002 Camry and want to get an updated DVD. "

jbelle, I don't understand your question. Do you have a 2002 Camry with Nav? I didn't realize they made NAV systems in 2002 Camrys.

If you are asking if there is a newer map version than 6.1, I don't think so yet..perhaps late summer 07.

Generaly speaking, there are different generations of NAV systems, and usually Toyota will make updated Map DVDs available for them, but the DVD must be specific for the hardware in your car. As an example, I have a friend who has an 06 Highlandr and an 07 Camry. The 06 Highlander and the 07 camry have different generations of NAV system hardware. A 6.1 DVD from the 07 Camry will not work in the 06 Highlander, but there is an updated v6.1 map DVD available for the either system, they have different part numbers.

The NAV system instructions are far from intuitive. Has anyone created a simple how to (i.e., This then This then This) to assist elderly non-computer savvy seniors??

Simple 1,2,3 steps to program my places, etc.?? :confuse:

:confuse: o7 camry se with nav. All the sudden have no gps indicator on screen. Now my current position/location is not correct. Calibrated current position several times. Could this be a bad gps antenna? no radar detector in use did tint the windows but used non reflective/no lead content tint.Would like to go into dealer with what I think it may be. I professionally installed car electronics 17years and have some sort of ideah this may be the problem. Once in a great while lately it will give gps indicator but not for long. Help!!

Boy!!!!!!!!!! Will I second that request. I sold my 07 Camry XLE with 4,000 miles on it because of the damn Navigation. We seniors need a course, and not on online course, from the dealer to learn how to operate the system. You know men-we don't read instructions and to top it all off, the system has a women telling us where to turn.

Oh well, our days are numbered anyway!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please take your vehicle to your local Toyota dealership and have them check TSIB EL012-06. They will order a disc to correct the issue you are experiencing.

Really? There must have been some other things you didn't like about the car. If you don't like the navigation then the easiest solution is not to use it. I bet most people that own nav don't use it much either.

I found out Toyota's NAV has better resolution than Honda's. I like Toyota's graphic better, but its voice recognition sucks. It hardly understands what I am trying to say, and very awkward to use the voice command.

The car interior looks much better with Nav. Overall the NAV is accurate but somehow annoying. It keeps saying the route guidance when I am using it. Sometimes I just suspend it until we approach to the destination.

Isn't that the point of route guidance? ;-) Doesn't Honda give vocal guidance as well?

The NAVIGATION SYSTEM Instructions Are the worst thing I have ever recived from Toyota. The car is great like all the other 13 Toyota cars before it, If toyota starts making it cars like the NAV.SYSTEM Instructions. We Toyota customers are in trouble. Loyal Toyota customer. Ellwood Decker

What exactly is your 2002 Camry doing in regards to navigation? Do you see the GPS icon at the top left of the screen? Do you receive turn-by-turn directions? Do you get some type of error message displayed on the screen?

Note* - 2002 Camry requires a GEN2/3 DVD map disc. The correct part number is 86271-3303X. The higher the last digit (X) the newer the disc.

My Garmin c340 won't work in my 2007 Camry XLE if the power cord is connected to the 12 volt outlet regardless whether the unit itself is in the cradle of the connector cord or just being run on battery. If I disconnect the cord and reboot my unit on battery power, I can acquire a satellite fix. No help from Garmin or Toyota. What gives?

I just bought a new Camry, and I was wondering if anyone knew how to change the prompt when I press the voice button to a simple beep. Listening to the lady tell me to say my command after the beep every time I press the button is driving me crazy!

Also, does anyone know a reference that has all of the available voice commands for nav/audio/bluetooth/etc?

    Thanks!

To avoid the instructions do the following:

    Press the 'MENU' panel button.
    Touch 'SETUP'
    Scroll down to page 2/3.
Touch 'OFF' for Voice Recognition Guidance.
Touch 'OK' at the bottom right.

Once you have followed these steps no more voice prompts for state, city, street or house number when inputting an address via voice recognition.... just a beep.

The Camry is USA specification therefore a foreign disc will not be compatible due to the different operating systems.
