    Hello,
Has anyone experienced problems with power anthena in LCs? My anthena mast would not retract all the way down. It is not curved or disformed, but there is a build up of some sort on the mast (maybe from all the salt and mud we had in Chicago this winter). Anyway, I was wondering if there is a safe way to clean it? Also, what is the good way to maintain/lubricate anthena? I remember reading somewhere that car polish would do the trick. Please advise.

Thanks to all those sending regards on the 740i/LC trade. Had family visiting this weekend and was happy to have the LC.

rewyllys: I've had Escorts and now for the past 4 years a Valentine One. Nothing compares with the Valentine One for protection. Check them out.
  • mjhammermjhammer Member Posts: 7
I agree with the other posts recommending the Valentine, there is no comparison versus the competition. I'm reading in that you evidently want to operate in "stealth" mode with a behind the grille mount and display on the steering column. Unfortunately, Valentine or anyone else can't give you 360 degree protection if it cannot see behind you. To get the full benefit of the Valentine it just about has to be mounted on the windshield high enough that it can "see" over the rear seats and out the back. I think I know what you are trying to accomplish, but you would sacrifice a big percentage of the products advantage. I have had only one speeding ticket in several years of 30K to 40K per year driving miles with the Valentine. That one was from an airplane being timed over a measured distance, no fault of the Valentine. Car & Driver did an extensive test awhile back on detectors, Valentine was so far superior it makes no sense to me to even consider another brand.

I really wish I could ad my two cents on the radar detectors but I can't. The Commonwealth of Virginia prohibits us from receiving radio signals emitted by radar guns. To me, this is a first amendment issue but everybody thinks I'm nuts when I claim a constitutional right to receive whatever radio signals I want, even if they come from a patrol car on the side of the road. Because of this, I don't have any personal experience to share on these systems.

Was your 2000 TLC purchase a "new" vehicle? Can you advise as to what options you purchased, milage, color and amount paid under/over invoice? The posts thus far by daved528 and ssolomon2 regarding recent purchases should prove useful in negotiating my purchase. However, only one of those was "new" i.e. under 100 miles.
I am planning on buying this week so a prompt response would be most appreciated. Congrats to the recent 2000 TLC owners! I hope to be joining your ranks very soon!!!

Even though the topic whether Toyota will continue the Land Cruiser seems to pop up every once in a while, I am convinced that Toyota will continue to sell the LC since the Sequoia is mainly made for the US. The current LC model has been on the market with "minor" changes for close to ten years. Has anybody heard of possible major changes for the model year 2002?
    Thanks for your response,
    Olaf

In answer to the question about the power antenna, I just replaced the mast/cable assembly in my 98 after it snapped. TLC has about 55K miles and frequent daily use. Replacing is a little tricky. First, unscrew the chome ring at the antenna base using a special tool or a nice rag and pliers. (I used the rag/pliers route carefully and left no marks.) Remove front right wheel/tire and then the inner-fender trim. You have to disconnect a few more things than you'd like to get the antenna cable off but once out, it's easy to take apart the spool to remove the broken cable which you'll find wound up inside. Put everything back together, reinstall in the TLC. Now, have someone nudge the antenna down button while you feed the new cable mast assembly down from the top. Once you've fed it all in, put the chrome ring back on and you're done.

    Hope this helps.

Having used a Valentine One for three years now - in autos as well as mounted on my Ducati touring sport - there is no superior product. The range is very impressive. BTW, mounted behind/under the small windshield of my bike, the unit "sees" around/through me to detect radar approaching from behind! Expensive, but excellent protection.

With regards to my purchase. Yes it was on open MSO vehicle; meaning it had never been titled. The list prise was 58472. Options included Third rear seat/climate control, power quarter windows. Gold trim package; Extra Mile Option package D. Color: White w/Oak.

Mileage: 10,000. However, my vehicle was bought through the Toyota Auction in Texas. Most of the vehicles are lease cars with a few like mine that were driven by a Toyota employee (not a dealership) in the Gulf States region. So the price I paid (44,000+) would not be fair to compare to a dealer's price. I believe that this vehicle has an invoice in the area of $51-$52,000. Hope this helps.

