jb. They have those mirrors on Japanese LCs, don't know if they're on any in other countries or not

I have a 97 LX 450, 55,000 miles, exc condition. While shifting into drive a very obvious delay occurs in the driveline engaging, kind of a "clunk". Sounds like some "play" has developed somewhere. Extended warranty in effect - will call dealer tomorrow. Any ideas? Thank you.
  • idahodougidahodoug Member Posts: 537
For starters, DON'T bring it to the dealer until you can verify the oil levels in the transmission, differentials and center differential are all at their proper levels. You wouldn't belive how many warranty claims get kicked back to the owner because a dealer tech writes "trannsmission found to be 1 quart low on fluid, rear differential slightly below the full line". Drop $30 at a quick lube place if you cannot verify this yourself, because if low fluid is not the cause of this clunk, someone's gonna be writing a very big check soon. Don't let 'em hang it around your neck.

Just in passing, does it do this in reverse as well? How about when you're in low range? Ever had the drive shafts greased?

Does this occur when you shift from P to D after starting on an incline?
  • tuition06tuition06 Member Posts: 20
thanks I will check fluid levels right away. the noise is not present going into reverse, only drive and it does occur on flat ground.
  • tuition06tuition06 Member Posts: 20
The transfer case was slightly short of fluid, noise (looseness), clunk is still present. Could there be slack in the chain in the transfer case with only 55k on vehicle? If the transfer case is the problem, do you think they will replace or repair it under their warranty?

Does anyone have suggestions about where to buy a used land cruiser...preferably a 2000 with low mileage? I've looked in the area where I live and haven't found anything and need one soon to replace car totaled in an auto accident.
    Thanks

We have a buying link off the main edmunds.com page. Then there's eBay Motors. Some independent mechanics sell cars on their lots or have customers interested in selling (especially a 4WD specialist in your area).

And you can always cruise the Wal-Mart parking lot and ask an owner if they are thinking of trading in on a new one. Sometimes that triggers the new car reflex if they know they have an easy sale of their old one.

It's really difficult to find "good" used car in a limited amount of time, especially a Land Cruiser with low mileage. I used to read the classiflieds in our local paper every morning. If impossible go check out the car right away. That's how I purchased my Land Cruiser.

I let friends and relatives know I'm interested in buying a certain vehicle. You never know.

    Good Luck.

FYI Toyota's web pages on the LC are now updated for the 2004 model. No shocking news.

Macc, I recently purchased a used LC from a guy who goes to auctions across the country looking for vehicles for people. Got me a great '99, in blue that I wanted, not a single door ding or scratch, with perfect interior. It took him a little while, but I wasn't in a hurry and wanted a hard to find color and excellent condition. Let me know if you want his info.

I have a 1998 TLC with 105k miles. I have been researching replacement of the timing belt.

The local Toytota dealer maintenance department has limited (can you say no) experience with the V8 as they only sell 2-3 LCs per year. Quite frankly, I'm hesitant to have them experiment on mine. I've considered taking it to the Lexus dealership as I'm sure they got greater experience with the V8.

However, I've surfed into some websites that essentially recommend "wait till it breaks" with the V8. The theory? No engine damage is expected if the belt breaks because the valves and pistons by design cannot physically contact each other.

Anybody been down this path before?

I'm ready for new tires on my 97 LX 450. Any problem with clearance if I use 285's instead of 275/75/16. Been reading the reviews on tirerack.com for the bridgestone dueler A/T Revos. The reviews sound too good to be true. Any assistance would be appreciated.
  • steelcruisersteelcruiser Member Posts: 402
285s fit fine. Don't know about the BStones. I've always gone with BFGs. Goodyear MTRs are also very popular with lots of LC owners.
  • hank14hank14 Member Posts: 133
I put the LT 285/75/16 Revos on my '99 last week. Not enough time to objectively evaluate, but, compared to the unmatched Mich M/S's, they ride much better. They are noisier than I expected, but that doesn't concern me much, because I wanted the aggressive tread and the LT 8 ply design. I was shocked at how much they filled up the front wheel wells, as fj100 had said, but they don't rub at all.

Be sure and read the post Hicaira had 2-3 weeks ago.

I am thinking about buying a 2004 Land Cruiser but would like more horsepower. Does anyone have any experience installing and driving a Cruiser with a supercharger?

