Any engine with freeze plugs should accept a block heater. Some people use a battery blanket to help the car start too.

I was at first hesitant about getting "duelers" again. I had two sets before (on other Landcruisers) and was not impressed by the first set, nor impressed by the second set, even though my tire vendor said there was a significant improvement.
thanks for sharing.
I am presently using LC80.
I am holding of on purchasing a new one until I know what's going to happen in 2006. I believe there is going to be some big changes for the LC/LX. These are the flagship trucks in the Lexus/Toyota line up and the still come with the less powerful older 4.7L V8. Even the 4Runner has the new VVTI V8 with 280 HP.
If I find a good used 02/03, I'll get it and trade it in when the new one is out.

Since I think that I will pick up a used TLC when our Volvo XC dies, can I still lurk on this site?
Not only can you still lurk you may also participate in discussions, ask questions, offer insights, perspectives and information, relate relevant experiences and convey (on-topic) jokes and humor as well as heap praise on edmunds.com's forums and hosts! ;-)
And, congratulations, BTW!

You are probably right. I didn't even bother calling them as the price sounded too good to be true. I figured it was like "We are sorry that particular truck has been sold, But we have a similar one for 47K". Besides, if I want the NAV.
Thanks
If you are interested in an Escalade, get a used one. I understand they DROP (depreciate) like a heavy boulder.
I own a 96 Tlc and loving it since i got it back in 2001. It has 103k miles on it when i got it. it's been running great since.
So far i only been doing regular maintenance, oil change, trans fluid, differential fluid, grease on axles (greasing the axle is important, i usually add grease everytime or every other time i change oil. i was told that it the grease dried up and the axle messed up, it's going to cost arm and leg).
Last year i had to replace the rod bearing, because there were slight knocking inside the engine. According to my mech. and toyota dealer, this is rarely happen. so probably just my luck.
Now it's already 150k and still no problem.
Anyway, back to your question.
1. Mpg - 14 average city & hwy (I used to live in CA too)
2. A/C is sufficient for CA summer, third row may need full blast though.
3. Transmission, smooth
4. Front pad seems to wear out faster than the rear.
5. Insurance is about the same as any other car.
I think mine was some $800/yr full coverage, 100/300k coverage.
6. Just get a good test drive, check out the engine real good, make sure is clean, no funny noise, leaks, check the axles for leaks, things like that.
7. at 70-90k i don't think there would be anything wrong. on a 96, it uses timing chain, so it is good for 250k.
hope that help.

I am a huge fan of the TLC and what I really want is an TLC. But sometimes I think it may not be worth the 20K more. I would gladly pay a 10K premium over the Sequoia for the LC. Heck, I would even pay 20 if damn Toyota would put the 280HP VVTI engine it it. I am really pissed at Toyota messing up with the LC just when I am in the market for a new SUV. What's really holding me back is the fact that they are still selling with the older V8. I don't want to shell out 60K only to find the 2006 models are out with a 5.0L VVTI with 300 ponies. That would hurt !!!
And no, it isn't me. and I can't blame it on the dog either.
You got a point. The toruque is prety much the same. Somethingl like 330 vs 335 for the VVTI. I guess unless you drove at really high RPMs you probably don't feel the increase in BHP.
I have since reset the climate control away from "Auto" (where it seemed to favor putting the heat out through the floor vents) to the top (not windshield) or top/bottom vents. On these settings the car seems to keep the temp regulated just fine at my setting.
Some of this may relate to where the thermostat is located and how long it takes for the car to equillibrate. With such large volume of air to heat/cool it comes as no surprise that the system may heat unevenly or overshoot in some areas as it is attempting to satisfy the thermostat quickly.
Regards,
Tom
There is a 200 lb difference in curb weight between the two vehicles (5590 for LX and 5390 for LC) and a 1500 lb difference in towing capacity.
Guess it isn't "that simple".
( N.B.: he isn't an LC owner...just a lurker)
Might it have something to do with the air suspension?
That is a non sequitur since lurkers do not post. In any case, let's stick to discussing vehicles and not each other.

____________Message 4310_____________________
I have a 98 TLC and have been living with the temperature-dependent rattle noise for two years now, but the recent messages on this topic have motivated me to find an answer. In researching this issue on other Toyota boards, it appears that the RAV4 is well known as having precisely the same type of rattle noise that many of us have been experiencing (there was even a TSB issued). Apparently, the noise on the RAV4s is caused by certain structures associated with the wiper cowl contacting the windshield. The links below have a nice description of the problem/fix (with pictures). Hopefully, the fix isn't much different for the TLC. I'm trying it this weekend and will post the results here.

I have had an Fj80 for many years but have never had the problem I am having now in the middle of the Blizzard of 2005.
Here in Connecticut its so cold that the middle seats will not stay down - I am guessing that the metal bars in the floor and on the clamp mechanism at the base of the seats that usually grip around that bar have shrunk below the minimum and cant grip anymore (I am sure that explanation is as clear as mud!). So the middle seat passengers pitch forward when the car stops... I dont have my third row in right now but this might happen back there as well if installed.
New Post and Answer:
Now its warmer weather - presto my seats stay down, so as I thought it was metal shrinkage!. I am surprised no-one else had ever had this problem.