From one of the other boards:

#18 of 18 The Land Cruiser is definitely being discontinued!! by krisko Feb 04, 2001 (11:23 am)

This is as close to fact as it can be, info from Southeast Toyota in Jax. The fact is that the LC is eating into Lexus sales, the Sequoia is eating into the LC's market share. Bottom line, Lexus will sell the $65,000 SUVs, Toyota will sell the $40,000 ones. The Land Cruiser will still be available for other parts of the world. 2001 is the last model year for the Toyota Land Cruiser here in the states.
  • drumbolddrumbold Member Posts: 22
Last week I went into a local dealer to "look". He really wanted to unload a new 2000 Land Cruiser. He was into the $47,000 range by the time I left. Options included: Third rear seat/climate control, roof rack, towing hitch, running boards, hood protector, auto dimming/temperature displaying mirror, and wood trim. Color: Champagne Pearl with oak interior.
    Hope this helps.
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
Funny, I have been told by every person I know at Toyota that the LC will not be discontinued. Where did you get this rumor?
  • drumbolddrumbold Member Posts: 22
From the Toyota Sequoia vs Toyota Land Cruiser forum. I copied it as it was printed.

    Thanks for the info drumbold.

ssolomon -- I thought I remembered you posting that your vehice was pre-driven but untitled. Thanks for the confirmation. Congrats on your purchase.

2cruisers -- I would still be interested in hearing what options, color and price you negotiated in your deal. I am stalled in negotiations and would appreciate any info ASAP.

    Best regards!

Hello fellow "cruisers"!! I hope that someone out there can advise me on the cost of getting my 1997 TLC serviced. I'm approaching 90K and I'm not having any problems, I recieved a card in the mail from where I brought my vehicle and they're saying that I need to have it serviced. I just called and was told that the price of servicing my LC would be around $450.00. First of all, is this fair and would it be worth this. I will do it if I feel that it's needed, but I really would hate to pay for something that I don't need. Any advise would be appreciated.

Does anybody here knows why they change the metal rear wind deflectors on the 2001 LX470/LC to Plastic/fiberglass?

    Your comments are greatly appreciated.

    Regards,

    MG

DWRICHA Answer: About your service question on the 97LC.
Go to your owners manual and check what is the service schedule for 90K or talk to the service department.

    Important Items:

    Transmission oil change
    Differential oil change
    Fuel injectors clean
    Adjust diferential shaft
    Spark plugs
    Tire rotation
check your wires houses belts etc.
These are just the basic items. You will be surprise how much you can save in this doing it your self items. I will recommend you doing the transmission and differential oil change by a service tech or dealer.

I keep my cars in excellent shape following this basic rule trouble free and I save a ton of money. Remember a TLC is no different than any other car out there. Some times people take you for a ride just because you have a Land Cruiser just like owning a boat and going to the dealer they get you for everything they can.
Your Land Cruiser will have no problem going in to the 200,000 miles range if you fallow this.

    Hope this helps.

The Landcruiser is NOT being discontinued. Good heavens, were I to type "Cliffy wears green shorts on Sundays" would that make it so just because it was here!?

Landcruiser isn't being discontinued, and they are even bringing out a 2nd Landcruiser "retro" model in the next 18 months.

    Dianne
PS: you can cut and print that because it's true. But, I do not know Cliffy's undershorts color on Sundays.

Just curious.....does anyone have some new info on the JBL stereo problem, maybe a fix soon- my lease is up on my 4Runner LTD in the next couple months and want a 2001 Land Cruiser, but not if it has this annoying problem.
  • joeeblow1joeeblow1 Member Posts: 238
dwricha, There's not a lot to be done at 90K miles, but you can do some maintenance to keep your mind at ease. The front axle seals probably need to be replaced. This is very costly to have the dealer do it as it's a lot of labor, but it's not technically difficult. You can have the valve clearances checked, but more than likely they will still be well within tolerances. I checked mine at 115K miles, and they were fine.