Hello all. I am the owner of a 1989 fj62 landcruiser with 120,000 miles. Have owned about 6 months and I love it! I live in Alaska where I have driven through mountainous roads (going fishing) and noticed the transmission around gearshift lever gets very hot. Is this normal? Also tends to wheeze out when going uphill to the point where you need to downshift to keep momentum and maintain speed while going uphill {this is w/o towing anything!).Therefore, I am a little skeptical (scared) of towing something up an incline. My question is, with the added weight of towing a pop-up type camper or anything) weighing 3,500lbs(+/-) which is it's rated towing capacity, does anyone think or know it to be a problem for the engine/tranny trying to tow anything of max towing capacity (especially uphill)? The engine/tranny have a rep for being bulletproof, yet I want to err on the side of caution. I have never towed with it before. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
  • grantchstrgrantchstr Member Posts: 371
For what its worth my Fj80 1991 has a hot L/H lever. Seems to run just fine for 12 years so far. Never towed but had it in sand dunes and it was hot then as well.
  • joeeblow1joeeblow1 Member Posts: 238
Dunno what kind of hills you're talking about, but with reduced power and high heat, you might see if your catalytic convertor is plugged. Try contacting Mark Whatley or Jack Conrad in Wasilla for Cruiser help.
  • ffitzffitz Member Posts: 13
    thank you for your input.
grantchstr: My shifter handle gets hot as yours does. Maybe common trait in early landcruisers(?)

    joeeblow1
: Just had IM done. Good suggestion on checking cat-converter. Thank you for that suggestion on lc contacts in Wassila
  • idahodougidahodoug Member Posts: 537
You don't have transfer case, it's a much sturdier center differential w/no chain. All gears and very sturdy. Even guys who put big blocks and 40" tires up against that center diff don't have problems, so your slack is likely elsewhere.

    Grant,

That's an interesting maintenance guide. I think it would be great for the avg guy trying to estimate cost of ownership or something. I prefer the several-levels-down detail of my factory manual if you're the type who'll actually DO this work, of course. Nice find.

TLCfor4 asked about timing belt replacement. I'm also interested, since my 2000 has 92k miles. Doesn't the Tundra & Sequioia have the same engine? I haven't found much discussion regarding replacement advice.
  • grantchstrgrantchstr Member Posts: 371
I have a 1991 Fj80 with 105,000 - never had a timing chain replacement. When in my future should I do something?
  • fj100fj100 Member Posts: 97
The '91 LC has the 3FE engine with timing gears. No belt needed. Should run to 300k miles no problem.
  • stickman3stickman3 Member Posts: 11
Any thoughts on a cheaper alternative to replacing a stolen spare? Dealer wants $325 for the wheel. I am fine with a steel rim if there is some aftermarket alternative. Have checked junk yards and ebay...no luck. 2000 LC the tire size is P275/70R16. I know I am already in for tire $180, cable/carrier $105
  • joeeblow1joeeblow1 Member Posts: 238
IMO you should be able to find a used spare for a reasonable price, since some folks have gone to larger tires. Contact TAP to see if they have any spare rims, etc (www.taprecycling.com). Specter offroad probably has any parts, too. They aren't cheap.

Hi All, I have a 2003 LC with about 4000 miles on it now. It just recently developed a nasty buzzing sound that is coming from the 4WD Hi-Lo shifter. It usually happens when you are going about 30-40 mph and when you step on the gas (barely) it will emit a buzzing noise from the shifter. If you put you hand over the shifter, you can feel how badly the thing vibrates. Has anyone come acroos this before? Is this normal???

    bobbywang,
I have a '96 450LX, same problem and it is really annoying. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  • tuition06tuition06 Member Posts: 20
Well it sounds like these are great tires. I am ready to order mine in 285/75/16. And they will fit on the 97 LX 450 - right? How do you guys feel about turning the white outlined letters to the inside?
  • hank14hank14 Member Posts: 133
Tuition- I am not sure about the size restrictions on the 97 Lx450- mine's a 99 fj100. I had mine mounted blackwalls out, and prefer the less flashy look.
  • joeeblow1joeeblow1 Member Posts: 238
Yes, they will fit. They will rub a little at full articulation, especially with the soft LX450 springs/shocks. You'll notice them on acceleration, too, but not too much. Advance the timing slightly to compensate.
  • ravickravick Member Posts: 18
The maintenance manual says nothing about replacing the timing belt, so I assumed the 2000 LC came with a timing chain. I raised this question at the Toyota dealer recently and they were not very sure themselves. One of the service advisors kept claiming it was a belt and should be replaced to 90K but could not provide me with a valid source where he was getting this info from.
  • fj100fj100 Member Posts: 97
It has a timing belt, same as the Sequioa and Tundra V8's. I am looking at my '99 Repair Manual and looking at page em30 with a big timing belt. I hope the guys actually doing the work know more than the service managers! The engine did not change from '99 to '00.