I would do a basic tune up (new plugs, test plug wires & replace if needed; all filters), replace drivetrain fluids (tranny, t-case, diffs), flush the brake fluid (should do this at least once every 2 years), replace coolant, and repack wheel bearings if you're not replacing the axle seals. Make sure the rear wheel bearings are re-packed, too. Many dealers do not realize the rear axles are full-floating, and they have wheel bearing packed in grease just like the fronts. Do the belts, too, if they haven't been done in 30K miles. Check over the cooling system hoses and brake rotors/pads/hoses.

Having the dealer do all this will cost you a lot more than $450 :). Consider doing it yourself.

The service manager at the dealership we got our 2001 LC sent me an e-mail saying that Toyota acknowledged the problem and that "they anticipate a new amp or stereo being availible in the future, I have been told it may be as long as 90 days."

Cliffy, Diane, can you verify this?

I don't know how this may affect new LC production, but hopefully a fix for existing LC's will soon be available.

P.S. Cliffy, do you really wear green shorts on Sundays??! :-)

I have previously posted confirming the blistering bass problem with 2001 TLCs.

Today I received a phone call from the service manager at the dealership where I purchased my TLC. (John Elway Toyota in Englewood, Colorado). I was advised that Toyota has sent their re-engineered amp fix for myself and one other customer. I am having the new amp installed Monday afternoon. We'll see if this really fixes the problem......maybe there is a God after all........

The "Retro" Landcruiser I referred to:

Remember the old FJ40 Landcruiser ( from the 60's?)

Rumor has it that the Landcruiser will go more back to the basics - a real off-road machine. Rumor has it that Rod Millen helped build this new "retro" car.

FYI, off for now. I set up a new "news/future" section at my website (www.carsontoyota.com) where I will start to add new things that are expected, including the photos of the new Hybrid SUV 'comin soon!

Actually the TLC was imported from '58 to late '83. So the new TLC will have a live front axle with turbo diesel, 5 speed tranny, and available vinyl bench seat like they get in Venezuela? That would be awesome.
  • jgts1jgts1 Member Posts: 32
I called my dealer today and inquired with service about the issue....basically, the guy had absolutely no knowledge of this problem- I told him that this was widely discussed on the internet...I said "at least 8-10 people have this problem that I know of, you think its just a coincidence."- he said "well, these people could have installed alarms, remote starts, different radios- which could have caused the bass problem, you shouldn't believe everything you read on the internet."

I said "of course, I'm sure all of these people did alterations to their vehicles and they are all crazy- your going to have to come up with a better explanation than that."

If you don't know, just say it.

To all of you that responded to my concerns servicing my 1997 TLC, I'd like to say thank you. In this day and age, there are people that care enough to offer their knowledge to help. This is a great forum, I'm proud to own what I consider one of the best SUV's made today and to be a part of this community. Thank You!!

By the way, I now have a friend that's a qualified TLC specialist, I read to him the list of concerns that I gained from you and he's going to look at my vehicle. He even offered other things that he's going to look at to keep my TLC in top shape and save me the cost of dealership overcharge.
  • bloodybeefbloodybeef Member Posts: 18
I just got a call from the dealer I brought my LC to have looked at too... He left a message on my machine last night, but I'm not sure I want to have them do that yet. He said the amp is a unit that they are "TESTING"...that scares me a bit...why does my LC have to be their test machine...you think they would have installed it in a good few of their own test models that they wouldn't need to rip into my truck for a "test". I'm just a little skeptical because I know someone else on this board went thru this whole thing with Toyota where they promised this hardware would fix the issue and it didn't...course that was a couple of months ago...since it's been 4 months since people started complaining...they might have actually found a fix. If someone else got this new and improved unit installed, please post on how it has been working out for you.
  • joeeblow1joeeblow1 Member Posts: 238
bloodybeef (nice name btw), You're the test, not your vehicle. Only you can decide if it sounds OK.

Has anyone installed a set of 285/75's tires on a newer (98+) LC?? If so, I would be curious as to the fit and look. Seems to me that the front end would need to be raised a little to make the bigger tires fit. Not sure if that is the case, but would like to know if anybody has info. Oh secondly, I have nothing but good things to say about my Borla exhaust system. It fit like a glove and sounds really nice, like a V-8 should sound. Not sure if it improved my gas mileage beacuse I installed it just after I had my LC serviced. I got better mileage on my first tank full after the fuel injectors had been cleaned. I did notice though on a recent trip that my mileage went back to normal when I was averaging 80mph. Anyway, that is my two and a half cents.

Has anyone added additional fuel tanks to 2000 TLC? I drive long distances and would like much more range than 25 gallons provides. Is there room for another tank under the body? Who could do this work for me? Thanks for your advice.
  • daveh7daveh7 Member Posts: 2
I response to #481, I have the replacement amp installed in my 2001 LC. The replacement of the amp does not require ripping into the vehicle. The technician slides the passenger seat all the way forward, removes the plastic cover (two screws) and the amp (4 screws/two elect plugs). I was out of the service department in less than an hour. The stereo sounds like it should, the excess bass is definitely gone. It is now possible to turn the volume to very high levels while driving down the highway, leaving the bass/mid/treble settings at 0, and enjoy the music. No more rattling/vibration due to the excess sub output. Prior to amp replacement, I had to either set the volume to the lowest level that allowed hearing sound and live with the excess bass, or not listen to the stereo at all.

Daveh7 (post #486), that's great news! Can you get from your service dealership the technical service bulletin (TSB) ID so I (and others) can request the fix from our dealerships? Thanks.

Blisteringbass, Bloodybeef, looking forward to "hearing" about your fix.

We are beginning to look into replacing our 3 year old Lincoln Navigator. As there are few choices out there with a 3rd row seat or option for one, the LC is high on our list.

Any input as to the pros and cons of the LC and pricing help for recent So. California LC purchases? Any thing in particular you folks are disappointed in, or especially happy with? How is the Nov system on the 2001 models?

Thanks in advance for any help, safe driving to all...

I had Toyota's re-engineered amp installed in my TLC today. The amp was installed very easily in a short period of time. My vehicle emerged unscathed. I recommend this fix to all 2001 TLC owners. Now we all can enjoy our favorite tunes in our vehicles as we should have been able to do from the beginning........ There is a God.

Bloodybeef & Icbound, go for it!

The stereo fix, while exciting news, is a cause for frustration for those of us whose dealers do not as of yet have access to the service bulletin or the new amp necessary to complete the repair in question. It would be much appreciated if daveh7 and blistering bass could provide us all with that info so we can collectively share in their excitement and relief.

I have consulted with both Toyota of Venture and Toyota of Ox nard in Southern California and neither has access to or knowledge of the replacement bulletin or parts. Both dealers are rather miffed that they have not been made privy to this information.

I am glad, however, that a "fix" is almost here for all of us. I knew Toyota would rise to the occasion to keep their customers happy.
  • bloodybeefbloodybeef Member Posts: 18
Zuma13 have you called the Toyota hotline? I think they might have sent me the amplifier because I've actually escalated the issue a bit and had the district service manager look at it. At the time I took it to a Toyota dealer in Seattle...and they called me last week to bring my LC in but I really didn't like their service so I'm having them send it over to Toyota of Kirkland and they'll put it in for me this Saturday. I'll be sure to ask for a part# or whatever info they can provide when I speak to the service rep this Saturday...and post it afterward...with thoughts on how the new and improved amp is working...
  • blisteringbassblisteringbass Member Posts: 4
I will call John Elway Toyota tomorrow and try to get the part number of the amp for the stereo "fix". I looked on the paperwork I received when mine was done. It says "replaced stereo amp". On the next line the numbers and letters 8468 WT45 appear. It is unclear as to their significance.