    Good luck,

    fj100

During an ice storm last winter my arial bent at the base when someone forgot to lower the ariel. The power motor still works but the arial wont go up and down anymore and has to be taped on the hood in order to listen to AM - its a common problem I guess with any car. I am told that with this age Fj80 (1919) I can get a new mast for $32 and fit it the power motor box assembly. Is this possible - a new assemply unit will cost $200/250 including fitting. Could I get an assembly at a junkyard or similar cheaper? Or is there another solution - my wifes Volvo S60 has no arial!

    Hey folks:

I need some advice here. I am in a situation where my current truck is about to die, and I need to replace it. I was originally interested in the Lexus GX470 because it has some pretty impressive gear such as Torsen center diff., Kinetic Dynamic Suspension and A-Trac. However, starting to feel slightly pressured, I'm beginning to look at the Cruiser. Now, my question to you is...what would you choose and why? Please only constructive comments would be sincerely appreciated.

    Thanks in advance..
  • fj100fj100 Member Posts: 97
I would choose the '04 Cruiser over an '04 GX470 specifically for the size of the vehicles. The GX feels small. I have a family and a dog. Also, the LC is a classic and the GX is new to the car scene. The LC has been in this country since 1952 and has a great heritage. Choose a legend, choose a Land Cruiser.

    Regards,

    fj100

My wife's 2003 is equipped with the Navigation system. Every week or so it will show your location somewhere else besides where you are; normally within a 75 miles radius. I'll recalibrate it manually, then the problem will return in a week or two. Thanks for any help.
  • tuition06tuition06 Member Posts: 20
The 285 / 75 / 16 A/T Revo's fit very well and look great. They are quite quiet so far and fill up the wheel wells nicely. Thanks for the assistance.

I'm looking for a 2003 new or late model low mileage used Cruiser without nav or DVD. I live in a city (Spokane) where there are very few Cruisers at the local dealers, and they all come loaded. I'm willing to go to California, Colorado, Oregon, Utah, Montana or Idaho to get what I want. Any suggestions?

I have a 2003 TLC with 2500 miles. I am beginning to notice what could be the beginnings of the clunking noise in the drivetrain that other members have experienced. I am concerned because the TLC is only 3 months old. I really don't hear a clunking noise, but there is definitely some slack somewhere when I accelerate from a dead stop or when I come to a complete stop. It happens about 1/3 of the time. I have tried starting from 2nd gear and have not experienced the slack. I notice at times when shifting from forward to reverse or vice-versa that there is a clunk in the transmission, not sure if this is related. I have also tried shifting to neutral before coming to a dead stop and I have not experienced the slack when I stop nor when I accelerate. I am going to take it to the dealer next week due to the throttle body having to be replaced per a letter I received from Toyota and I will have them look at this slack problem. Any insights would be appreciated in case thy tell me this is normal

We have a 2000 Land Cruiser and have had the pleasure of owning three different "Lexi"(ES 250, 300 and GS300), so I maybe can help a bit. The LC design is a bit older than the GX design, but I am still amazed at how well the LC is designed -- its very well thought out. We have had ours for 3 1/2 years and the only problem we have had was a fuel sensor "thingie" that was covered under our platinum extended warranty (we are risk-averse).

I'm sure you know that the LX and GX are essentially "souped up" Land Cruisers and 4Runners, respectively. I got in a 2003 LX470 recently an, other then a re-designed center console (mostly for style and to fit the NAV system), and maybe a few relatively insignificant features, it was basically the same thing as my LC.

The real difference, IMHO, is the service. Loaner cars and not sitting in a busy service department waiting room fighting with Grandma and Grandpa to get their Camry serviced have real value, to me. That's an intangible, but it wasn't worth the 8,000 upcharge for the LX 470.

    Hope this helps.

I have a 98 LC and a problem with the driver power window. When you pull the window switch to perform an "auto up" the window rises to the top, then immediately lowers about halfway! Does this every time. Anyone seen this problem before?

    Any advice appreciated!!

Greetings gents, my first post here. Can anyone tell me what the most recent year is for the TLC with solid axles fore and aft, and locking axle differentials? I'm thinking 1991??

Thanks! I'm looking to augment my stable.

I have a 2000 LC, and experienced the same thing but at 42000 miles. It turned out that the driveshaft yoke needed lubricated. The service manager also asked if I had towed anything, because sometimes the brake caliper can stick after towing. Hope this helps.