Like Bloodybeef stated she did in the previous post, l too escalated the issue by getting the district service manager involved and made a lot of noise over the bad stereo problem in 2001 TLCs.
  • jgts1jgts1 Member Posts: 32
I as well would really like to know the bulletin ID....I am printing out all of these posts, so when the dealer looks at me like I'm crazy..I'll have something to show them.

So, anything anyone has- it would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
  • zuma13zuma13 Member Posts: 35
Hurray! I was called by my Toyota dealer advising me that the replacement amplifier would be avaiable for my Cruiser next week. What a relief. From the stellar responses I've been reading from those who've already experienced the "fix", I'm sure I'll be pleased with the results. It can't be much worse than it is now.

Again, I knew Toyota would "step up to the plate" and do the "right thing". They've always been that kind of company.

Hello everyone! My name is Steve and I have read all of the TL posts and enjoyed the discussion. Like everyone else I have the "bass" problem on my 2001 TL and am glad to see a fix is here. I have only owned my TL since December and it has rained only a few times since then in callas. I have noticed a funny noise I can only describe as gurgling on the left hand side of my windshield/dashboard area when traveling at highway speeds of 55-75mph. the noise is not consistent. It sounds like water trapped and being whipped around by the wind. If the TL were not so quiet I probably would not be able to hear it. I can't find any leaks inside. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem. The only other problem I had was part of the rubber molding that covers the trim around the window on the front right peeled off. I was waiting for the "bass" fix before taking it in for repairs.

The TL is the best overall SUB I ever owned and I have had plenty. Suburbans, Tahoe, and most recently a 2000 Expedition which was very nice, but is a tinker toy in comparison to the TL. I really wanted a TL when I bought the Expedition but could not get the high rent Toyota Dealers in Dallas to offer a decent price. I finally got a dealer outside Dallas to sell me a 2001 TLC for $600 under dealer invoice! I look forward to future posts and wish everyone a great day!

    Best Regards,
    Steve

Zuma, can you (or anyone else) find out if the stereo fix is through Toyota's service organization or if it's being subcontracted through JBL. My Toyota service manager hasn't seen any Technical Service Bulletins on this (at least not yet). He said he'll try contacting JBL tech support.

Knowing the fix is out there, I want it ... NOW

(Ahh patience is a virtue :-)

Check the windshield moulding or see if the radiator is low on coolant. That's a common problem with the old toyota hilux. Either low coolant level, or a clogged heater core.

Icbound, the "fix" is definitely out there. I'm getting mine next week. I've been advised that your dealer's parts dept need only order the NEW replacement amplifier for the 2001 TLC. Apparently, there is no new Toyota stock number at this time. It is simply designated as the NEW amp.

I have, however, been advised there is only a limited supply of replacement amps at this time. So move hastily. Your dealer should talk to the Toyota Regional Service Mgr who can assit him with the acquisition of the requisite parts.

    Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Hey everyone. I just made a deal on a 2001 and will get it in two days. My dealer was also unaware of any problem with the stereo, and we also tested the one that was on the lot, and their was not a problem. His sales manager asked me where the people are that are having the problem, because it might be a regional problem. The 300 watt stereos are installed at each of the regional centers.

I am in Texas, and the car was completed at Gulf States Toyota, in Houston. Where is everyone else?
  • daveh7daveh7 Member Posts: 2
I assume you tested the stereo with the vehicle running, the excess bass is not present otherwise. I also am suprised about the comment on the amp installation, according to the Toyota literature the stereo system is a factory installed system, it is not one of the items that are installed in the US (according to Toyota and Edmunds web sites). I find it hard to believe that door panels, and all the rear trim that would have to be off to install the subwoofer-which are all parts of the "JBL" portion of the system, are either not installed at the factory or are removed by the regional centers.

    I am in Southern CA.

Question for rjcruzz....How much louder is the Borla exhause than the stock exhaust? I previously installed a TRD exhaust on a 4Runner, and ended up taking it back due to the excess noise and vibrations it caused when accelerating.
